Division II NCAA Results and News – Jan 31st

Glenville State PIONEER WRESTLING MEC CHAMPIONS!!!
West Liberty, W.Va. – The Glenville State Wrestling team has been crowned the 2024 Mountain East Conference Champions! The Pioneers dethroned West Liberty, who won the previous three MEC Championships, totaling 153.5 points while the Hilltoppers were runners up with 136.0 points. In total, five GSU Wrestlers took home individual championships in their weight classes. 
Following the preliminary matches, Glenville State had nine of their 10 wrestlers in line to square off for a championship. Gavin Shamblin didn’t wrestle for a championship but still took 3rd place in the heavyweight (285) division. Hunter Ross kicked off the championship matches with an 11-2 victory over West Liberty’s Alexander Crane in the 125-pound class. Following Ross, defending national champion Gavin Quiocho secured a MEC title in the 133-pound division with an 8-3 win. Sean Johnson took 2nd place in the 141-pound championship match and Ethan Hardy also took 2nd in the 149-pound class. 
In the 157-pound division, Gaetano DeLeonardis was crowned champion after beating Notre Dame College’s Matthew Kaufmann 19-4. Brady Ross had the most exciting match of the day, going to overtime … This is Glenville State’s first MEC Championship in Wrestling since the program was created during the 2020-21 season. Chadron State Eagles break 29 year streak
The Chadron State men’s wrestling team defeated Western Colorado in Gunnison, Colorado for the first time in 29 years Saturday night, winning 22-15.  The Eagles started the dual with three straight victories, followed by five Western Colorado victories. Chadron State responded by winning the final two matches of the dual.  At 125 pounds, Quade Smith put CSC up 6-0 early with a pin in 2:20. 
After a forfeit at 133 pounds by the Mountaineers, an Ethan Leake 13-4 major decision at 141 pounds gave CSC a 16-0 lead.  The Mountaineers answered by winning the following five matches. No. 15 Peacocks Dominate Drury in Mike Olson Alumni Dual
Upper Iowa men’s wrestling claimed their second win of the weekend as they defeated Drury at home 44-7. The Peacocks improved to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in the GLVC with today’s victory.  Upper Iowa compiled eight wins this afternoon behind two falls, four tech falls, and two forfeits (one being injury forfeit). The home team executed 33 takedowns and three escapes, while the Panthers recorded five takedowns, one reversal and 28 escapes. 
The dual was highlighted by pins from No. 5 Tate Murty (141) and Jordan Baumler (285). Murty executed the fall in 1:34 over Paul Pollard and Baumler executed his pin in 1:51 over Jaxon Glenn.  Action opened at the 125 weight class with Treyton Ackman, as he was defeated by Caden Howard by major decision (15-1). Drury left 133 open, as James Davis picked up the forfeit win to the Peacocks up 6-4.
Upper Iowa gathered momentum and rattled off wins in the next four bouts, starting with Murty’s pin. He had already tallied 12 points in the match prior to his win by fall.  Jackson Rolfs (149) competed in the fourth bout of the day and won by injury default.

Colorado Mesa Mavericks Cant Overcome Slow Start in Loss to Eagles
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling fell in seven of the ten contested bouts in a 25-15 loss to the visiting No. 15 Chadron State Eagles on Sunday (Jan. 28) afternoon.  
The Mavericks dropped the first seven bouts of the afternoon before winning the final three matches which all came for bonus points.  
No. 7 Jason Bynarowicz got a gigantic win at 184 pounds as he pinned Eagle Keegan Gelhausen at the 2:46 mark of the first period. Gelhausen defeated Bynarowicz in last season’s NCAA Regional Tournament which propelled him in the National Tournament. Gabe Carranza backed that up with a 9-0 major decision victory over Dominic Joyce at 197 pounds. No. 5 St. Cloud State Wrestling Tears Through No. 25 SMSU, 44-3
Huskies win nine matches and eight by bonus points to improve to 11-1 on season
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 5 St. Cloud State Wrestling (11-1, 6-0 NSIC) won its fifth consecutive dual and remained perfect in conference action with a 44-3 dismantling of No. 25 Southwest Minnesota State (3-5, 1-5 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall. The Huskies won nine of 10 matches and earned bonus points in eight victories to move to 6-0 in NSIC duals.
The win was the 17^th consecutive victory for the Huskies over the Mustangs dating back to Jan. 23, 2007, the first season under head coach Steve Costanzo.
It didn’t take long for SCSU to make a statement against SMSU, as redshirt sophomore Conor Knopick (Omaha, Neb.) wasted no time earning a takedown and back points before recording a fall at 1:21 over Carlo Arreola. After the Huskies earned another six points due to an injury default at 133 pounds, redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Alyeus Craig (Wichita, Kan.) earned a 12-3 major decision victory over Jake Messner to improve to 11-3 on the season.
At 149 pounds, redshirt junior Nolan Throne (Moline, Ill.) won 4-3 over Luke Peterson, leading way to back-to-back technical falls from 157-pounder Nick Novak (New Prague, Minn.) and graduate 165-pounder Anthony Herrera (Stansbury Park, Utah). CSC wrestlers win 25-15 over Mesa Mavericks
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Chadron State College wrestling team won the first seven matches while defeating the Colorado Mesa Mavericks 25-15 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual in Grand Junction on Sunday afternoon.          
Coach Brett Hunter‘s team now has a 7-1 dual record and is 5-0 against RMAC rivals.  Mesa is now 5-3 and 3-3. Mesa won last year’s dual in Chadron 28-16. The Eagles defeated the Mavericks for the first time in five years. 
The Eagles’ first five contestants—Quade Smith at 125 pounds, Quen Campbell at 133, Ethan Leake at 141, Torry Early at 149 and Clayton Robinson at 157—all earned three points by decisions, good for 15 total points.        
After that, Chadron State’s Jaziah Whaley posted a 14-4 major decision at 165 pounds and Logan Berger pinned his 174-pound opponent in 4:53, netting 10 more points for the Eagles.              
Mesa won the final three weight classes and earned bonus points in each of them.
