No. 22 West Virginia Earns First Win Over No. 20 Oklahoma Since 2018

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 22 West Virginia University wrestling team defeated No. 20 Oklahoma, 22-13, for its first ranked win since 2023 and its first win over the Sooners since 2018 on Friday night in Norman, Oklahoma.
West Virginia (8-3, 2-2 Big 12) ended a two-match losing streak with the win. This also marked just the third time the Mountaineers have defeated Oklahoma in program history.
Senior No. 13 Jett Strickenberger began the night by defeating No. 23 Antonio Lorenzo by major decision, 11-2. This marked Strickenberger’s third straight win against a ranked opponent in the 125-pound weight class. The Sooners won the next three matches to lead, 10-4, heading into the 157-pound match.
In the 157-pound match, redshirt freshman Sasha Gavronsky picked up an important win, defeating Landyn Sommer by decision, 7-4. The victory put the Mountaineers down three with five matches remaining.
Fifth-year No. 3 Peyton Hall improved to 21-0 on the year, defeating Oklahoma’s No. 30 Tate Picklo by technical fall, 17-2. No. 25 UMO conquers Belmont Abbey, 21-20
MOUNT OLIVE (Jan. 15) – In a highly competitive Conference Carolinas dual, redshirt junior Slade Watkins won via decision in the heavyweight bout to secure a 21-20 victory over Belmont Abbey on Wednesday night at Kornegay Arena.
With the win, the No. 25 ranked University of Mount Olive men’s wrestling program improved to 8-2 overall while remaining undefeated in league duals with a 5-0 record. The Trojans have won the last three meetings in the series and hold a 3-2 record against the Crusaders. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey dropped to 5-5 this season with a 5-1 mark in conference action.
At 125, redshirt junior Christian Decatur produced a dominant 17-4 major decision over Dylan Drinkard before the Crusaders countered with a 17-3 major decision in the 133-weight class. Freshman Benjamin Hernandez answered with a 10-2 major decision over Luke Kunath at 141 to take an 8-4 lead, but Belmont Abbey responded with an 18-2 tech fall in the 149-weight class to take a narrow 9-8 advantage. Denkins named SoCon Wrestler of the Week
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – 149-pounder Wynton Denkins was selected as the SoCon Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon. The sophomore from Perrysburg, Ohio went 6-0 and took first place at the David H. Lehman ’68 Franklin & Marshall Open last Friday. Denkins has amassed a 20-6 record this season, the first Camel to reach 20 victories.
Denkins was the No. 2 seed at the F&M Open, and he began the tournament with three consecutive bonus-point victories. He defeated Yanni Vines (Columbia) and Jackson Polo (PRTC) by major decision, followed by a tech fall against J. Brown (unattached), a 28-12 score in 6:39.
Denkins followed that up by defeating three seeded opponents in the final three rounds. In the quarterfinal, he bested the No. 7 seed Alex Nini (Rutgers – unattached), 4-1 in the first sudden victory period. His biggest win of the day came in the semifinals against Columbia’s Kai Owen, the No. 3 seed and a NCAA qualifier from a season ago. Denkins scored a takedown in the first period and entered the third with a 3-2 lead. His takedown with 1:15 left in the third period sealed the win.

NC State Freshman Vince Robinson Rocketing Up College Wrestling Rankings
NC State’s Vincent Robinson has been one of the nation’s top freshmen this season, climbing to #3 at 125 pounds after knocking off then-#2 Troy Spratley
One of the top stories of the college season has been the emergence of NC State freshman Vince Robinson and his ascent up the national rankings at 125 pounds. The Chicago native was coming off a redshirt season in which he was limited to just one tournament and one dual.
Throughout the preseason, he was thrown into competition at the weight against three-time ACC champion Jakob Camacho, who was coming back for his seventh season. But after the second weekend of action this season, Robinson’s bright future for the Pack was clear.
Robinson went to the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in mid-November and came home with a perfect 3-0 mark with all his wins against ranked foes (#16, #19 and #13). For his efforts he was named ACC Wrestler of the Week and inserted into the Pack’s starting lineup. “He has done a phenomenal job, jumping right into our lineup,” NC State coach Pat Popolizio said. “He had some really good wins right away. “He has been a great spark for NC State, and he is doing all the right things, like making weight and taking care of school.”

DAVIDSON, North Carolina – The Little Rock Trojans put on a dominant display at the multi-team dual event, claiming decisive victories over Brown, Morgan State, and Davidson to secure first place. The team showcased impressive performances across multiple weight classes, demonstrating their depth and strength on the mat.
Little Rock 28, Brown 13 
Little Rock opened the competition with a commanding 28-13 win over Brown. Tyson Roach set the tone at 125 lbs with a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Jared Brunner. Brennan Van Hoecke followed up at 141 lbs with an electrifying 15-9 decision over Giuseppe Iamunno. The Trojans gained momentum as Jordan Williams (149 lbs) and Matty Bianchi (157 lbs) secured major decision victories. Joseph Bianchi (165 lbs) delivered an emphatic 19-2 technical fall over Keegan Rothrock, while Tyler Brennan (174 lbs) controlled his match for a 10-0 major decision. At 197 lbs, Stephen Little added another technical fall (19-4) to solidify the win. Camels best Runnin’ Bulldogs for opening SoCon win, 31-9
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Campbell Camels wrestling squad opened its 2025 SoCon season with a resounding 31-9 victory over Gardner-Webb Friday evening at Paul Porter Arena. The Fighting Camels (2-7, 1-0 SoCon) had strong performances throughout the lineup, including pins at 174 pounds and heavyweight to come out on top against the Runnin’ Bulldogs (3-6, 0-1).
#22 Anthony Molton continued his hot streak with a tech fall over Jeffery Jacome to start the night. CU never looked back from the advantage, leading wire-to-wire.
After GWU scored a decision at 133 pounds, #27 Shannon Hanna earned a 2-1 upset victory over No. 19 Todd Carter at 141 pounds. Hanna started on bottom in the second and scored a reversal about 20 seconds into the period. After Carter was able to escape, neither wrestler secured the upper hand in the third period. The win is Hanna’s third over a ranked opponent this season.
Gardner-Webb bounced back with a win at 149 during the tiebreak period, but Chris Earnest prevented them from getting any closer. In his first dual action of the season, Earnest scored an 11-2 major decision over Drew Pepin at 157 pounds.
Dom Baker followed that immediately with a major decision of his own at 165 pounds. His 13-4 performance over Tyler Brignola gave the Camels a 16-6 advantage through six bouts. The scoring continued for Campbell at 174 pounds. Riley Augustine, also in his first dual match of the season, pinned Andrew Wilson in the first period for his second victory by fall of the season.

Hawkeyes Roll Past No. 9 Illinois

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The second ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won eight of 10 matches to put together a 28-6 victory over ninth ranked Illinois on Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes outscored the Illini in total match points 69-21 and had 15 takedowns to Illinois’ one. “I know that we need to work harder at scoring points,” said head coach Tom Brands.
Joey Cruz got things started for the Hawkeyes with bonus points at 125 pounds to open the dual. He defeated Caelan Riley via major decision, 13-3.
In a top five matchup at 133, Drake Ayala used a third period takedown with 40 seconds left to win over second-ranked Lucas Byrd, 4-2. “It has been a position I’ve worked on,” said Ayala. “I got there, and I capitalized. I have to get more of that offense going in the first period and second period.”
Illinois got on the board with a win at 141 with No. 12 Danny Pucino defeating Ryder Block, 4-3. Kyle Parco got the Hawkeyes back in the win column against No. 12 Kannon Webster winning a 1-0 decision. At 157, true freshman Miguel Estrada picked up his first career ranked win in his Carver-Hawkeye arena debut defeating No. 20 Jason Kraisser, 3-2.
Michael Caliendo came out after the break and put together a 20-4 technical fall over 11th ranked Braeden Scoles at 165. At 174, Patrick Kennedy tallied his eighth win of the season defeating No. 21 Danny Braunagel, 5-0. Gabe Arnold picked up a top 10 win at 184 pounds over No. 10 Edmond Ruth winning a 5-1 decision.

Averett University Men’s wrestling celebrates Senior Night with ODAC win over Greensboro
DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men’s wrestling celebrated Senior Night with a dominant 41-13 win over Greensboro College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Thursday night in the Grant Center. The Cougars won seven of the 10 dual matches, plus four of five extra matches.
Averett (15-12, 4-0 ODAC) rolled out to a 12-0 lead after the first two weight classes as sophomore Dominic Pascoe got a first-period pin at 125 pounds, and sophomore Jesse Lemon also won by fall in the final seconds of the first period at 133.
Defending national champion Josh Wilson got Greensboro (1-3, 0-2 ODAC) its first team point of the night at 141 with a technical fall, but the Pride forfeited at 149 and 157 as Averett’s dual lead grew to 24-5. At 165, regionally ranked junior Xavier Swanson picked up six more points for the Cougars with a first-period pin. Oklahoma State Cowboys Rout No. 22 West Virginia, 30-12

STILLWATER – The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 22 West Virginia, 30-12, on Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena to improve to 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in Big 12 duals. West Virginia dropped to 8-4 on the year with the loss.
With the 30-12 victory, the Pokes reached the 30-point mark for the ninth straight dual, good for the second-longest streak to begin a season in program history (first 10 in 1987-88). The performance was propelled by five bonus-point wins, bringing OSU’s season bonus rate up to 48.3%. That mark would be the highest in program history if the season ended today. In addition, 8,257 fans piled into Gallagher-Iba Arena to set the venue’s highest attendance of the season and raise its season average to 7,073. “We found ourselves in some tough matches tonight,” head coach David Taylor said. “It’s good for our team to experience that. I think that when you wrestle for a program like Oklahoma State, you are going to get the best of everybody.”
Jett Strickenberger gave the Mountaineers an early lead with a pin of Troy Spratley at 125 pounds, but Oklahoma State bounced back quickly as Cael Hughes secured a 9-6 win over Tommy Maddox in sudden victory and improved his record to 8-0. Tagen Jamison followed suit at 141 pounds as he majored No. 29 Jordan Titus, 14-4, through a takedown in the match’s final second. The win bumped Jamison’s record to 15-1 and was his 11th bonus-point effort of the season, tied for most on the team.

Humboldt Wrestling Stuns No. 16 Colorado School of Mines in Thrilling 25-19 Victory

GOLDEN, Colo. – Cal Poly Humboldt wrestling delivered a stunning performance on Friday night, toppling No. 16-ranked Colorado School of Mines, 25-19, in a dual that came down to the final match in Golden, Colorado. The victory was sealed in dramatic fashion by heavyweight Carson Hatch, whose dominant performance closed out the night and gave Cal Poly Humboldt their second straight victory.

Wyoming Wrestling Rallies for 19-17 Victory at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Oregon (1/19/25) – The University of Wyoming wrestling team has made a recent habit of rallying for dual wins. The Pokes did it a couple times at the NWCA Dual Meet National Championships a week ago and did it again Sunday afternoon at Oregon State.
The Cowboys won three of the final five bouts against the Beavers with No. 11 Joey Novak (197) earning the most important one. He logged a pin, and the crucial bonus points helped secure the 19-17 dual victory. “Joey’s pin was the difference,” head coach Mark Branch said. “There’s certainly some negatives and some positives from this one. It was a good team victory.”
The win pushes Wyoming to 6-5 on the season. Oregon State falls to 1-5. The victory also snapped the Beavers’ three-match win streak in the series. Novak’s third-period pin of Vaun Halstead vaulted Wyoming ahead 19-14. The late dual push was also helped by Cooper Voorhees (165) and Eddie Neitenbach (184) who registered big wins.
Voorhees defeated Murphy Menke via decision, 8-3.
