Schulz to join prestigious UNC Pembroke program
MOREHEAD CITY — There wasn’t another school that hardly stood a chance with John Schulz.
The recent West Carteret graduate has known since his sophomore year that he wanted to wrestle at UNC Pembroke. “Pembroke has been my number one school for a long time” he said. “They did a wrestling camp here my sophomore year, and since then, I kind of had them on my radar. I’ve just been developing a relationship with them.”
Schulz credited assistant coach Nick Daggett for his recruitment and attention to developing a relationship over the past three years. It’s easy to see why Schulz is so enamored with the UNCP program.
The Braves finished tied for 10th at the NCAA Division II National Championships in the 2023-2024 season, which was the highest standing since the 2011-2012 campaign. They have now logged team points at 22 straight NCAA Championships, dating back to the 2002-03 campaign.
Othello “O.T.” Johnson, who is heading into his 15th season as the coach, has led the team to some of the finest years in the history of the program, including a 2017-18 season that led to the program’s first conference title in 34 years. In that same season, UNCP turned in its seventh straight top 25 finish under Johnson after finishing 15th at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The Braves have finished in the top 25 on three more occasions since.
Johnson has produced 59 NCAA qualifiers in his tenure. … more at … https://www.carolinacoastonline.com/news_times/sports/article_a36dc24b-977a-42b2-843c-066e6e3a236a.html
