NAIA Women’s Conference Championships: Setting the table for NAIA Nationals in Park City, Kansas

The NAIA hosted six women’s conference championship events this past weekend. The tournaments not only determined conference champion teams and athletes, but also serve as qualifiers for the NAIA Women’s National Championships, which will be held in Park City, Kansas, March 14-15.
On February 20, each conference was awarded automatic bids per weight class. Now that the qualifiers have been held, a 12-member committee will meet and select the remaining at-large qualifiers, until a field of 210 wrestlers has been determined. Seeding and brackets will be announced on NAIA.org by 5 p.m. Central time on Friday, March 7.

A longtime champion of youth development and an accomplished leader, Mangan brings a wealth of experience from his tenure as Executive Director at Beat the Streets Philadelphia (BTSP), where he helped strengthen the organization’s operations, deepen community partnerships, and expand the reach of programs to underserved youth.

1988 Greco-Roman Olympian Duane Koslowski, 65, has passed away

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Duane Koslowski, of Palmyra, Virginia on February 2nd, 2024 at 65 years old. Duane was a three-time national Greco Roman champion at the 130 kg weight class from 1986 to 1988. He placed fourth in the 1986 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, although he was undersized at 255 pounds. He was also fifth at the 1987 World Championships at Clermont-Ferrand, France.
Duane won the 1987 Pan American games in Indianapolis, Indiana. Duane represented the USA in the 130 kg weight class at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, where he placed eighth after injuring his shoulder against the eventual gold medalist Alexander Karelin of Soviet Union during the fourth round match and was unable to continue.
Duane and his twin brother Dennis were proud to represent their home town of Doland, South Dakota. Duane and Dennis shared the stage with Bill and Jim Scherr, twin brothers also from South Dakota, Mobridge, on the Regis Philbin show prior to the Seoul, Olympics. Hall of Fame referee Mike Allen, 74, has passed away
STILLWATER, Okla. – The National Wrestling Hall of Fame was saddened to learn that Mike Allen, who was honored as Meritorious Official by the Hall of Fame in 2007 and inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum’s Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa in 2010, passed away on Friday, at the age of 74.
“On behalf of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Board of Governors and our staff, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Mike Allen’s family and friends,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the Hall of Fame. “Mike was a true pioneer in the wrestling community – a national trailblazer as a referee, a tireless advocate for young athletes, and a dedicated educator. His impact on the sport extended far beyond the mat, as he generously gave his time and expertise to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, serving on numerous committees over the years. His passion, leadership, and commitment to wrestling’s future will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come”
One of the top college and high school wrestling referees in history, Allen officiated for 35 years at numerous major competitions. Distinguished for his efficiency and skill as an official, he was selected to referee many of the most important college wrestling dual meets each season because of his ability, integrity and professionalism on the mat.
He credits his parents, Betty and Willie Allen, and the coaching staff at UNI for helping him become a respected referee. Allen began officiating when he as assistant wrestling coach for Gene Luttrell at Waterloo Central High School. Allen recalled that while questioning some calls being made on the mat, Luttrell said “if you think you can do better, then you should take the officiating test.” Allen said that it was an open book test that he took and passed, beginning his long journey as a wrestling official.

Russian Olympic Champion Turned Lawmaker Dead After Falling From Window
Buvaisar Saitiev, a three-time Russian Olympic freestyle wrestling champion who later became a member of President Vladimir Putin‘s ruling United Russia party, was reportedly found dead after falling from a window.
Newsweek reached out to Russia’s Foreign Ministry for comment by email.
The Context
Since Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, a series of mysterious deaths have claimed the lives of prominent Russian figures, including tycoons, businessmen and oil executives—many of whom reportedly fell from windows under suspicious circumstances.
What To Know
Russian sports officials said Sunday that Saitiev, a former State Duma deputy of Chechen descent and assistant to the head of Dagestan, had died at the age of 49 in Moscow.
Speaking to state-run news agency Tass, the country’s sports minister, Mikhail Degtyarev, described Saitiev’s death as “premature and tragic,” without elaborating. Baza, a Telegram channel with links to Russia’s security services, said Saitiev “may have fallen out of a window.”
A janitor found Saitiev on Sunday in critical condition lying near a residential building on Minskaya Street in the Russian capital. The Telegram channel said the janitor placed Saitiev on wooden boards and alerted the concierge to call an ambulance. “Notably, Saitiev had no visible injuries or signs of bleeding, initially making the circumstances of his condition unclear,” said Baza.
According to Baza, during questioning, Saitiev’s brother suggested that he may have accidentally fallen from the window of his third-floor apartment while doing housework. Ranked Wrestlers Who Did Not Earn NCAA Allocations

NCAA DI Conference allocations have been released! As soon as they were posted by the NCAA wrestling coaches, fans, media members and everyone else in between frantically scrolled through them to see which weight classes had earned “how many” allocations for the 2025 NCAA Championships. 
The way that these were generated, there will always be room left over for at-large bids. All ten weight classes had between four and six berths reserved for at-larges. Some basic math skills will show that there will always be a few ranked wrestlers who do not earn automatic qualifying bids for their respective conference. 
So who are they? We’ve gone through and noted the wrestlers who are currently in InterMat’s top-33, yet did not earn bids for their conference. This doesn’t mean they can’t wrestle in Philadelphia; they just need to place within the number of berths given to their weight class – or rely on an at-large.  For each weight class, we’ve noted the at-large’s available, as well. For some weights, the at-large number matches the number of ranked wrestlers who didn’t earn bids. 
Other weights are where it gets dicey. For example, 157 lbs has six at-large berths available, but nine ranked wrestlers who didn’t earn bids. That means, in a best case scenario, three ranked wrestlers will miss out on the trip to Philadelphia. That is only if everything goes as expected. Oklahoma State Wrestling Leads Balanced Big 12 Tournament Field

The Big 12 Championships at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on March 8-9. The Big 12 received 61 automatic allocations to the NCAA Championships in Philadelphia on March 20-22, with 125, 141, 157, 165, and 184 earning a conference high seven bids.

Oklahoma State is the favorite after an undefeated conference dual season (9-0). The Cowboys have the most Big 12 titles (18) but haven’t won since 2021. This could be a statement win for head coach David Taylor during his rookie season. 
Iowa State (2024) and Missouri (2022-23) combined to win the past three conference titles but have been decimated by injuries this season. Josh Wilson Wins Third NCAA Regional Championship While Earning Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournamen

Danville, VA – Josh Wilson became a three-time NCAA Regional Champion on Saturday as he defeated two nationally ranked wrestlers in the 141lb weight class on his way to the title. Wilson was also named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Regional tournament for the third time.
On day one, Wilson handily defeated Chase Kyler (Thiel) and Mauricio Reyes (Averett) to advance to the semifinals. On Saturday, Wilson wrestled long time rival Mark Samuel from Roanoke, and the two put on a classic showdown to remember. Wilson and Samuel would go all three rounds as Wilson took home the win by Decision, 13-10. The two most recently met at the ODAC Championships and at last year’s NCAA National Tournament, as Wilson won both matches.
In the championship round, Wilson took on #1 ranked Jacob Reed of Ohio Northern. Reed has been the #1 nationally ranked wrestler in the 141lb class almost all season long. Wilson last faced Reed in the NCAA Championship final round last season, as Wilson defeated Reed to win the National Title. Wilson would once again get the best of Reed on Saturday, winning by Decision, 7-3 to win his third NCAA Regional Championship.
Afterwards, Wilson said, “It was a great tournament, and I’m proud of my performance. I’m grateful for my coaching staff, athletic training staff, and teammates for their support in helping me accomplish this feat. But my ultimate goal is to be the most dominant wrestler at the NCAA tournament and win another National Title. My job is not finished.” Wilson will now go for back-to-back National Championships in the 141lb weight class in Providence, Rhode Island March 14th-15th. UNC Pembroke Wrestling Punches Three Tickets To NCAA Championships

PEMBROKE – Heavyweight Oggie Atwood turned in a perfect day to take region champion honors, while Jake Piccirilli (149 pounds) and Logan Robinson (133) also punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships with second and third place finishes, respectively, in NCAA Super Region II action Saturday on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Atwood racked up three pins before securing a championship-winning decision victory at 285 pounds on the way to earning his second-career berth to the national tournament. Piccirilli, ranked sixth at 149 pounds, picked up two bonus-point wins and a decision victory before falling to 13th-ranked John Carayiannis from Belmont Abbey in the region championship bout, but will still take part in his third trip to the NCAA tournament.
Robinson split his first two matches in the 133-pound division before taking a technical fall win in the consolation semifinals to earn a spot in the third-place, where he used an 18-12 decision win to punch his ticket to the national tournament for the second time as a Brave.
Will Lowery dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 decision in the third-place match at 165 pounds to finish fourth, while Joey Bruscino (125 pounds), Logan Hoffman (174), and Shylik Scriven (184) all took home fifth-place finishes. Nicolosi wins regional; UMO features three qualifiers

PEMBROKE, N.C. (March 1) – The University of Mount Olive men’s wrestling program qualified three wrestlers for the NCAA National Championships following their performance at the NCAA Super Region II Championships held on the campus of UNCP on Saturday.  
The Trojans tallied 92 points in the team standings behind five wrestlers with top-four finishes while competing on the regional stage. Lander won a third-straight NCAA Regionals with 157 points following eight wrestlers qualifying for nationals. UNC Pembroke (117 points) placed second overall with a trio of qualifiers and Newberry rounded out the top three behind 109.5 points.  
Senior Jake Nicolosi became the second-ever in program history to claim an individual regional championship at Mount Olive. Competing at 157, he produced an unblemished 4-0 record to capture the crown and clinch his spot as a national qualifier. In the opening round, Nicolosi posted a 15-0 tech fall over Malachi Thomas of Limestone before defeating Dennis Virelli of Newberry via a 14-3 major decision. He followed up with a 10-4 decision over No. 2 seed Keegan Roberson of UNC Pembroke to earn his spot in the championship. In the title bout, Nicolosi got his revenge and battled to an 11-7 decision versus top-seeded Trent Mahoney of King.  
In the 165-weight class, freshman Brent Nicolosi entered as the No. 2 seed and finished as the runner-up in his first regional appearance. After a first-round bye, he pinned Samuel Daniels of Limestone before a dominant 16-0 tech fall against William Lowery of UNCP to reach the championship. Nicolosi faced off against No. 1 ranked David Hunsberger of Lander and despite an excellent performance fell via a 7-6 decision. Brent will join brother Jake as a national qualifier in what has been an outstanding season for the tandem.
