Women’s wrestling beats Mount Olive, nabs program-record eighth win of season
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.— The Montreat College women’s wrestling team took on the University of Mount Olive Trojans Wednesday evening in a team dual matchup at Gardner-Webb University. Battling the NCAA Division II institution, the Cavaliers toughed out a 27-21 triumph to remain perfect on the year. Not only does the Cavs’ 8-0 record signify the squad’s best start to a campaign, but the eight wins also mark the team’s most dual victories in a single season in program history.
Mount Olive (0-1) opened the competition with a 4-1 lead thanks to a tech fall in the 103-lb weight class. Despite suffering a defeat, Morgan Repasky managed to score four points during the bout, which resulted in a team point for Montreat.
The Cavaliers secured their initial win of the night courtesy of Dinayah Vazquez. Ranked No. 9 in the NAIA’s 110-lb weight class, Vazquez needed just 4:34 to register a pin and put her team back on top, 6-4.
Daniela Espinal captured a forfeit triumph at 124 to counter the Trojans’ forfeit victory at 117. However, UMO reclaimed the lead midway through the dual after notching a pin in the 131-lb bout. With five matchups in the books, Mount Olive maintained a 14-11 advantage.
