Sooners Bounce Back with Win Over No. 21 West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Oklahoma wrestling picked up its first road conference win of the season after defeating No. 21 West Virginia 21-19 on Sunday. The Sooners (4-1 overall, 2-1 Big 12) bounced back from Friday night’s loss at No. 3 Missouri by winning six matches against the Mountaineers, earning bonus points in two bouts. The Big 12 battle was highlighted by the match winning takedown in the closing seconds of the heavyweight bout for Josh Heindselman and the fifth tech fall victory of the season for Stephen Buchanan.
The 125-pounders started the match, which meant Conrad Hendriksen (5-2) was the first to take the mat for the Sooners. He faced No. 26 Jett Strickenberger and delivered the Mountaineer lightweight his first defeat of the season. A takedown, two escapes and a stalling point helped Hendriksen to his first ranked win of the year, winning by a 6-4 decision.
Next up was No. 33 Jace Koelzer (7-2), who was looking for his second win of the weekend. The Northern Colorado transfer faced off against Davin Rhoads and wasted no time getting points on the board. Three takedowns, a pair of escapes and three minutes of riding time helped the redshirt senior cruise to a 12-4 major decision in the 133-pound bout.
At 141, No. 8 Mosha Schwartz (4-0) suffered a first period injury during an escape attempt by his opponent No. 17 Jordan Titus. Titus was credited the win via injury default to give the Mountaineers six team points. … rest of story at … Soonersports.com/Sooners-bounce-back-with-win-over-no-21-west-virginia
Big Weekend for Little Rock: Undefeated at Dragon Duals, Ranked Wins at Cougar Clash
The starting lineup took down Drexel and Clarion in back-to-back duals on the East Coast, while the rest of the squad turned in a solid performance at the Cougar Clash
LITTLE ROCK – If you could use one word to describe how this weekend went for the Little Rock wrestling team, what would you use? Head Coach Neil Erisman said it best: breakthrough. Despite the squad splitting between the Dragon Duals at Drexel in Pennsylvania and the Cougar Clash tournament in Illinois, the Trojans were busy – yet successful – in both locations.
At the Dragon Duals, Little Rock took out both Drexel and Clarion in back-to-back duals, scoring over thirty team points in both matches. The Trojans bested the host team 30-10 before cleaning up Clarion 37-6. The team won 15 of the 20 bouts on the day, with 12 of those being bonus point victories: wins by major decision, technical fall, or pin. During the second match at the Dragon Duals, Matty Bianchi and Tyler Brennan each added another ranked win to their repertoires, taking out #24 Alejandro Herrera-Rondon handily by 9-1 major decision and #29 John Worthing from Clarion with an 8-4 decision, respectively. Overall, the team tallied 23 takedowns to Drexel’s 6 and 27 takedowns versus Clarion’s 5, proving Little Rock’s offensive efforts throughout the day.
Five Little Rock wrestlers (Nasir Bailey, Matty Bianchi, Tyler Brennan, Stephen Little and Josiah Hill, all nationally ranked) came away with a perfect 2-0 on the day. Little dominated his position, taking home two technical falls, while Brennan and Hill each added a pin for huge bonus points. Bailey got work done for the lower weights, with a technical fall against Drexel and a major decision versus Clarion, while Bianchi claimed a pair of major decisions, not allowing his opponents a single takedown. … story at … LRtrojans.com/Big-weekend-for-little-rock-wrestling-2-0-at-dragon-duals-ranked-wins-at-cougar-clash
