8 } – Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Wrestling preview who will be grappling for gold
Wrestling continues to be an Olympic mainstay at Tokyo 2020, with 18 Gold medals up for grabs. For all your Olympic coverage, stay tuned to The Inner Sanctum’s Olympic hub and the Olympics Central.
Tokyo 2020 will see wrestling once again be a key Olympic sport. The Tokyo games will see two disciplines of the event, the traditional Greco-Roman wrestling, and the freestyle. Whilst men can compete in both, women may only compete in the freestyle competition. One of the oldest sports of all time, wrestling has been a staple of the Olympics since ancient times. The term Greco-Roman comes from the ideas that the sport is similar to that of ancient times. In some ways, this is true, with the addition of women to Olympic wrestling in 2004 has been the most significant change. While there are two styles of wrestling, both have the same goal. Without grabbing at clothing, the goal is to get your opponent’s shoulders onto the mat. The difference being in Greco-Roman, competitors may only use upper bodies, where freestyle is exactly that, free for competitors to use any part of their bodies.

The sport is fought on a circular mat that is 9 meters wide. … rest of story at https://www.theinnersanctum.com.au/tokyo-2020-olympics-wrestling-preview-who-will-be-grappling-for-gold/?mc_cid=4a8e8b94a2&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

The USA team competing in Tokyo will consist of 15 athletes (six in women’s freestyle, five in men’s freestyle and four in Greco-Roman). Draw: Thursday, August 5
Dates of competition: Friday, August 6 and Saturday, August 7
U.S. representative: Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/USOPTC)
This weight class has its share of past World and Olympic medalists, and is headlined by a pair of two-time World champions, Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan and Yui Susaki of Japan. Stadnik is the most recent World champion, claiming the 2019 World title to go along with her 2009 World title. She also earned the No. 1 seed. She also boasts five-total World medals. In 2021, she was competing well with wins at the European Championships and the Poland Open. It would be a great story if her fourth Olympic medal was gold. 2017 and 2018 World champion Yui Susaki of Japan was not Japan’s entry at the 2019 Worlds, when Yuki Irie beat her out for the spot.
