Iowa tops Oklahoma State in Finale 22-9

Cowboys Drop Regular Season Finale to Iowa
STILLWATER – The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team fell to No. 4 Iowa, 22-9, on Sunday in the team’s final dual of the regular season. OSU completed the regular season with a 14-1 record in dual action, while Iowa improved to 12-2.
Gallagher-Iba Arena played host to 13,721 fans, the arena’s third-highest total ever at a wrestling dual. Additionally, Sunday’s crowd secured a season attendance average of 5,871, most in Gallagher-Iba Arena wrestling history.
In the opening bout of the afternoon, No. 12 Troy Spratley and No. 4 Drake Ayala went into sudden victory tied at 1-1, but Ayala secured a takedown and near fall points to give Iowa the early lead. At 133 pounds, third-ranked Daton Fix defeated Brody Teske by decision, 7-2, in his final match inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. With the win, Fix completed his career with a perfect 36-0 record at the venue. “I just wanted to take it in one last time,” Fix said. “I grew up dreaming of putting on that orange singlet and wrestling in Gallagher. When I was a little kid, I spent a lot of a lot of time here, so it’s a dream come true for me just to be able to represent Oklahoma State. I love Oklahoma State with everything in me, I’m a Cowboy forever and I definitely bleed orange.”
Following No. 2 Real Woods’ tight 4-1 win over No. 8 Tagen Jamison, 18th-ranked Jordan Williams once again evened the team score after beating Victor Voinovich III, 7-3. Williams improved to 13-6 on the year and enters the postseason having won three of his last four bouts.
With the scored tied 6-6, the Hawkeyes picked up decisions in top-10 matchups at both 157 and 165 pounds. Seventh-ranked Patrick Kennedy then gave Iowa a 16-6 lead at 174 pounds, defeating No. 21 Brayden Thompson, 12-3, in the only bonus-point decision of the day.

HAWKEYES WRANGLE COWBOYS, 22-9
STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The fourth-ranked University of Iowa men’s wrestling team defeated No. 2 Oklahoma State, 22-9, on Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena. This was the Cowboys’ first loss of the season. The Hawkeyes won seven of 10 bouts and picked up bonus points at 174. Iowa outscored Oklahoma State 62-32 in match points and recorded 11 takedowns to Oklahoma State’s five. “I feel like that was a good step,” said head coach Tom Brands. “That was an undefeated team here in Stillwater. The environment and all that we handled it. We have to keep getting better.”
Fourth-ranked Drake Ayala got things started for the Hawkeyes at 125 when after a 1-1 bout went to sudden victory, he locked up a cradle with :48 seconds remaining to secure the takedown and back points to win 8-1 over No. 12 Troy Spratley. Oklahoma State got on the board at 133 when No. 3 Daton Fix won a, 7-2, decision over Brody Teske.
The teams traded wins at 141 and 149 with second-ranked Real Woods defeating Tagen Jamison, 5-1, and No. 18 Jordan Williams defeating former Cowboy Victor Voinovich III, 7-3. Fifth-ranked Jared Franek sent the Hawkeyes to the break with a 10-4 lead. He defeated No. 10 Teague Travis, 10-4. At 165 seventh-ranked Michael Caliendo picked up a big win over No. 3 Izzak Olejnik winning, 7-2.
