ACC Wrestling Results – mid Jan.

ACC Week One Recap
If week one of ACC duals showed us anything, it is that we should buckle up because the next six weeks are going to be bonkers. We saw two upsets – based on Intermat Dual Rankings – and a shutout for the six teams in action, while UVA made the most of the off week. 
North Carolina had a statement win at home over a top-10 Hokies team. The Tar Heels were propelled by upset wins from Spencer Moore, Josh Ogunsanya, and a huge Gavin Kane pin over TJ Stewart to notch their first win over Virginia Tech in five years. North Carolina did an impressive job of winning the tight bouts; three of their five wins were within a one-takedown score, with two of those coming in sudden victory. Bonus points from the Kane pin and a Lachlan McNeil tech fall proved huge. The Hokies will look to use this week off of conference competition to heal up and return with a full lineup against Duke in two weeks; they were without #12 Connor McGonagle and #1 Caleb Henson in Chapel Hill. 
Not a lot to say about Duke’s trip to NC State. The Wolfpack took care of business and won nine of 10 bouts by bonus points including six tech falls and one pin. Louie Gill filled in at 125 for Vincent Robinson and put on an impressive display; Tyler Tracy got the start at 141 and looked strong. Robinson made his return to the lineup on Monday against Oklahoma State, getting an upset win over #2 Troy Spratley, in what otherwise was a dual the Wolfpack would like to forget. 2025 ACC Wrestling Championship Tickets on Sale Now
CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – Tickets are on sale now for the 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship, set for Sunday, March 9, at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the campus of Duke University in Durham. Duke is hosting the ACC Wrestling Championship inside Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since 1998. This year, the ACC has seven teams that will compete for the conference crown with the addition of Stanford.
Five ACC teams have been ranked all season long in the NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll, led by the six-time defending champion NC State, which has been in the top 10 all year.

Vince Robinson Named Co-Wrestler of the Week
Charlotte, N.C. – Wolfpack wrestler, Vince Robinson, has been named as one of the Co-ACC Wrestlers of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, January 14.
The redshirt freshman scored the lone win in the team’s dual at third-ranked Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Monday night. No. 19 UNC Wrestling Controls Duke, 40-3
DURHAM, N.C. – Nine North Carolina wrestlers were victorious, as the 19th-ranked Tar Heels defeated Duke, 40-3, in Atlantic Coast Conference action. The win for the Tar Heels is the ninth-straight win over the Blue Devils, and the 24th consecutive win for Carolina in Durham, dating back to 1973. Additionally, the Tar Heels have won 48 of the last 50 duals against Duke.
Carolina began the night with three-straight decisions, jumping out to a 9-0 lead over Duke. Freshman Cameron Stinson Jr. (125) earned his first collegiate dual win (8-1 decision), and ranked wrestlers No. 13 Ethan Oakley (2-0 decision) and No. 24 Jayden Scott (9-2 decision), picked up wins for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels followed with six-straight bonus-point victories, beginning with fifth-ranked Lachlan McNeil’s first-period fall over Eli Murray and No. 19 Sonny Santiago collecting the 20-3 technical fall. Making his first dual start of the season at 165 pounds, Omaury Alvarez cruised to a 17-4 major decision, with the Tar Heels earning their second fall of the night at 174 pounds courtesy of 18th-ranked Joshua Ogunsanya. South Carolina Colleges Wrestling Result

Presbyterian College Men’s Wrestling Trounces St. Andrews in 36-Point Cruiser
CLINTON, S.C. – Returning to dual competition for the first time in seven-and-a-half weeks, the Presbyterian College men’s wrestling team walloped the visiting St. Andrews Knights on Wednesday in the Templeton Center, assembling a 45-9 victory.
It’s the largest winning margin for head coach Mark Cody‘s program in one year and one day (a 44-6 decision over Truett McConnell 12 months ago), winning eight of the 10 matches when not factoring in exhibition play.
The lead kept growing for the blue and garnet in a meeting that was scheduled hastily (confirmed on Monday), collecting three technical falls on a night where St. Andrews surrendered four forfeits.
125-pounder Brayden Adams earned his first W of the campaign via 19-3 tech over Caleb Haynes, followed by a swift 2:41 pin by junior Ryan Luna for his fifth win of the still-young season.

#8 Lander Takes Inside Track in West Division with 37-4 win over King
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The eighth-ranked Lander Wrestling team took a big step toward their second consecutive Conference Carolinas West Division title on Wednesday evening as they took down the King Tornado, 37-4, inside the King University Student Center Complex. The two teams came into the matchup as the last two unbeaten teams in the West Division and were the two representatives from the division in last season’s Conference Carolinas Tournament.
Lander improved to 10-3 overall, 6-0 in conference, and 3-0 in their division. The win was the Bearcats’ 25th consecutive win in conference play. King dropped to 7-6 overall with a 4-2 league and 2-1 division record.
Kaden Kuenzi (Silverton, Ore.) started the match in a big way at 125, only needing 1:20 to pin King’s Tyson Upchurch to give Lander an early 6-0 lead.
From there, Lander rattled off three more bonus point wins as Christian Davis (Arizona City, Ariz.) used a third-period takedown to secure an 8-0 major decision at 133 while Isham Peace (Okatie, S.C.) and Reid Noble (Plant City, Fla.) each added tech falls to make the score 20-0, Bearcats, after four matches.

The Cobras win on the road at Allen
The Cobras are back to winning ways after they won 38-12 on the road.
Columbia, SC-  The Cobras are back to winning ways as they won 38-12 over the Allen Yellowjackets. The Seniors led the charge in this match-up. But, the Junior Austin Collins had the stand-out performance of the night winning his match in just 1:00.

Newberry Wolves Overpower Limestone Saints 35-13
NEWBERRY, SC – The Newberry Wolves delivered a commanding performance in their dual against the Limestone Saints, earning a decisive 35-13 victory. The Wolves showcased grit and skill across the weight classes, securing critical points that paved the way for their win.
Newberry kicked off their momentum at 141 pounds as Braden Tatum put on a dominant display against Richard Patanjo, securing a technical fall with a 15-0 victory in just 2:21. This electrifying performance cut Limestone’s lead to 9-5. 
Dennis Virelli set the tone at 157 pounds, dominating Malachi Thomas with a 15-0 technical fall in 5:19, bringing Newberry closer to Limestone, 13-10.  The Wolves then tied the evening with Nick Humphrys’ hard fought 5-1 decision over Samuel Daniels at 165 pounds. Bringing the score to 13-13.
At 174 pounds, Newberry’s Dayton Fields capitalized on a Limestone forfeit, extending the Wolves’ lead. Andrew Reed followed suit at 184 pounds, overwhelming Peyton Miles with an 11-2 major decision. Another forfeit at 197 pounds handed six more points to Newberry making their lead 29-13. Jason Moorman Accepts Tarleton State Head Women’s Role

Jason Moorman has been hired as the new Tarleton State head women’s wrestling coach after leading King University to four national team championships.
It didn’t take Jason Moorman long to find a new job after his surprise departure from King University. Moorman has landed in Stephenville, Texas, as the new head women’s wrestling coach for Tarleton State University. 
This is a promising move for Moorman and women’s wrestling. Tarleton State is on the verge of becoming an NCAA Division I women’s wrestling program. He will be the club coach until the program is officially sanctioned.
Delaware State, Iowa, Lindenwood, Presbyterian, and Sacred Heart are D1 colleges that offer women’s wrestling. Tarleton State could be six. 
“I think it’s an amazing opportunity and I’m extremely grateful,” Moorman said. “Pushing this across the line and getting a D1 program is what Texas needs and what women’s wrestling needs. I’m excited to be a part of making that happen.  “Thank you to Allan Rodger, Steve Silver, Grant Leeth, James Hurley, and the Texas Wrestling Federation. Something special is happening here. Women’s wrestling needs this. Texas wrestling needs this.”
Moorman is arguably the country’s most successful women’s college wrestling coach after serving at King from the 2009-10 season until his exit on October 18, 2024.

Oklahoma State Wrestling on the Verge of Hitting Historical Attendance Mark

Oklahoma State looks to be on track to hit a record historical season average for wrestling attendance this year.
Last year the Cowboys had incredible attendance. I dug into the numbers then and believe it to be the highest average in the history of the “new” Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State “Raised the Roof” on old Gallagher in 2001 and opened the new arena in the middle of that season. Since then, the highest recorded average was last year at 5,871. This year, Oklahoma State is on pace to crush that average based on their reported numbers.
