Ferrum Wrestling Team Grabs ODAC Win Feb. 2 at SVU
BUENA VISTA, Virginia — Ferrum College earned an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) wrestling win Friday, February 2, on the road over Southern Virginia University, winning 42-9 at SVU’s Knight Arena. RECORDS

THE BASICS
Qwantez Watkins started things off for the Panthers with an 18-3 tech fall over Quinn Richards at 125 pounds. Walker Bell managed the same thing with a 23-6 tech fall over John Carlson at 133 pounds.  Jon Ward kept it going at 141 pounds with a 12-9 decision over Weston Hirschi. Southern Virginia’s Elijah Blackwell got the Knights on the scoreboard with a pin over Ferrum’s Joseph Olalde at 149 pounds. Tyler Ramirez answered right back, pinning Porter Kinne at 157 pounds to make it a 19-6 Ferrum lead. Mateo Villalobos kept it rolling with a pin over Calvin Fillmore at 165 pounds to increase the lead to 25-6. No. 5 Baldwin-Wallace Men’s Wrestling Wins 37th John Summa Invitational on Seniors’ Day
BEREA, Ohio – The No. 5 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University men’s wrestling team won the 37th John Summa Invitational inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse. BW, who honored its 10 senior student-athletes prior to championship matches, was the champion of 13 teams with 187 points.  Wilkes (Pa.) College was second with 147 points.
The Yellow Jackets, who claimed the team title for the second time in the past three years and third time overall, had 18 top-8 finishers, including five champions and three runner-up’s. Southern Maine Extends Win Streak to Eight, Defeats Plymouth State (35-21), Western New England (22-19) and Trinity (29-18)
HARTFORD, Conn.     –  Sophomore Jake Craig (Skowhegan, Maine) and junior Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each had a pair of dominant wins by technical fall to highlight a 3-0 day for the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the Trinity College Quad Meet at Memorial Fieldhouse.
Southern Maine earned wins over Plymouth State 35-21, Trinity College 29-18, and had a dramatic 22-19 win against Western New England. With the three dual meet victories, Southern Maine has won eight in a row and improves to 12-6 in dual meet action.

No. 20 Roanoke Wrestling upsets no. 7 Stevens 17-16
The Match Facts:
Score: No. 20 Roanoke 17, No. 7 Stevens 16
Location: Salem, Va.
The short story: The no. 20 Roanoke College wrestling team upset no. 7 Stevens 17-16 Saturday night in the Cregger Center in a match between two of the top teams in NCAA Division III.
How it happened:
*Roanoke’s Mac Cafurello started the dual off with an 8-2 decision over Akhil Vega of Stevens at 125 and Jude Robson put the Maroons up 9-0 with a pin in 4:05 at 133. The Ducks scored decision victories in the next two weight classes to cut the lead to 9-6.

Vermont-Castleton Wrestling’s Historic Season Continues With Wins Over #7 JWU, #24 Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The ninth-ranked Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team continued to build on its historic season Saturday, earning the program’s first-ever victory over perennial powerhouse #7 Johnson & Wales and shutting out #24 Springfield, 47-0.
The Spartans were ready to go from the opening whistle, winning five of the first six bouts against JWU before taking all 10 bouts against Springfield in the second match of the day. Six different Spartans went 2-0 in the dual matches, with a trio of Spartans picking up wins over nationally-ranked opponents in the JWU dual.
The victories improve VTSU Castleton’s record this season to 18-3, tying a program record for wins in a season with two more duals remaining on the schedule. JWU is now 23-5 on the season and Springfield sits at 12-7 on the year. Averett Wrestling downs Greensboro in ODAC dual
GREENSBORO, N.C.— Averett University men’s wrestling dominated Greensboro College 48-5 on Thursday night. As a team, Averett (20-6, 4-1 ODAC) recorded just one loss against Greensboro (1-8, 1-3 ODAC). The Cougars compiled three pins, two technical falls and two major decisions in their dominant performance. At 174 pounds, sophomore Michael Gabbard scored Averett’s first points when he got a 19-9 major decision against Luke Gregory. Sophomore Nolan Gerwitz pinned Julian Rodriguez in just under a minute in the 184-pound weight class. At 197 pounds, senior Jamar Christian got the 14-4 major decision against Khalil Belk. Maroon Wrestling rolls 38-9 over Ferrum on Senior Day
RC Clinches a part of ODAC Team Title
The Match Facts:
Score: Roanoke 38, Ferrum 9
Location: Salem, Va.
The Short story: The Roanoke College wrestling team scored a decisive 38-9 victory Thursday night over visiting Ferrum College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match on Senior Night. The program’s five seniors were honored in a pre-match ceremony.  
With tonight’s victory, the Maroons secured at least a three-way tie for the ODAC team title and can stand alone as the conference champion with a win at Averett University on Feb. 8.  
How it happened:

Wisconsin downs Northwestern 30-12
Badgers take seven of 10 bouts
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Badgers took down the Northwestern Wildcats 30-12, taking seven of 10 bouts Friday night in the UW Field House.
No. 2 Eric Barnett (19-2) once again got the night started for Wisconsin, securing the major decision win over Northwestern’s Massey Odiotti. Barnett secured two takedowns and two near falls, including a four-pointer.
Redshirt freshman Nicolar Rivera and No. 22 Joseph Zargo kept the Badgers hot streak going. Rivera won in a dominant 13-4 major decision win and Zargo won by decision 4-1 in a hard-fought battle.
True freshman Zan Fugitt made his Big Ten dual debut and secured his first collegiate dual win, taking down Kolby McClain by major decision. He secured a takedown in each period.

Michigan State Downs No. 26 Illinois, 29-10
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Michigan State wrestling won seven matches, including three with bonus points, on Friday night to down No. 26 Illinois for the first time since 2011, 29-10, inside the State Farm Center. It’s MSU’s second-straight victory over a ranked opponent after defeating then No. 17-ranked Wisconsin last Friday night.
The Spartans improve to 9-3 overall and 2-3 in B1G matches while Illinois drops to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in conference duals. “This win speaks on the depth of this program,” said head Michigan State wrestling coach Roger Chandler. “What I’m most pleased with, is we have upperclassmen leadership, and we have young freshmen who are out there competing and wanting to be a part of that crew. Golden Gophers Ride Bonus-Point Victories to Win Over Maryland
MINNEAPOLIS – No. 10 Minnesota (7-2, 2-2 B1G) won eight of 10 matches, including each of the final six, in a 30-6 victory over Maryland (3-6, 1-5) Friday night at Maturi Pavilion.
The Golden Gophers got bonus-point victories from seniors Patrick McKee, Garrett Joles and Isaiah Salazar, as well as sophomore Bennett Tabor, to improve to 7-1 all-time against the Terrapins, including a 5-0 mark since Maryland joined the Big Ten. After shutouts in 2019 and 2021, Minnesota has now outscored Maryland 123-6 in the last three meetings.
McKee, ranked 14th by Intermat, set the tone for the night with a dominant 16-0 tech fall over Tommy Capul in the opening match at 125 pounds. BONUS POINTS CARRY HUSKERS TO WIN OVER ILLINOIS
Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 6 Nebraska wrestling team used four bonus-point victories and an overtime decision to defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini 28-9 in front of 3,347 fans on Sunday afternoon.  With the win, NU secured its fifth-straight dual victory and improved to 10-1 overall (5-1 Big Ten). Illinois fell to 3-7 on the season and 0-4 in Big Ten competition.  The dual against the Fighting Illini opened with No. 15 Caleb Smith against Justin Cardani at 125. Smith earned a takedown and was awarded a penalty point in the first round. After starting the Period 2 on top, Smith was able to ride out to the end of the period and then recorded another takedown in the third period, to earn the 9-2 victory.
At 133, No. 17 Jacob Van Dee wrestled No. 33 Tony Madrigal. Van Dee scored a quick takedown in the first period and recorded over two minutes of riding time before Madrigal escaped. Van Dee led 3-1 to start the second period, but Madrigal was able to ride out, and the two started Period 3 neutral. Women’s wrestling moves toward NCAA championship status, projected for winter 2026

Women’s wrestling on Wednesday took a big step toward becoming the 91st NCAA championship sport, with its projected first NCAA championship occurring in winter 2026.  The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics voted at its meeting Wednesday to recommend Divisions I, II and III sponsor legislation to add a national collegiate women’s wrestling championship. The Association-wide committee oversees the Emerging Sports for Women program, which includes women’s wrestling. 
“We are excited to recommend women’s wrestling as the 91st NCAA championship sport,” said Ragean Hill, chair of the Committee on Women’s Athletics and executive associate athletics director/senior woman administrator at Charlotte. “We are extremely proud of the work that USA Wrestling has done to make this a reality in such a short period of time. Also, a special thank you to the men’s wrestling community for believing in our young women and championing this process.” 
Following the committee’s recommendation, the projected timeline to add a women’s wrestling championship is:

• Each division is expected to review the recommendation and sponsor a proposal by its respective 2024-25 legislative cycle deadline.
• The recommendation also includes establishing a Women’s Wrestling Committee, which would begin its work in January 2025, to allow time to prepare for a championship in winter 2026. 
• If sponsored, the divisions are expected to vote on the proposals during the 2025 NCAA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, Jan. 15-18. 
• If adopted on that timeline, the first women’s wrestling championship would be held in winter 2026. 

Before a women’s wrestling national collegiate championship can be established, funding must be considered by the appropriate financial oversight committees among other competing priorities during the relevant annual budget development cycle.

Penn State, Oklahoma State remain last of the unbeaten

Manheim, Pennsylvania – It took until February, but there’s just two undefeated teams in Division I men’s wrestling left and they’re both sitting at the top of the most recent NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.  
Top-ranked Penn State improved to 8-0 and ran its dual meet win streak to 52 after a 28-7 win over then-No. 7 Ohio State. Oklahoma State moved to 12-0 and rose to No. 2 in the rankings, the highest the Cowboys have been ranked since the final regular season poll of the 2018-19 season, when they were second. The Cowboys beat then-No. 5 Missouri 24-10 and No. 24 Arizona State 28-9 over the weekend.  
Iowa fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after being upended on the road at Michigan 24-11. The Hawkeyes slid one spot to No. 3, while the Wolverines moved up three spots, re-entering the Top 10 for the first time December 21. Iowa State stayed put at No. 4 after beating then-No. 17 West Virginia 29-11.
Other action in the Top 10 saw Nebraska (10-1) beat Illinois 28-9. Ohio State rebounded from its loss at Penn State to beat No. 14 Rutgers 22-12. No. 8 NC State beat rival North Carolina 33-6. Cornell beat Columbia 32-9, but slid one spot to No. 10 after Michigan jumped over the Big Red.  
Other ranked matches of interest over the past week were saw Northern Iowa beat West Virginia 26-12. The Mountaineers also lost to No. 4 Iowa State on their trip through the Midwest, while then-No. 20 Little Rock won its third ranked dual of the season, beating then No. 23 Cal Poly 21-12. No. 24 Arizona State edged No. 21 Oregon State 17-16. Little Rock moved up two spots to No. 18 this week, establishing another program high in the school’s fifth season of wrestling.  
The Big Ten leads with eight teams ranked this week, followed by the Big 12, which has seven teams in the Top 25. The Pac-12, with only six wrestling members, has five of its schools ranked. The ACC has three and the EIWA with two. Campbell, which topped SoCon rival Appalachian State this past week, sits just outside the Top 25. Inaugural Season Of Girls Varsity Wrestling In Wyoming Was A Success For Sheridan
Regardless if they won a state championship or not, history was made in Wyoming as girls varsity wrestling took to the mat for the first time this season. In the past, girls that wanted to wrestle competed and practiced against boys, but not everyone was ok with that idea. 
Eventually enough schools in the state were able to put a varsity girls team together and before this season started, the Wyoming High School Activities Association gave the sport the green light to begin practice and competition. Becca Oetken of Sheridan ended up winning the state championship in the 235 pound weight class.

In a historic move that echoes the national trend, the LHSAA membership voted to establish a division for girls’ wrestling starting in the 2024-25 season. This groundbreaking decision aligns Louisiana with 40 other states that already offer a dedicated division for girls’ wrestling. Oklahoma University Women’s Wrestling Club in the Works
Last week we did a story on the “Cowgirl Wrestling Club”, a grassroots effort by some students at Oklahoma State to establish a wrestling club team with hopes of eventually becoming an official part of the Oklahoma State Athletic Department. This week, we’ve learned that a few students at OU are looking to do something similar. Maureen Manzon, the treasurer of the University of Oklahoma Women’s Wrestling Club wrote the following on the group’s GoFundme. “I hope this message finds you well. My name is Maureen Manzon, and I am reaching out on behalf of Leslea Helm and a group of fourteen determined young women, including myself, at the University of Oklahoma. We all share a collective dream of establishing the Women’s Wrestling Club on our campus. 
Leslea Helm, our passionate leader, is driving this initiative with a vision to create an empowering space for women in wrestling. Why Are High Schoolers Winning College Opens?
High schoolers are winning college opens, Olympic fever is here, and six regionals are set for the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships
Carley Ceshker made the wrestling world take notice when she won the 123-pound bracket at the 2022 Midlands Championships as a high school freshman. The Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, native made the 90-minute trip to the prestigious tournament that included a women’s division for the first time.  “Going into the tournament I didn’t know much about Midlands,” Ceshker said. “It was just another tournament. I could feel nerves once I got there but I also didn’t know the girls I was wrestling. I was just going out there and doing what I do. It was a good turnout.” A good turnout might be an understatement. She won three matches including a 7-6 victory over North Central’s Amani Jones and a 31-second fall over Augsburg’s Gabby Skidmore.
Jones is a two-time NCWWC All-American, 2023 national finalist, and 2023 U20 World bronze. Skidmore is a four-time All-American and a 2020 WCWA finalist.  That trend continued this season as multiple high schoolers — including multiple freshmen — are finding success at college opens.  “I think it’s a result of girls being exposed to quality coaching at a younger age than ever before,” North Central coach Joe Norton said. “This is thanks to the growth of girls and women’s wrestling across the country. It’s awesome to see some of the best clubs in America with girls now training there full-time. You didn’t see women in the best clubs five to 10 years ago like you do now. USA Wrestling’s Girls High School Development Committee has released its 2023 National High School Girls Wrestling Guide to educate and inspire the nation about the explosive growth of girls high school wrestling in our nation. This 122-page online document provides extensive history on the development of girls high school wrestling, as noted on the cover, “compiled and shared in celebration of the growth of girls wrestling across the nation.” This guide is posted on USA Wrestling’s website, and has been provided to all of the major organizations within the wrestling community. People can view the guide in an on-line format, or download a PDF of the entire document. 
The National High School Girls Wrestling Guide
The document was developed by Andrea Yamamoto and Joan Fulp of the USA Wrestling Girls High School Development Committee, with cooperation from numerous stakeholders. It was designed by accomplished graphic artist Victoria Francis, a USA Wrestling Senior World Team member with an extensive career in wrestling.
Included in the document are data from each state in the nation, including a list of 2023 state champions, the NWHOF Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award winners from the state, a list of college programs in the state, and a participation growth chart for the state in terms of high school wrestling participants and USA Wrestling membership.
