NCAA DI Rankings Updated (2/18/2025)
You had to know that the final few weeks of the collegiate season were going to be eventful! There were just too many good matchups for the status quo to run into March. On the second to last Friday of the regular season, we saw another #1 fall from the ranks of the unbeaten. For the second straight year, Beau Bartlett knocked off Jesse Mendez in a dual meet. The two would meet in the Big Ten and NCAA finals. Time will tell if that’s the case again. With Mendez’s loss, we had to make some changes at the top of 141 lbs. Bartlett remains unbeaten and rose from number three to number one. Mendez has a win over Bartlett in the All-Star Classic and has the Vegas title, wins over four others in the top ten and three others in the top 15. Not that we really use it as a metric in these rankings, but Mendez had the best RPI in this weight and it’s easy to see why. He gets the number two and Andrew Alirez slides down to three. Though he’s unbeaten, Alirez’s only matches against top 16 opponents are #9 CJ Composto and #16 Josh Edmond. A similar adjustment was made at 197 lbs. Manheim, Pennsylvania – The final week of dual meet action will feature a clash between two of wrestling’s powerhouses, while the nation’s top-ranked team looks to extend its historic win streak.
Penn State improved to 14-0 with weekend victories over No. 8 Ohio State (27-13) and No. 13 Illinois (39-9), pushing its win streak to 70 straight duals, a new Big Ten record. Second-ranked Oklahoma State (13-0) heads north to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a showdown with third-ranked Iowa (13-1) in what will be the final dual meet of the Division I men’s wrestling regular season. Iowa swept a pair of weekend opponents, defeating No. 6 Minnesota (23-11) and Northwestern (37-3). The top 10 teams remained unchanged heading into the final week. Fourth-ranked Northern Iowa set a McLeod Center attendance record in a spirited 26-10 win over then-No. 14 Iowa State on Sunday. The 7,348 fans in attendance marked the largest crowd in the venue’s history, surpassing the 7,332 who watched UNI’s men’s basketball team host Illinois State 15 years ago.
Iowa State did pick up one ranked win over the weekend. The Cyclones beat then-No. 11 South Dakota State 20-15 on Friday. Fifth-ranked Nebraska (10-3) dominated then-No. 21 Indiana (39-2), while No. 7 NC State defeated No. 17 Stanford (27-13) to set up a season-ending dual against rival Virginia Tech. For Morgan State wrestling coach, legacy of winning Olympic gold ‘goes far and wide’
In 1988, Kenny Monday became the Games’ first Black wrestling champion
When Morgan State University wrestling head coach Kenny Monday was just a 10-year-old boy watching the 1972 Olympics from his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he decided he would become the world’s best wrestler and win his own gold medal. Sixteen years later, he would make history at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, as the first Black wrestler to do just that. “I think we [Team USA] had maybe three gold medalists that year [1972], Dan Gable, Wayne Wells and Ben Peterson. … I kind of dialed in and watched those guys,” Monday said. “Man, that was the first time that I realized that the Olympic gold was the pinnacle of the sport of wrestling because there’s no professional league. So once I realized that [I thought], ‘Man, that’s what I want to be.’”
Monday was introduced to wrestling at age 6 by his two older brothers. His early involvement in an after-school YMCA wrestling program blossomed into a career that would include two Olympic appearances, gold and silver medals, and a chance to lead the first Division I wrestling program at a historically Black college or university and give back to the next generation of Black wrestlers.

Historically Black colleges capitalize on growing interest by adding sport optionsRead now
National Wrestling Hall of Famer Charles “Charlie” Shivers was the sports director at the Y in Monday’s neighborhood and led the wrestling program the Monday brothers participated in. As the smallest member of the team, Monday initially struggled but learned foundational wrestling techniques with Shivers’ help. “I was the smallest and youngest kid when I started wrestling on the team, so I couldn’t beat anyone on the team. I was getting whooped every day. But it was really a great beginning because my coach is like, ‘Man, just don’t quit. Just keep coming back. Don’t quit.’ … And I got better as I went,” Monday said.
He eventually advanced out of the YMCA and moved on to different wrestling programs. He went undefeated in high school with a record of 140-0-1 and attracted interest from many major colleges. However, as a Tulsa native, his decision came down to the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University, and he chose State.
Monday posted a record of 121-12-2 at Oklahoma State and won the NCAA title in 1984. After graduating, he competed in the 1984 Olympic trials, hoping to secure the singular spot for his weight class, but came in fifth place. “1985, ’86, ’87 were building years. Those were the years that I really, really honed my craft and really got to the level to where I felt like I could compete,” Monday said.
After Monday made the 1988 Olympic team for the Seoul Games, three-time world champion Leroy Kemp, a Black wrestler who was set to compete in the 1980 Moscow Olympics before the U.S. boycott, served as a mentor and friend. “I was poised to be the first Black Olympic champion in 1980,” Kemp said. “Then when that didn’t happen in ’84, the only other person that I wanted to have the distinction and honor was Kenny Monday. … It was like he was me. I got to live vicariously through him.” … more at … https://andscape.com/features/for-morgan-state-wrestling-coach-legacy-of-winning-olympic-gold-goes-far-and-wide/

Louisianna HSAA wrestling tourney will make history, other dynamics add some mystery
History will be made when girls competitors step on the mats for the first time at the LHSAA state wrestling tournament Friday morning. Who makes history by garnering championship trophies and claiming top individual honors? That won’t be known until Saturday night when the two-day event at Bossier City’s Brookshire Grocery Arena ends. Plenty of possibilities exist, including a bid by Baton Rouge High to become the first girls champion sanctioned by the LHSAA. The Bulldogs enter the meet with competitors in 11 of the 12 weight class and multiple competitors seeded among the top three. “Having numbers to fill 11 weight class is an advantage,” BRHS coach Paige Russell said. “The only other team with 11 girls this year is Chalmette. “That does not guarantee anything. You still have to go out and perform round after round to score points. We plan to take it one round and one match at a time.”
Competition begins 9:30 a.m. Friday. Girls high school wrestling participation surges in Wisconsin as opportunities grow
In its fourth year as a championship sport, girls wrestling has grown from just a few hundred wrestlers to nearly 2,000 in Wisconsin.
BOSCOBEL, Wis. — The sport of girls wrestling in Wisconsin has seen a rapid increase in the number of students participating across the state.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, girls had to wrestle boys to take part in conference or state tournaments, as there wasn’t a standalone girls event for them to compete in. As a result, only a few hundred girls took up wrestling as a varsity sport. According to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, or WIAA, 227 girls wrestled in 2017-18. Coaches and administrators saw an opportunity for growth in the sport, however, as other states began sanctioning girls wrestling. Wisconsin, which has been slower to adopt changes to high school sports than other states — multiple measures to add a shot clock to basketball, or name, image, and likeness rules, as two recent examples, have been voted down despite neighboring states adopting those policies — also lagged behind other states in adding girls wrestling as a sport. Girls wrestling was sanctioned in 2021-22, … more … https://civicmedia.us/news/2025/2/10/girls-high-school-wrestling-participation-surges-in-wisconsin-as-opportunities-grow

NCAA D1 Wrestling Week 16 Roundup: Is It State or States?
The world’s finest collection of noteworthy happenings from the 16th week of the 2024-25 NCAA D1 wrestling season.
Welcome to the recap of the penultimate regular season week of collegiate wrestling, in which we will settle the age-old wrestling debate of what to call the end-of-the-year high school championships: ‘state’ or ‘states”? Box Scores | Rankings | Last Week’s Roundup
As winter gives way to spring we approach the end of the road for so many teenage wrestlers. Around this time, high school gyms and arenas are full up with postseason tournaments. In some parts of the country, this process ends with high schoolers winning ‘state’. In other parts, they say they won ‘states’. That minor difference of one letter is still capable of igniting a firestorm in the social media comment sections of the wrestling community. Which is the correct way to say it? Keep reading and I will tell you. But first, a thorough recap of all the noteworthy happenings of the 2024-25 NCAA D1 wrestling season! The Dual of the Century of the Week

#2 Iowa vs. #3 Oklahoma State dual set; 2023 champ Alirez new No. 1 at 141
NEWTON, Iowa — Heading into the final major dual-meet weekend of the 2024-25 season, all eyes will be on the star-studded matchup between the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes and the undefeated No. 3 Oklahoma State Cowboys on Sunday, Feb. 23 in Iowa City. The top-three teams in each poll remained the same as last week, with Iowa and Oklahoma State tabbed as No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in each poll, following top-ranked Penn State. WIN’s Tournament Power Index compiles a point total with each team’s ranked wrestlers similar to NCAA tournament scoring, whereas the Dual Rankings rates teams based on full line-ups. The following is a breakdown of those individual TPI points per ranking: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by one and a half points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and one point for those ranked 17-20. The clash between Iowa and Oklahoma State will feature 19 individually ranked wrestlers of the possible 20 lineup slots and will presumably boast four matchups of wrestlers ranked within the top 10 (165, 174, 184 and 197). The only other clashes between Top-20 dual-meet teams slated to take place this weekend are dual meets between No. 8 NC State at No. 11 Virginia Tech and No. 16 Stanford vs. No. 18 North Carolina, both on Friday, Feb. 21. … more at … https://www.win-magazine.com/2025/02/17/2-iowa-vs-3-oklahoma-state-dual-set-2023-champ-alirez-new-no-1-at-141/

NCAA DI Rankings Updated (2/11/2025)
This edition of the national rankings features more movement in the top ten than many of its predecessors. At 133 lbs, we had a significant jump from Braxton Brown who moved from #11 to #6. Brown defeated the returning Big Ten champion and now only has losses to the second (Romney) and fourth (Byrd) ranked 133 lbers.
At 149 lbs, Ethan Stiles continues his meteoric rise with his first career top-ten ranking. Stiles started the season at 157 lbs and showed some promise, but he’s been lights-out at 149 lbs. Over the last three weeks, Stiles has picked up wins over #9 (Lamer) #10 (Abas), and #13 (Williams). All-330 Projections (February 2025)
The All-330 projections are back for February of 2025. The All-330 is a series of educated guesses on who will be the 330 wrestlers who make the trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to compete at the 2025 NCAA Championships. So, how are these different than the national rankings, which go down to #33? There’s a little bit of guesswork, projection, and opinion that goes into these, which is generally frowned upon with rankings. In some cases, we think a particular wrestler is poised for a big last couple of weeks and conference tournament (or not-so-big).
Another factor for these is conference allocations. Right now we can just speculate allocations for each conference and weight, but you can get an idea of how many each league will get based on rankings. For instance, in a Big Ten weight class … more at … Intermatwrestle.com
