No. 17 Averett men’s wrestling rolls past Southern Virginia

DANVILLE, Va. — No. 17 Averett University men’s wrestling cruised to a 41-3 home win over Southern Virginia University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Thursday night in the Grant Center.
Averett (4-1, 2-0 ODAC) won nine of its 10 matches in the dual against Southern Virginia (0-1, 0-1 ODAC). The Cougars improved to 8-1 all-time in duals against the Knights after earning their eighth consecutive win in the series.
The dual matchup opened at 197 as junior Jacob Jiminez jumped out to a dominant 14-2 lead in the first period before winning by technical fall, 17-2, early in the second period against Loyal Holm. Averett then got six team points from junior Braeden Fluke, who won by fall (1:58) at heavyweight against Southern Virginia’s Porter Trapp.
The Cougars, ranked 17th nationally in The Open Mat’s latest dual rankings, continued their dominance in the dual in the lighter weights. Sophomore Dominic Pascoe inched out a win with a takedown in overtime for an 11-8 sudden victory. Sophomore A.J. Orlando, who is ranked fifth in the region by NWCA, won with a 16-0 tech fall in 1:52 at 133 pounds. Junior Wyatt Parker followed with a pin in 2:02 at 141 as Averett went ahead 25-0 in the match midway through.
Averett also got a pin by freshman Andres Cortes at 157 pounds, a 21-13 major decision from sophomore Cooper Comer at 165, an 8-2 decision from junior Michael Gabbard at 174 and a 7-3 decision at 184 pounds from junior Nolan Gerwitz, who is regionally ranked sixth. … more at … https://averettcougars.com/news/2024/11/21/mens-wrestling-no-17-averett-mens-wrestling-rolls-past-southern-virginia.aspx
