Jake Patacsil joins Campbell staff as assistant coach

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell wrestling Head Coach Scotti Sentes has announced the hiring of Jake Patacsil as an assistant coach. “The Patacsil name is huge in the state of Florida and his family, including his dad and brother, has done a lot of good for wrestling in Florida,” Sentes said. “Despite not meeting Jake until after he applied, I have known about him and followed his successful wrestling and coaching career for a very long time.”
Sentes continued, “When Jake applied for the position, I was excited at first because I know he is one of the best top wrestlers of all time, but as I have gotten to know Jake better, I am more excited about the passion that he brings into the wrestling room and the mindset that I anticipate he will instill in the athletes.”
Patacsil spent last season volunteering at Manchester University and St. Thomas Aquinas. Previously, he was at St. Thomas University, an NAIA program in Florida. Patacsil was the first head wrestling coach in school history, as the Bobcats began the program in 2020. “The Campbell wrestling program, with its tradition of success in the Southern Conference and at the national tournament, is a team I greatly admired,” said Patacsil. “When Coach Sentes and I discussed the opportunity for me to contribute to the program, I was filled with excitement. I am committed to doing my part to ensure the team’s continued success, as I believe this is a special team I can contribute to and be a part of.” … more at … https://gocamels.com/news/2024/9/16/wrestling-jake-patacsil-joins-campbell-staff-as-assistant-coach.aspx

‘Unstoppable’ captures Anthony Robles’ singular life, with Robles as his own stunt double

TORONTO (AP) — A few hours before the film about his life, “Unstoppable,” was to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Anthony Robles, sitting alongside the actor who plays him, Jharrel Jerome, was remembering the moment he won the NCAA wrestling national title.
He had done something that was, by any measure, extraordinary. Robles was born without his right leg. Through grit and determination, Robles had risen to be the best 125-pound wrestler in the country. But the last thing on his mind at that moment was Hollywood. “I was sitting there showering off after the match,” Robles says. “I was excited and then I was like, ‘I gotta find a job. I gotta start getting my resume together.’ I never got into any of this for the attention.”
“Unstoppable,” which premiered Friday night in Toronto, was one of the most-anticipated premieres of the festival partly because of outside drama. The film is produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and co-stars Jennifer Lopez as Robles’ mom, Judy. But if all the talk going in was about who would turn up between Affleck and Lopez (Lopez did), the talk after the movie belonged to Robles and Jerome.
The film, directed by the Oscar-winning editor William Goldenberg (“Argo,” “Heat”) and which Amazon MGM will release in December, is in many ways a conventional sports drama, with an uplifting message and terrific supporting performances from Lopez, Don Cheadle, Michael Peña and Bobby Cannavale. … more at … https://www.kark.com/entertainment-news/ap-unstoppable-captures-anthony-robles-singular-life-with-robles-as-his-own-stunt-double/

Montreat Men’s wrestling announces upcoming schedule for 2024-25 season

MONTREAT, N.C.— Looking to build off a strong close to the previous year, the Montreat men’s wrestling team recently announced its upcoming schedule for the 2024-25 season. Along with competing in numerous duals and opens, the Cavaliers are also hosting a trio of duals after the calendar flips to 2025.
Two of Montreat’s initial three events feature open tournament action, beginning with the Patriot Open on Nov. 2 in Williamsburg, Ky. The Cavs’ lone dual early on is scheduled for the 13th against the reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) champion, Life University. Nine days later, the squad returns to Marietta, Ga. for the Lucha Open.
December includes another dual for Montreat, this time at the University of Pikeville on the 6th. Following that AAC showdown, the Cavaliers close out 2024 with an appearance at the Rocky Top Duals.
A two-day trip to Alabama gets the January slate underway for the Cavs before they host a pair of duals versus Truett McConnell University and West Virginia Institute of Technology on Jan. 15 and Jan. 22, respectively. From there, only the Missouri Valley Invitational separates Montreat from its third and final home dual, a date with St. Andrews University, on Feb. 6. … more at … https://montreatcavaliers.com/news/2024/8/29/mens-wrestling-mens-wrestling-announces-upcoming-schedule-for-2024-25-season.aspx

Appalachian State Wrestling Announces 2024-25 Schedule, Season Ticket Details

BOONE, N.C. — With several high-profile opponents set to visit Varsity Gym, which has been upgraded via seating and visual enhancements for the 2024-25 season, App State Wrestling announced its complete schedule and season ticket availability Tuesday.
The Mountaineers’ home schedule includes visits from nonconference foes West Virginia (on Nov. 22, a Friday night before a Nov. 23 home football game against James Madison), Virginia Tech (Sunday, Jan. 19) and Duke (Monday, Jan. 20) as well as SoCon counterparts Chattanooga (Sunday, Feb. 9) and Campbell (Sunday, Feb. 23).
Counting two Saturday tournaments and seven duals, there are nine home events on the schedule for App State, which closed last season with a SoCon Championship tournament title and a No. 24 national ranking.
General admission season tickets with seating on the familiar sets of sideline bleachers are available for the low cost of $70 for the nine home events. For faculty/staff, the discounted price is $60.
New endline seating, facing the new competition mat and the Varsity Gym scoreboard, will be in place as a premium seating option for the 2024-25 season.
A season ticket in the Premium Gold section — which has a reserved seat that includes a seatback, a cupholder and more leg room than a traditional bleacher seat — costs $100. A season ticket in the Premium Black section, which is a general admission seat (that also has a seatback) within the Premium area, outside of the Premium Gold seats, costs $85.
Single-match tickets will go on sale at a later date, with the matches against West Virginia, Virginia Tech and Campbell serving as Varsity Plus duals, so the best value for App State Wrestling fans is purchasing a season ticket.
This season, home duals will be streamed live on FloWrestling, which has a subscription model.
The Mountaineers’ schedule begins Nov. 3 with a tournament appearance at the Battle at The Citadel, and App State will host the Mountaineer Invitational the following Saturday. The dual schedule begins Friday night, Nov. 15 at NC State. … more at … https://appstatesports.com/news/2024/9/10/-24-wrestling-app-state-wrestling-announces-schedule-season-ticket-details-for-2024-25.aspx

Adams, Barket & Console Tabbed Duke University Captains for 2024-25

DURHAM, N.C. — The 2024-25 Duke wrestling team will feature a trio of captains – sophomore Raymond Adams, redshirt sophomore Connor Barket and redshirt sophomore Gaetano Console – as announced Thursday by Blue Devil head coach Glen Lanham.
It marks the second straight season that Barket and Console will serve as captains. A native of Barrington Hills, Illinois, Console has notched 14 victories over the last two seasons.  He totaled nine wins a season ago, including four at the annual Keystone Classic.  Console saw action at 165-pounds for most of the season before moving up to compete … more at … https://goduke.com/news/2024/9/5/wrestling-adams-barkett-console-tabbed-captains-for-2024-25.aspx

Starting in the fall of 2025, wrestling will join the winter athletics season, from October to March, as part of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA). “We’ve known for a long time that wrestling is a popular sport in our area that produces great student-athletes,” Sue Brugh, Director of Student Activities and Athletics said. “We were approached by local wrestling advocates and the National Wrestling Coaches Association about how it would benefit Penn Highlands. Now, we’re very excited to take the next step.”
Penn Highlands said a search has begun for the program’s inaugural head coach, whose responsibilities will revolve around the development of the program and recruitment efforts ahead of the team’s official activities next fall.
