The Campbell Funding Situation
“I am committed to continuing our winning tradition both academically and athletically. I look forward to the work ahead with a focus on providing a championship caliber experience for our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the entire Campbell family. The future is bright for Campbell Athletics.”
Those are the words for Campbell University’s Director of Athletics Hannah Bazemore shortly after being named the school’s athletic director in November 2022.
Those words rang hollow just a day after the school’s wrestling team learned that they would have a significant amount of funding cut from them. Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the wrestling program will only be given three scholarships which is a sharp decrease from the nine they had been working with. In what seems to be an unusual move, wrestlers who wish to keep their scholarships would not be allowed to compete.
InterMat reached out to AD Bazemore for comment on this story and/or more information about this situation and has yet to receive a response as of Tuesday morning. Men’s and women’s soccer, golf, tennis, and volleyball are also said to be impacted.
This change comes on the heels of the school’s move from the Big South Conference to the Coastal Athletic Association (formerly the Colonial Athletic Association). The move put Campbell in a conference that stretches from Charleston, South Carolina to Boston, Massachusetts. It was likely supposed to boost the school’s profile in football and basketball but generally has added more in travel expenses for everyone else – a common thread in conference realignment.
Another “big-picture” change that’s in play here is the announcement that college athletics must share revenue with their athletes. Campbell has reportedly “opted in” to participate in revenue sharing in the future. Administrators can stomach sharing revenue with football and basketball teams, but everyone else, not so much. That plays a part in this decision.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (WTVD) — Korbin Meink recalls his time wrestling for Campbell University fondly. “I enjoyed my time there. I got two degrees from that school, and everything about it was awesome while I was there. I felt like we were one of the best programs on campus, and it was great to be part of that,” said Meink, who graduated in 2022.
Meinik’s experience influenced his younger brother to take a recruiting trip to Campbell himself. However, what the brothers learned on that trip was difficult to accept. “They were talking about how they wanted to give (him) a scholarship, and they just said we don’t have it anymore because we have the guys on the team we need to look after, and right now our recruiting has kind of gone to a halt because we have no more funds to give to anyone,” said Meink.

I’m not used to writing a lot about the Campbell University Camels on this newsletter. I know they have an excellent baseball program, they’re in Buies Creek, North Carolina, they’re a small, private college in the CAA, and their fans apparently say Roll Humps, which is maybe my new favorite fan slogan.
I also knew that Campbell had a real wrestling tradition. Remember when we wrote about how the University of Wyoming scheduled a wrestling match in a barn? They put it on UFC Fight Pass and everything. That was against Campbell. Also, the Camels won.

Big Ten Network Announces 2024-25 Big Ten Wrestling Broadcast Schedule
CHICAGO, Ill. – The Big Ten Network today announced the 2024-25 Big Ten wrestling broadcast schedule, as the nation’s premier wrestling conference looks for an 18th consecutive NCAA Championship. This season, 24 duals and Big Ten Wrestling Championships coverage will air live on the Big Ten Network and the FOX Sports App, with more than 80 contests airing on B1G+. Coverage begins on Saturday, Nov. 9, with No. 2 Iowa hosting No. 15 Stanford from Iowa City.
Conference wrestling on BTN begins on Friday, Dec. 6, with a matchup between No. 12 Illinois and No. 30 Indiana. Coverage continues in the new year with a primetime doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 10, featuring No. 14 Michigan hosting No. 27 Maryland at 6 p.m. ET, followed by Michigan State traveling to face No. 1 Penn State at 8 p.m. ET. Throughout January and February, Friday night wrestling will be featured on BTN with primetime matchups between the best programs in the country, including a battle between No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Iowa at 7 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 31.

Hall of Fame Wrestling Coach Bucky Maughan Passes Away
FARGO, N.D. – National Wrestling Hall of Fame Coach Arthur “Bucky” Maughan, who led the North Dakota State University wrestling program for 47 seasons from 1964 to 2011, passed away Tuesday night at the age of 83.
Maughan’s Bison teams won four NCAA Division II national championships in 1988, 1998, 2000 and 2001 as well as making six national runner-up finishes.
During NDSU’s Division II era, he coached 21 wrestlers to 30 NCAA Division II national championships and had 19 wrestlers compete in the Division I championships, including six placewinners. Maughan led NDSU to 17 North Central Conference titles, including a span of nine straight from 1982-1990, and coached 88 NCC individual champions.
Maughan also successfully guided the Bison into the program’s Division I era. He coached five Western Wrestling Conference champions and sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Division I championships.
Maughan finished his 47-year Bison career with a record of 467 wins, 157 losses and 13 ties in dual meets. He led NDSU to three undefeated seasons in 1984-85, 1991-92 and 2003-04.

Hodge Preseason Front-Runners
The Dan Hodge Trophy, sponsored by WIN Magazine and Culture House and presented by ASICS, will be awarded after the 2025 NCAA Championships to the most dominant college wrestler.
Created by WIN founder Mike Chapman in 1995, the award is named after the late Dan Hodge, the three-time NCAA champion from the University of Oklahoma (1955-57) who never allowed a takedown in his career and pinned 36 of 46 opponents.
In addition to the fan vote, the Hodge Trophy Voting Committee, made up of past winners of the award, former coaches and national media members select the winner each year. Criteria for winning the award includes a wrestler’s record, dominance/bonus-point percentage, quality of competition and sportsmanship.
There are 10 NCAA Division I wrestlers who have won NCAA championships and are considered preseason front-runners to win the 2025 Dan Hodge Trophy.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team, under the guidance of head coach Cael Sanderson, has announced its 2024-25 schedule. Penn State will have seven home duals this season, including two in the Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions will also host the NWCA All-Star Classic once again in Rec Hall. Please note that all dates and times are subject to change.
The season begins with a big opening weekend in Rec Hall. The venerable building will once again be the site of the NWCA All-Star Classic exhibition. The event, which is not an official NCAA event or part of Penn State’s season ticket package, is set for Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event can be purchased at https://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0200612BD69D5222 . Penn State’s official NCAA schedule then begins the next day with a home dual in Rec Hall when the Nittany Lions host Drexel at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17.
Penn State heads to West Point, N.Y., the next weekend for the Black Knight Invitational at Army West Point. The one day event takes place on Sunday, Nov. 24, and runs all-day. Penn State visits Lehigh on Sunday, Dec. 8, for a 2 p.m. dual with the Mountain Hawks. The next weekend, Penn State welcomes the Wyoming Cowboys to Rec Hall for a 1 p.m. dual meet on Sunday, Dec. 15. Penn State closes out the first semester schedule a week later, travelling to Nashville, Tenn., for the Journeymen Collegiate Duals on Sunday, Dec. 22. Penn State will wrestle three dual meets on that day, taking on Binghamton, Arkansas-Little Rock and Missouri.

Ohio State 2025 Big Ten Schedule Announced
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will battle four Big Ten opponents at the Covelli Center in 2025 with four scheduled for the road, the league announced Tuesday. Rutgers, Purdue, Minnesota and Penn State will face the Buckeyes in Columbus.
Ohio State travels to Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Indiana to round out the eight-match conference season. Match times, dates and television designations will be determined at a later date. The Buckeyes finished eighth at the 2024 NCAA Championships with three Ohio State individuals earning All-America status last year. Junior Jesse Mendez is back to defend both his 2023 Big Ten and NCAA titles at 141 pounds.
The Buckeyes finished with a dual record of 15-2 a year ago, which included a 7-1 Big Ten record. Ohio State returns starters at eight weights in the nine that qualified for the 2024 NCAA Championships.

Hawkeyes Release Complete 2024-25 Schedule
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Head coach Tom Brands released the complete University of Iowa men’s wrestling schedule for the 2024-25 season on Thursday. The Hawkeyes will host seven duals inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena this season. Times and TV designations will be announced at a later date.
Notes about the 2024-25 season:
- Iowa opens the season traveling to Corvallis to face Oregon State on Nov. 2. The Hawkeyes also travel to Bellarmine (Nov. 15), and face Princeton and Army in St. Charles, Missouri (Dec. 6) as part of the Journeymen Wrestling’s “Uncivil War”.
- The team’s first home dual at Carver Hawkeye Arena is on Nov. 9 against Stanford on Mediacom Mat. The Hawkeyes will also host Iowa State (Nov. 23) and Oklahoma State (Feb. 23) in nonconference home duals.
- Iowa will close out the 2024 calendar year competing in the Soldier Salute at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. The event will take place on Dec. 29-30.
- The Hawkeyes host Illinois (Jan. 17), Ohio State (Jan. 25), Nebraska (Feb. 7) and Northwestern (Feb. 16) in Big Ten duals at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
- Iowa travels for league road duals at Wisconsin (Jan. 12), Penn State (Jan. 31), Maryland (Feb. 2) and Minnesota (Feb. 14).
- The postseason begins at the Big Ten Championships on March 8-9 in Evanston, Illinois, while the 2025 NCAA Championships will be held from March 20-22 in Philadelphia.

Upstart Lindsey Wilson Women’s Wrestling Ready To Take On The Nation
Lindsey Wilson’s women’s wrestling team will test the NAIA’s best during its inaugural season.
The Lindsey Wilson women’s wrestling program is ready to launch. And head coach Devane Dodgens couldn’t be more excited.
The Columbia, Kentucky-based college competes in the Mid-South Conference and will take on the NAIA’s best. Dodgens has built a team capable of cracking the top 10 in year one.
The Blue Raiders have a few high-profile transfers and top high-school talent to get things started. It took eight months for Dodgens to build a roster of 40 wrestlers — but he wants more. “Having a first-year women’s wrestling program is a transformative experience,” Dodgens said. “The opportunity to build something from the ground up with support can help build a winning culture and attitude for our ladies and the team. “We want to be the hardest working, best conditioned, most professional, unselfish, toughest, meanest, and funniest team in the NAIA. My vision is to see the program grow to 50-60 ladies who all want to have an enjoyable college experience. As a team, we want to grow as a family.”
Dodgens coached the men’s and women’s teams at Brewton-Parker before assuming the head women’s role at Lindsey Wilson. He was a two-time All-American at Life University, finishing seventh at the 2015 NAIA Championships and third in 2017.
Leidaly Rivera and India Page are returning NAIA All-Americans, and Josselinne Campos, Brielle Bibla, Alesandra Burgos, and Sierra Hartfelder are college national qualifiers. Add a handful of nationally ranked high school girls and this team could make some noise. “We want to be in the top five at some point like a lot of great teams in our conference are,” Dodgens said. “We want to bring back national titles and a bunch of All-American honors. As a first-year program, we have to remember two words: temper expectations. We are good on paper but that doesn’t mean anything when we toe the line. We will get what we ultimately work for. “This group is exciting and has a balanced group of youth mixed in with veterans. I am excited to work with such an outstanding group of ladies.”

Campbell and Nebraska to wrestle at Jim Perry Stadium
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell’s dual against Nebraska on November 15 will be a special event, as the two teams will face off on the infield of Jim Perry Stadium beginning at 4:30 and streamed on UFC Fight Pass. “Nebraska is a top 3 ranked team, and we get to wrestle them at the historic Jim Perry Stadium,” head coach Scotti Sentes said. “It really doesn’t get much better than that. The team is well aware of the winning tradition set in that baseball field, and we are honored to go in there and build on that tradition.” This will be the first time Campbell will wrestle at Jim Perry Stadium, continuing their effort to wrestle at unique venues. “We have a senior-heavy team with a lot of experience competing under the bright lights,” said Sentes. “It should be a fun dual with a lot of high-flying action from both sides of the mat. I anticipate a great show for the fans and look forward to a fun afternoon of wrestling.”
During intermission, CLAW Wrestling will host a match between Jordan Oliver and Bryce Andonian. Campbell has wrestled multiple times in an aircraft hangar at Fort Liberty in Fayetteville, facing off against Army, North Carolina and Michigan. Last year, they wrestled Wyoming in the Battle in the Barn at the highest elevation ever for an NCAA dual.
To begin this season, Campbell and Wyoming received a waiver from the NCAA to begin their season on October 31st. The teams will face off in the Dual at the Daddy at Frontier Park in Cheyenne. The venue hosts Cheyenne Frontier Days, the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration and known as “The Daddy of the All”.
