One for the Thumb – No. 15 Lander Dominates Twice to Win Fifth Straight Conference Carolinas Title
PEMBROKE, N.C. – The 15th-ranked Lander Wrestling team turned in one of the most dominant days in program history Sunday, winning 19 of 20 bouts to claim their fifth-straight league crown at the Conference Carolinas Wrestling Championship inside Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Lander rolled past Belmont Abbey, 43-3, in the semifinals before shutting out host and 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke, 39-(-2), in the championship match. Both victories marked the largest margins over each opponent in program history. The title is Lander’s third under the current Conference Carolinas banner, to go along with two South Atlantic Conference Carolinas championships.
The Bearcats’ 43 points in the semifinal were their most ever in the Conference Carolinas Championship, while the 39 points in the title bout were the most in a championship match in program history and the second-most ever at the championship site.
Semifinal: #15 Lander 43, Belmont Abbey 3
Lander made sure there would be no repeat of November’s early deficit against the Crusaders.
Kaden Kuenzi and #7 James Joplin opened the dual with bonus-point wins to stake the Bearcats to a 9-0 lead. After Belmont Abbey picked up its lone win at 141, Lander slammed the door with seven straight victories, six coming with bonus points.
Isham Peace earned his fourth major decision of the season at 149, and Noah Roulo shook off a frantic opening period at 157 to roll to a 27-11 technical fall. David Hunsberger pushed his Division II-leading tech fall total to 12 with a 19-3 victory.
Maxwell Kiel clinched the dual with a shutout major decision against his former team. Wisconsin shocks Michigan in upset victory
Badgers edge Wolverines, 19-17, in Field House thriller
By: Aliza Manekia
MADISON, Wis. – No. 22 Wisconsin wrestling delivered a statement win Sunday afternoon, knocking off No. 10 Michigan, 19-17, in the final home match of the season at the UW Field House. The victory marks the Badgers’ first top-10 upset since the ’22-’23 season and their first Big Ten top-ten victory since the ’19-’20 campaign. Wisconsin improves to 12–4 overall and 7-1 at home this season.
Wyatt Ingham opened the dual with one of his strongest performances of the year, scoring early and sealing the win with a last-second takedown in the third period to put Wisconsin on the board. Nicolar Rivera followed with a hard-fought decision over Diego Sotelo, battling through three tough periods to keep the Badgers in front.
At 133 pounds, Zan Fugitt built momentum with a dominant showing, piling up multiple takedowns en route to a major decision and key bonus points. Joseph Zargo added to the lead with a late takedown in the final seconds of the third period. Despite a Michigan challenge, the call stood, pushing the Badgers’ team score higher midway through the dual.
Luke Mechler delivered one of the biggest moments of the afternoon, fighting through regulation and overtime before securing riding time and winning a tightly contested 4-3 decision in tiebreakers. App. State Improves to 6-0 in SoCon with Road Win
DAVIDSON, N.C. — Remaining unbeaten in SoCon duals, App State Wrestling started its final road swing of the regular season by taking nine of 10 matches in a 38-3 victory at Davidson on Friday night.
The first-place Mountaineers (9-5, 6-0) wrestle again Sunday at preseason favorite Chattanooga, which is 8-5 overall and 5-1 in SoCon duals, with the lone league setback being a 19-18 loss to The Citadel in a showdown decided by tiebreaking criteria. An 18-all tie in that dual was broken by the fact that the only pin of the night belonged to The Citadel, which fell to 4-1 in the league via a 23-13 loss at App State.
With two SoCon duals left on App State’s schedule, the outcome Sunday in Chattanooga could play a big role in determining if there is one outright champion or co-champions in the regular season race.
App State wrestled seven of its 10 primary starters at Davidson, and redshirt senior Joe Zovistoski earned the first dual win of his career with a 9-4 decision against Josh Lange at 174 pounds.
Making his third career dual appearance after being named a NWCA Scholar All-American last year, Zovistoski took a 3-1 lead by recording a takedown late in the second period and finishing the period on top. Lange followed Zovistoski’s escape to open the third with a tying takedown, but Zovistoski responded with a tiebreaking escape and sealed the match on a takedown shortly thereafter.
Joe Fongaro, a Rutgers transfer in his first year at App State, made his SoCon dual debut and earned his second dual win of the season at 141 pounds, while Kai O’Dell improved to 3-0 in his career as a dual starter.
App State built a 22-0 lead through four matches thanks to two forfeits (at 197 and 125) and a pair of tech falls (from heavyweight Stephan Monchery and Jarvis Little at 133) before Fongaro fired in immediately and recorded a takedown less than five seconds … more at … https://appstatesports.com/news/2026/2/13/wrestling-improves-to-6-0-in-socon-with-road-win.aspx
