Wyoming wrestler who saved teammate during grizzly bear attack gets national honor
POWELL – Kendell Cummings, the Wyoming wrestler who rescued his college teammate during a grizzly bear attack, was recently recognized with a national award.
The award, called the Carnegie Hero Fund, is considered to be the highest civilian honor for heroism on the continent, according to the group’s website. It recognizes those who risk their own lives in an attempt to save another.
Cummings was one of 17 selected for the award. He will receive a medal as well as a sizable financial grant at a banquet later this year. “I thought it was pretty crazy when I was even being considered,” Cummings said in an online interview Monday afternoon. “I didn’t even know what to say.”
The award would never have been given had it not been for the attack on Oct. 15, 2022. That was the day Cummings and his friends surprised the bear, and he said it’s a day he’ll never forget. “It was like unreal almost,” Cummings said. “It was so crazy. You just never expect that to happen.”
Cummings recounted the incident Monday, which began when he and three other teammates were shed hunting in the Shoshone National Forest. Cummings and one teammate, Brady Lowry, were split up from the group when suddenly a grizzly bear came out of the forest lunging at Lowry.
Without a second thought, Cummings jumped into action to try and save his friend. “I jumped down there and grabbed the bear,” Cummings said. “I pulled it off of Brady and then the bear started attacking me. There wasn’t a whole lot of thought or anything. It just kind of happened.”
Both Cummings and Lowry suffered serious injuries, but miraculously both men have since recovered, even managing to make it back on the wrestling mat in just six months. “It was awesome, and I’m super grateful,” Cummings said. “It’s been awesome watching Brady do what he did.”
Lowry ended up earning All-American status, which means he was one of the top eight wrestlers in his weight class at the national tournament. Cummings was able to compete again for Northwest College in Powell this year. While he didn’t qualify for the national tournament, he said his recent accolade along with Lowry’s success makes the whole ordeal worth it. “It feels good to know that people recognize that it was a good thing,” Cummings said. … story at … KTVQ.com/Wrestler-who-saved-teammate-during-grizzly-bear-attack-gets-national-honor

Penn State wins the 2024 DI men’s NCAA wrestling championship
Just as they have done 10 times before under head coach Cael Sanderson, the Penn State Nittany Lions captured the Division I national title.

This time, though, Penn State made a little extra history in its victory.
The Nittany Lions put eight athletes on the podium including four national champions, two runner-ups and two additional place winners.
FINAL BRACKET | FINAL TEAM SCORES
Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks headlined the success for the Blue and White, winning their fourth NCAA titles to become the sixth and seventh athletes to do so in NCAA wrestling. Starocci’s win came by way of a 2-0 decision against No. 6 Rocco Welsh of Ohio State via an escape point and a stall point, but that was all he needed to finish on top once again. Aaron Brooks followed Starocci’s footsteps, becoming the seventh four-time NCAA champ in history and the second for Penn State with his win over Hidlay 6-1. Heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet added a title at heavyweight, his first, with a 13-4 major decision of Lucas Davison in a match in which he did not give up a single offensive point. He set a tone of total domination.
The Nittany Lions produced another national champ at 157 pounds as No. 1 Levi Haines completed his undefeated season with a strategic 4-0 shutout against No. 2 Jacori Teemer.
Penn State’s No. 2 Beau Bartlett and No. 2 Mitchell Mesenbrink finished as runner-ups, as No. 1 Jesse Mendez of Ohio State topped Bartlett 4-1 at 141 pounds, and Mesenbrink fell to Iowa State’s No. 4 David Carr at 165 pounds 9-8. Carr’s win gave him his second title for the Cyclones, the first of which came in his freshman season at 157 pounds.
The Nittany Lions weren’t the only team with historic moments on Saturday night, though. The Virginia Tech Hokies crowned just the second national champion in program history as No. 4 Caleb Henson turned up the offense at 149 pounds and earned a 15-7 bonus-point win over Michigan’s No. 6 Austin Gomez, the 2024 Olympic rep for Mexico at 65kg. Henson is not only the second Hokie to finish on top of the podium in program history, but he is also the first national champion in NCAA wrestling history from the state of Georgia. His win is one of four podium finishers for the Hokies as part of their standout weekend in Kansas City.
Arizona State, Cornell and Northern Iowa will also leave the Show-Me State with one champ each. Sun Devil 125-pounder Richard Figueroa earned his first national championship by way of a 7-2 victory against Iowa’s Drake Ayala, while Cornell’s No. 6 Vito Arujau topped four-time NCAA finalist No. 1 Daton Fix of Oklahoma State at 133 pounds 5-3 for his second title and No. 1 Parker Keckeisen bonused No. 3 Dustin Plott of Oklahoma State at 184 pounds.

Anderson & Carter Earn At-Large Bids into NCAA Championships
INDIANAPOLIS – Two Gardner-Webb wrestlers were announced as at-large selections to compete at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships later this month. Jha’Quan Anderson was selected to wrestle at 184 pounds and Todd Carter was selected to compete at 141 pounds. Anderson and Carter are two of 47 total at-large selections, who join the 283 student-athletes who previously qualified through placement at conference tournaments.
“I am proud of these two to get into the national tournament,” said Head Wrestling Coach Daniel Elliott. “They both were pretty disappointed after not qualifying through the conference tournament last week, but their body of work throughout the season showed they deserve this.
“They both have wins over guys who have qualified and deserve to be there. For Jha’quan to finish his career at the national tournament, it is special. Todd sets the tone for how work hard in our program. These two are so deserving of this opportunity and we are proud to represent Gardner-Webb in the national tournament!”
2024 marks Anderson’s third career at-large selection into the national tournament. He enters with an overall mark of 27-7 after a fourth career top-three finish at the Southern Conference Championships last weekend. Earlier this season, Anderson became the first Gardner-Webb wrestler to be named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the prestigious Southern Scuffle, after claiming the title in the 184-pound weight class.
This year marks Carter’s first career selection into the national tournament. He enters off of a runner-up finish at the SoCon tournament and holds a record of 21-9 … story at … GWUsports.com/Anderson-carter-earn-at-large-bids-into-ncaa-championships
