Bond Reaches Final as 7 Mountaineers Medal at Southern Scuffle
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Highlighted by Cody Bond’s run to the 149-pound final, which included a semifinal pin of a top-10 opponent, App State had seven wrestlers reach the podium as top-eight placers at the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear.
Bond advanced to the championship match with a 3-0 start to the event, including an overtime win and a second-period pin of ninth-ranked Jadan Abas from Stanford. Chad Bellis’ quarterfinal win against 15th-ranked Brayden Palmer from Chattanooga served as another highlight.

Gardner-Webb Has Strong Showing in 2024 Southern Scuffle
Anderson wins first place in 184-placement in 2024 Southern Scuffle
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Gardner-Webb University wrestling team took home a first place finish, and had strong showing overall in the 2024 Southern Scuffle (Jan. 1-2). The two-day event was hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs collected 23 individual wins at the event. Redshirt senior Jha’Quan Anderson wen 5-0 to come in first place in the 184-placement. His wins were over Braden Smelser (CSU-Bakersfield), Nick Olivieri (Brown), Jack Darrah (Stanford), Giuseppe Hoose (Oklahoma), and Cameron Pine (Clarion).
Other standouts for the ‘Dawgs included graduate student Zach Price took fifth place in the 149-placement. Hempstead, NY – Noah Tapia picked up the lone Hofstra victory as No. 4 North Carolina State defeated the Pride, 43-5, Sunday at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center. Hofstra moved to 3-3 on the season with the loss and saw its three-match win streak come to an end. All three of the Pride’s losses have come against top-five nationally-ranked opponents. The Wolfpack snapped a two-match losing streak with the victory and improved to 10-2 on the season.
Tapia scored a dominating 20-3 technical fall in 3:59 against Trevor Kantor at 149 pounds. The Pride’s true freshman posted four takedowns and twice scored four back points in the match. Molton takes First at F&M Open, eight Camels place

LANCASTER, Pa. – 125-pound Anthony Molton was perfect on the day, taking first place at the Franklin & Marshall Open Friday. In total, a school record eight Camels placed at the event.
Molton was 5-0, with three bonus-point victories to start out. He recorded two fall victories – against Grant Treaster (Navy) in 4:14, and versus Binghamton’s Carson Wagner in 4:01.
Molton then defeated a pair of NC State wrestlers in the semifinals and final. First, he recorded a 5-4 decision over Vince Robinson with a takedown in the final 30 seconds. He followed that up with another takedown in the last 30 seconds and a victory over Troy Hohman (4-1) to take first place. Molton is the first Campbell wrestler to take first place at the Franklin & Marshall Open.

Virginia Splits Duals With Gardner-Webb, George Mason
RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team (4-1) split a pair of dual matches in Richmond, Va., on Saturday (Jan. 6), taking a 22-19 win over Gardner-Webb (2-3) before dropping a 18-17 dual with George Mason (8-4). The duals were wrestled at St. Christopher’s School.

Gardner-Webb got off to a quick start in the day’s first dual, rattling off four straight wins – including a pin at 133 pounds – as the Runnin’ Bulldogs built a 15-0 lead on the Cavaliers.
Virginia then went to work, winning five of the last six weight classes with four of them producing bonus-points for the Hoos. It started with a major decision from Nick Sanko (157) before Mason Stefanelli (165) and Justin McCoy (174) posted consecutive wins by technical fall that cut the lead to one point at 15-14. NEWBERRY, S.C. – 9th-ranked and visiting UNC Pembroke rattled off six straight wins to put Newberry out of striking distance and help secure a 27-15 win in Conference Carolinas wrestling action Tuesday night inside Eleazer Arena.
The Braves (7-3, 3-1 CC) moved to 7-11 all-time against the Wolves (3-2, 3-1 CC), and have now taken five of the last six duals in the matchup.
UNCP’s Logan Robinson got the Braves on the board at 133 pounds with a 13-7 decision, while Avery Buonocore followed with a pin in the 141 pound bout to give the Black & Gold the lead for good. 7th-ranked 149 pounder Jake Piccirill tasted victory with a dominating 13-1 major decision over 9th-ranked Devan Moore to make it 13-4 Braves. 6th-ranked 157 pounder and reigning Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week, Keegan Roberson, stayed hot with a 15-0 tech. fall win, while Caleb Grau followed it up with a 12-3 major decision in the 165 pound match. 2nd-ranked 174 pounder Scott Joll stayed perfect on the year with a 17-2 tech. fall victory to close out the scoring for the Braves.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore and 6th-ranked 157 pounder Keegan Roberson added to his season’s hot start, picking up Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Roberson posted a 4-1 record at the Citrus Invitational, while claiming a second place finish in the 157 pound bracket. The Chicago native used two first-period pins and two technical falls to make his way to the championship bout. JOHNSTOWN, PA. – The UNC Pembroke wrestling team suffered two defeats to nationally-ranked squads on Saturday at the Pitt-Johnstown hosted Mountain Cat Duals. UNCP’s final dual against Frostburg State was canceled due to inclement weather in the area.
The Braves will hit the mat again Saturday, January 13 as they return home to host Coker, Allen, and Davis & Elkins for a quad meet. Wrestling action will begin at 1 p.m. on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

A Logan Robinson win at 133 pounds, followed by Avery Buonocore’s major decision victory in the 141 pound bout put the Braves ahead 7-4. Caleb Grau recorded a victory at 165 pounds, while second-ranked 174 pounder Scott Joll followed with another win to remain perfect on the year to cut the deficit to 14-13, but the Lakers notched decision victories in the final three bouts to close out the match.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Freshman 141 pounder Avery Buonocore added to his impressive rookie campaign, earning Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. Buonocore posted a perfect 3-0 week, racking up dual match wins over Newberry, Grand Valley State, and Pitt-Johnstown. The Wilmington native tallied a first-period pin against Newberry on Tuesday, then recorded an 11-0 major decision against Grand Valley State in the first dual match of Saturday’s Mountain Cat Duals. Buonocore closed out his perfect week with a thrilling 11-10 decision against Pitt-Johnstown, using a reversal in the final seconds of the third period to take the match. Indiana Takes Third at Southern Scuffle with Two Individual Champs
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –––– Indiana Wrestling concluded competition at the 2024 Southern Scuffle on Tuesday night at McKenzie Arena with a program record 134 points at the event.
The Hoosiers left Chattanooga with ties for program-bests in the tournament of two individual champions and a third-place finish. It was the first time that Indiana reached either of those marks in the Southern Scuffle since 2009. Sixth-year seniors No. 24 Dan Fongaro (141) and No. 22 Graham Rooks (149) each won the bracket at their weight classes. Including those two, Indiana had seven wrestlers finish on the podium. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Three Little Rock wrestlers placed at the Southern Scuffle tournament as the team finished within the top 10 teams for the second year in a row. Joseph Bianchi and Nasir Bailey both took third in their respective brackets, while Josiah Hill also stood on the podium in back-to-back Scuffle appearances.
In addition to the three podium finishers, two Trojans moved on to the second day of the prestigious event: Brendon Abdon and Reid Nelson. The five wrestlers together total a record number of advancements for the program, as Little Rock advanced four and placed three last season.
“A lot of our guys took advantage of their opportunities and wrestled well,” said associate head coach Javier Maldonado. “What I’m most proud of is how they responded to tough situations and tough losses. They responded to adversity the right way, went back to focusing on scoring points, and made good things happen.”

Bison Crown Two Champions, Five Climb Podium at 2024 Southern Scuffle
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Bucknell wrestling team crowned two champions and placed five on the podium on day two of the Southern Scuffle, finishing in sixth place overall with 106.5 points. The Bison were one of just four teams with two title winners. Kurt Phipps went 5-0 to claim the top spot in the 133-pound bracket, and Noah Mulvaney went 5-0 to finish first in the 165-pound bracket.
Dorian Crosby was the third Bison to reach the championship finals on Tuesday and finished runner-up at 285. Mikey Bartush (184) and Logan Deacetis (197) both fell to the consolation bracket on Monday before finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Bucknell’s five placewinners was an improvement from the 2023 Southern Scuffle, where Phipps and Darren Miller were the team’s only wrestlers to reach the podium at fourth and fifth place.
