The top contenders for a national title at 149 pounds, beginning with Yianni’s chase for history

The biggest storyline at 149 pounds this year is simple: Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis is on the hunt for his fourth national title, a feat that only four wrestlers in history have ever accomplished.

It’s a storyline Diakomihalis knows people want to talk about, one that could put his name in the record books forever. But it’s also a story that creates motivation for every wrestler in the country at his weight. He’s not just someone going for his fourth national title, he’s a wrestler going for his fourth title in a weight class full of contenders.

GREATEST EVER: Cael Sanderson | Dan Gable | Kyle Dake | Jordan Burroughs

“This whole summer, I was training to beat one guy, and that’s Yianni,” Wisconsin All-American Austin Gomez said in an interview with NCAA.com “I want to go out and make history and be the guy that stops Yianni from winning his fourth national title. I don’t think that’s been done, a guy being stopped from winning four.”

Gomez, a sixth-year junior for the Wisconsin Badgers, made progress toward that goal when he shocked the wrestling world with his upset win over the three-time champ in November, delivering Diakomihalis his first loss since 2017 in decisive fashion.

Gomez always believed he could pull off the upset, but he knows just what a big deal that win was for him, his team, and 149 pounds as a whole. It was a victory that put the rest of the weight class on notice.

“[That win] boosted my confidence a lot, just saying that like ‘Hey, he’s not the guy at this weight class, there’s a new dog in town, and that’s Austin Gomez,” Gomez said. “I think it just gave me so much more confidence, but it also put a target on my back because they know, all the 149-pounders know, now that this weight class got blown up after I beat Yianni.”

BIGGEST UPSET: Here’s how Austin Gomez topped the three-time champ

Despite the result of that bout, Diakomihalis held down the top ranking in the weight class. Gomez had taken a loss earlier this year to Iowa State’s Paniro Johnson, and he later took a second loss by injury default to Northwestern’s Yahya Thomas in late January. His notable wins though, … rest of story at NCAA.com/news/wrestling/article/2023-02-10/top-contenders-national-title-149-pounds-beginning-yiannis-chase-history

Five Wrestlers Scoop Up a W in PC’s First SoCon Victory on Senior Day

CLINTON, S.C. – Honoring the first two recruits to ever join the program for an extra-emotional senior day presentation prior to the Presbyterian College Men’s Wrestling team’s final Templeton appearance of the semester, Jacob Brasseur and Khalid Brinkley’s swansong foreshadowed a raucous finish in Clinton on Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hose achieved their first Southern Conference win of the year in a head-to-head war with Gardner-Webb, 19-18.

PC’s thrilling triumph over the Runnin’ Bulldogs served as a long-term reward for the many near misfires that the squad endured preceding Sunday’s match-clinching moment, a 13-1 MD dominated by heavyweight Malcolm Wiley against GW’s Abraham Preston. Zach Wells (174) and Dominic Chavez (125) both aided Presbyterian’s winning effort in a crucial SoCon affair, as did Brinkley and Brasseur in pulse-pounding finishes within minutes of each other, sending the Blue Hose faithful out of their seats in the process.

In contrast to a majority of PC’s conference duals – falling behind early, storming back from a looming deficit only to ultimately come up empty-handed – this time the roles reversed with Gardner-Webb forced to play catch-up thanks to a nine-point hole dug out by head coach Mark Cody‘s club. Just as it seemed that the Runnin’ Bulldogs would steal another one by taking their first lead in the penultimate bout at 18-15, Wiley ensured the ending was more storybook than catastrophe by grabbing arguably the biggest four points of Presbyterian’s season to rapturous applause.

None of the engulfed post-match adulation would have been possible without the early successes of Brinkley and Brasseur in their final Clinton chapter, the former gifting the Blue Hose six points on an exquisite sub-six-minute cradle pin and the latter earning a stringent 3-1 decision two contests later.

Those results – plus a match-opening 8-2 decision from Chavez – allowed coach Cody’s group to reach their largest advantage in any SoCon bout this season (nine points). Chavez, a junior who seemingly keeps gaining momentum … rest of story at GObluehose.com/news/2023/2/12/mens-wrestling-five-wrestlers-scoop-up-win-pcs-first-socon-victory-on-senior-day

Buckeye wrestling wins State Duals title; Brecksville, Rootstown second, Wadsworth third

Make no mistake. Finishing in the top three in the Division I State Duals is an accomplishment.

It’s also a bitter pill at the same time.

Brecksville finished second for the third consecutive season behind five-time reigning champion St. Edward in a 35-21 loss Saturday.

Wadsworth was third for the second season in a row with a 44-21 win over Dublin Coffman in the consolation final.

That said, the Grizzlies lost 41-14 to the Bees in the semifinals in consecutive seasons.

Wadsworth, Brecksville Wrestling:Bees, Grizzlies flex muscles at Suburban League Championships

“We walk out with a sour taste, and I think that says something,” Brecksville coach Todd Haverdill said. “The last couple years they just put it on us and we’re just like, ‘Hey, they’re better than us.’ Today, there were some matches that were tight and a couple could go the other way. We got a real interesting finish, so I’m really proud of their effort. But we didn’t come here to take a second.”

The Bees tied things with the host Eagles at 15 with six matches to go but fell behind down the stretch.

Brock Herman (144 pounds) and Max Vanadia (215) were the only three-time winners. David Zambounis (150) went 2-0.

“I mean, Ed’s is really good,” Herman said. “They’re the top team. They’re always going to be the top team coming in here, so you can’t be upset with second place. Come the (individual) state tournament, we’ll be ready.” … rest of story at AKRONBeaconjournal.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2023/02/12/greater-akron-area-wrestling-teams-strong-at-state-duals-tournaments-buckeye-brecksville-wadsworth
