Klessinger: 12 simple tips to help in wrestling, coaching and life

I have been a wrestling coach for 25 years. Over that time, my beliefs and philosophies have changed drastically. As a younger coach, I focused most of my time on winning. More accurately, we didn’t win much back then, so my focus was on losing less. A few years later, I put my attention on myself. What do I need to do to have a winning program? 

I took a hard look at myself and determined I needed to make some changes. For the next 10 years, I was determined to be the model for my team. I decided right then to show them how to work hard each day. I participated in nearly every drill, conditioning activity and live wrestled daily. I demonstrated what it meant to be committed by being at every practice. If I wanted them to be there, I had to. No exceptions. 

In 22 years as the head coach at South River in Edgewater, Md., I have missed two practices. The first was in 2001 because I got married. The second and last missed practice was in 2004. My six-month-old daughter at the time needed surgery. 

I share that with my wrestlers each season like a badge of honor. I want them to be committed. Attendance is the first step in commitment. I have loosened up my policies over the years on attendance. It is still a big deal. However, I recognize there is life outside of wrestling. Well, my wife would disagree with my statement. UNC-Pembroke Wrestling Dominant In Dual, SACC Opener At Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team tacked up 24 takedowns, a quintet of 4-point near falls, and got bonus-point victories in five different weight classes on the way to a convincing 39-6 victory over Coker in the dual and South Atlantic Conference Carolinas opener for both teams on Tuesday evening inside the DeLoach Center.
 
It was the second win in the last three season-opening dual meets for the Braves (1-0, 1-0 SACC) who improved to 8-0 all-time in the series with their Carolinas rivals. It was also the second-straight season, as well as the third time in the 8-meet-old series between the two squads, that Coker (0-1, 0-1) has succumbed by 30 or more points.
 
Logan Seliga kicked off the evening with a no-sweat 15-0 technical fall win over Corey Gallivan at 125 pounds, and freshman Logan Robinson followed with an equally-as-impressive 16-1 technical fall over Brandon Dasen to give the visitors a quick 10-0 lead. NC State wrestling goes 2-0

Wolfpack knocks off Lock Haven and Nebraska

The NC State wrestling team went 2-0 on Saturday, defeating Lock Haven 32-4 and No. 17 Nebraska 23-10.  
With the two wins, the Wolfpack improves to 3-0 on the season. 
NC State returns to action on Sunday for Wrangle Mania Round Robin, also to be held in Bethlehem, Pa. 
All went well in Bethlehem on day one as NC State took five of the first seven matches on the day. 
In those first five matches three wrestlers – Kai OrineJackson Arrington and Don Cates – got their first wins of the season.

Campbell Camels fall to Michigan, UNC in Battle at Bragg

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Nationally ranked Michigan and North Carolina defeated Campbell Friday night in the Battle at Bragg, hosted by the Camels in conjunction with the United States Army, at the Pope Army Airfield at Fort Bragg.

The Veterans Day event, brought to you by Cliff Keen, was streamed live, globally, via UFC Fight Pass, in association with Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

NORTH CAROLINA VICTORIOUS OVER CAMPBELL 24-10 IN BATTLE AT BRAGG

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The No. 15 North Carolina wrestling team won seven matches in Friday’s dual versus Campbell University on the way to defeating the Fighting Camels, 24-10, at Pope Airfield on Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. in the inaugural Battle at Bragg. 
The event, organized by the United States Army, U.S. Army Recruiting and Campbell University, brought the Tar Heels to Fort Bragg for the dual with Campbell on Veteran’s Day. 
Carolina came out on top over the Fighting Camels with victories across weight classes in their first dual meet of the 2022-2023 season.

Wolverines Open Dual Slate with Decisive Win over Campbell in Battle at Bragg

No. 5 Michigan won eight of 10 bouts en route to a 26-6 win over Campbell in its dual opener at the Battle at Bragg event.

Mount Union Trojans cruise past Lincoln Memorial, 40-6

HARROGATE, Tenn. (Nov. 12) – Behind four wins via decision, the Trojans opened South Atlantic Conference Carolinas (SACC) action with a 40-6 win over Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive men’s wrestling team improve to 1-0 in dual meets this year. The Trojans put together another impressive performance over the weekend after beginning the 2022-23 campaign with 10 podium finishers at the Pembroke Classic. Meanwhile, the Railsplitters fall to 0-1 on the season with an identical conference mark after beginning both wrestling programs back in 2020-21.

Freshman Jeffrey Richards continued his strong start to his collegiate career after securing a victory by fall against Andrew Overbay at 133 to total five points toward the team score. Last week, he boast a perfect 5-0 record in the individual tournament at UNCP and claimed the title in his weight class.

Redshirt freshman Taylor Robinson (141) recorded a 5-3 win via decision over Kade Millsaps before teammate Dallas Wilson added four points behind a victory by 16-1 technical fall over Graham Rocha in the 149 weight class. Redshirt junior Michael Vernagallo (157) also notched a win by decision, 8-7, to tally three points.

Limestone Saints Crush Liberty, 26-7

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The No. 17 Limestone University women’s wrestling team earned a dominant victory over Liberty University on Saturday, November 12. The Saints secured 26 points with two pinfalls and four wins via technical fall. 

Sophomore Caroline Schmitt (Orlando, Fla.) got things rolling for Limestone with a flawless 10-0 technical fall win over Youngseo Choi in the 123-lb. division. Liberty earned their only win of the day in the 130-lb. division via forfeit. Newberry Wolves Opens First Dual With A Victory

A close bout comes down to the last match, but Wolves show character in first win
BELMONT, N.C. — Coming off of their opening tournament at the Southeast Open, the Wolves traveled to Belmont, North Carolina, to take on the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. It would be a battle of top three teams in Super Region II and the Coastal Carolinas Conference as Newberry (2nd) would look to open the first dual of the season with a victory against the Crusaders (3rd). 

The evening would get off to a rapid start as Dayton Fields (174 lbs; Seneca, Mo.) would secure a major decision victory in the first match by a score of 9-1. The 184 lb. match would go to the Crusaders, but the next two matches would result in Newberry victories. Devon Rice (285 lbs; Rock Hill, S.C.) and John Parker (197 lbs; Temecula, Calif.) would take care of their individual matches, with Rice winning by a decision 3-0 and Parker pinning his opponent at the 4:35 mark.
