Update: 2024 National Girls High School Preseason Rankings released and Pound-For-Pound Rankings also updated

USA WrestlingFloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum has published the Preseason Rankings for high school girls wrestlers for the 2024-25 season. This national ranking evaluates all girls enrolled in grades 8-12, and athletes from all 50 states are eligible for selection.
Last year’s high school graduates have been removed, and many new athletes have joined the rankings for the first time, including eligibility for incoming eighth graders.
The event which clearly had the most impact on these rankings was the record-setting 2024 USMC Junior and 16U Nationals in Fargo, N.D. in July. The rankings also included results from the U17 and U20 World Championships.
Please note that none of the preseason events already held in September are included in this ranking. For instance, the results from the Ultimate Club Duals will be included in the November ranking. This ranking only includes competitions through the summer of 2024.
With the new season comes eight new No. 1 wrestlers in the rankings. They include Heather Crull of Indiana (105), Epinesa Elison of California (110), Kaura Coles of Montana (115), Savannah Witt of Pennsylvania (120), Sarah Henckel of Connecticut (145), Kaili Manuel of Michigan (155), Brooke Huffman of Wisconsin (190) and Tirza Twoteeth of Montana (235). Seven wrestlers who finished last season ranked No. 1 have returned and start the new season in the No. 1 spot again: Hailey Delgado of Texas (95), Morgan Turner of Illinois (100), Everest Leydecker of Arizona (125), Aubre Krazer of Pennsylvania (130), Taina Fernandez of Maryland (135), Bella Williams of Oklahoma (140) and Piper Fowler of Tennessee (170) … more at … https://www.themat.com/news/2024/september/25/2024-national-girls-high-school-preseason-rankings-released-and-pound-for-pound-rankings-also-updated

Wrestling Excited to Battle Campbell in the ‘Dual at the Daddy’ Oct. 31 to Kick Off the 2024-25 Season

LARAMIE, Wyoming (9/18/24) – The University of Wyoming wrestling team and Campbell University are set to commence the 2024-25 NCAA wrestling season. The two schools received permission from the NCAA to host the “Dual at the Daddy,” before the official start date of Nov. 1. It will be the first NCAA wrestling competition in the nation.
The event isn’t only the first one of the season, but it also has all the clippings of being a one-of-a-kind dual. It’ll take place on Frontier Park, the home of Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Daddy of ’em All.  “I don’t think many wrestling fans thought we could eclipse the atmosphere and excitement that the Battle in the Barn created last season, but coach Sentes and I said, “Hold our Cowboy hats,” Wyoming head coach Mark Branch said. “The Dual at the Daddy, is going to be bigger and badder, and we are excited to bring such a unique event to college wrestling. It’s going to be phenomenal.”
As Branch alluded to, the Battle in the Barn took place last season at Deerwood Ranch in Centennial, Wyoming. It was a competitive dual in a quintessential Wyoming location, and that gave momentum to an idea like the Dual at the Daddy. … more at … https://gowyo.com/news/2024/9/18/wrestling-excited-to-battle-campbell-in-the-dual-at-the-daddy-oct-31-to-kick-off-the-2024-25-season.aspx?utm_source=Wrestling+News&utm_campaign=b9b5ed600d-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_09_28_09_07_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_44607e8210-b9b5ed600d-245314521&mc_cid=b9b5ed600d

Morgan State Men’s Wrestling Joins the EIWA

BALTIMORE, Md.  (September 19, 2024) — The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association has approved the addition of Morgan State as its newest member institution.  Morgan State will become the 12th member of the EIWA, the oldest wrestling conference in the nation.
EIWA Executive Director, Gene Nighman is welcoming the Bears with open arms: “I’m pleased to welcome Morgan State University as the newest member in the long and storied history of the EIWA.  Starting back in 1904, the EIWA member institutions have been committed to advancing the sport of wrestling and providing all participants with an elite Championship experience.  As we approach the start of the 121st season, the EIWA is proud to have the only HBCU program as one of our members and looks forward to all twelve EIWA schools gathering at Lehigh University on March 7 for the 2025 EIWA Championship Tournament.”
Dena Freeman-Patton, Morgan State’s Director of Athletics and Vice President, states with great enthusiasm, “This is an exciting time for Morgan State. The EIWA is a great fit for our wrestling program competitively, academically and regionally. Our student-athletes are looking forward to competing for championships.”
Located in Baltimore, MD, Morgan State announced in October of 2021 that it would revive the wrestling program after a 24-year hiatus. A $2.7 million gift towards the program is the largest single donation in the school’s history. This gift was spearheaded by Mike Novogratz and the HBCU Wrestling (HCUW) Initiative, whose sole mission is to restore wrestling at HBCUs. Wrestling programs of all shapes and sizes have disappeared due to Title IX and lack of funding over the decades. Morgan State was no different. At this moment, MSU is the lone HBCU (Historically Black College or University) in Division 1 wrestling.
The Bears first competed in the sport in the early 1950s. They were dominant well into the 60s, winning multiple conference titles. Morgan State’s most recent success began in 1975 when James Phillips took over as the head coach. Of his 20 seasons at the helm, the Bears won 13 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles while earning Coach of the Year 12 times. He coached 4 national champions, and 75 All-Americans during his tenure. The wrestling program came to a halt at the end of the 1996-97 season. The reason provided was a lack of resources. … more at … https://morganstatebears.com/news/2024/9/18/morgan-state-mens-wrestling-to-begin-eiwa-competition-in-2024-25.aspx

Wrestling community mourns death of legendary coach Pat Pecora

Sep. 8—The day Larry Hohman was headed to college when he was 18, his dad died. He walked into the office of Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach Pat Pecora for guidance. Pecora instructed him to go home for a week to be with family, and he would take care of things. “On that day, coach became my father,” said Hohman, the Penn-Trafford wrestling coach. “He counseled me and made me the man, the father and the teacher I am today.”
Pecora, 70, died late Saturday night after a courageous battle with cancer. The legendary coach built Pitt-Johnstown into a national power and led them to more victories than any wrestling coach in history. The Mountain Cats won NCAA Division II national titles in 1996 and 1999. “What didn’t coach teach me?” Hohman said. “He was a father figure to all of us. Everyone who wrestled for him was family. He made us all better men.”
In 48 years as coach, Pecora produced 170 NCAA All-Americans and 15 national champions. … more at … https://lancasteronline.com/sports/olympics/wrestling-community-mourns-death-of-legendary-coach-pat-pecora/article_2df08c53-8de5-5b6f-9ba4-a22a30372d89.html

Docs: NCAA considering applying football redshirt rule to athletes in all sports

The NCAA is considering more historic changes to its amateurism rules.
Member schools plan to seriously consider granting athletes in all sports, not just football, the ability to participate in up to a certain percentage of games in a fifth season and still use their redshirt; permit athletes to earn prize money before they enroll in college; and eliminate the National Letter of Intent. The potential changes are part of what is expected to be a year-long comprehensive review of NCAA athlete-eligibility rules to reflect and operationalize the House settlement terms, according to documents obtained by Yahoo Sports. The documents will be reviewed this coming week during a video call of the NCAA Division I Council.
Recommendations and approval of the athlete-eligibility rules are expected to occur on a rolling basis and be presented to the DI Council for consideration at regular quarterly meetings through October 2025. However, a new signing model with the elimination of the National Letter of Intent could be approved as soon as October, according to documents distributed to administrators.
While expected given the arrival of athlete revenue sharing next year, the changes under consideration are historic and significant in nature — the latest steps in college sports’ evolution away from the amateurism model that has cost it billions in legal losses.
In one of the more notable potential changes, athletes in all sports could participate in up to a certain amount of contests during a sports season while still using their redshirt. Such a policy is only currently permitted in football and wrestling. In football, for instance, a player can play in up to four regular-season games and still use his redshirt season (the NCAA recently updated this rule to exempt all postseason competition from the four-game policy).
Such a rule has not existed for sports like basketball, baseball and all others aside from wrestling. If the policy is changed, sport-specific NCAA committees will be tasked with determining how many contests a player in each sport can participate in before a year of eligibility is exhausted. In the NCAA documents, an example is offered of 30%, a similar figure used in football.
Other notable changes include what documents describe as a “new signing model” with the elimination of the National Letter of Intent. The “core benefits” of the National Letter of Intent will be incorporated into the institution’s athletics financial aid and scholarship agreements, according to the document. Similar recruiting rules tied to the National Letter of Intent will continue with the signing of school aid agreements. … more at … https://sports.yahoo.com/docs-ncaa-considering-applying-football-redshirt-rule-to-athletes-in-all-sports-154903963.html

New Faces in the ACC for 2024-25

Another season ushers in another wave of new ACC wrestlers and coaches. We’ve already seen breakdowns of the recruiting classes, let’s take a look at the new coaching hires and transfers that join the ACC this fall.

Duke
Erkin Tadzhimetov joins the coaching staff in Durham after a long tenure at his alma mater Utah Valley. He will work with the lightweights, marking a big change in the staffing in the Lanham era. Coach Lanham has had an upper-weight heavy coaching staff over the past decade and the addition of a lightweight coach could pay dividends for the Blue Devils.
Tyler O’Boyle (285) Franklin and Marshall
Spencer Von Savoye (141/149) California Baptist

North Carolina
Vincenzo Joseph will join the Tar Heels staff in the role of Recruiting Coordinator. The two-time NCAA Champion for the Nittany Lions will be reuniting with Coach Koll having served on staff under him at Stanford. For the new position, Joseph will “assist the program in team travel, on-campus recruiting, match day planning, and operations, donor relations, and all program-related events”. In his short time in the college coaching ranks, Joseph has shown that he can be a valuable asset to the Tar Heel staff.
Nolan Neves (285) – Columbia
Ethan Oakley (133) – Appalachian State – SOCON Champ 2x NCAA Qualifier
Josh Ogunsanya (174) – North Carolina? – EIWA Runner-Up 2x NCAA Qualifier

North Carolina State
Zack Esposito steps into the Associate Head Coach position after the departure of Adam Hall to Utah Valley. Espo brings a wealth of experience on the folkstyle and freestyle side. He was the RTC coach at Oklahoma State prior to taking the Associate Head Coach role, where he served for seven years. Most recently he was in Colorado Springs as the Freestyle Developmental and Resident Coach for USA Wrestling.

Pittsburgh
Lou Rosselli joins the Panthers, adding another experienced and successful coach to the staff. … more at … https://intermatwrestle.com/articles.html/college/acc/new-faces-in-the-acc-for-2024-25-r99551/
