Freshman Cody Kirk Making Early Impact For Davidson Wrestling
Freshman Cody Kirk, who reached the finals of his first two college tournaments, has big goals for Davidson wrestling.
Cody Kirk is well aware that Davidson College has only featured 11 Southern Conference champions and sent only seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in the 87-year history of Wildcat wrestling, according to the school records.
The 184-pound true freshman is also aware that any national success by a Davidson wrestler — something Kirk did early this season when he placed first and second, respectively in the “Fresh-Soph” divisions of the Southeast Open and Michigan State Open in November — could put undue pressure on such a wrestler to become the latest face of Davidson wrestling.
So, is it fair to place such expectations on Kirk, a native of Pike Road, Ala., this early in his career? “I don’t feel any pressure,” said Kirk in a matter-of-fact tone. “Ever since I was a kid, I loved to roll around and wrestle. I would say it came pretty naturally to me. I found the sport in sixth grade and ever since then, I’ve loved wrestling.”
And the sport has done well for Kirk, a four-time Alabama state finalist, who earned titles as both a junior and senior for his high school that sits 20 miles east of Montgomery and 100 miles southeast of Birmingham. … more at … https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/14793331-freshman-cody-kirk-making-early-impact-for-davidson-wrestling

Quade Smith Wins RMAC Wrestler of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Redshirt senior Quade Smith earned the first RMAC Men’s Wrestling Athlete of the Week award of the 2025-26 season Tuesday after his 5-0 start to the year at the DWU Open.
Smith took home the win in the 125-pound bracket at the event hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota this past Saturday. It was a triumphant return to competition for Smith, who took a redshirt year in 2024-25 after three years as the Eagles’ 125-pound starter prior to that.
Smith, ranked No. 14 in the NWCA’s national 125-pound rankings, drew a tough first-round opponent in No. 13 Sloan Johannsen of Northern State, but got past the NSU wrestler by a 14-7 decision, taking a 6-1 lead after one period and recording a nearfall in the second.
Smith rolled through the bracket’s middle rounds, pinning his next two opponents (Jamestown’s Mario Fernandez and Augustana’s Carter Katherman), then collecting a semifinal major decision win over MSU Moorhead’s Clayson Mele by a 12-2 score. In the final, Smith earned a shutout win against UMary’s Mason Gutenberger, prevailing 4-0 with a first-period takedown and a second-period escape. Pins Help Eagle WWR Out-Dual Dickinson State
CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State earned the maximum five points in all five of its victories to emerge with a 26-22 dual victory over Dickinson State, the No. 19-ranked NAIA program, in CSC’s dual opener and home opener Thursday night at the Chicoine Center.
After a forfeit win for Brianna Vollendroff at 103 pounds, the Eagles received pins from Rylee Balcazar (110 pounds), Adrianna Lopez (117), Desza Munson (145) and Maria Arellano to rack up 25 points. While Dickinson State won five of the dual’s 10 matches, the Blue Hawks earned less than the maximum in two of their victories, giving CSC a winning margin.
It is the first career dual win in his first attempt as a head coach for Sammy de Seriere and gets CSC off to a positive start after the Eagles were only 1-6 in duals a year ago, including 1-5 at the Chicoine Center. The Eagles jumped out to a 15-0 lead. After Vollendroff won uncontested, Balcazar (ranked No. 9 in the NCAA national rankings) avenged a loss to Dickinson’s Jenna Gerhardt (NAIA No. 10) from last Saturday’s Battle of the Rockies Open, pinning Gerhart at 5:03 in the match. Balcazar was in control, leading 7-0 at the time of the pin.
Adrianna Lopez backed up her impressive run through the consolation bracket last Saturday with her first dual win as an Eagle. Desza Munson Named Women’s Wrestler of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a scorching start to the season that included a dual win and a tournament win, 145-pound redshirt freshman Desza Munson has been named the RMAC Women’s Wrestler of the Week.
Munson went an unbeaten 4-0 during this past week’s action, including three pins. It is the first career weekly honor for Munson in just her second week of competition for Chadron State. Munson’s honor also completes a department weekly sweep after sophomore Hunter Jacobsen won the RMAC Men’s Wrestler of the Week honor.
Munson began her week with a home dual pin against Dickinson State’s Paisley Jaeger in 1:48, which loomed large in CSC’s 26-22 dual victory. Then, at the Colby Dust Bowls Open, Munson won three consecutive matches to take down the 145-pound bracket and become the first Eagle women’s wrestler with a tournament championship this season.
Munson grew more dominant as the tournament went along, beating Murray State’s Adrianna Chronister via a 10-6 decision in the first round before a semifinal pin in 3:21 against William Jewell’s McKinzie Ross and another fall in just 1:07 over Fort Hays State’s Amanda Jaeger in the final.
A redshirt freshman from Commerce City, Colorado, Munson has stepped into the 145-pound slot in CSC’s lineup vacated by Karstin Hollen, the only departed senior from last year’s RMAC and regional lineup for Chadron State. Munson went 2-2 at the season-opening Battle of the Rockies tournament and is now … more at … https://chadroneagles.com/news/2025/11/18/womens-wrestling-desza-munson-named-womens-wrestler-of-the-week.aspx

Hunter Jacobsen Named Men’s RMAC Wrestler of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the second straight week to open the 2025-26, a Chadron State wrestler has taken home the RMAC Men’s Wrestler of the Week award with 133-pounder Hunter Jacobsen earning the weekly honor from the league office on Tuesday.
Jacobsen, who joins last week’s honoree and 125-pounder Quade Smith as Eagles to win the RMAC award this season, went 2-0 across a pair of dominant dual victory while the Eagle did not allow a point as a team. It is the first career RMAC award for Jacobsen, a sophomore from Lincoln, Nebraska and Waverly High School. Jacobsen’s award is part of a weekly department sweep after redshirt freshman Desza Munson won the women’s weekly honor.
In two matches last weekend, Jacobsen pinned Otero’s Robert Ortiz in just 1:37 before recording a 19-2 tech fall win over Fort Hays State’s Jett Schwartz. Both victories early in the dual created momentum that Jacobsen’s teammates were able to maintain, as Chadron State earned a 54-0 victory over Otero and a 40-0 win over Fort Hays State. … more at … https://chadroneagles.com/news/2025/11/18/mens-wrestling-hunter-jacobsen-named-mens-rmac-wrestler-of-the-week.aspx

Recapping the SoCon (11/19/2025)
The past few weeks have been full of SoCon action – tournaments, dual meets, and our first conference matchup on a battleship. Most of the conference found themselves at the Southeast Open, with top placements including Thomas Snipes (165, CIT) and Beau Lewis (174, VMI) earning gold in the Open and Freshman/Sophomore divisions, and Jeremiah Price (157, ASU) placing second in the Open division. At the Michigan State Open, Cody Kirk (184, DAV) also placed second in the Freshman/Sophomore division. This past weekend the Throwdown on the Yorktown II took place. Campbell dropped a 32-6 dual to #2-ranked DII Lander, with Logan Heil (133) and Pablo Macias (157) winning by decision. Anthony Ferrari (165) and Conor Maslanek (197) earned ranked wins over Penn’s #32 Sean Seefeldt and #27 Martin Cosgrove. The Camels faced off against the Presbyterian Blue Hose for their first conference duals of the season. The dual came down to the heavyweight bout – Presbyterian’s Morvens Saint Jean defeated Campbell’s Brycen Arthur, concluding the dual at 21-19. *Presbyterian deducted one team point due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
The Citadel faced off against #30 Maryland and the Air Force Academy. Jacob Silka (157) and Thomas Snipes (165) were key contributors in both duals, winning both matches by decision. Ultimately, Bulldogs lost both duals – 23-12 against Air Force, and 24-9 against Maryland.
Gardner-Webb split their duals between #30 Maryland and Air Force. The Runnin’ Bulldogs bested the Falcons 20-18, with Joseph Giordano (157) and Josh McCutchen (197) putting bonus points on the board with major decision victories. Over the weekend at Throwdown on The Yorktown, Davis helped Gardner-Webb to a huge team win over Air Force, while also recording perhaps his biggest individual win yet. NCAA DI Rankings Updated (11/18/2025)
So we made it through the National Duals Invitational! It was an early-season meat grinder that provided plenty of talking points for fans and data for rankings. Speaking of making it through, there were three number one ranked wrestlers who did not make it from last week to this week.
This week’s rankings have new number one’s at 125, 157, and 184 lbs.
125 lb national champion Vince Robinson fell, once again, to ACC nemesis Eddie Ventresca of Virginia Tech. Ventresca also defeated him last season in their dual and in the ACC finals. That was just a portion of the mess at 125 lbs. Ventresca suffered two losses on the weekend to Minnesota’s Jore Volk. New 125 lber, Nic Bouzakis, beat Volk and pinned Dean Peterson in the NDI finals. Of course, Peterson knocked off returning finalist Troy Spratley in the semifinals. It was Spratley’s second loss of the event. He also fell to Robinson in an NCAA finals rematch.
With so much going on at 125 lbs and no one from the NDI’s coming out unscathed at the weight, we felt comfortable moving Luke Lilledahl up to the #1 slot. Although he only has one match under his belt this year, Lilledahl is a returning NCAA third place finisher and a Big Ten champ.
At 157 lbs, the returning champion, Antrell Taylor, suffered a pair of losses. One to Logan Rozynski in the opening round and a lopsided major decision to Brandon Cannon in the NDI semis. With Meyer Shapiro temporarily out of the picture, the two choices were Ty Watters and Landon Robideau. Watters is a past third place finisher and has a win over Daniel Cardenas at the All-Star Classic. Robideau burst onto the scene with a major decision over Cardenas and an impressive NDI. At this point, I don’t want the true freshman to jump the #2 guy from last week based on a greater margin of victory over a common opponent.
184 lbs saw number one Max McEnelly go down in sudden victory to redshirt freshman Aeoden Sinclair. Sinclair had a battle with Angelo Ferrari in the opening round of the NDI’s and suffered his only loss of the event and season. Not only did Ferrari defeat Sinclair, but also … more at … https://intermatwrestle.com/articles.html/college/ncaa-di-rankings-updated-11182025-r100649/
Iowa City leads the charge as women’s wrestling enters NCAA era
Coralville’s Xtream Arena will host the first-ever NCAA Women’s Wrestling Championships in March.
When Clarissa Chun took over as head coach of the University of Iowa women’s wrestling program, she wasn’t just building a roster — she was constructing a movement.
This March, that movement will reach its most significant milestone yet as Coralville’s Xtream Arena hosts the first NCAA Women’s Wrestling Championships. “I didn’t even realize when I started wrestling that other girls were doing it across the country,” Chun said. “To see women’s wrestling finally reach the NCAA level is truly special.”
A world champion and Olympian, Chun has spent her life breaking barriers in a sport long dominated by men. For her, the word that defines this moment is opportunity — for athletes, universities, and future generations. “It validates everything they’ve worked toward,” Chun said. “But more than that, it gives these women the platform they deserve — to get an education and compete at the highest level.”
When Iowa launched its women’s program in 2021, it became the first Power Five school to offer the sport, a decision that changed collegiate wrestling. “It’s Iowa,” Chun said. “When people think of wrestling, they think of Iowa. Being the first Power Five to add women’s wrestling showed the world it could be done — and done the right way.” … more at … https://dailyiowan.com/2025/11/18/iowa-city-leads-the-charge-as-womens-wrestling-enters-ncaa-era/
