Missouri and Cornell make most noticeable jumps in WIN Jan. 9 rankings
NEWTON, Iowa — Missouri and Cornell made the most noticeable jumps in WIN Magazine’s Jan. 9 Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
The Tigers, featuring eight ranked wrestlers, including a pair of top-ranked wrestlers — Keegan O’Toole (165) and Rocky Elam (197) — have moved ahead of Iowa for second place in WIN’s Tournament Power Index with 67 TPI points. The Hawkeyes, with nine ranked wrestlers and a top-ranked wrestler in Spencer Lee (125), are now in third place with 64 TPI points.
Cornell, meanwhile, made the biggest jump in WIN’s Dual Rankings as the Big Red defeated both Arizona State and Virginia Tech in road victories last week to climb from 15th to No. 9 with a 4-2 record.
WIN’s Tournament Power Index projects where schools will finish in the 2023 NCAA Championships, held this March in Tulsa, Okla. The following is a breakdown of the points from the TPI, based on a wrestler’s ranking: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.
Defending NCAA champion Penn State features nine ranked wrestlers — including four who are ranked No. 1 nationally at their weight: Roman Bravo-Young (133), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (184) and Greg Kerkvliet (Hwt). The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 1 in both WIN’s TPI and Dual Rankings with an 8-0 record. The Hawkeyes remain No. 2 at 9-0. The Big Ten rivals are scheduled to meet Jan. 27 in State College, Pa.
The other top-ranked individual wrestlers remain the same from a week ago. 7 Big Stories from the Week in College Wrestling (1/9/2023)
The first full week of the new year in the college wrestling season did not disappoint as we saw plenty of upsets, individually and team-based, along with standout performances from the sport’s best, coupled with some emerging stars.
It also marked the start of the Big Ten dual schedule which always leads to intriguing matchups, again, individually and team-based. In addition, six duals featured top-15 teams squaring off in dual competition.
With so much going on there’s any number of different talking points to hit on, but we’ve narrowed it down to 7 big stories from the week in college wrestling.
#1 Goes Down at 141 lbs
There was some controversy surrounding InterMat’s rankings at 141 lbs. Top-ranked Cole Matthews of Pittsburgh was bested in the All-Star Classic exhibition match in late-November. #3 Andrew Alirez (Northern Colorado) was impressive in his victory over Matthews and looked deserving of the top spot. I don’t disagree with that notion; however, the entire dual was built around the fact that these are exhibition matches which will not count on a wrestler’s record or factor in towards NCAA seeding. … rest of story at Intermatwrestle.com/articles/26406

Pitt Falls to West Virginia in Backyard Brawl Dual
PITTSBURGH—The Backyard Brawl proved to be just that in Sunday’s Pitt-West Virginia wrestling match, with several contests coming down to crazy scrambles and last-second decisions.
Unfortunately for the No. 21 Panthers, the Mountaineers (6-1) won the majority of those crucial moments and emerged from Fitzgerald Field House with a 24-11 dual victory.
Winning bouts for the Panthers were No. 7 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds with a major decision over WVU’s Davin Rhoads, Luca Augustine at 174 pounds with a nice win over Brody Conley and No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds with a typically dominant performance against Brian Finnerty.
Close defeats defined the dual. The Panthers (5-2) fell in tight bouts at 125 pounds, 141, 157 and lost key scrambles that determined outcomes at 165 and 184 pounds.
“Disappointed with losing so many matches that were decided in the third period,” Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said afterwards. “Give credit to West Virginia; they wrestled tough. But we need to work on some things and come back strong next time out.” … rest of story at Pittsburghpanthers.com/news/2023/1/8/wrestling-pitt-falls-to-west-virginia-in-backyard-brawl-dual

Key takeaways from No. 1 Penn State wrestling’s 28-11 win over No. 11 Wisconsin
In the first six bouts of Friday’s night dual between No. 1 Penn State and No. 12 Wisconsin, the Badgers did everything they could to keep the score close. They racked up an early tech fall at 125, they won a big ranked bout at 149 and they earned bonus points at 165 pounds. They were in this match, at least through the first half. But, in the end, the Nittany Lions did what they have done so many times: they took over in the upper weights.
LOOKING AHEAD: Biggest names and teams to know in college wrestling in 2023
Headlined by Aaron Brooks’ technical fall over Tyler Dow, Penn State rolled out four of the five most dominant wrestlers in its lineup in the second half of the dual and pulled away for a definitive victory 28-11 against the Badgers. Here’s what we learned about the statement performance from the Blue and White in Madison.
Bonus points defined Friday night’s performances

New year, new storylines: Top names and teams to know for the rest of the 2022-2023 college wrestling season
Here’s a look ahead at some of the interesting storylines still to come and athletes to watch that may have been under the radar at the start of the year:
Southern Scuffle features another slate of top-tier matchups
The annual Southern Scuffle held in Chattanooga, TN is the best way to start the new year.
MIDLANDS & SOLDIER SALUTE: Here are the key results from the other major winter tournaments
This season, nearly two dozen teams are competing in this southern event with the hopes of picking up some individual-ranked wins and setting themselves up for a strong second half of the year. The Missouri Tigers won this event in 2022, but with the absence of former Scuffle champs Keegan O’Toole and Rocky Elam, the Tigers will have a harder time defending their crown. They’ll be pushed most intensely by fellow Big 12 foe, Oklahoma State, as the Cowboys bring a number of ranked wrestlers and national qualifiers to the mat including three-time NCAA runner-up Daton Fix and All-Americans Travis Wittlake, Dustin Plott and Wyatt Sheets.
On an individual level, Stanford’s Shane Griffith will start the year looking for his second career Scuffle title at 165 pounds while Northern Colorado’s Andrew Alirez works to win his first crown in Chattanooga following a hot start to the season for the veteran Bear wrestler. The Scuffle always brings great storylines and exciting bouts, and this year will be no different. But the excitement doesn’t end when the finals are over on January 2. The rest of the wrestling season brings even more intrigue and interest and teams begin preparing for conference duals and peaking for the postseason.
The rise of Iowa State expected to continue behind strong freshmen and stellar leadership
The Iowa State Cyclones have been one of the biggest stories of the season thus far, as they came out of the gates on fire with dominant wins over Little Rock, Campbell and, most notably No. 11 Wisconsin. The team has no fear and no doubts. Led by NCAA champion David Carr and All-Americans Marcus Coleman and Yonger Bastida, the Cyclones gave the Iowa Hawkeyes everything they had during the annual Cy-Hawk dual, winning five matches and finishing within three points of the 2021 NCAA champion Hawks. … rest of story at NCAA.com/news/wrestling/article/2023-01-01/new-year-new-storylines-top-names-and-teams-know-rest-2022-2023-college-wrestling

Perennial Powers Grand View, St. Cloud State, Augsburg Claim Duals Titles
The NWCA National Duals featured breakthroughs by upstart programs and individual upsets, but three longstanding powers stood tallest in the end.
The 2023 edition of the NWCA National Duals featured breakthrough performances by upstart programs and stunning individual upsets, but three of college wrestling’s longstanding powers stood tallest in the end.
Grand View captured its 11th straight title in NAIA, St. Cloud State returned to the top of the NCAA Division II heap and Augsburg claimed its eighth D3 title Saturday in Louisville.
Here’s a look at some of the top developments from the second day of the duals:
— Grand View entered the weekend as the prohibitive NAIA favorite and the Vikings made light work of their bracket destruction. The Vikings notched a 36-0 semifinal win against a Doane squad that withheld several of its top stars and then completed their title run by beating Life in the finals for the National Duals finals for the fourth straight time.
Grand View swept the first five matches against Life. In a rematch of last year’s NAIA title bout and a showdown between the past two national champions at 125 pounds, Grand View’s Esco Walker scored an overtime takedown to beat Brandon Orum 4-2. The Vikings also picked up a 6-1 win from top-ranked 133-pounder Carson Taylor against #3 Jacob Ruiz and fourth-ranked Blake Gonzalez downed #2 Brevin Balmeceda 9-5 at 149 to help launch Grand View out to a 16-0 dual lead.

King, SOU Women Win Down-To-The-Wire National Duals Thrillers
It came down to the last match, but King and Southern Oregon pulled off dramatic wins at the NWCA National Duals.
If dramatic finishes are your thing, then King and Southern Oregon delivered must-watch finals at the NWCA National Duals.
The top-seeded Tornado entered the tournament short-handed and still pulled out the win. Head coach Jason Moorman didn’t have a 191-pounder all weekend but he used a strategic move for a 22-20 win over a powerful North Central squad.
King was ahead 20-15 after 155 pounds when the team forfeited against North Central’s nearly unstoppable Yelena Makoyed at 170 pounds. How good is Makoyed? Well, she won three international ranking tournaments in 2022 and pinned the reigning World champion at the World Cup.
So, yeah, she’s pretty stellar.
Moorman bumped up Cheyenne Bowman to take on Traeh Haynes at 191 pounds. Bowman controlled the match from the start for a 5-1 win and a team title for the Tornado.
The turning point was at 136 pounds when King’s Viktorya … rest of story at Flowrestling.org/articles/10306569-king-sou-women-win-down-to-the-wire-national-duals-thrillers
