#12 Chadron State Eagles score 28 straight to down the Cowboys
CHADRON, Neb. — The Chadron State College wrestling team won seven consecutive matches and scored 28 straight points enroute to defeating New Mexico Highlands 34-7, Thursday evening in the Chicoine Center.
After Dominic Joyce, a freshman from North Port, Florida, won an exhibition match with a 20-5 tech fall to start the dual, fans were treated to a nationally ranked matchup at 125 pounds.
#15 Rhys Sellers for the Cowboy’s and CSC’s Quade Smith, who is ranked seventh in the nation, gave fans some third period excitement. While trailing 3-2, Sellers used a late escape to tie the match and later scored a takedown to win 6-3 and give the Cowboys a 3-0 match lead.
The 133-pound weight class is when CSC started the string of seven straight victories. #2 Quentrevion Campbell, a redshirt senior from Tifton, Georgia, defeated his opponent with a 17-4 major decision to improve to 11-1 on the season.
#17 Ethan Leake and Joseph Misitano from New Mexico Highlands were tied at four at the conclusion of the first period and Leake led 5-4 due to a stalling point from his opponent heading to the final period. Leake, a redshirt senior from Clovis, California, chose bottom to begin the third and scored the final point with an escape to win 7-4.
The only tech fall that counted towards team points was scored by Torry Early at 149 pounds. Early, a senior from Oak Park, Illinois, won 15-0 in 1:45 to add to his team record for tech falls in a season.
