Ferrum Wrestling Team Grabs ODAC Win Feb. 2 at SVU
BUENA VISTA, Virginia — Ferrum College earned an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) wrestling win Friday, February 2, on the road over Southern Virginia University, winning 42-9 at SVU’s Knight Arena. RECORDS

THE BASICS
Qwantez Watkins started things off for the Panthers with an 18-3 tech fall over Quinn Richards at 125 pounds. Walker Bell managed the same thing with a 23-6 tech fall over John Carlson at 133 pounds. Jon Ward kept it going at 141 pounds with a 12-9 decision over Weston Hirschi. Southern Virginia’s Elijah Blackwell got the Knights on the scoreboard with a pin over Ferrum’s Joseph Olalde at 149 pounds. Tyler Ramirez answered right back, pinning Porter Kinne at 157 pounds to make it a 19-6 Ferrum lead. Mateo Villalobos kept it rolling with a pin over Calvin Fillmore at 165 pounds to increase the lead to 25-6. BEREA, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men’s wrestling team won the 37th John Summa Invitational inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse. BW, who honored its 10 senior student-athletes prior to championship matches, was the champion of 13 teams with 187 points. Wilkes (Pa.) College was second with 147 points.
The Yellow Jackets, who claimed the team title for the second time in the past three years and third time overall, had 18 top-8 finishers, including five champions and three runner-up’s. Southern Maine Extends Win Streak to Eight, Defeats Plymouth State (35-21), Western New England (22-19) and Trinity (29-18)
HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore Jake Craig (Skowhegan, Maine) and junior Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each had a pair of dominant wins by technical fall to highlight a 3-0 day for the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the Trinity College Quad Meet at Memorial Fieldhouse.
Southern Maine earned wins over Plymouth State 35-21, Trinity College 29-18, and had a dramatic 22-19 win against Western New England. With the three dual meet victories, Southern Maine has won eight in a row and improves to 12-6 in dual meet action.

*Roanoke’s Mac Cafurello started the dual off with an 8-2 decision over Akhil Vega of Stevens at 125 and Jude Robson put the Maroons up 9-0 with a pin in 4:05 at 133. The Ducks scored decision victories in the next two weight classes to cut the lead to 9-6.
*Andrew McDougal had a decision win at 157 for Roanoke as did David Reid at 165 to give the Maroons a 14-6 edge (after one point was deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct) but Stevens won decisions at 174 and 184. Vermont-Castleton Wrestling’s Historic Season Continues With Wins Over #7 JWU, #24 Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The ninth-ranked Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team continued to build on its historic season Saturday, earning the program’s first-ever victory over perennial powerhouse #7 Johnson & Wales and shutting out #24 Springfield, 47-0.
The Spartans were ready to go from the opening whistle, winning five of the first six bouts against JWU before taking all 10 bouts against Springfield in the second match of the day. Six different Spartans went 2-0 in the dual matches, with a trio of Spartans picking up wins over nationally-ranked opponents in the JWU dual.
The victories improve VTSU Castleton’s record this season to 18-3, tying a program record for wins in a season with two more duals remaining on the schedule. JWU is now 23-5 on the season and Springfield sits at 12-7 on the year. GREENSBORO, N.C.— Averett University men’s wrestling dominated Greensboro College 48-5 on Thursday night. As a team, Averett (20-6, 4-1 ODAC) recorded just one loss against Greensboro (1-8, 1-3 ODAC). The Cougars compiled three pins, two technical falls and two major decisions in their dominant performance. At 174 pounds, sophomore Michael Gabbard scored Averett’s first points when he got a 19-9 major decision against Luke Gregory. Sophomore Nolan Gerwitz pinned Julian Rodriguez in just under a minute in the 184-pound weight class. At 197 pounds, senior Jamar Christian got the 14-4 major decision against Khalil Belk. The Short story: The Roanoke College wrestling team scored a decisive 38-9 victory Thursday night over visiting Ferrum College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match on Senior Night. The program’s five seniors were honored in a pre-match ceremony.
With tonight’s victory, the Maroons secured at least a three-way tie for the ODAC team title and can stand alone as the conference champion with a win at Averett University on Feb. 8.

* The dual started at 141 pounds, and Roanoke’s Mark Samuel recorded a pin, followed by Jarrod Pominville at 149 with another pin.
