1 } – ‘You’ve got to find tournaments yourself’: Durham wrestler salvages senior season
DURHAM — After venturing on 33 different flights that spanned across six states, Jacob Christensen wasn’t going to let a missed senior season impede his progress. Christensen, the standout wrestler for Durham High, finished as runner-up in the 220-pound weight class at the CIF State Wrestling Championships in February 2020. Christensen was a junior and the championship meet held in Bakersfield was one of the final largescale sporting events held before the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a massive shutdown of sports. Every year, capturing a state championship was his main goal. Christensen placed sixth at the CIF State Wrestling Championships as a sophomore. “My goal was to always win a state title. I fell short last year, but circumstances happen,” Christensen said. “There’s no one to really blame.” … rest of story at https://www.chicoer.com/2021/04/30/youve-got-to-find-tournaments-yourself-durham-wrestler-salvages-senior-season/?mc_cid=6d9f324080&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – Figueroa still trending towards wrestling stardom, despite missing chance at high school history
SELMA, Calif. (KGPE) – Because of COVID, Selma High senior wrestler Richard Figueroa missed out on a chance at a record-tying fourth state title.
“It hurts a lot, but not too much,” said Figueroa, at a college signing celebration for Richard at Selma High School Thursday — “because my coaches told me, ‘there’s a lot more down the road to accomplish.’”
“He acted like it was his fault, like ‘I’m sorry coach,’” said Selma High wrestling coach Sam Lopez, about the pandemic canceling the state wrestling tournament this year. “Sometimes you have no control over what the things are. I mean, God usually has a plan.” The Selma senior also missed out on the chance to join older sister Gracie, as the only brother-sister combo to both win four California state titles. … rest of story at https://www.yourcentralvalley.com/news/figueroa-still-trending-towards-wrestling-stardom-despite-missing-chance-at-high-school-history/?mc_cid=a53f0e5e67&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

4 } – Creswell’s Kent first woman in Oregon to lead a wrestling program
During the the 2019-20 academic year, there were 148 high schools in Oregon that had a combined boys and girls wrestling program. And every one of those teams was coached by a man. Not any more. Christina Kent, a Navy veteran, former amateur wrestler, longtime assistant coach and mother of six, became the first woman in state history to lead a high school wrestling team when she was hired at Creswell before the start of the season to coach both the boys and girls. “I would say people have been excited about having a female coach,” said Kent, 40, whose team of nine boys and six girls is two weeks into its season. “It changes the dynamic in the mat room in a positive way, especially for the girls that are in there. Most of the time, girls are comfortable with male coaches.  … rest of story at https://www.registerguard.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2021/05/29/creswells-king-first-woman-oregon-lead-wrestling-program/5154020001/?mc_cid=cd4ee7a97a&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

5 } – ‘It’s going to be a movement’: Chico High autistic wrestlers thrive on the mat
CHICO — After school, the air is thick inside the Chico High wrestling room. Wrestlers pair off honing their takedowns and mat skills. Music blares through the speakers. Shane Blocker and Isham Parea-Hood take turns shooting at each other’s legs. The two are entangled practicing with intensity. Both are slightly out of breath and sweaty but are still putting in maximum effort at practice. Blocker and Parea-Hood are both grapplers for the Chico High wrestling team, but wrestling is much more to them. It’s not just a sport, it’s become an essential part of their lives for their social and emotional growth. Blocker and Parea-Hood have both been diagnosed with autism. “The most important thing is it’s not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle for me,” Parea-Hood said. “Wrestling is hard. It’s not easy but I love it.” There are now three wrestlers — Blocker, Parea-Hood and Darian Cox — as well as one assistant coach — Joe Wesley — who are on the autism spectrum and are part of the wrestling team. … rest of story at https://www.orovillemr.com/2021/05/30/its-going-to-be-a-movement-chico-high-autistic-wrestlers-thrive-on-the-mat/?mc_cid=22b0f00134&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

6 } – San Clemente wrestling makes it back to CIF-SS finals with a nonstop attitude
San Clemente’s wrestlers found ways to work out on their own and improve during the COVID-19 shutdown
COVID-19 gave high school athletes an excuse to relax a little. There wasn’t going to be any competitions for a while, maybe even a long while. So why not slow down, take a little break? San Clemente High’s boys wrestling team was not interested. “COVID actually helped us,” said San Clemente junior Garrett Boyd who wrestles in the 152-pound class. “While other teams were slacking off, we were still working hard.” But wrestlers were not allowed to get together to wrestle each other, workout together, practice moves and holds together. How could San Clemente out-work other wrestling teams? “By texting our guys,” Boyd said. “’Hey, go on a run. Go lift … ‘” San Clemente lifted itself into the CIF Southern Section Division 3 team dual meet finals. The Tritons are home Saturday, June 5 at 1 p.m. against Royal. … rest of story at https://www.ocregister.com/2021/06/02/san-clemente-wrestling-makes-it-back-to-cif-ss-finals-with-a-nonstop-attitude/?mc_cid=2fffafa367&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

7 } – After injury-riddled Pocatello wrestling career, Gabe Blessinger gets opportunity at North Idaho
Showing Gabe Blessinger a bracket only incites worry. It’s like playing a montage of plane crashes just after a first-time flyer pulls that polyester seatbelt across their lap. Wrestlers are supposed to be like sprinters, supposed to be these cocky specimens who could be paired against Superman and think they’re kryptonite. But Blessinger, a Poky wrestler, obsessively mapped out tournament brackets with a sort of inductive reasoning that rarely ended with him on top.
That made things challenging for Poky coach JB Plato. If the Pocatello wrestling coach could have blindfolded Blessinger until he stepped on the mat, Plato probably would have superglued a bandana over his senior’s eyes. Since that’s not an option, he refrained from sharing tournament brackets with Blessinger – which worked for maybe a few hours or a day. Then Blessinger would track it down and fire off a text to his coach — something about how his seed was too low or how the guy he may face in the semis is a former state champ or how the guy he could face in the finals beat him before. … rest of story at https://www.idahostatejournal.com/preps/after-injury-riddled-pocatello-wrestling-career-gabe-blessinger-gets-opportunity-at-north-idaho/article_8fd03b9b-622c-585d-ae89-7e97cf850acc.html?mc_cid=0fb3325f19&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – Jeff Silveira named MVC’s assistant athletic director, wrestling coach
Jeff Silveira, named Monte Vista Christian School’s assistant athletic director and wrestling coach Monday, said he doesn’t often open emails with job notifications from LinkedIn. But he did, and five weeks later, he was hired by the private school in Watsonville. “God wants me there,” Silveira said Wednesday. “I’m excited about their athletics program. They want to grow. They remind me of where Valley Christian was 20 to 25 years ago. The have amazing facilities. That campus has a collegiate feel to it.” Silveira, 45, has coached wrestling for much of the past 25 years, starting at the high school level and climbing to the NCAA Division I ranks. “I want them to love wrestling like I do,” said Silveira, noting the sport was a driving force for him to attend and compete for West Valley College under legendary coach Jim Root in the 1990s. “I want them to take the discipline and dedication they learn and apply it to other parts of their life. And I want them to work hard and have fun.” … rest of story at https://www.santacruzsentinel.com/2021/06/03/jeff-silveira-named-mvcs-assistant-athletic-director-wrestling-coach/?mc_cid=0fb3325f19&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

9} – Greater Spokane League goes outdoors to determine wrestling champions
The Greater Spokane League usually fills the winner’s podium at the state wrestling tournaments. This year would have been no exception – except that the pandemic eliminated Mat Classic 2021. But that didn’t stop GSL organizers from pulling off a pair of championship tournaments at Union Stadium on Wednesday. Despite some early morning showers, things went off without a hitch for the outdoor event. “Mother Nature helped out and we were able to get started on time,” Mead coach Phil McLean said. The league ran separate 16-wrestler tournaments for 4A/3A and 2A in 14 weight brackets seeded by last year’s state and regional placings. Some brackets didn’t quite fill. Mead ran away with the 4A/3A team title with 308.5 points, outdistancing University (240) and Mt. Spokane (184). … rest of story at https://www.khq.com/sports/high_school_sports/greater-spokane-league-goes-outdoors-to-determine-wrestling-champions/article_c88b4cf1-701b-5565-9582-fa54c30667d1.html?mc_cid=273e35accc&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

10 } – American Falls’ wrestler Kolter Burton wins Greco-Roman Junior National Championship
Kolter Burton can probably give tours of downtown Fargo by this point, can probably point out every crack along the roads of North Dakota’s most-populated city. The 15-year old wrestler from American Falls would jog around Fargo last week on a nightly basis, trying to burn off whatever weight he gained throughout the day. Competing at the USA Wrestling National Championships, the 100-pound competitor could have simply competed in the 16U freestyle championships then moved to the Greco-Roman championships right after. Or, if he wanted to bolster his competition against older kids, he could have done the same thing in the Juniors, which is for 17- and 18-year olds. Nope. Burton wrestled in all four tournaments, an attempt almost unheard of. … rest of story at https://www.idahostatejournal.com/preps/american-falls-wrestler-kolter-burton-wins-greco-roman-junior-national-championship/article_5ede9466-2d3f-503e-91ff-683a1e72d33d.html?mc_cid=108a6e3c7b&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

11 } – Family ties run deep for La Grande wrestling team
LA GRANDE — Not many dads get the front-row seat that Klel Carson had when his son, Braden, won the 126-pound weight division at the 2020 Class 4A state championship. Carson, La Grande High School’s wrestling coach, now has two sons competing on the team at a high level. For the Carson family, wrestling provides a special bond between father and sons. “They kind of grew up in the program,” Klel Carson said. “It’s been a part of the whole family and it’s just really rewarding being able to coach them and have the best seat in the house for their accomplishments.” … rest of story at https://www.lagrandeobserver.com/sports/family-ties-run-deep-for-la-grande-wrestling-team/article_ebebfabe-cfbb-11eb-b839-97db962de543.html?mc_cid=a01a119869&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

12 } – Sibling rivalry? Singleton brothers pushing for greatness on the mat
Four middle school state championships. Three high school state championships. Four national All-America honors. Since they stepped on a mat, 35 combined state championships in collegiate, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. And this week, one NCAA Division I commitment. Nash and Gage Singleton are continuing to write their chapter in Oregon’s high school wrestling lore. In the early 2000s, Class 3A Burns had the Swartzlender brothers. The Stigall brothers won multiple Class 4A state titles at North Marion in the early 2010s. Most recently, Class 5A Crescent Valley’s Lamer trio of brothers have been piling up the hardware. Today, Class 6A Roseburg’s Singleton brothers are making their mark. Nash Singleton, who is entering his senior year at Roseburg, recently earned All-America honors in Greco-Roman wrestling at the United States Marine Corps/USA Wrestling Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. … rest of story at https://www.nrtoday.com/sports/sibling-rivalry-singleton-brothers-pushing-for-greatness-on-the-mat/article_1a023aa2-de23-55b9-bcad-f18f40beb85b.html?mc_cid=e223f59fcd&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
