Hofstra Wins Three Championships, Place Eight At New York State Championships
Garden City, NY – Hofstra wrestlers placed in eight weight classes with three winning championships at the 2024 New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Nassau Community College Saturday. Two of the eight place-winners – Greyson Harris and Adrian Sans – wrestled attached, while the other six – Frank Volpe, Danny Church, Cam Ice, Dylan Zenion, Joe Russo, and Gavin Proffitt – competed unattached. 
All three champions – Harris, Volpe, and Church – wrestled in the freshman/sophomore division, Russo was the only placewinner to compete in the open division as he finished fifth at 165 pounds.  Harris won three consecutive matches by tech fall before a narrow 8-7 decision over Ithaca’s Brian Bienus in the 165 pound final. Harris led 6-2 going into the third period before Bienus scored a four-point near fall to tie the score. Harris got a reversal with 22 seconds to go to take the lead with Bienus earning a point on a stalling call in the final seconds to account for the final. 
Volpe cruised to the finals at 157 pounds with wins by fall, major decision, and decision. In the championship match he trailed Niagara County Community College’s Kace Cook 4-2 in the third period before scoring a takedown with 29 seconds remaining to get the 5-4 victory.  Church had a bye in his round of 16 match at 285 pounds and then picked up a 36 second fall in the quarterfinals. Lowerweights Ignite Bounceback Win over No. 13 Rutgers

No. 11 Michigan claimed seven bouts, including five ranked wins and two with bonus points, to beat No. 13 Rutgers 23-10 at Crisler Center.
» Michael DeAugustino (125 pounds), Dylan Ragusin (133) and Sergio Lemley (141) opened the dual with three straight ranked wins at the lowerweights; Lemley rallied to upset 11th-ranked Mitch Moore 10-7 in overtime.
» Ragusin and Lucas Davison (Hwt) both earned top-10 wins; Ragusin defeated eighth-ranked Dylan Shawver 8-5 while Davison beat seventh-ranked Yaraslau Slavikouski 4-0 in the final bout.

Binghamton Wrestling Upsets No. 18 Navy
Victory is first for the Bearcats against a top 20 opponent since joining Division I
VESTAL, N.Y. –  In a thrilling comeback, the Binghamton wrestling team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final three matches to upset No. 18 Navy 18-17 Sunday at the Events Center. The victory was followed by a 22-11 loss to Army to close out the doubleheader.  
This is the first time since the university joined Division I in 2001 that the Bearcats have defeated an opponent ranked in the top 20. It is also the first time the Bearcats defeated a top 25 opponent since Feb. 20, 2015, when Binghamton upset No. 22 Bucknell 18-16. Ultimately, it marks the fifth time Binghamton has defeated a ranked opponent since joining Division I, and the first under Head Coach Kyle Borshoff.  
Trailing 17-7, the Bearcats began their comeback when Jacob Nolan defeated David Key 8-3 to bring it to 17-10. Lou DePrez followed that with the first of his two technical falls on the day when he beat Daniel Williams 20-4. With the score at 17-15, that set up a winner-take-all showdown between Cory Day and No. 17 Grady Griess. Long Island University Wrestling Earns Win vs. Morgan State in Pennsylvania

CLARION, Pa. — The LIU wrestling team defeated Morgan State on Sunday while also facing Kent State and host Clarion. The Sharks defeated Morgan State, 25-9, to open the event.
Robbie Sagaris produced a technical fall at 125 pounds to kick things off.
Devin Matthews (7-2 at 141 pounds), Drew Witham (12-4 at 149), Rhise Royster (12-6 at 157), Corey Connolly (14-9 at 174), Gavin Claro (11-2 at 184) and John Dusza (2-1 at 197) also produced victories.

Hofstra Rallies Past Franklin And Marshall In EIWA Opener
Lancaster, PA – Keaton Kluever, ranked 22nd at 285 pounds, scored a tech fall victory to put the Pride back on top and a forfeit win sealed the deal as Hofstra opened Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association action with a 21-16 victory over Franklin and Marshall Sunday. The teams split the 10 matches as Hofstra (6-3, 1-0 EIWA) won its third consecutive dual match. 
After losing a 5-2 decision at 141 pounds to open the match, the Pride ran off three consecutive victories to take a 10-3 lead. Noah Tapia continued his winning ways with a 14-5 major decision over Josh Hillard at 149 pounds. Jurius Clark followed with a 7-4 win over Dominic Wheatley at 157, snapping a 4-4 tie with a third period takedown. Jake Slotnick closed the run with a 5-2 decision over Josh Palmucci at 165. 
The Diplomats (3-2, 0-1 EIWA) made it a 10-6 match at 174 pounds as Noah Fox took a 5-4 decision over Ross McFarland. 18th-ranked James Conway followed with an 8-1 win over the Pride’s Will Conlon at 184 pounds to bring the Diplomats within one, 10-9. Army Wrestling Picks Up Road Win At Binghamton, Moves to 3-0 in EIWA
VISTAL, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team picked up a big road victory against Binghamton on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Bearcats 22-11 to move to 3-0 in EIWA play.  
The Black Knights raced out to a 16-0 lead right away. No. 32 Ethan Berginc kicked off the match with an 8-2 win over Carson Wagner in the 125 division. In the 133 division, Braden Basile then took a 8-4 win over Micah Roes.  Logan Brown earned an 8-4 victory over Ivan Garcia in the 141 fight. Matt Williams proceeded to get an 11-7 victory in the 149 division to put Army up 12-0. Nate Lukez took an 11-3 victory to push the Black Knight advantage to 16-0.

JWU Providence Wildcats win New England Wrestling Association Duals
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) wrestling team ran the table at the 2024 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals on Sunday afternoon at the Wildcat Center, defeating Bridgewater St. (55-7), Trinity (CT) (57-0), Springfield (41-4), and Coast Guard (16-15) to take home the championship.  
Junior Joziah Fry secured wins over No. 2 ranked Chase Randall (Coast Guard), No. 3 Gianni Manginelli (Springfield), and No. 7 Malcolm Chrispin (Bridgewater St.) at 133 lbs.  
Classmate Gabriel Leo-Esparolini (141 lbs.) picked up wins over No. 6 ranked Ryan Kozdra (Springfield) and No. 7 Owen Woolcott (Coast Guard. Freshman Jack Richardson entered the event No. 4 in the region and upended No. 3 ranked Noah Caskey (Coast Guard) in the finals at 157 lbs.

Pac-12 Weekly Recap (1/16/2024)
Cal Poly goes 3-0 at home
Cal Poly won three straight home duals over the weekend. The Mustangs defeated American 39-3, Northern Colorado 23-15, and Air Force 23-17. 
Three Mustangs went undefeated during the weekend, Chance and Daschle Lamer, and Zeth Romney. Chance earned bonus-point victories, winning 22-4, 22-7, and 17-9. Daschle picked up a first-period pin and two decisions. Romney dominated with a 24-second pin, a 17-1 tech fall and 4-1 in sudden victory. In addition, Legend Lamer capped off a 2-1 weekend with a tech fall, making it the first time the three Lamer brothers wrestled together and marked an 8-1 record. Lastly, Jarad Priest captured the clinching win against Air Force with a 6-3 decision at 197 pounds against Calvin Sund. 

CSU Bakersfield remains winless
The Roadrunners had three duals over the weekend. However, Bakersfield lost to American 36-8, Campbell 39-3, and Central Michigan 40-3. Guillermo Escobedo won the only match against Campbell, defeating Brant Cracraft 4-2 at 165 pounds.
Augustine Garcia had a ranked win against Central Michigan, defeating Alex Cramer 8-2 at 174 pounds. Escobedo defeated Ryan Zimmerman 10-1 and Devyn Flores-Che defeated Kaden Milheim, 10-2 in the American dual.

Little Rock dominates in 4 duals

Gratitude Key for Erisman in Little Rock’s Growth
Little Rock has become anything but a little program during the 2023-24 season. Although Little Rock’s program is still taking baby steps, the program has been setting records each week. “There is a big gratitude for all the guys for believing in what we are doing and they have bought in so many different ways,” coach Neil Erisman said. “We always believed we could be this type of team and it’s fun to see it come together.” Little Rock’s achievements have come in various ways, including nine dual wins and counting, being ranked top 25 for the first time, finishing top 10 at multiple tournaments, and more. The Trojans have been able to create these records while competing in its fifth season. “It starts with the quality and character of the kids we are recruiting,” Erisman said. “We get the right guys who love what we talk about, what we believe in, and jump wholeheartedly into it.”
Even though Little Rock continues to rise, it was not always smooth sailing for the Trojans. First, Erisman and the squad had to celebrate the small victories.  “It started with celebrating that we didn’t get tech falled in a match,” Erisman said. “Through that, it gave the guys a real sense of gratefulness.” In addition, Erisman and his staff had to make sure to keep confidence flowing high despite tough times. Lastly, Erisman stated the toughest thing about building Little Rock is having no mentors for the wrestlers. “In the end, the culture of your team is who they are when the coaches are not around,” Erisman said. “When you have a group of young kids coming in and buying into a dream, they don’t know it and haven’t been through it. Ming Delivers for Cardinal
PHILADELPHIA – With the dual on the line, Peter Ming secured a fall to propel No. 20 Stanford to a 20-16 win over Penn, Sunday, at The Palestra. Stanford improves to 6-2 on the season, while Penn drops to 1-4. The Cardinal and Quakers each won five bouts, three coming by bonus points for Stanford. Trailing 16-14 in the team score, the dual came down to Ming and Penn heavyweight John Stout. The senior registered his team-leading fourth fall of the season, putting Stout on his back in the second for the walk-off win.
Senior 197-pounder Nick Stemmet, ranked 17th nationally, recorded a 12-4 major decision over Martin Cosgrove to put the Cardinal in position to win the dual. Stemmet moves to 20-5 overall and 6-2 in duals. Penn jumped out to a 10-0 lead, picking up wins in the first three matches. Redshirt senior 149-pounder Jaden Abas scored the first team points for the Cardinal with a 5-1 decision over Andy Troczynski. Arizona State Sun Devils Pick Up Big Road Win in Nailbiter Against Panthers
PITTSBURGH – The Sun Devils picked up a big, much-needed road win against No. 29 Pittsburgh on Sunday at the Fitzgerald Field House, 21-20, courtesy of a bonus-point win from Jacori Teemer.
Trailing 20-14 heading into the heavyweight bout, No. 5 Cohlton Schultz was nearing a win against No. 12 Dayton Pitzer. In the third, however, Pitzer went down with a shoulder injury and defaulted, tying the match at 20 apiece. The Sun Devils then notched the deciding point on criteria. It was a fast and emphatic start for the Sun Devils, who grabbed four of the first six bouts of the afternoon. Jacori Teemer’s tech fall victory against Jared Keslar, 6:33 into his match, was a massive boost for the Sun Devils.

PHILADELPHIA – In its final nonconference dual, No. 20 Stanford won nine of 10 bouts to defeat Drexel, 34-6, on Sunday in Philadelphia. The Cardinal improves to 7-2 on the season, while the Dragons drop to 2-7 overall. Five of Stanford’s nine wins came by bonus points. 
Stanford jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the dual as No. 12 Nico Provo and Dom LaJoie registered decisions at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Little Rock Wrestling Knocks Off #24 Arizona State, Program’s First Win Over a Ranked Team
Historic win marks a turning point in Little Rock’s young journey as a team
LITTLE ROCK – The Little Rock wrestling team has just knocked off its first ranked opponent in program history, and what better way to do it than in front of over 1,000 fans at home for their conference opener against Arizona State. After notching historic moment after historic moment over the last year – over the last five years since the Trojans first stepped onto the mat for the first time, really – Little Rock has now proved itself one of the top teams in the country.
“What was not to celebrate?” asked head coach Neil Erisman following the match. “It was our first big-time win for our program. How about Arkansas wrestling – doing things that weren’t imaginable even 10 years ago, and now we’ve got wrestling at every level. What a night.”
The night certainly ended on a high note, yet Arizona State started off with the upper hand, taking four of the first five bouts. Although Nasir Bailey claimed his match by decision over a ranked Sun Devil, the visitors had 13 team points to Little Rock’s 3. The tide turned after the teams returned from intermission and Joseph Bianchi stepped up for his bout at 165 pounds. Despite trailing 6-1 going into the final two minutes, the older of the two Bianchis on the roster went into work mode, pushing the match to sudden victory overtime and collecting the final takedown to win 11-8.
The Trojans took the next two: Tyler Brennan by decision and Triston Wills by major decision to tie the dual 13-13. That string of victories was even more notable since the three – Bianchi, Brennan, and Wills – are all redshirt seniors set to be honored on Senior Day in two weeks. ”It was the guys that have been here from the beginning that got the ball rolling,” said Coach Erisman. “It was a great moment, looking at Joey and Tyler and Triston and going, I remember when that went the other way. I’m so thankful for those guys and that they stayed the course.”

ASU Wrestling Upping Commitment Level After ‘Frustrating’ Loss To ISU
Arizona State wrestling coach Zeke Jones said the Sun Devils have had “a great two-week cycle” after a 28-10 loss to Iowa State
It was after a 28-10 loss to #5 Iowa State on Jan. 5 that Arizona State coach Zeke Jones let his Sun Devil squad know that he wasn’t satisfied with their fight or their toughness.
ASU lost eight of 10 bouts, two by technical fall and six others by six, four, four, five, seven and one point. The Sun Devils bounced back two days later with a 43-0 shutout at Cal Bakersfield to improve their midseason record to 2-3, but Jones made sure the tone was set and the message was heard. “Yeah, it was frustrating … just not finishing out the matches for a variety of reasons,” he said. “But it’s been a great two-week cycle. That’s part of the learning processes. When you get 10 to 15 matches under your belt in the season, you know exactly what you need to work on. And then those that go back and work on it improve the fastest — that’s part of this phase right now is correcting those mistakes and the team really has responded.” One of the losses was fifth-ranked All-America Jacori Teemer falling 9-5 to #11 Cody Chittum. Big 12 Weekly Recap (1/17/2024)
Air Force (Overall: 2-4; Conference: 0-2): Dual Results (WYO) | Dual Results (CP)
The Falcons hosted two duals but dropped both to Wyoming and Cal Poly. Giano Petrucelli, Sam Wolf, and Wyatt Hendrickson went 2-0 on the weekend, with Petrucelli and Hendrickson getting bonus points in each. Hendrickson scored two falls to get his season total up to 11; over the weekend he spent just 1:18 on the mat to get his wins. 
Next Up: Air Force competes against SDSU and NDSU on the road on January 26th and 28th. 

California Baptist (Overall: 3-6; Conference: 0-3): Dual Results
California Baptist dropped a 20-12 dual against conference opponent Northern Colorado over the weekend, but got a big upset. Eli Griffin kicked off the dual with a 7-4 upset over Big 12 champ Stevo Poulin despite a third-period injury that slowed him down. Dayne Morton, Carter Schubert, and Nathan Haas also won decisions. After a slow start to the year, Griffin is back to looking like a contender in a chaotic weight class. 
Next Up: California Baptist heads north to compete against Big 12 foes NDSU and SDSU on January 20th and 21st respectively. 

Iowa State (Overall: 9-1; Conference: 2-0): Dual Results
The Cyclones had a dual against Pitt canceled due to the snowstorm, but still got a conference win over the visiting Wolverines. They beat Utah Valley 44-3 including seven bonus wins and a forfeit at heavyweight. Zach Redding continues to man the 149 spot and scored a late takedown to beat Isaiah Delgado. Julien Broderson lost to one of two ranked Utah Valley wrestlers, dropping a 6-1 decision to Evan Bockman. 
Next Up: Iowa State duals Oklahoma on January 26th and Oklahoma State on January 27th. 

Missouri (Overall: 7-0; Conference: 3-0): Dual Results
The Tigers briefly escaped the cold, heading west for a dual against a young but tough Stanford team. They dominated with a 39-0 win and six bonus point wins. Noah Surtin hit a big move late to major Nico Provo 12-3. Logan Gioffre got his biggest win of the year with an 8-1 decision over Jaden Abas. Gioffre is now 5-4 on the year with all of his losses coming to top eight wrestlers. Brock Mauller got back in the win column over Daniel Cardenas, winning the takedown battle 4-1. Peyton Mocco returned to the lineup with a 21-8 major over Ty Monteiro. SOUTH DAKOTA STATE WRESTLING TEAM CRACKS TOP 10 FOR FIRST TIME
The South Dakota State wrestling team reached another milestone Tuesday by achieving its first top-10 ranking in a Division I team poll.  
The Jackrabbits, 6-2 in duals this season, checked in at No. 10 in the latest rankings conducted by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. SDSU moved up one spot in this week’s poll after victories over Kent State (50-0) and Navy (30-13) Jan. 12 at the Virginia Duals.  
For the third consecutive week, all 10 Jackrabbit starters are ranked individually in their respective weight classes. South Dakota State spotted Northern Colorado an early lead, but the 10^th-ranked Jackrabbits stormed back with five victories by technical fall and another by major decision to come out on top, 29-16, in their Big 12 Conference dual opener Friday night at Frost Arena.  
SDSU ran its winning streak to four matches in improving to 7-2 overall. Northern Colorado dropped to 8-3 in duals this season, including a 1-2 mark against Big 12 opponents.
The Bears got out of the gates quickly, building a 7-0 advantage by winning a pair of matchups between ranked wrestlers. At 125 pounds, No. 16 Stevo Poulin registered a 14-6 major decision over 17^th-ranked Tanner Jordan. Poulin, the defending Big 12 champion, raced out to a 7-2 first-period lead with a pair of takedowns and added a takedown in each of the next two periods to seal the victory.
The 133-pound matchup between No. 16 Derrick Cardinal and UNC’s Dominick Serrano was a defensive battle through the first two periods. After a scoreless opening stanza, the 26^th-ranked Serrano cracked the scoring column first with a reversal in the second period, then came up with the decisive takedown and added a point for a minute-plus advantage in riding time to come away with a 6-2 decision.
Returning All-American Clay Carlson put the Jackrabbits on the right path with a major decision of his own, posting a 14-3 victory over Armando Garcia. Carlson led 9-2 through one period after recording a three-point near-fall after his first takedown and tallying a second takedown later in the frame.

Wyoming Wrestling Controls Dual En Route to 22-12 Victory Over Wolverines
OREM, Utah (1/20/24) –Sloan Swan hasn’t wrestled a whole bunch this season for the University of Wyoming. The 157-pound freshman has competed in a couple tournaments and a couple duals but hasn’t been a consistent fixture in the lineup. Swan made another start Saturday at Utah Valley. And his impressive come-from-behind performance solidified a strong start and catapulted a strong finish for the Cowboys. Wyoming ended up topping the Wolverines, 22-12, inside Lockhart Arena. The victory improves the Pokes to 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in Big 12 action, while the loss drops Utah Valley to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play. “Sloan was down 5-0 going into the third period and then scored 17 points,” head coach Mark Branch said. “That’s inspiration, and that really lifted the team up. Those things play a factor in a dual setting.”
Swan logged a 17-7 major decision over Alex Emmer after, as Branch said, he was down 5-0 with just two minutes of the match remaining. The sizable rally improved Swan to 9-4 on the year. Swan’s victory cemented a strong start for Wyoming, which won four of the first five matches. NDSU Wrestling Picks Up Big 12 Win Over Cal Baptist
FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State wrestling team came from behind to defeat California Baptist 25-15 in Big 12 action Saturday night at the Scheels Center. Cal Baptist (3-7, 0-4 Big 12) scored the first two victories of the night with a pair of pins to take a 12-0 lead after 125 and 133 pounds. However, the Bison (2-6, 1-1 Big 12) reeled off five-straight wins and took seven of the final eight matches to claim their first Big 12 win of the season. 
In the 141-pound match, #29 Gavin Drexler scored a four-point near fall and a three-point nearfall in the third period to come from behind and defeat Darren Green with a 9-6 decision. Then in the 149-pound match, Max Petersen scored the only takedown of the match in sudden victory to defeat Dayne Morton 4-1. Landen Johnson would then close the first half with a 9-4 win over Chaz Hallmark in the 157-pound match. Johnson had a takedown and four-point nearfall in the first period and then added a reversal in the win. Coming out of the break, Brendan Howes then defeated Drayden Morton with a four-point nearfall in the final seconds to win 4-0 at 165 pounds.
In the 174-pound match, Gaven Sax battled through a first period injury to score the first bonus-point decision of the night for the Bison, winning 8-0 over Justin Phillips. Sax had a reversal and a takedown and secured the riding time point in the second period.
Following a loss at 184 pounds that brought the Lancers to within one of the Bison at 16-15, Spencer Mooberry extended the lead in the 197-pound match and Devon Dawson secured the victory at heavyweight. Mooberry nearly had a fall as he cruised to a 13-7 win over Eli Sheeren. Bison Wrestling Tops Northern Colorado 27-14
FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State wrestling picked up a second-consecutive Big 12 win, defeating Northern Colorado 27-14 Sunday afternoon in Big 12 action at the Scheels Center.  
Northern Colorado (8-4, 1-3 Big 12) opened up an 8-0 lead after the first two matches, recording a tech fall at 125 pounds and a decision at 133 pounds. However, the Bison (3-6, 2-1 Big 12) reeled off four-straight bonus point wins and six of the final eight matches overall to claim their second-straight victory and third win overall in the last four minutes.  
In the 141-pound match, #29 Gavin Drexler started the winning run for NDSU with a major decision over Armando Garcia. Drexler recorded three takedowns in the first period, and added a fourth later in the match to win 14-3 with an escape point and riding time.  
Max Petersen and Landen Johnson then scored three takedowns each in major decision wins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Petersen had two in the first period and one in the second as he won 11-2 over Kilian Schultz. Johnson had a takedown in each period, along with a three-point near fall in the second as he won 15-4 over Roman Cruz to give NDSU a 12-8 lead headed into the break.  
Coming out of the intermission, Brendan Howes picked up a takedown and then his fourth pin of the season at the 1:37 mark of the first period on Derek Matthews, giving the Bison a 10-point lead.  
Following a decision loss at 174 pounds, the Bison answered right back with a win by Adam Cherne at 184 pounds. After giving up an early takedown, Cherne scored one of his own for a 4-3 lead after one. JACKRABBITS COMPLETE HOME SWEEP
South Dakota State wrapped up a successful opening weekend of Big 12 Conference wrestling duals with a flourish in defeating California Baptist, 39-3, Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena.  
The 10^th-ranked Jackrabbits improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference duals in running their winning streak to five.  
Leading 17-3 through six matches, the Jackrabbits closed the dual with four consecutive bonus-point victories. Fourth-ranked Cade DeVos started the streak with a 23-4 technical fall over Justin Phillips in the 174-pound matchup. DeVos registered two takedowns in each of the three periods before ending the match with a four-point near-fall at the 6:09 mark.
At 184 pounds, redshirt freshman Bennett Berge needed only 46 seconds to pin the Lancers’ Nathan Haas for the first fall of the dual.
Tanner Sloan followed with a 17-1 technical fall against Eli Sheeran in the 197-pound bout. The victory by the fifth-ranked Sloan was his fifth in a row by tech fall.
