MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – After nearly a two-week hiatus from the mat, (RV) Brewton-Parker Men’s Wrestling challenged fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference member Montreat (N.C.) in Gillis Gymnasium on Friday night.
The Barons (1-0, 1-0 AAC) opened conference action with a dual against the Cavaliers (0-3, 0-2 AAC), securing a 31-17 victory in front of a home crowd in Mount Vernon. “Great way to start off the season with a win in front of an exciting home crowd,” Director of Wrestling and Head Coach Tyler Smith mentioned. “Very proud of our guys’ effort tonight. Excited to get back to work and finish the semester strong.”

Five Things You Need To Know About D3 Wrestling This Season

Six national champions and more than 40 All-Americans are back in Division III, and the stage is set for another battle between the D3 power programs

The Division III wrestling season has gotten into full swing over the last two weekends. Six national champions return, four national runner-ups and more than 40 All-Americans return, which means the 2023-24 season is poised to be a wild, crazy and entertaining season that will feature twists at every turn.
The national championships will be held March 15-16 in La Crosse, Wisconsin at the La Crosse Convention Center. Flowrestling breaks down some of the storylines that will play out this season.

Team To Beat

Defending national champion Augsburg University is the easy choice here. Head coach Tony Valek’s team returns six All-Americans, including defending 141-pound national champion Sam Stuhl. Stuhl, a transfer from North Dakota State, won last year’s title after entering the championships in Roanoke, Va., unseeded. Tyler Kim is a three-time All-American and opens the season ranked #1 at heavyweight. Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann, another three-time All-American, is the preseason #1 at 184.
Cooper Willis at 165, Charlie Stuhl at 149 and Seth Goetzinger at 174 are the other returning All-Americans. Additionally, the Auggies return lineup veterans Derek Steele, Cade Willis, Parker Venz and Blake Jagodzinske. With that much experience and production returning, Augsburg is easily favored to win its 15th NCAA championship.

Top Contenders

Any conversation about the favorite to win the Division III crown that starts with Augsburg will always include Wartburg College. The Knights finished second to the Auggies last year, but just a half-point ahead of Baldwin Wallace, three ahead of North Central College and just 5.5 in front of Wisconsin-La Crosse. That was the top-five in 2023, but it would not be shocking if those five teams, perhaps in a different order, all reside in the top five in 2024. Wartburg returns a pair of national champions in Zane Mulder at 174 and Massoma Endene at 197. Joe Pins at 133 (2022) and Nathan Fuller at 165 give the Knights four returning All-Americans. Whom else will help the Knights make up the 40-point difference in La Crosse is yet to be determined, but head coach Eric Keller has a roster of nearly 70 to reload with. … story at … Flowrestling.org/Five-things-you-need-to-know-about-d3-wrestling-this-season

Robb ‘Full Steam Ahead’ After Life-Threatening Infection | Husker Insider

Nebraska’s Peyton Robb is back to being a title contender again after a rare skin infection threatened not only his wrestling career, but his life as well
For Nebraska’s Peyton Robb, this year is all about gratitude and unfinished business as he returns to the mat for his final season after a horrifying health scare.
In one of the biggest stories from last season’s NCAA Championships, Robb had to medically forfeit out of the tournament after the consolation semis as he came down with a rare skin infection that threatened not only his wrestling career, but life and limb as well.
A four-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American, Robb was putting together a stellar season when it was derailed late. He was undefeated up until a 3-1 loss to Levi Haines in sudden-victory in the Big Ten final. At NCAAs, he won his first three matches before a semifinal loss to Haines.
On the second day of NCAAs is when Robb noticed some pain in his shin, but he wrestled through it, downing Daniel Cardenas 6-4 in the quarters before his 5-3 semifinal loss to Haines. He then wrestled in Saturday’s consolation semis against Jared Franek, then of North Dakota State, dropping the match 3-1 in sudden-victory while extremely compromised from the infection that had him weakened and unable to keep anything down.
After that match with Franek, Robb was quickly taken to the hospital. He was diagnosed with streptococcal cellulitis, a bacterial infection. After receiving antibiotics and fluids through an IV, he returned to stand on the medal stand for his sixth-place finish.
Robb then had to endure an excruciating bus ride home and was later rushed to the emergency room in Lincoln where they found his heart rate too high and his blood pressure too low. The infection in his leg had caused sepsis in his blood, resulting in blood clots forming in his lungs.
After the doctors were able to stabilize his vitals, Robb went through a number of surgeries where they removed dying tissue as he was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis, a very rare infection that kills one in five people who get it. The doctors were forced to keep his enormous incisions open as they had to go in multiple times to remove any more dead tissue. “You saw all the emotions of difficult times — you saw the worry, you saw the grief, you saw the uncertainty, you saw at different stages slowly growing confidence that things are going to be fine,” said Husker athletic trainer Tyler Weeda, … story at … Flowrestling.org/Robb-full-steam-ahead-after-life-threatening-infection-husker-insider

Penn State wrestlers have near perfect night during NWCA All-Star Classic
Rec Hall is a venue where fans get to see Penn State’s stars shine. On Tuesday night, fans inside Rec Hall got to see some of college wrestling’s top athletes during the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic — and they weren’t disappointed. The Nittany Lions had Shayne Van Ness (149 pounds), Carter Starocci (174), Bernie Truax (184), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet all hit the mat as part of the 28 wrestlers that competed. The quintet went a combined 4-1 on the evening, while dazzling the pro-Penn State crowd. “It was real loud. It was a lot of fun. It got me excited,” Van Ness said. “It got me smiling. I love big crowds. It’s awesome. I think you’ll see that a lot more this year (smiling), whether it’s here or anywhere just because I’m enjoying what I do. I love it and there’s nothing to not smile about.” Brooks added: “It’s fun man. I haven’t wrestled in Rec Hall since Lock Haven last year because I took that partial season. It’s been over a year since I’ve been in Rec. It felt good to be back. It’s a different atmosphere, nothing matches it, in my opinion.” … story at … Centredaily.com/PSU-wrestling

The 5 biggest things we learned from the 2023 NWCA All-Star Classic
All-Stars shined bright on Tuesday night in State College, Pennsylvania as 30 athletes across 15 weights in men’s folkstyle and women’s freestyle took center stage for the NWCA All-Star Classic. Each bout had its own storyline, but here are five overall takeaways from these matches between standout top-10 wrestlers.
Penn State goes 4 for 5 to headline All-Star Classic
The No. 1 Nittany Lions put on a show for their home crowd, earning victories at 149 pounds from Shayne Van Ness and at 174, 197 and 285 pounds from Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Greg Kerkvliet, respectively, by bonus. This is a team that is not just expecting to win another NCAA title in March but to bury anyone that gets in its way.
Van Ness’ win over Arizona State’s Kyle Parco kicked off the Nittany Lions’ winning ways, as he topped the Sun Devil for the second time in his career, notching a 5-1 victory just six months after beating Parco 7-2 at NCAAs. Penn State’s Van Ness is currently ranked No. 2 in the country behind Nebraska’s Ridge Lovett, though Van Ness will get his shot at the 2022 NCAA finalist Lovett on Feb. 18 when the Huskers come to town. In the meantime, he’ll have matches against Lehigh, Hofstra, Oregon State and Indiana as well as Michigan, Michigan State, Maryland, Ohio State, Iowa and Rutgers, though his only ranked opponent among at least that first slate of teams is expected to be No. 8 Graham Rooks of the Hoosiers on January 5. Van Ness took seven losses this year, but none of those athletes who beat him — Yianni Diakomihalis,

Latona chose bottom in the second period and escaped before McGonagle could go over a minute of advantage time as McGonagle led 3-2 after two periods.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.
 – The No. 19 Lock Haven men’s wrestling team returned to action today (Sunday, Nov. 26) as the Bald Eagles hosted the 2023 Mat-Town Open I Tournament in Thomas Fieldhouse, and it was once again Wyatt Henson (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) who led the way for The Haven.

Stanford enters Top 25 for first time this season.
Manheim, Pennsylvania – Coming off a season-opening win over then-No. 21 Arizona State, Missouri jumped to No. 3 in the most recent NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
The Tigers drew over 3,200 fans to the Hearnes Center for their first dual of the season. Penn State, which has yet to wrestle a dual this season, remained the unanimous No. 1, while NC State (7-0) remained second. Trent Hidlay Runs Folkstyle/Freestyle Weekend Gauntlet | Wolfpack Insider
Two days after helping NC State win a dual against Army, Trent Hidlay secured a spot in the Olympic Trials by winning the Bill Farrell International
The NC State Wolfpack has been busy since their season opened on November 1. The Pack has started out a perfect 7-0 in duals, outscoring its foes 287-30. In those duals, NC State’s current 10 starters went a combined 48-3 in their matches. Starting the season at #3 in the preseason NWCA Coaches Poll, the Pack has moved up to #2 behind only Penn State.
While it has been a very busy three weeks for NC State — all the duals have been on the road and the first home dual is not until January — one Wolfpack wrestler will be looking forward to some well-deserved time off over the Thanksgiving weekend. “We’ve got a lot of miles in the last few weeks,” head coach Pat Popolizio said. “This month of November was really for getting everybody settled into their weight class and getting guys a lot of minutes on the mat. It was good, and it was healthy, but a couple of days away are much needed.”
“No doubt, everybody needs a bit of a break right now. It wasn’t all the matches, it was the travel the last few weekends.”

Folkstyle Thursday To Freestyle Saturday

It was a busy past week for Trent Hidlay.
“He was on a warrior-tour this past weekend, and he did a phenomenal job,” Popolizio said. “It’s not an easy task to switch styles in a matter of just a couple of days. His results just speak to the level that he is at right now.”

#5 Daniel Zepeda Commits To NC State, Embraces Huge Junior Year Challenge
Daniel Zepeda, the #5 commit in the class of 2025, has committed to NC State before competing in one of the nation’s toughest high school weight classes
Daniel Zepeda, the #5 recruit in the class of 2025, has made his college commitment. The Gilroy, California middleweight will be heading to NC State after finishing his high school career in 2025. Zepeda’s college commitment isn’t the only decision he’s made though, he’s planning to move up to 150 lbs for his junior season to enter a CIF bracket that could be the toughest high school weight in the country.
Zepeda is a highly coveted recruit. He followed up a Fargo finals performance this summer with a Who’s Number One victory over Bo Bassett at 138 lbs this fall. He won a state title in the ever-challenging single-class California State Championships this spring as well.
