1 } – MAC West Champions!

Chippewa wrestlers down Buffalo to repeat as division champions

Vince Perez posted a third-period pin in the 133-pound match on Sunday in helping to spark CMU to a dual meet victory at Buffalo.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – It’s not about how you start, but how you finish.
And, as usual, the finish looks pretty good for CMU wrestling under veteran coach Tom Borrelli.
The Chippewas got an early pin from Vince Perez and won eight matches on Sunday in downing Buffalo, 27-6, in a Mid-American Conference dual meet at the Bulls’ Alumni Arena.
The Chippewas finished 5-1 in MAC duals, claiming their second consecutive MAC West championship. They are 6-8 overall after an 0-5 start that included a 25-12 loss to Clarion in their Jan. 8 league opener. Buffalo is 7-12, 3-3.
“The good thing is they’ve continued to get better,” Borrelli said of his wrestlers. “I’ve seen in it in practice. You’re going to wrestle in competition the way you practice. Our guys are really getting after it in practice; they’re really pushing each other. I think they feed off each other a lot, especially in dual meets.
“I don’t know how good we are, but we’ve continued to get better. We’ll figure out at the MAC tournament how good we really are. I think the MAC tournament’s going to be really, really close. Every team’s pretty even in our league; there’s no dominant team.”
The Chippewas were plenty dominant on Sunday. They scored the first point and got the first takedown in all eight of their victories and scored a riding-time point in five of their victories.
The Chippewas recorded 14 takedowns to the Bulls’ three. Buffalo did not post a takedown until the 184-pound match and by then, CMU had won the first seven matches in building an insurmountable 24-0 lead. … rest of story at CMUchippewas.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling-mac-west-champions

2 } – Rider Sweeps MAC Weekend With Win Over Clarion

Rider goes 2-0 in the Keystone State with wins vs Edinboro, Clarion

CLARION, PA– The Rider Broncs Wrestling team finished their weekend with a 25-12 win vs. MAC leader Clarion to sweep the weekend vs conference opponents. With the win, Rider moves to 6-5 overall and 4-1 in the MAC.

Rider was led to victory by #29 McKenzie Bell, #22 Quinn Kinner, and #5 Ethan Laird, who all were able to pick up bonus point wins on the afternoon. Bell continued his hot streak with his seventh major of the year and his third in a row, outsourcing opponents 27-0 in his last three bouts.

Kinner also pitched a shutout at 149 with a 16-0 tech fall win vs Seth Koleno for the Golden Eagles. For the Broncs 149-pounder, it’s his fourth tech fall of the season.

Laird continued his dominance in the MAC staying undefeated with a 13-5 major decision at 197. Laird who currently ranks as high as fourth in the nation by the NCAA RPI rankings, gained his ninth-straight win and stays perfect in conference duals at 5-0 with four bonus point victories. … rest of story at GObroncs.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling-rider-sweeps-mac-weekend-with-win-over-clarion

3 } – Trojans Split Matches to Close Regular Season with Program-Best Dual Record

Little Rock rolls over Ohio, in the thick of match against SIUE in back-to-back duals

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Little Rock wrestling team split back-to-back duals with MAC teams Ohio and SIUE this afternoon to conclude the regular season, rolling over Ohio 28-12 before dropping a tight match 14-22 to hosts SIUE right after. The Trojans collected five dual wins this year, more than the past three seasons combined.
“Today’s a tale of two tapes,” said head coach Neil Erisman. “We responded in the first one. When you come and wrestle tough teams that don’t expect to lose to you, you can give them a reason to lay down, and we did that to Ohio in the first match.”
“We had so many opportunities to flip flop the SIUE score,” Coach Erisman continued. “Instead of going out and executing in that moment, we held on to win instead of going and taking it and putting people away. I’m happy with a lot of things today, but there were some little things in the SIUE match that are frustrating.”
Three Little Rock wrestlers ended with perfect 2-0 days: Jeremiah RenoMatty Bianchi and Tyler Brennan
Reno boasts a 16-7 mark to lead the team in individual wins, finishing the regular season with a four-win streak to turn in a 10-4 dual record. Bianchi moves a 13-10 record, 9-6 in duals, while Brennan reached double-digit wins at 11-5 and 8-5 in duals.
“Jeremiah improved on the second match,” commented Coach Erisman. “It’s great to see him bounce back after being a little frazzled in the first match but still finding a way to win and close out the dual season like that.”
“Matty was gritty today,” observed head coach Neil Erisman. “He’s turning a corner. He’s listening and mindful of what he’s supposed to be doing. When he does that and sticks to the plan, he’s stinking tough and hard to beat.”
“Tyler is sticking to his gameplan and staying solid to it,” Coach Erisman added. “The more that he realizes he can do what he did in the second time, he’s going to be tough to beat and is going to be in every day.”
Stephen Little also was undefeated, going 1-0 after solely appearing in the Ohio match to claim his tenth win of the year. The true freshman was described by Coach Erisman as “a breath of fresh air” as well as one to watch next year. … rest of story at Lrtrojans.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling-trojans-split-matches-to-close-regular-season-with-program-best-dual-record

5 } – Gerlach’s Pin Secures the Victory for CBU in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD— The California Baptist University wrestling team faced off against the Cal State Bakersfield of the PAC-12 in a non-conference match in Bakersfield. The Lancers looked to avenge a tight loss they suffered in their previous meeting in 2022, in which Bakersfield won 20-19. CBU achieved this goal with an entertaining back-and-forth win over the Roadrunners 23-17.

The Lancers picked up their third win of the season and their second dual road victory while handing the Roadrunners their fifth home loss. CBU won six of the ten bouts on the afternoon with a pin, two technical falls, a major decision, and one decision.

The Lancers and Roadrunners engaged in a back-and-forth affair that saw five lead changes and two ties. Hunter Leake kickstarted the dual for CBU with a resounding 16-0 technical fall victory over his opponent. Leake accumulated 12 nearfall points and three minutes of riding time in the match. Chaz Hallmark tied the match at eight by securing his riding time point with three seconds on the clock. The victory was Hallmark’s second dual win of the season and key to the Lancer win. … rest of story at Cbulancers.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling-gerlachs-pin-secures-the-victory-for-cbu-in-bakersfield

6 } – American Wrestling Falls 28-13 to Air Force in Sunday Dual

WASHINGTON – Three individual wins were a highlight for American University wrestling, but not enough against a strong Air Force team and the Eagles fell 28-13 to the Falcons in front of a crowd of 447 at Bender Arena. The Eagles now stand at 7-10 for the season, while Air Force improves to 8-4.

Notable

  • Freshman Caleb Campos earned a major decision victory at 165 pounds, his team-leading sixth of the season, against freshman Seamus Casey.
  • Campos got the first takedown early and led 5-3 after the first period. His escape in the second was the only point scored in that frame, but he added two more takedowns and a two-point near fall in the third along with the crucial riding time point for a 12-4 victory.
  • Wrestling up a weight class and winning was freshman Raymond Lopez, who weighed in at 133 but took on 141-pounder Garrett Kuchan of Air Force. It was quite a comeback win as Lopez trailed 5-2 after two periods, but dominated in the third with an escape, a takedown and a four-point near fall for the 9-6 victory.
  • Despite looking strong with a 5-3 lead late in the third period, for redshirt junior Connor Bourne it turned into a second-straight day with a win by injury default at 197 pounds.

8 } – Bellarmine Wrestling earns tough comeback win over The Citadel, claims third SoCon victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In its second dual in as many days, Bellarmine wrestling responded to a loss on Friday night with a comeback victory over The Citadel on Saturday evening at Knights Hall.
After falling behind 11-0, the Knights (11-3, 3-3 SoCon) rallied with 22 consecutive points and held on for a 22-14 win.
“This was an incredible performance by our men,” Knights Head Coach Ned Shuck said.  “The guys had each other’s backs. Sometimes things don’t go as planned and you need someone to pick you up. Our men did that for each other, for the program, and for the university tonight.”
The Citadel (6-5, 2-5 SoCon) had the early momentum with major decision victories at 125 and 133.  The Bulldogs nabbed another win by decision at 141, but then the scoring drought hit for the visitors.
Bellarmine’s Zac Cowan battled into extra time to beat Ethan Willis 5-3 with a takedown at 149.  Tavius Hosley followed with a hard-fought 3-1 victory by decision at 157.  Cole Nance kept it rolling with BU’s first extra points of the night, handling Aidan Lenz 10-2 for a major decision win at 165.  Devan Hendricks proceeded to beat Benjy Haubert at 174 by a final score of 2-1 thanks to a riding time point.
Following the 174 bout, Bellarmine led 13-11.  A massive swing occurred in the 184 match with Kennedy Wyatt besting Will Rogers 5-4.  Wyatt trailed by one point with just seconds remaining, but the freshman earned a takedown with one second remaining on the clock to win the bout and put BU ahead 16-11.
Royce Hall sealed the match at 197 with a third period pin of Mark Chaid (5:43), giving Bellarmine its final six points.  The Knights held on for a 22-14 win and moved evened its conference record at 3-3. … rest of story at Bellarmine.edu/news/2023/2/11/wrestling-earns-tough-comeback-win-over-the-citadel-claims-third-socon-victory

The LHU men’s wrestling team faced a double dip of road duals on Saturday, and came out on top both times

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Facing a busy Saturday of back-to-back road duals, the Division I Lock Haven University men’s wrestling team (7-6, 4-1 MAC) toppled George Mason University (11-7, 2-3 MAC) in Mid-American Conference (MAC) action before steamrolling American University (7-9) in non-conference action.
Behind the pair of dual wins, the Bald Eagles stretched their winning streak to five in a row with just two duals remaining before the postseason.

1 } – Gophers Outlast Badgers For Border Battle Win

MADISON – A back-and-forth contest on Saturday afternoon went the way of the No. 9 Gophers, as they knocked off No. 19 Wisconsin by a score of 19-15.

With both teams splitting the ten bouts on the day, it was Minnesota’s ability to find bonus-points that proved to be the deciding factor as the Maroon & Gold was able to find a pair of bonus-point wins in the dual.

Kicking off the dual at 149 pounds, Michael Blockhus secured a third-period fall over Aidan Medora to put six on the scoreboard for Minnesota. Blockhus was well in control throughout the match, securing seven takedowns and a pair of turns before hitting a cow-catcher midway through the final frame to pin Medora.

Wisconsin would take the next two matches to tie the dual before Bailee O’Reilly rolled to a methodical 14-4 major decision win over Josh Otto. The grad student put on a clinic in the neutral position with five takedowns in the match, and collected over three minutes of riding time in the victory.

The Gophers continued to roll at 184 pounds, where Sam Skillings would fill in for teammate Isaiah Salazar and defeat Wisconsin’s Tyler Dow by 11-4 decision. Skillings controlled the match from start to finish, taking advantage of his reattacks to take down Dow five times throughout the match.

Wisconsin came out of the halftime break by rattling off three one-point victories to jump out front 15-13 and take their first lead of the dual, but Aaron Nagao would make his return to the lineup at 133 pounds … rest of story at Gophersports.com/news/2023/2/11/wrestling-gophers-outlast-badgers-for-border-battle-win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team rallied from an initial deficit, winning five of the final seven bouts to defeat No. 22 Indiana, 23-18, in its Big Ten dual finale on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 12) in front of 1,463 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.

The Wolverines kickstarted the rally with three consecutive bonus wins — major decisions for Mason Parris and Jack Medley and heavyweight at 125 pounds, respectively, and a quick first-period pin for Dylan Ragusin at 133 pounds.

Parris, the nation’s No. 1 heavyweight, earned his second ranked win of the weekend with an 18-4 major decision over 23rd-ranked Jacob Bullock. Parris scored five takedowns, including two apiece in the first and third periods, and added a four-point arm bar in the former. He tried for the technical fall late and scored his final takedown off a leg attack — nearly putting Bullock on his back — in the final 10 seconds. He improved to 24-0 on the season.

Medley, ranked 18th at 125 pounds, scored 10 takedowns, … rest of story at Mgoblue.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling-bonus-points-key-win-over-indiana-in-b1g-dual-finale

3 } – No. 13 ‘Cats Derail Boilermakers, 30-12

Northwestern victorious in all eight matches contested in Big Ten dual meet finale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (February 12, 2023) – No. 13 Northwestern wrestling (7-3, 5-3 B1G) put an exclamation point on a banner weekend this afternoon, rolling to a 30-12 win over Purdue inside Holloway Gymnasium in West Lafayette, Ind.
Today’s victory sees the Wildcats close the regular season at 7-3 overall, marking the first time since the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons that the program has posted back-to-back winning seasons.  Northwestern also closed the year a 5-3 mark in Big Ten dual meets, its first winning conference campaign since 2017-18.
The ‘Cats were victorious in all eight contested bouts this afternoon, picking up bonus points in five matches.  Northwestern was dominant across the board, finishing the day with a 26-1 advantage in takedowns.
Trevor Chumbley was a force on the day at 157 pounds, bullying Brennan Doyle from the onset in a comprehensive 17-1 win by technical fall.  The St. Charles, Ill. native used a pair of four-point near falls to pad his advantage ahead of a takedown 24 seconds into the third period to cement his 21st win of the year. … rest of story at NUsports.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling-no-13-cats-derail-boilermakers-30-12

4 } – Penn State Takes Down Maryland 44-3 to Claim Big Ten Regular Season Title

Nittany Lions win ninth B1G dual crown, all under head coach Cael Sanderson

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Penn State (15-0, 8-0 B1G) took down visiting Maryland (9-8, 1-7 B1G) 44-3 in sold out Rec Hall on Sunday to claim the 2023 Big Ten Regular Season (dual meet) Championship. The Nittany Lions won nine of ten bouts, seven for bonus. All rankings listed are InterMat/InterMat Team TPI (Feb. 7, 2023).
For the Nittany Lions, it is the ninth time they have won (or shared) the conference’s regular season title (all under head coach Cael Sanderson). Penn State’s regular season conference title list includes 2012 (co-), 2014 (co-), 2016 (co-), 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 (co-), 2022, and now 2023. This marks the eighth time that Penn State has finished the Big Ten dual season without a loss or tie, the seventh under Sanderson.
The dual meet began at 125 where redshirt freshman Gary Steen took No. 15 Braxton Brown to the wire before losing a tough 1-0 decision. Roman Bravo-Young, ranked No. 1 at 133, put Penn State on top for good however with a rousing win at 133.  Bravo-Young tallied 14 takedowns in a 28-13 technical fall over King Sandoval (6:45). Beau Bartlett, ranked No. 6 at 141, used a reversal and a takedown to post a 5-2 win over Kal Miller, giving Penn State an 8-3 lead.

5 } – B1G Takeaways from Week Six of Conference Dual Season

This week marked the end of the 2022-23 Big Ten dual schedule and the close of the regular season for some, while a few teams still have one more nonconference dual remaining. Penn State was named the Big Ten regular season champs, Maryland earned its first conference win since 2016 and wrestlers made final pushes to position themselves for Big Ten seeding.

Here are our takeaways, and BIG Awards at the bottom!

Hawkeyes beat up the Wolverines

Iowa has been an interesting dual meet team this season. It’s been pretty clear that they are the second-best team in the country since the start, but like most teams, injuries and some surprising results at times have had them wrestle some close duals at times this season. Wisconsin and Illinois were both closer than anyone would have guessed; however, this past Friday night in Carver Hawkeye arena we saw a team that is going to be dangerous in March. The Michigan Wolverines traveled to town in what was expected to be a fun dual to round out the B1G schedule for both teams. Sadly for Michigan, the season has taken out a lot of their wrestlers, leaving them without many of their starters. I expected we wouldn’t get Mattin at 141, and Amine at 165, but not having Ragusin out there at 133 was a surprise, and the less-than-pleasant kind. Last I’d seen of Ragusin, he was being pinned by Daton Fix, so not sure if his missing the Iowa match was rest related, or if this is some injury concern. Ragusin did wrestle against Indiana, where he pinned his opponent, so I suspect this was just some preventative maintenance. On the flip side though, it was a pleasant kind of surprise seeing Chance Lamer back in the lineup for the Wolverines. He had a tough match against Max Murin at 149, but he remained competitive against a bruising veteran in the sixth-ranked Murin. The Hawkeyes looked really good though, taking out the Wolverine backups … rest of story at https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/26505

6 } – Huskers Collect Fifth Straight Dual Victory

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska wrestling team (11-3, 7-1) tallied seven bout victories en route to the Huskers’ 27-10 victory over Rutgers in front of 1,545 fans at the Devaney Center.

No. 5 Brock Hardy (141) highlighted the day with a technical fall, and No. 1 Peyton Robb (157) and No. 2 Mikey Labriola (174) claimed a pair of victories to remain undefeated at 22-0.

Competition started at 197 with No. 10 Silas Allred facing Billy Janzer of Rutgers (10-7, 2-6 Big Ten). Allred scored a pair of takedowns en route to the 6-0 decision. At HWT, Cale Davidson battled No. 21 Boone McDermott, but fell by major decision, 12-3.

Up next, No. 5 Liam Cronin tallied a 3-1 decision over Rutgers’ No. 16 Dean Peterson. Cronin used an escape and a late takedown in Period 3 to claim his third-straight conference victory. Boo Dryden then got the call at 133 against No. 15 Joe Heilmann. Dryden scored an opening takedown, but Heilmann responded to get the 6-3 decision.

With the Huskers trailing 7-6, Hardy flipped the momentum with a major decision over Rutgers’ Devon Britton. Hardy scored a takedown in each period and added eight nearfall points to grab the 18-3 win.

At 149, Dayne Morton struck first with a takedown in period one, answered by an Anthony White escape. A pair of stall warnings against White in the second period added to Morton’s lead. In the final period, White tallied an escape, a takedown and the riding time point to defeat Morton in a 5-3 decision.

Top-ranked Robb (157) kept his perfect record intact with an 11-3 major decision over Andrew Clark. In the opening period, Robb recorded a takedown and two nearfall swipes to jump out to the 4-0 lead. A second period reversal increased his advantage to 6-0 entering the final two minutes. A pair of takedowns and the riding time point secured the major for Robb and stretched Nebraska’s lead to 15-10.

Bubba Wilson (165) used a big third period takedown to defeat Al DeSantis in a 6-3 decision. … rest of story at https://huskers.com/news/2023/2/12/wrestling-recap.aspx

1 } – WVU Takes Care of Air Force to Close Out Big 12 Slate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After falling behind 9-0 in the opening two matches, the West Virginia University wrestling team battled back to secure a 20-18 victory over Air Force to conclude its Big 12 schedule in front of 756 passionate fans inside the WVU Coliseum on Friday night.
“We had some guys in who hadn’t been in the lineup at 125 and 133, and knew that they were really tough at heavyweight, so we had to get some wins in that middle stretch there,” fifth-year WVU coach Tim Flynn said. “It was crazy because it wasn’t like we were killing them, but we got the win, which is important.”
Air Force (7-4, 3-4 Big 12), who received two votes in this week’s NWCA Division I Coaches’ Poll, started strong with wins at 125 and 133 pounds, before West Virginia (8-5, 2-5 Big 12) went on a 20-0 run, highlighted by a pair of major decisions from junior Peyton Hall (165) and senior Scott Joll (174).
Prior to Hall and Joll, junior Caleb Dowling took down Air Force’s Jack Ganos as time expired to tie the dual up at 9-9.
Three bouts later, redshirt junior Anthony Carman won a defensive battle over the Falcons’ Noah Blake to give the Mountaineers a cushion heading into the final two bouts of the night. … rest of story at WVUsports.com/news/2023/2/10/wrestling-wvu-takes-care-of-air-force-to-close-out-big-12-slate

6 } – Cowboys Roll Over Stanford, 25-9

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated Stanford, 25-9, inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday to improve to 13-2 on the season.
The Cowboys won seven of 10 bouts, which included bonus-point wins from Travis Wittlake and Luke Surber. No. 7 Oklahoma State has now won four straight and 10 of its last 11 duals heading into the final week of its regular season schedule.
“You get into the duals and you kind of know what your team is,” head coach John Smith said. “This is kind of how we’ve had to win, like six to seven guys wrestle pretty good. I really thought even (Victor Voinovich) had a pretty good match and (Wyatt) Sheets had a pretty good match… I thought (Wittlake) did a nice job. I would’ve liked to see him get that escape after he got taken down late, while kind of pressing the pace. It was a little bit of a sloppy shot, and that’s what happens sometimes, but, good effort by Travis. I thought Luke really bounced back from his match in South Dakota. I watched [Nick Stemmet] wrestle several times. I believe we wrestled him in Stanford (last season) and it was actually a competitive match. It looked like (Surber) had a purpose. I wasn’t expecting that out of him tonight, so it was good to see. Doucet kind of same as usual, good 7-2 victory.”
Daton Fix and Carter Young began the dual with victories to build up a 6-0 Cowboy lead. Fix notched his 20th win of the season with a 6-1 decision over No. 28 Jason Miranda, while Young took down Jason Miranda twice in the first period en route to a 6-3 decision.
After Victor Voinovich suffered a close loss to No. 11 Jaden Abas at 149 pounds, No. 10 Kaden Gfeller put the Pokes back on track. In his second to last match in Gallagher-Iba Arena, … rest of story at OKstate.com/news/2023/2/12/cowboy-wrestling-cowboys-roll-over-stanford-25-9
