Wolves Storm Back from 21–0 Deficit to Defeat Montevallo in Home Dual
NEWBERRY, SC –The Newberry College men’s wrestling team delivered an outstanding comeback, erasing a 21–0 lead by Montevallo and won 30–21 in a thriller home dual.
The dual began with a tough stretch for the Wolves, as Montevallo claimed the first four weights. Falls at 125 and 149, along with a major decision at 133 and a tech fall at 141, put Newberry in a deep early deficit, trailing 21–0 before the halfway point.
From 157 pounds on, the Wolves flipped the momentum. Matt Hoelke kicked off the surge at 157 with a gritty 2–1 decision, getting Newberry on the board and sparking new life into the lineup. Bo Perkins followed at 165 with a dominant fall at 3:23, cutting the Montevallo lead to 21–9.
Josh Echeverria kept the rally rolling at 174, controlling his match for a 10–4 decision to bring the score to 21–12. At 184, Hayven Jenkins delivered one of the night’s biggest moments, pinning his opponent in just 1:24 to pull Newberry within striking distance at 21–18.
Newberry officially took the lead at 197, where John Parker made quick work of his opponent, securing a pin in 1:38 to push the Wolves ahead 24–21 with one match remaining. Newberry Men’s Wrestling Dominates Tri-Dual at Bluefield State University
BLUEFIELD, WV – The Newberry Wolves turned in a commanding performance on Wednesday, sweeping both Bluefield State and Emory & Henry in a dominant tri-dual showing on the road. Newberry rolled to a 54-0 shutout over Bluefield State before following it up with a 57-0 rout of Emory & Henry, closing the night with ten victories in each dual and a combined 111-0 scoring margin.

The Wolves set the tone early and never looked back, starting the night with a hard-fought decision at 125 pounds as Ricky Springs battled to a 9–7 win. Newberry then exploded for bonus points, highlighted by Ethan McCullough’s 16–1 tech fall at 133 and a dominant 21–4 tech fall from Ben Guilliam at 141.
Pins from Sebastian Melendez (149), Matt Hoelke (157), and Rylan Madison (285) stretched the lead, while Bo Perkins, Donovan Hawthorne, and Cole McCullough all secured forfeits to keep the momentum rolling. Sheeren’s Pin Secures Comeback Victory for #2 Lander
GREENWOOD, S.C. – The second-ranked Lander Wrestling team found itself in uncharted territory on Wednesday night, trailing 13–0 after four bouts. But the Bearcats responded by winning five of the final six matches, capped by an electric pin from #7 Isaac Sheeren, to complete the largest comeback in program history with a 24–17 win over Belmont Abbey inside Horne Arena.
The Crusaders (3–1, 3–1 CC) opened with a major decision at 125 and followed with tight decisions at 133 and 141. At 149, #5 Isham Peace nearly put Lander on the board, but a late takedown swung the match in Belmont Abbey’s favor, extending the deficit to 13–0.
From there, Lander flipped the dual.
Reid Noble jump-started the rally with a dominant 18–3 tech fall at 157, using three first-period takedowns and a four-point near fall to give the Bearcats their first points of the night. #1 David Hunsberger followed by overwhelming his opponent with a 19–3 tech fall in just 2:45, trimming the gap to 13–10.
