Hofstra Wins Three Championships, Place Eight At New York State Championships
Garden City, NY – Hofstra wrestlers placed in eight weight classes with three winning championships at the 2024 New York State Collegiate Championships hosted by Nassau Community College Saturday. Two of the eight place-winners – Greyson Harris and Adrian Sans – wrestled attached, while the other six – Frank Volpe, Danny Church, Cam Ice, Dylan Zenion, Joe Russo, and Gavin Proffitt – competed unattached. 
All three champions – Harris, Volpe, and Church – wrestled in the freshman/sophomore division, Russo was the only placewinner to compete in the open division as he finished fifth at 165 pounds.  Harris won three consecutive matches by tech fall before a narrow 8-7 decision over Ithaca’s Brian Bienus in the 165 pound final. Harris led 6-2 going into the third period before Bienus scored a four-point near fall to tie the score. Harris got a reversal with 22 seconds to go to take the lead with Bienus earning a point on a stalling call in the final seconds to account for the final. 
Volpe cruised to the finals at 157 pounds with wins by fall, major decision, and decision. In the championship match he trailed Niagara County Community College’s Kace Cook 4-2 in the third period before scoring a takedown with 29 seconds remaining to get the 5-4 victory.  Church had a bye in his round of 16 match at 285 pounds and then picked up a 36 second fall in the quarterfinals. Lowerweights Ignite Bounceback Win over No. 13 Rutgers

No. 11 Michigan claimed seven bouts, including five ranked wins and two with bonus points, to beat No. 13 Rutgers 23-10 at Crisler Center.
» Michael DeAugustino (125 pounds), Dylan Ragusin (133) and Sergio Lemley (141) opened the dual with three straight ranked wins at the lowerweights; Lemley rallied to upset 11th-ranked Mitch Moore 10-7 in overtime.
» Ragusin and Lucas Davison (Hwt) both earned top-10 wins; Ragusin defeated eighth-ranked Dylan Shawver 8-5 while Davison beat seventh-ranked Yaraslau Slavikouski 4-0 in the final bout.

Binghamton Wrestling Upsets No. 18 Navy
Victory is first for the Bearcats against a top 20 opponent since joining Division I
VESTAL, N.Y. –  In a thrilling comeback, the Binghamton wrestling team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final three matches to upset No. 18 Navy 18-17 Sunday at the Events Center. The victory was followed by a 22-11 loss to Army to close out the doubleheader.  
This is the first time since the university joined Division I in 2001 that the Bearcats have defeated an opponent ranked in the top 20. It is also the first time the Bearcats defeated a top 25 opponent since Feb. 20, 2015, when Binghamton upset No. 22 Bucknell 18-16. Ultimately, it marks the fifth time Binghamton has defeated a ranked opponent since joining Division I, and the first under Head Coach Kyle Borshoff.  
Trailing 17-7, the Bearcats began their comeback when Jacob Nolan defeated David Key 8-3 to bring it to 17-10. Lou DePrez followed that with the first of his two technical falls on the day when he beat Daniel Williams 20-4. With the score at 17-15, that set up a winner-take-all showdown between Cory Day and No. 17 Grady Griess. Long Island University Wrestling Earns Win vs. Morgan State in Pennsylvania

CLARION, Pa. — The LIU wrestling team defeated Morgan State on Sunday while also facing Kent State and host Clarion. The Sharks defeated Morgan State, 25-9, to open the event.
Robbie Sagaris produced a technical fall at 125 pounds to kick things off.
Devin Matthews (7-2 at 141 pounds), Drew Witham (12-4 at 149), Rhise Royster (12-6 at 157), Corey Connolly (14-9 at 174), Gavin Claro (11-2 at 184) and John Dusza (2-1 at 197) also produced victories.

Hofstra Rallies Past Franklin And Marshall In EIWA Opener
Lancaster, PA – Keaton Kluever, ranked 22nd at 285 pounds, scored a tech fall victory to put the Pride back on top and a forfeit win sealed the deal as Hofstra opened Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association action with a 21-16 victory over Franklin and Marshall Sunday. The teams split the 10 matches as Hofstra (6-3, 1-0 EIWA) won its third consecutive dual match. 
After losing a 5-2 decision at 141 pounds to open the match, the Pride ran off three consecutive victories to take a 10-3 lead. Noah Tapia continued his winning ways with a 14-5 major decision over Josh Hillard at 149 pounds. Jurius Clark followed with a 7-4 win over Dominic Wheatley at 157, snapping a 4-4 tie with a third period takedown. Jake Slotnick closed the run with a 5-2 decision over Josh Palmucci at 165. 
The Diplomats (3-2, 0-1 EIWA) made it a 10-6 match at 174 pounds as Noah Fox took a 5-4 decision over Ross McFarland. 18th-ranked James Conway followed with an 8-1 win over the Pride’s Will Conlon at 184 pounds to bring the Diplomats within one, 10-9. Army Wrestling Picks Up Road Win At Binghamton, Moves to 3-0 in EIWA
VISTAL, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team picked up a big road victory against Binghamton on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Bearcats 22-11 to move to 3-0 in EIWA play.  
The Black Knights raced out to a 16-0 lead right away. No. 32 Ethan Berginc kicked off the match with an 8-2 win over Carson Wagner in the 125 division. In the 133 division, Braden Basile then took a 8-4 win over Micah Roes.  Logan Brown earned an 8-4 victory over Ivan Garcia in the 141 fight. Matt Williams proceeded to get an 11-7 victory in the 149 division to put Army up 12-0. Nate Lukez took an 11-3 victory to push the Black Knight advantage to 16-0.

JWU Providence Wildcats win New England Wrestling Association Duals
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) wrestling team ran the table at the 2024 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals on Sunday afternoon at the Wildcat Center, defeating Bridgewater St. (55-7), Trinity (CT) (57-0), Springfield (41-4), and Coast Guard (16-15) to take home the championship.  
Junior Joziah Fry secured wins over No. 2 ranked Chase Randall (Coast Guard), No. 3 Gianni Manginelli (Springfield), and No. 7 Malcolm Chrispin (Bridgewater St.) at 133 lbs.  
Classmate Gabriel Leo-Esparolini (141 lbs.) picked up wins over No. 6 ranked Ryan Kozdra (Springfield) and No. 7 Owen Woolcott (Coast Guard. Freshman Jack Richardson entered the event No. 4 in the region and upended No. 3 ranked Noah Caskey (Coast Guard) in the finals at 157 lbs.

Pac-12 Weekly Recap (1/16/2024)
Cal Poly goes 3-0 at home
Cal Poly won three straight home duals over the weekend. The Mustangs defeated American 39-3, Northern Colorado 23-15, and Air Force 23-17. 
Three Mustangs went undefeated during the weekend, Chance and Daschle Lamer, and Zeth Romney. Chance earned bonus-point victories, winning 22-4, 22-7, and 17-9. Daschle picked up a first-period pin and two decisions. Romney dominated with a 24-second pin, a 17-1 tech fall and 4-1 in sudden victory. In addition, Legend Lamer capped off a 2-1 weekend with a tech fall, making it the first time the three Lamer brothers wrestled together and marked an 8-1 record. Lastly, Jarad Priest captured the clinching win against Air Force with a 6-3 decision at 197 pounds against Calvin Sund. 

CSU Bakersfield remains winless
The Roadrunners had three duals over the weekend. However, Bakersfield lost to American 36-8, Campbell 39-3, and Central Michigan 40-3. Guillermo Escobedo won the only match against Campbell, defeating Brant Cracraft 4-2 at 165 pounds.
Augustine Garcia had a ranked win against Central Michigan, defeating Alex Cramer 8-2 at 174 pounds. Escobedo defeated Ryan Zimmerman 10-1 and Devyn Flores-Che defeated Kaden Milheim, 10-2 in the American dual.

Little Rock dominates in 4 duals

Gratitude Key for Erisman in Little Rock’s Growth
Little Rock has become anything but a little program during the 2023-24 season. Although Little Rock’s program is still taking baby steps, the program has been setting records each week. “There is a big gratitude for all the guys for believing in what we are doing and they have bought in so many different ways,” coach Neil Erisman said. “We always believed we could be this type of team and it’s fun to see it come together.” Little Rock’s achievements have come in various ways, including nine dual wins and counting, being ranked top 25 for the first time, finishing top 10 at multiple tournaments, and more. The Trojans have been able to create these records while competing in its fifth season. “It starts with the quality and character of the kids we are recruiting,” Erisman said. “We get the right guys who love what we talk about, what we believe in, and jump wholeheartedly into it.”
Even though Little Rock continues to rise, it was not always smooth sailing for the Trojans. First, Erisman and the squad had to celebrate the small victories.  “It started with celebrating that we didn’t get tech falled in a match,” Erisman said. “Through that, it gave the guys a real sense of gratefulness.” In addition, Erisman and his staff had to make sure to keep confidence flowing high despite tough times. Lastly, Erisman stated the toughest thing about building Little Rock is having no mentors for the wrestlers. “In the end, the culture of your team is who they are when the coaches are not around,” Erisman said. “When you have a group of young kids coming in and buying into a dream, they don’t know it and haven’t been through it. Ming Delivers for Cardinal
PHILADELPHIA – With the dual on the line, Peter Ming secured a fall to propel No. 20 Stanford to a 20-16 win over Penn, Sunday, at The Palestra. Stanford improves to 6-2 on the season, while Penn drops to 1-4. The Cardinal and Quakers each won five bouts, three coming by bonus points for Stanford. Trailing 16-14 in the team score, the dual came down to Ming and Penn heavyweight John Stout. The senior registered his team-leading fourth fall of the season, putting Stout on his back in the second for the walk-off win.
Senior 197-pounder Nick Stemmet, ranked 17th nationally, recorded a 12-4 major decision over Martin Cosgrove to put the Cardinal in position to win the dual. Stemmet moves to 20-5 overall and 6-2 in duals. Penn jumped out to a 10-0 lead, picking up wins in the first three matches. Redshirt senior 149-pounder Jaden Abas scored the first team points for the Cardinal with a 5-1 decision over Andy Troczynski. Arizona State Sun Devils Pick Up Big Road Win in Nailbiter Against Panthers
PITTSBURGH – The Sun Devils picked up a big, much-needed road win against No. 29 Pittsburgh on Sunday at the Fitzgerald Field House, 21-20, courtesy of a bonus-point win from Jacori Teemer.
Trailing 20-14 heading into the heavyweight bout, No. 5 Cohlton Schultz was nearing a win against No. 12 Dayton Pitzer. In the third, however, Pitzer went down with a shoulder injury and defaulted, tying the match at 20 apiece. The Sun Devils then notched the deciding point on criteria. It was a fast and emphatic start for the Sun Devils, who grabbed four of the first six bouts of the afternoon. Jacori Teemer’s tech fall victory against Jared Keslar, 6:33 into his match, was a massive boost for the Sun Devils.

PHILADELPHIA – In its final nonconference dual, No. 20 Stanford won nine of 10 bouts to defeat Drexel, 34-6, on Sunday in Philadelphia. The Cardinal improves to 7-2 on the season, while the Dragons drop to 2-7 overall. Five of Stanford’s nine wins came by bonus points. 
Stanford jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the dual as No. 12 Nico Provo and Dom LaJoie registered decisions at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Little Rock Wrestling Knocks Off #24 Arizona State, Program’s First Win Over a Ranked Team
Historic win marks a turning point in Little Rock’s young journey as a team
LITTLE ROCK – The Little Rock wrestling team has just knocked off its first ranked opponent in program history, and what better way to do it than in front of over 1,000 fans at home for their conference opener against Arizona State. After notching historic moment after historic moment over the last year – over the last five years since the Trojans first stepped onto the mat for the first time, really – Little Rock has now proved itself one of the top teams in the country.
“What was not to celebrate?” asked head coach Neil Erisman following the match. “It was our first big-time win for our program. How about Arkansas wrestling – doing things that weren’t imaginable even 10 years ago, and now we’ve got wrestling at every level. What a night.”
The night certainly ended on a high note, yet Arizona State started off with the upper hand, taking four of the first five bouts. Although Nasir Bailey claimed his match by decision over a ranked Sun Devil, the visitors had 13 team points to Little Rock’s 3. The tide turned after the teams returned from intermission and Joseph Bianchi stepped up for his bout at 165 pounds. Despite trailing 6-1 going into the final two minutes, the older of the two Bianchis on the roster went into work mode, pushing the match to sudden victory overtime and collecting the final takedown to win 11-8.
The Trojans took the next two: Tyler Brennan by decision and Triston Wills by major decision to tie the dual 13-13. That string of victories was even more notable since the three – Bianchi, Brennan, and Wills – are all redshirt seniors set to be honored on Senior Day in two weeks. ”It was the guys that have been here from the beginning that got the ball rolling,” said Coach Erisman. “It was a great moment, looking at Joey and Tyler and Triston and going, I remember when that went the other way. ASU Wrestling Upping Commitment Level After ‘Frustrating’ Loss To ISU
Arizona State wrestling coach Zeke Jones said the Sun Devils have had “a great two-week cycle” after a 28-10 loss to Iowa State
It was after a 28-10 loss to #5 Iowa State on Jan. 5 that Arizona State coach Zeke Jones let his Sun Devil squad know that he wasn’t satisfied with their fight or their toughness.
ASU lost eight of 10 bouts, two by technical fall and six others by six, four, four, five, seven and one point. The Sun Devils bounced back two days later with a 43-0 shutout at Cal Bakersfield to improve their midseason record to 2-3, but Jones made sure the tone was set and the message was heard. “Yeah, it was frustrating … just not finishing out the matches for a variety of reasons,” he said. “But it’s been a great two-week cycle. That’s part of the learning processes. When you get 10 to 15 matches under your belt in the season, you know exactly what you need to work on. And then those that go back and work on it improve the fastest — that’s part of this phase right now is correcting those mistakes and the team really has responded.” One of the losses was fifth-ranked All-America Jacori Teemer falling 9-5 to #11 Cody Chittum. Big 12 Weekly Recap (1/17/2024)
Air Force (Overall: 2-4; Conference: 0-2): Dual Results (WYO) | Dual Results (CP)
The Falcons hosted two duals but dropped both to Wyoming and Cal Poly. Giano Petrucelli, Sam Wolf, and Wyatt Hendrickson went 2-0 on the weekend, with Petrucelli and Hendrickson getting bonus points in each. Hendrickson scored two falls to get his season total up to 11; over the weekend he spent just 1:18 on the mat to get his wins. 
Next Up: Air Force competes against SDSU and NDSU on the road on January 26th and 28th. 

California Baptist (Overall: 3-6; Conference: 0-3): Dual Results
California Baptist dropped a 20-12 dual against conference opponent Northern Colorado over the weekend, but got a big upset. Eli Griffin kicked off the dual with a 7-4 upset over Big 12 champ Stevo Poulin despite a third-period injury that slowed him down. Dayne Morton, Carter Schubert, and Nathan Haas also won decisions. After a slow start to the year, Griffin is back to looking like a contender in a chaotic weight class. 
Next Up: California Baptist heads north to compete against Big 12 foes NDSU and SDSU on January 20th and 21st respectively. 

Iowa State (Overall: 9-1; Conference: 2-0): Dual Results
The Cyclones had a dual against Pitt canceled due to the snowstorm, but still got a conference win over the visiting Wolverines. They beat Utah Valley 44-3 including seven bonus wins and a forfeit at heavyweight. Zach Redding continues to man the 149 spot and scored a late takedown to beat Isaiah Delgado. Julien Broderson lost to one of two ranked Utah Valley wrestlers, dropping a 6-1 decision to Evan Bockman. 
Next Up: Iowa State duals Oklahoma on January 26th and Oklahoma State on January 27th. 

Missouri (Overall: 7-0; Conference: 3-0): Dual Results
The Tigers briefly escaped the cold, heading west for a dual against a young but tough Stanford team. They dominated with a 39-0 win and six bonus point wins. Noah Surtin hit a big move late to major Nico Provo 12-3. Logan Gioffre got his biggest win of the year with an 8-1 decision over Jaden Abas. Gioffre is now 5-4 on the year with all of his losses coming to top eight wrestlers. Brock Mauller got back in the win column over Daniel Cardenas, winning the takedown battle 4-1. Peyton Mocco returned to the lineup with a 21-8 major over Ty Monteiro. SOUTH DAKOTA STATE WRESTLING TEAM CRACKS TOP 10 FOR FIRST TIME
The South Dakota State wrestling team reached another milestone Tuesday by achieving its first top-10 ranking in a Division I team poll.  
The Jackrabbits, 6-2 in duals this season, checked in at No. 10 in the latest rankings conducted by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. SDSU moved up one spot in this week’s poll after victories over Kent State (50-0) and Navy (30-13) Jan. 12 at the Virginia Duals.  
For the third consecutive week, all 10 Jackrabbit starters are ranked individually in their respective weight classes. South Dakota State spotted Northern Colorado an early lead, but the 10th-ranked Jackrabbits stormed back with five victories by technical fall and another by major decision to come out on top, 29-16, in their Big 12 Conference dual opener Friday night at Frost Arena.  
SDSU ran its winning streak to four matches in improving to 7-2 overall. Northern Colorado dropped to 8-3 in duals this season, including a 1-2 mark against Big 12 opponents.
The Bears got out of the gates quickly, building a 7-0 advantage by winning a pair of matchups between ranked wrestlers. At 125 pounds, No. 16 Stevo Poulin registered a 14-6 major decision over 17th-ranked Tanner Jordan. Poulin, the defending Big 12 champion, raced out to a 7-2 first-period lead with a pair of takedowns and added a takedown in each of the next two periods to seal the victory.
The 133-pound matchup between No. 16 Derrick Cardinal and UNC’s Dominick Serrano was a defensive battle through the first two periods. After a scoreless opening stanza, the 26th-ranked Serrano cracked the scoring column first with a reversal in the second period, then came up with the decisive takedown and added a point for a minute-plus advantage in riding time to come away with a 6-2 decision.
Returning All-American Clay Carlson put the Jackrabbits on the right path with a major decision of his own, posting a 14-3 victory over Armando Garcia. Carlson led 9-2 through one period after recording a three-point near-fall after his first takedown and tallying a second takedown later in the frame.

Wyoming Wrestling Controls Dual En Route to 22-12 Victory Over Wolverines
OREM, Utah (1/20/24) –Sloan Swan hasn’t wrestled a whole bunch this season for the University of Wyoming. The 157-pound freshman has competed in a couple tournaments and a couple duals but hasn’t been a consistent fixture in the lineup. Swan made another start Saturday at Utah Valley. And his impressive come-from-behind performance solidified a strong start and catapulted a strong finish for the Cowboys. Wyoming ended up topping the Wolverines, 22-12, inside Lockhart Arena. The victory improves the Pokes to 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in Big 12 action, while the loss drops Utah Valley to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play. “Sloan was down 5-0 going into the third period and then scored 17 points,” head coach Mark Branch said. “That’s inspiration, and that really lifted the team up. Those things play a factor in a dual setting.”
Swan logged a 17-7 major decision over Alex Emmer after, as Branch said, he was down 5-0 with just two minutes of the match remaining. The sizable rally improved Swan to 9-4 on the year. Swan’s victory cemented a strong start for Wyoming, which won four of the first five matches. NDSU Wrestling Picks Up Big 12 Win Over Cal Baptist
FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State wrestling team came from behind to defeat California Baptist 25-15 in Big 12 action Saturday night at the Scheels Center. Cal Baptist (3-7, 0-4 Big 12) scored the first two victories of the night with a pair of pins to take a 12-0 lead after 125 and 133 pounds. However, the Bison (2-6, 1-1 Big 12) reeled off five-straight wins and took seven of the final eight matches to claim their first Big 12 win of the season. 
In the 141-pound match, #29 Gavin Drexler scored a four-point near fall and a three-point nearfall in the third period to come from behind and defeat Darren Green with a 9-6 decision. Then in the 149-pound match, Max Petersen scored the only takedown of the match in sudden victory to defeat Dayne Morton 4-1. Landen Johnson would then close the first half with a 9-4 win over Chaz Hallmark in the 157-pound match. Johnson had a takedown and four-point nearfall in the first period and then added a reversal in the win. Coming out of the break, Brendan Howes then defeated Drayden Morton with a four-point nearfall in the final seconds to win 4-0 at 165 pounds.
In the 174-pound match, Gaven Sax battled through a first period injury to score the first bonus-point decision of the night for the Bison, winning 8-0 over Justin Phillips. Sax had a reversal and a takedown and secured the riding time point in the second period.
Following a loss at 184 pounds that brought the Lancers to within one of the Bison at 16-15, Spencer Mooberry extended the lead in the 197-pound match and Devon Dawson secured the victory at heavyweight. Mooberry nearly had a fall as he cruised to a 13-7 win over Eli Sheeren. Bison Wrestling Tops Northern Colorado 27-14
FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State wrestling picked up a second-consecutive Big 12 win, defeating Northern Colorado 27-14 Sunday afternoon in Big 12 action at the Scheels Center.  
Northern Colorado (8-4, 1-3 Big 12) opened up an 8-0 lead after the first two matches, recording a tech fall at 125 pounds and a decision at 133 pounds. However, the Bison (3-6, 2-1 Big 12) reeled off four-straight bonus point wins and six of the final eight matches overall to claim their second-straight victory and third win overall in the last four minutes.  
In the 141-pound match, #29 Gavin Drexler started the winning run for NDSU with a major decision over Armando Garcia. Drexler recorded three takedowns in the first period, and added a fourth later in the match to win 14-3 with an escape point and riding time.  
Max Petersen and Landen Johnson then scored three takedowns each in major decision wins at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively. Petersen had two in the first period and one in the second as he won 11-2 over Kilian Schultz. Johnson had a takedown in each period, along with a three-point near fall in the second as he won 15-4 over Roman Cruz to give NDSU a 12-8 lead headed into the break.  
Coming out of the intermission, Brendan Howes picked up a takedown and then his fourth pin of the season at the 1:37 mark of the first period on Derek Matthews, giving the Bison a 10-point lead.  
Following a decision loss at 174 pounds, the Bison answered right back with a win by Adam Cherne at 184 pounds. After giving up an early takedown, Cherne scored one of his own for a 4-3 lead after one. South Dakota State wrapped up a successful opening weekend of Big 12 Conference wrestling duals with a flourish in defeating California Baptist, 39-3, Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena.  
The 10th-ranked Jackrabbits improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference duals in running their winning streak to five.  
Leading 17-3 through six matches, the Jackrabbits closed the dual with four consecutive bonus-point victories. Fourth-ranked Cade DeVos started the streak with a 23-4 technical fall over Justin Phillips in the 174-pound matchup. DeVos registered two takedowns in each of the three periods before ending the match with a four-point near-fall at the 6:09 mark.
At 184 pounds, redshirt freshman Bennett Berge needed only 46 seconds to pin the Lancers’ Nathan Haas for the first fall of the dual.
Tanner Sloan followed with a 17-1 technical fall against Eli Sheeran in the 197-pound bout. The victory by the fifth-ranked Sloan was his fifth in a row by tech fall.

Nittany Lions dominate Wolverines in 27-9 road win
ANN ABROR, Mich. – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team (5-0, 2-0 B1G) rolled over No. 5 Michigan (4-2, 2-2 B1G) in a Big Ten dual meet showdown on the road. Penn State won eight of ten bouts in a 27-9 win Friday night in a Big Ten Network national telecast from Ann Arbor, Mich. The Nittany Lions controlled the action throughout, forcing eleven stall warnings out of the home team while winning eight of ten matches.  
The dual began at 157. Sophomore Levi Haines, ranked No. 1 at 157, controlled the tempo and picked up a hard-fought 2-1 win over No. 9 Will Lewan, giving the Nittany Lions an early 3-0 lead.  Redshirt freshman Mitchell Mesenbrink, ranked No. 9 at 165, dominated No. 7 Cameron Amine in the next bout. Mesenbrink forced four stalls, had two takedowns and riding time, to roll to a convincing 12-1 major decision.  
With No. 1 Carter Starocci not competing at 174, senior Terrell Barraclough moved up from 165 for Penn State. Barraclough battled Griffith tough and nearly pulled off the upset. CORNHUSKERS TOP PURDUE, 27-14
Lincoln, Neb. – Behind three bonus-point victories, the Nebraska wrestling team grabbed its second-straight conference victory with the 27-14 victory over Purdue in front of 2,527 fans on Sunday afternoon.  With the win, the Huskers improved to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in dual competition, while Purdue dropped to 5-6 and 0-3 in Big Ten play. 
In his dual debut, Alan Koehler took on No. 2 Matt Ramos at 125. After the first three minutes, Koehler trailed Ramos 4-1. With an escape, in the second period, Koehler earned an escape to bring the score to 4-2. Ramos got the scoring going in the final period, grabbing the technical fall in 2:48. No. 19 Jacob Van Dee used a first-period takedown, a second-period reversal and the riding time point to secure the 133 win over Dustin Norris. Throughout the bout, Norris only managed two escapes.
Blake Cushing (141) grabbed his second-career dual win in a 7-5 decision over No. 32 Greyson Clark. With a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second period, Cushing jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Clark tallied a pair of escapes and a takedown, but Cushing got one more takedown to win the bout and put Nebraska in front, 6-5 in the team score.
Top-ranked Ridge Lovett dominated from start-to-finish at 149, pinning Marcos Polanco in 6:12. With a pair of takedowns, Lovett took the 6-1 advantage in the opening period. Continuing the momentum into the second period, Lovett recorded a reversal and two takedowns to increase his lead to 14-4, before grabbing the win by fall in the final minute.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (11-1, 3-0) earned its first road win in Big Ten Conference action Sunday with a 27-15 win at No. 17 Wisconsin (6-2, 0-1) in UW Field House. The Buckeyes fell behind early in Madison but won the next four matches to lead 16-6 at the break. The Badgers threatened but Ohio State won three of the final five matches to secure the win.

Five B1G Takeaways from the week in Big Ten (1/17/24)
The B1G Ten dual meet season is in full swing and things are heating up. Between new heavyweights making appearances, incredible atmospheres, and buzzer-beating takedowns, it’s already been an exciting time for fans. With that being said, let’s take a look at five moments from the past week that caught our eye.
Turley and Blockhus Claim Big Upsets
Later on in this article, you’ll hear about Iowa rolling to some dominating wins. But I want to draw some attention to the upset win at 157 when the Hawkeyes took on Minnesota. Michael Blockhus came back this season on a mission, and he’s had some missteps so far, but on Monday night he was ready to battle. Late in the bout as he trailed 4-2 to #2-ranked Jared Franek, the Bellator MMA fighter, collected the winning takedown and rideout to hand Franek his first loss of the season. 
On the East Coast, Rutgers All-American Jackson Turley brewed up his own upset du jour against undefeated Donnell Washington of Indiana, who came in ranked 9th at 174. But Turley went big as he defeated Washington by 15-0 technical. Turley threw a bag of tricks at Washington and everything hit. It was one of those moments we’ve seen from Turley where everything is clicking. If the same person shows up in March he will find himself on the podium once again. 
Penn State Flawlessly Flexes
Even for a squad as deadly as Penn State, a team that epitomizes track 2 of Dj Khaled’s Victory album, flawlessness is rare. However, it was accomplished last weekend when the Nittany Lions shutout Indiana 46-0. But it wasn’t just the shutout that I’m talking about, PSU didn’t give up a takedown throughout the entire dual. This weekend they face off against a high-powered Michigan team in what will surely be a must-watch dual. 
Iowa continues to roll
Admittedly, I didn’t know what to think of the Hawkeyes before the season began. Anderson, Gardner-Webb’s first Scuffle champ, hopes to make bigger news at the NCAAs

Jha’Quan Anderson did not believe he was good enough to wrestle Division I. A native of Conyers, Ga., the two-time state runner-up was in search of a Division II program to call home when Gardner-Webb head coach Daniel Elliott came knocking. “Coach Elliott had a lot of faith in me as a high school athlete,” Anderson recollected. “Personally, I didn’t have as much faith in myself as the coaches did. I took a risk and thought maybe I could come do something for myself here on the DI level because they believed in me so much.” 
Fast forward five seasons and Anderson has done that and more. Already a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, the fifth-year senior grad student flipped the calendar to 2024 with authority by capturing the prestigious Southern Scuffle crown at 184 pounds in Chattanooga’s McKenzie Arena on January 2. Entering the tournament as a No. 4 seed, Anderson exhibited maturity, discipline, and experience by coming out on top in three consecutive nail-biters to claim the championship.
Anderson defeated top-seeded Giuseppe Hoose of Oklahoma, 4-2, in the semis before a takedown in the waning seconds of regulation lifted the Bulldog over Clarion’s Cameron Pine, 4-2, in the finals. “It feels amazing, but I am trying to look past it because it is only January,” he said. “We still have the rest of the season to go, so I don’t want this to be the pinnacle of my season. It feels great when I bask in the moment, but we are still competing. There is not as much time as you would think to just sit back and enjoy it. I still want to be an All-American.”

Anderson also pointed out how, even in triumph, the Southern Scuffle exposed some of his past hindrances that he plans to focus on improving in preparation for attacking his postseason goals. “I have a tendency to wait to score until the end of matches,” Anderson reflected. “The skills are there. But, I just need to let it fly. I need to fire off attacks in the first, second and third periods. I believe I can score on anyone in the country if I get in on the leg. Coach Elliott always talks about output; I need more output from start to finish.” 
Anderson has his sights set on qualifying for his third NCAA Championships this March, but he plans to do it on his own this time without the oversight of the NCAA committee.
Ironically, his berths and birthdays overlapped in 2021 and 2023, as both his appearances at the NCAA Championships came via an at-large bid and the timing of the announcements made the news even more special. “In 2021 and 2023, I found out I was getting an at-large bid on my birthday both times,” Anderson proudly recalled. “There is no feeling like finding out you made it, and even though that was special, this year I want to win the SoCon title and qualify on my own.”
He believes his first two trips to Nationals provided him with invaluable experience and bolstered the confidence he has in himself and also the Gardner-Webb program as a whole. “Being at the NCAA tournament is amazing because you’re around the best coaches and wrestlers in the nation, and you realize you are among them. Once you make it, it is not far-fetched anymore. Even though we are a small school, we are on this level, and we belong here. We are the underdogs, but we belong there with everyone else.”
Further, while much talk is made in the world of collegiate athletics about resources, NIL, conferences, etc., and despite having already defeated numerous Power-5 opponents over his career, Anderson does not concern himself with those things. “I don’t even think about other schools,” he laughed. “When it comes to resources, we have everything we need to accomplish what we want to accomplish. Women’s Wrestling News – mid January

NWCA Releases first NCAA Women’s Coaches Dual Team Poll of the Season
MANHEIM, Pa. – For the first time since October, there is a new No. 1 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NCAA Women’s Wrestling Coaches’ Poll. North Central College returns to the top spot over the University of Iowa, which comes in second. King University stayed at third, while McKendree University jumped Colorado Mesa University to round out the top five.
North Central accumulated 125 points, with 17 ranking individuals taking over the top spot, while Iowa is the only other team with at least 100 points, coming in second with 103 points. The Hawkeyes have 14 individuals ranked. King stays at third as they are the third and final team, with at least ten individuals ranked with 13 to accumulate 87 points. McKendree leaped Colorado Mesa to take over the fourth spot with 60 points and eight ranked individuals. The Mavericks have five ranked individuals and 29 points. Simon Fraser University moved up again to sixth with 27 points and six individuals ranked. Sacred Heart University and Aurora University each have 19 points, as Sacred Heart has five ranked individuals, and Aurora has three. New Jersey City University and Lock Haven University round out the top 10 at ninth and 10th, respectively. Each has two ranked individuals, with New Jersey City accumulating 16 points and Lock Haven 14 points. There are three new top-ranked wrestlers, McKendree’s Shelby Moore at 123 pounds, King’s Victoria Baez-Dilone at 130 pounds, and North Central’s Alara Boyd at 143 pounds.

On Her Mind: Girls wrestling gaining popularity in Green Country
TULSA, Okla. — Girls wrestling — it’s the fastest-growing high school sport. We came to the first high school in the state to launch a program to find out why girls here love wrestling. Girls wrestling is exploding in popularity in Oklahoma. In just three years, local schools have gone from having one or two girls interested in the sport to having dozens of girls competing. I know when my son was little, there might have been one or two girls at wrestling meets, among dozens of boys — and they’d have to wrestle boys. Now, there are enough girls that want to do it that they can practice and compete against each other. We visited Union High School where the girls have won state two years in a row, and Claremore High School, which was the first high school in the state to add a girls wrestling program. I wanted to know what these girls love about it and what the athletes want you to know about the sport. 
“The guy that I was wrestling was 125 and he threw me over his head, he suplexed me,” said Cambry Suskey, freshman at Claremore High School. “There’s a learning curve and mine was just longer than others,” said Kortlynn Sansom, junior at Claremore High School. 
Cambrey spent years as an all-star cheerleader, and Kortlynn is a high school cheerleader. Now, both swapped cheer bows for singlets to wrestle for Claremore High School, the first school in the state to add a girls program. “I didn’t know how to coach a girl, I didn’t have a clue how I was going to do that,” said Chad Willard, Claremore High School Wrestling Director. 
Willard says he saw how many more girls were showing up at youth tournaments on the weekends. “I knew it was inevitable, it wasn’t because I was dying to start a women’s program, because I was busy enough as it was,” Willard said. “As soon as we did, us and Broken Arrow, Bixby and Union, it just exploded.”

Women’s Wrestling Continues Five Dual Streak with win over Dakota Wesleyan

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Sioux Falls Women’s Wrestling continues their five dual streak with a 24-20 win over Dakota Wesleyan tonight. Dakota Wesleyan was open at 101-, 109-, 116-, 123- and 191-pounds while USF was open at 116- and 170-pounds. 
At 130-pounds Teila Peters started the dual off with a 10-0 tech. fall in 1:51 over the Tigers Mady Sargent. Peters now sits 10-5 on the year. Mackenzie Armagost competed in an extra match against Sargent resulting in a 1:01 pin. Armagost is now 7-8 on the season. 
McKenna Hendrickson fell to Isabelle Camarillo, at 136-pounds, in a 5:45 pin. Hendrickson moves to 6-9 on the year. At 143-pounds, Ciana Grate fell to Hallie Stone in a 1:34 pin and currently sits at 6-5 on the year. Aliyah Villarreal was defeated by Olivia Smith in a 4:29 pin at 155-pounds. Villarreal is now 4-9 on the season. Ramos back at No. 1 at 125 pounds in WIN’s Rankings; Iowa moves up to No. 3 in TPI
NEWTON, Iowa — In what has been a revolving door this season at 125 pounds, where three different wrestlers have been ranked No. 1, Purdue’s Matt Ramos has returned as that weight’s top-ranked wrestler in WIN Magazine’s Jan. 15 rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
The Boilermaker junior, last year’s national runner-up and preseason No. 1 wrestler at 125, moved back into the top spot after Lock Haven’s Anthony Noto lost to Havard’s Diego Sotelo last weekend and fell to No. 3. Iowa’s Drake Ayala, who has won eight straight matches, is now rated No. 2 at 125 before his Jan. 15 meeting with Minnesota’s No. 7 Pat McKee and a Jan. 19 dual with Ramos.
Penn State remains the top-ranked team in both the dual rankings (4-0) and Tournament Power Index (129) as the Nittany Lions feature nine ranked wrestlers, including four No. 1-rated wrestlers: Levi Haines (157), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (Hwt). Penn State also had an additional wrestler join the rankings this week in 149-pound Tyler Kasak (13th).
There are 10 wrestlers who are new to this week’s rankings, including Iowa’s Zach Glazier, who upset Nebraska’s Big Ten champ Silas Allred last Friday, and is ranked No. 10. This addition to the individual ranking also moved Iowa from No. 6 to No. 3 in WIN’s TPI with 64.5 points; just four points behind No. 2 Missouri. 2023-24 NAIA Men’s Wrestling Coaches’ Top 20 – No. 4 (January 11)
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The newest NAIA Men’s Wrestling Coaches’ Top 20 sees a change at the top of the standings, as Life (Ga.) overtakes Grand View (Iowa) after the Running Eagles won the NWCA National Duals. Menlo (Calif.) remains third and Doane (Neb.) in fifth, while Campbellsville (Ky.) leaps into fourth position. Montana State-Northern moves into the rating after receiving votes last period.

  • The rating was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the eight conferences/groups.
  • Two days prior to the national rating, each qualifying group rater submits the top 10 individuals from each weight class in his conference into the system. NCAA DI Rankings Updated (1/16/2024)
We’ll start right off with 125 lbs, as usual. The previous #1 Anthony Noto fell to Diego Sotelo in dual action last week, which spurred a change at the top spot. Generally, I like to have some sort of a flow with the rankings from week-to-week, letting them build off each previous week. With a weight like 125 and a situation like we had, that wasn’t possible in determining the #1 ranked wrestler. It was more like starting from scratch. 
Measuring resumes (quality wins and losses), Drake Ayala stood out from the rest of the field. After last night’s win over Patrick McKee, Ayala now has wins over #6 Jore Volk, #7 Caleb Smith, #18 McKee (x2), #25 Kysen Terukina, #27 Eli Griffin, along with previously ranked Max Gallagher and Nick Babin. His only loss this year wasn’t a bad one, a one-point loss to #16 Brandon Kaylor. 
Matt Ramos has wins over #13 Dean Peterson, #17 Tanner Jordan, #21 Diego Sotelo, #26 Anthony Molton, #32 Dominic Mendez, #33 Ethan Berginc. Along with previously ranked Tristan Lujan and Nick Babin. His losses are to #7 Caleb Smith, #12 Nico Provo, and #22 Jakob Camacho plus the unofficial loss to high schooler Marcus Blaze. 
To either make things easier or more confusing, Ayala/Ramos are slated to meet Friday night.  In the non-125 lb news of the week, three ranked Ohio State wrestlers have been removed. Paddy Gallagher (157), Carson Kharchla (174), and Gavin Hoffman (184). All are expected out for an extended period of time, perhaps for the season. Those losses have greatly impacted their team tournament ranking. For now, the dual ranking dropped by a spot. NCAA wrestling award standings debut for the 2024 season
INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA has released updated standings for the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships. 
The inaugural NCAA Wrestling Awards were presented at the 2012 wrestling championships. The three awards, given in each division, honor the Most Dominant Wrestler as well as the student-athletes that have accumulated the most falls and the most technical falls throughout the course of the regular and postseasons.
For falls and tech falls to be counted for the awards they must come against opponents in the same division (i.e. Division II vs. Division II). Ties in the two categories are broken based on the aggregate time. Indiana’s 197-pounder Gabe Sollars currently paces Division I with 11 falls on the season. Newberry Men’s Wrestling Swat the Yellow Jackets
COLUMBIA, S.C.- Men’s wrestling dominate the mat against Allen University with a 34-17 win. The wolves add to their win streak and move to 5-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Another deceptive score, the wolves forfeited the 125 and 165 bout resulting in an unearned 12 points for the yellow jackets. The men were not about to let that ruin their night. Kicking off the night was the 133 Ib freshman Benjamin Guiliam who had an incredible 19-3 tech. fall moving the match score to 5-6. At the 149 class with a three point 6-2 win via decision was Zach Harrington moving the wolves closer to victory, 8-11. 
Earning the wolves first win via pin during tonights slate was 157 stand-out P.J. Wunderlich tallying the wolves six points to make the score 14-11 Newberry. 174 Ib Andrew Reed cruised by his competition in a 13-2 major decision win retaking the lead 18-17. Joining the major decision club was 184 Ib Jacoby Benjamin adding to the now 22-17 score with his 11-2 victory. Bellarmine Wrestling downs Presbyterian College on Friday night
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University wrestling team battled hard on Friday night to defeat Presbyterian College in front of an energetic home crowd at Knights Hall.  
In just its second home dual of the season, Bellarmine continued its winning ways, rolling over Presbyterian 40-9.
“I’m super grateful for all the fans that came out, especially with the inclement weather we had. The environment they created again was awesome,” said Bellarmine coach Ned Schuck. “The fans brought a ton of energy and the guys love wrestling in front of that.”
Sophomore Thadd Huff (285) earned the lone pin for the Knights in the final bout of the evening.
“It’s always nice to be able to cap of the night with a pin at heavyweight and Thadd has been one of our staples in terms of being able to bring that finish at the end of a dual so, that was really cool,” Shuck said.
Redshirt freshman Trayce Eckman (141) opened the meet with a 19-4 tech fall, the first of four such results. Redshirt sophomore Zac Cowan (147) ended his at 22-7, fellow redshirt freshman Grant O’Dell (165) at 15-0 and freshman Justin Hoffer (197) at 20-3.

Blue Hose Equals Highest-Ever Point Total for Single Dual, Dominates Truett McConnell at Templeton
CLINTON, S.C. – Continuing the all-time theme between the two programs (i.e. the Blue Hose winning via commanding fashion), the Presbyterian College men’s wrestling squad moved to 4-0 versus Truett McConnell on Sunday afternoon by taming the Bears 44-6. After dropping the first bout of ten, PC shook off the suboptimal start and promptly won the following six encounters to denote the program’s highest single-dual point total in the team’s history.

Blue Hose Stings Emory & Henry to Finish Off 4-0 Record at Home
CLINTON, S.C. – The 15th-ranked Presbyterian College women’s wrestling team celebrated a raucous Senior Night atmosphere with a one-sided dual victory against Emory & Henry on Friday evening to the tune of a 37-10 final difference, putting the finishing touches on a perfect 4-0 stance when competing at Templeton Gymnasium on the year.
Wrestling on their home turf for the first time since December, the Blue Hose closed the book on their dual slate in style by obtaining a W in 80 percent of the night’s encounters. Head coach Brian Vutianitis‘ roster utilized two pins and technical falls apiece to account for the 27-point tally and their eighth triumph in a one-on-one setting throughout the campaign. From here, Presby will settle in to tournament mode with their dual calendar now in the rearview mirror. ANDREWS’ WIN PUSHES HUSKERS PAST MINNESOTA
Minneapolis, Minn. – In a back-and-forth top 10 showdown, heavyweight Harley Andrews secured an upset victory to help the No. 6 Nebraska wrestling team earn the 19-14 win over No. 9 Minnesota Friday evening.  Action started at 125 as No. 7 Caleb Smith faced Minnesota’s No. 18 Patrick McKee in the dual’s first ranked bout of the night. McKee scored first with a takedown and a combined seven points of nearfall to take the 10-0 lead in the first period. Smith then scored a reversal in Period Two, but McKee held the momentum and Smith fell by tech fall, 18-2. 
At 133, Kyle Burwick made his Big Ten season debut as he wrestled No. 27 Tyler Wells to a scoreless first period. Burwick then got on the board first with an escape and held the 1-0 advantage with 2:00 to go. In Period Three, Burwick was awarded a stall point, Wells scored a takedown and Burwick earned the escape to tie the match and force overtime, 3-3. In sudden victory, Wells scored the takedown to win by decision, 6-3.  With the Big Red trailing 8-0, No. 8 Brock Hardy worked to get them back on track against No. 19 Vance VomBaur at 141. Hardy was aggressive in Period One, but the two were scoreless with 5 minutes remaining. Hardy then recorded NU’s first takedown of the night in the second period and after a pair of VomBaur escapes, held the 3-2 lead to start the final period. Hardy got the quick escape, added another takedown and secured the riding time point in the final period to earn the 8-3 decision. 
Up next, No. 1 Ridge Lovett took on Minnesota’s No. 13 Drew Roberts at 149. Lovett scored first with a takedown and got the rideout to end the first period with 1:41 of riding time. Lovett earned an escape to start Period Two and finished the period with another takedown to lead 7-0 with two minutes remaining. Chadron State Eagles defeat Orediggers for first time in five years
CHADRON, Neb. — The Chadron State College men’s wrestling team defeated Colorado School of Mines for the first time in five years on Friday night, winning 22-12 in the Nelson Physical Activity Center.
Chadron State was victorious at 125, 133, 141, 174, 184 and 285 to improve their record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Orediggers drop to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
A ranked matchup at 125 pounds started the dual between #7 Quade Smith, a junior from Layton, Utah and #17 Christian Lopez. Smith gained an early advantage with a takedown and four near fall points. Lopez ended the period with a first period escape.
The third and final period started with another Smith takedown before another Lopez escape, giving Smith an 11-2 major decision.
#2 Quen Campbell earned a victory at 133 pounds with a 9-3 decision. Campbell, a redshirt senior from Tifton, Georgia used one takedown, a reversal and four near fall points to win.
At 141 pounds, #17 Ethan Leake, a redshirt senior from Clovis, California, needed overtime to beat #8 Grayston DiBlasi. Knotted at one a piece heading to overtime, Leake scored a takedown with 30 seconds left in overtime 1 to earn the SV-1 4-1 victory.
The Eagles had a streak of three consecutive losses at 149, 157 and 165 pounds. The Orediggers three victories came by way of two decisions and one major decision.

Nebraska Football Star Nash Hutmacher Giving Husker Wrestling A Boost
Nebraska all-Big Ten defensive lineman Nash Hutmacher returned to the mat and dropped 45 pounds to give the Husker wrestling team some heavyweight help
The Nebraska wrestling program is already a Top-5 squad in the country, but the Huskers got an extra shot in the arm a couple weeks ago when football standout Nash Hutmacher took the mat for the first time since high school. In high school in South Dakota, Hutmacher went 166-0 and won four state titles. He pinned his final 73 opponents and was the top heavyweight recruit in the class of 2019, but he chose to pursue glory on the gridiron in college.
An honorable mention Big Ten selection at nose tackle as a junior, Hutmacher joined the wrestling team, with head football coach Matt Rhule’s approval, in early December weighing 330 pounds. Over the course of a month, “The Polar Bear” dropped 45 pounds and made the 285-pound heavyweight limit. He first took the mat for the Huskers on Jan. 6, winning his college debut via first-period pinfall over Wyoming’s Mason Ding.
In his next match, Hutmacher lost a 4-1 decision in a step-up in competition against Iowa’s Bradley Hill. Despite the setback, Nebraska coach Mark Manning has been impressed with Hutmacher from the start. “He’s real aggressive and gives great effort. The match that he lost against Iowa he gave great effort – he went for it and was the aggressor,” Manning said. “I’d say, strategically he got beat – he didn’t get outwrestled. I thought he fought like an animal. He really went out and did his best. I was really proud of him.”  With the addition of a potential future NFL draft pick and Husker fan favorite to the room, there are now more eyeballs on the team.
