Oklahoma State Cowboys Rout No. 22 West Virginia, 30-12

STILLWATER – The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 22 West Virginia, 30-12, on Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena to improve to 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in Big 12 duals. West Virginia dropped to 8-4 on the year with the loss.
With the 30-12 victory, the Pokes reached the 30-point mark for the ninth straight dual, good for the second-longest streak to begin a season in program history (first 10 in 1987-88). The performance was propelled by five bonus-point wins, bringing OSU’s season bonus rate up to 48.3%. That mark would be the highest in program history if the season ended today. In addition, 8,257 fans piled into Gallagher-Iba Arena to set the venue’s highest attendance of the season and raise its season average to 7,073. “We found ourselves in some tough matches tonight,” head coach David Taylor said. “It’s good for our team to experience that. I think that when you wrestle for a program like Oklahoma State, you are going to get the best of everybody.”
Jett Strickenberger gave the Mountaineers an early lead with a pin of Troy Spratley at 125 pounds, but Oklahoma State bounced back quickly as Cael Hughes secured a 9-6 win over Tommy Maddox in sudden victory and improved his record to 8-0. Tagen Jamison followed suit at 141 pounds as he majored No. 29 Jordan Titus, 14-4, through a takedown in the match’s final second. The win bumped Jamison’s record to 15-1 and was his 11th bonus-point effort of the season, tied for most on the team.
West Virginia took the lead right back as Sam Hillegas defeated Cutter Sheets in a tight 8-6 bout. At 157 pounds, Caleb Fish sent the Cowboys into intermission with an 11-9 lead thanks to a 16-3 major decision over Sasha Gavronsky. GOLDEN, Colo. – Cal Poly Humboldt wrestling delivered a stunning performance on Friday night, toppling No. 16-ranked Colorado School of Mines, 25-19, in a dual that came down to the final match in Golden, Colorado. The victory was sealed in dramatic fashion by heavyweight Carson Hatch, whose dominant performance closed out the night and gave Cal Poly Humboldt their second straight victory.
The Lumberjacks opened the dual with four consecutive victories, setting the tone against the nationally ranked Orediggers. Caleb Tatad kickstarted the night with a hard-fought 7-5 decision over Alexander Sweeney at 125 pounds. Isaiah Miller followed with a commanding pin of Elliot Kim at 133 pounds, recording the fall at the 3:00 mark to energize the Humboldt bench.
Momentum continued to swing in Humboldt’s favor as Nathan Aguilar and Jayson Victoria delivered back-to-back pins at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Aguilar dispatched Cole O’Brien in 3:23, while Victoria needed just 2:18 to secure his fall against Yahir Chairez-Salazar, giving Humboldt a commanding 21-0 lead.

Wyoming Wrestling Rallies for 19-17 Victory at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Oregon (1/19/25) – The University of Wyoming wrestling team has made a recent habit of rallying for dual wins. The Pokes did it a couple times at the NWCA Dual Meet National Championships a week ago and did it again Sunday afternoon at Oregon State.
The Cowboys won three of the final five bouts against the Beavers with No. 11 Joey Novak (197) earning the most important one. He logged a pin, and the crucial bonus points helped secure the 19-17 dual victory. “Joey’s pin was the difference,” head coach Mark Branch said. “There’s certainly some negatives and some positives from this one. It was a good team victory.”
The win pushes Wyoming to 6-5 on the season. Oregon State falls to 1-5. The victory also snapped the Beavers’ three-match win streak in the series. Novak’s third-period pin of Vaun Halstead vaulted Wyoming ahead 19-14. The late dual push was also helped by Cooper Voorhees (165) and Eddie Neitenbach (184) who registered big wins.
Voorhees defeated Murphy Menke via decision, 8-3. Neitenbach recorded a major decision win over TJ McDonnell, 15-5. “Hats off to Eddie,” Branch said. “This is the first time he’s been back since early December and his shape is way off and to be able to secure a bonus-point win speaks to his drive, competitiveness and willpower.”
Oregon State began the dual with a pair of wins. No. 9 Maximo Renteria defeated … more at … https://gowyo.com/news/2025/1/19/wrestling-rallies-for-19-17-victory-at-oregon-state.aspx

ACC Wrestling Results – mid Jan.

ACC Week One Recap
If week one of ACC duals showed us anything, it is that we should buckle up because the next six weeks are going to be bonkers. We saw two upsets – based on Intermat Dual Rankings – and a shutout for the six teams in action, while UVA made the most of the off week.
North Carolina had a statement win at home over a top-10 Hokies team. The Tar Heels were propelled by upset wins from Spencer Moore, Josh Ogunsanya, and a huge Gavin Kane pin over TJ Stewart to notch their first win over Virginia Tech in five years. North Carolina did an impressive job of winning the tight bouts; three of their five wins were within a one-takedown score, with two of those coming in sudden victory. Bonus points from the Kane pin and a Lachlan McNeil tech fall proved huge. The Hokies will look to use this week off of conference competition to heal up and return with a full lineup against Duke in two weeks; they were without #12 Connor McGonagle and #1 Caleb Henson in Chapel Hill.
Not a lot to say about Duke’s trip to NC State. The Wolfpack took care of business and won nine of 10 bouts by bonus points including six tech falls and one pin. Louie Gill filled in at 125 for Vincent Robinson and put on an impressive display; Tyler Tracy got the start at 141 and looked strong. Robinson made his return to the lineup on Monday against Oklahoma State, getting an upset win over #2 Troy Spratley, in what otherwise was a dual the Wolfpack would like to forget. Though the dual was much closer than the scoreboard indicated, the Cowboys reeled off nine straight wins … more at … https://intermatwrestle.com/articles.html/college/acc/acc-week-one-recap-r99924/

Jason Moorman Accepts Tarleton State Head Women’s Role

Jason Moorman has been hired as the new Tarleton State head women’s wrestling coach after leading King University to four national team championships.
It didn’t take Jason Moorman long to find a new job after his surprise departure from King University. Moorman has landed in Stephenville, Texas, as the new head women’s wrestling coach for Tarleton State University.
This is a promising move for Moorman and women’s wrestling. Tarleton State is on the verge of becoming an NCAA Division I women’s wrestling program. He will be the club coach until the program is officially sanctioned.
Delaware State, Iowa, Lindenwood, Presbyterian, and Sacred Heart are D1 colleges that offer women’s wrestling. Tarleton State could be six.
“I think it’s an amazing opportunity and I’m extremely grateful,” Moorman said. “Pushing this across the line and getting a D1 program is what Texas needs and what women’s wrestling needs. I’m excited to be a part of making that happen.  “Thank you to Allan Rodger, Steve Silver, Grant Leeth, James Hurley, and the Texas Wrestling Federation. Something special is happening here. Women’s wrestling needs this. Texas wrestling needs this.”
Moorman is arguably the country’s most successful women’s college wrestling coach after serving at King from the 2009-10 season until his exit on October 18, 2024.
He led the Tornado to a 1-9 record during its inaugural season before building a national powerhouse. … more at … https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/13475685-jason-moorman-accepts-tarleton-state-head-womens-role

Oklahoma State Wrestling on the Verge of Hitting Historical Attendance Mark

Oklahoma State looks to be on track to hit a record historical season average for wrestling attendance this year.
Last year the Cowboys had incredible attendance. I dug into the numbers then and believe it to be the highest average in the history of the “new” Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oklahoma State “Raised the Roof” on old Gallagher in 2001 and opened the new arena in the middle of that season. Since then, the highest recorded average was last year at 5,871. This year, Oklahoma State is on pace to crush that average based on their reported numbers.

Ohio State All-American Sasso descents to 157 pounds, splits weekend matches
One of the biggest, most inspiring storylines this season in college wrestling has been the return of Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso, a two-time NCAA finalist who survived a shooting in the fall of 2024 and is now healthy and back on the mat for his final season. Sasso, who wrestled most of his career at 149 pounds, started the year up at 165 pounds, has officially made the descent down to 157 pounds where he finished as the runner-up at the Franklin & Marshall Open to NC State’s Jackson Arrington by fall and notched a key win against Rutgers’ Conner Harer 3-2.
Sasso’s weight class move shakes up the Buckeye lineup a little bit as well but puts him back down at a weight closer to his prime competition weight earlier in his career. In the Buckeyes’ two duals this weekend, Ohio State’s national qualifier Paddy Gallagher and Sasso split time at 157 pounds, with Gallagher competing the weight against the Illini on Saturday while Sasso competed in the Franklin & Marshall Open before the veteran took over the weight against Rutgers. Gallagher dropped his match against Illinois’ Jason Kraisser 16-9, but the Buckeyes still won the dual 24-9. The Rutgers dual was much dicier.
Rutgers’ Dean Peterson and Dylan Shawver pulled off top-15 upsets against Ohio State’s Brendan McCrone and Nic Bouzakis to open the day at 125 and 133 pounds before NCAA champion Jesse Mendez, All-American Dylan D’Emilio and Sasso notched their wins. … more at … https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2025-01-13/7-key-storylines-jam-packed-weekend-college-wrestling

NCAA D1 Wrestling Week 11 Roundup: Duals Are The Way

The world’s finest collection of noteworthy happenings from the 11th week of the 2024-25 NCAA D1 wrestling season.
Dual season is in full swing as the 2024-25 NCAA D1 wrestling season trudges along! And we’re here to document all the noteworthy happenings from the 11th week of the season!
Box Scores | Rankings | Last Week’s Roundup
The biggest wrestling event this weekend was the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals. This wrestling extravaganza, hosted by Northern Iowa in the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, features the unofficial dual meet championship tournaments at multiple divisional levels.
It is the pinnacle of the dual meet season for the NAIA and NCAA D2 and D3 men’s levels. Ditto for the NAIA and NCAA women’s tournaments. The event used to feature a robust NCAA D1 men’s tournament, however, the number of top teams interested in participating began to dwindle, and then not long ago that portion of the program was dropped entirely.
But guess what? It looks like Division 1 is back on the menu!
14 programs from ‘non-power’ conferences participated (not including affiliates, so no programs whose football and basketball teams are in the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, ACC or Pac-12). Some would classify the participating programs as ‘mid-majors’, but I wouldn’t. Especially not within earshot of UNI head coach Dough Schwab. … more at … https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/13467368-ncaa-d1-wrestling-week-11-roundup-duals-are-the-way

Illinois’ Byrd New No. 1 at 133 in WIN’s Jan. 13 Rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — Lucas Byrd of Illinois has taken over the top spot at 133 pounds in WIN Magazine’s Jan. 13 national rankings presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
Byrd, a senior, moved up from the No. 2 spot after the previous No. 1-ranked wrestler at 133 — Ryan Crookham of Lehigh — suffered an injury last weekend. A school spokesperson said the Mountain Hawk would miss the upcoming dual with Navy and was unsure how long Crookham would be out of action. This new ranking now sets up an upcoming battle between Byrd and Iowa’s No. 2 Drake Ayala when the Big Ten teams meet this Friday in Iowa City, where Iowa — ranked No. 2 in WIN’s Dual-Team rankings and No. 3 in WIN’s Tournament Power Index — will entertain the Illini, which ranks No. 12 in the dual rankings and No. 7 in WIN’s TPI.
Penn State remains the top-ranked team in both team rankings and features three top-ranked wrestlers: Tyler Kasak (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) and Carter Starocci. Oklahoma State, scheduled to wrestle Monday night against NC State, is ranked No. 3 in dual competition and No. 2 in WIN’s TPI.
WIN’s TPI projects where teams are expected to place in this season’s NCAA Championships in March, based on individual rankings at this point in the season. The following is a breakdown of those individual TPI points per ranking: 20 for 1st, … more at … https://www.win-magazine.com/2025/01/13/illinois-byrd-new-no-1-at-133-in-wins-jan-13-rankings/
