| Dear Wrestling World, You can help bring back Fresno State State wrestling. The pandemic forced Fresno State to make the tough decision to discontinue three varsity athletic programs, but today there is an opportunity to reset and plan for a better future. A group of Fresno State alumni and supporters have just launched a petition urging Fresno State’s new president, Dr. Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, to work with students, alumni, and supporters to reinstate all three varsity teams: Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Wrestling and Men’s Tennis. |
| There is a long list of good reasons to bring back the teams. Fresno State is an important part of California’s Central Valley and its athletics programs provide vital opportunities for high school students to obtain a college education. In fact, across all three NCAA divisions, wrestling has the 2nd largest percentage of First Generation College Bound Students. In California, there are over 22,000 high school boys that wrestle, with only 6 intercollegiate teams in the state. The Fresno State programs also represent a commitment the school has made to the region; 57% of athletes on the teams scheduled for elimination are from the San Joaquin Valley. Reinstating the teams reaffirms the strong connection between the community and the area’s top university. I hope you join with me, sign the petition, and urge President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval to work with students, alumni, and supporters to reinstate Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Wrestling and Men’s Tennis.Sincerely, Mike Moyer,Executive Director National Wrestling Coaches Association |
