Women’s Wrestling News (2021) – # 5

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Many, and if not most wrestling fans can not attend matches this season due to postponements, cancellation and restrictions on crowd size due tot the need for social distancing. Yet we can keep up with the wrestling news and with advances in videos, the internet and even televised matches we can still see a variety of events. It is not the same and a fan does not feel as connected to the event. The wrestlers can not hear shouts of encouragement or instruction and that can be both unfortunate and fortunate in some sense. Yet we can still encourage them by being informed. Keep on Wrestling!

1 } – High School Insider: Chloe Ogden taking an unconventional route to achieve goals
It’s not unusual for elite wrestlers to express their ultimate goal of becoming an Olympic champion. Chloe Ogden of Maitland, Florida, and a senior at Lake Highland Prep in Orlando, is no different. But the route she plans to take on her journey towards achieving this goal, while maybe not unusual, is certainly unconventional. Ogden, a two-time Florida High School Athletic Association state champion at 138 pounds who is also ranked No. 1 in the nation at her weight class by USA Wrestling, recently verbally committed to the University of North Carolina.
Here’s the kicker: UNC does not have a women’s wrestling program. But being a part of the Tar Heels program means learning from a coaching staff that includes coach Coleman Scott, a 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist and former U.S. Women’s Freestyle National Team Coach, associate head coach Tony Ramos, a two-time USA Wrestling World Team member, and assistant coach Jamill Kelly, a 2004 Olympic silver medalist. … rest of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1611202574779&twSessionId=lygxiyrsuc&postId=983523135&mc_cid=36a2e0aa41&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
AND ‘Frustrating’: Cancelation slows progress of girls wrestling in Connecticut
Vienna Prado began wrestling in seventh grade, mostly taking on boys as she progressed from middle school and up through three years of high school wrestling. Prior to her junior year at Stamford, it was announced the CIAC would hold its first All-Girls Wrestling State Open Invitational with 75 female wrestlers participating. Prado was thrilled she would be able to measure herself against the other female wrestlers in the state. However, before she reached the girls tournament, Prado tore both her ACL and MCL during practice, ending her dream of wrestling for a title. “It was so close to the state tournament,” Prado said. “I was so ready for a girls state tournament. I had been practicing for this my whole life and I couldn’t wait to wrestle for a championship. I was so angry, knowing there was finally a girls tournament and I was going to miss it. But it is what it is. There will be no comeback story for Prado as the CIAC is not allowing any wrestling this winter due to COVID-19 restrictions. … rest of story at https://www.gametimect.com/frustrating-cancelation-slows-progress-of-girls-wrestling-in-connecticut/?mc_cid=4ec9be6c16&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – Butte wrestling to host Billings Senior for 1st-ever girls dual at the school
BUTTE — The Bulldogs’ girls will have two opportunities in the coming days to put their talents on display. First, Billings Senior will travel to Butte on Friday for the first-ever girls dual sanctioned by the MHSA in Butte. That event will start at noon at the Civic Center.  “In all the events that we’ve competed in so far, if the other team has female wrestlers, we’ll match them up,” explained Butte wrestling coach Cory Johnson. “It seems like not everybody always gets a match and it’s not really a showcase for the girls. So this will be the first time that we actually have an event that is specialized for the girls, and that’s really exciting.” While this is the first event specifically for female wrestlers, Johnson notes that there have been girls on teams during previous seasons. They just had to wrestle boys.  All nine girls on the Butte wrestling team will have at least one match during Friday’s dual. “I think (Billings Senior) has 15 or 16,” Johnson said. “The way that the MHSA has it right now, is there are seven weight classes. We have all the weight classes filled. Some will even wrestle twice.”
Less than 24 hours after squaring up with Billings Senior, the Bulldogs will hop on a bus to Kalispell Flathead for a girls wrestling mixer. … rest of story at https://406mtsports.com/high-school/wrestling/butte-wrestling-to-host-billings-senior-for-1st-ever-girls-dual/article_2a45e31f-b5ca-5216-a371-b73ac9b1b760.html?mc_cid=5a9932a916&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
