Lehigh Mountain Hawks Use Bonus Points To Top Navy 23-15 For Fourth Straight Victory
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 17 Lehigh completed a 4-0 homestand to open the new year with a 23-15 victory over No. 18 Navy inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Salute to Service, presented by Weis Markets      . The teams split the 10 bouts 5-5 but a 3-0 edge in bonus point wins, including two falls and a technical fall lifted the Mountain Hawks to their fourth consecutive dual victory.
Sophomore Sheldon Seymour (125) and junior Max Brignola (157) delivered Lehigh’s two falls, while junior Michael Beard (197) came through with his NCAA Division I-leading 11th technical fall of the season.
Lehigh is now 4-3 on the dual season and has won three straight duals against its second most-contested rival to take a 56-48 lead in the all-time series. “Bonus points are always big,” Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. “That’s our team. All these matches the rest of the year are probably going to be 5-5 or 6-4 so we have to win when we can. We left some matches out there that we could have won. We need to change that and get better in some positions. … story at … Lehighsports.com/Mountain-hawks-use-bonus-points-to-top-navy-23-15-for-fourth-straight-victory

Bucknell Opens Homestand with 41-9 Victory Over Morgan State
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell wrestling team secured a big 41-9 win over Morgan State Saturday at Davis Gym, securing eight of 10 bouts and posting bonus points in each win. It was the team’s fourth straight dual victory to improve to 5-3 (1-0 EIWA) on the season.
The Bison registered three tech falls, two major decisions and three pins over the Bears (1-11), who are in their first season of competition since the program was brought back after a 25-year hiatus. Morgan State’s nine points came from a narrow 7-6 decision at 125 and an injury default at 157.
Myles Takats (174), Mikey Bartush (184) and Logan Deacetis (197) each recorded pins in consecutive order, helping the Bison extend their lead and seal the match. Each had sizable leads before their pins, and each did it in the second period.
Morgan State’s early 3-0 leads came by way of a comeback, as Bucknell’s Grayson McLellan jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period of the 125 bout. The Bears’ Isaac Sheehan whittled his way back into it and took the lead with a takedown in the final 17 seconds of the third to win it. The Bison quickly erased the deficit with back-to-back tech falls and a major decision over the next three bouts. … story at … Bucknellbison.com/Wrestling-opens-homestand-with-41-9-victory-over-morgan-state

Warner: None of us ‘deserve’ anything, in life or on the wrestling mat

By Tristan Warner

As the holiday season came and went, I started thinking about a potentially troubling word that we all commonly use. Harmless when interpreted at face value, I started mulling over the possibility that it could be conveying the wrong message.
If you care to take a plunge down this rabbit hole with me for a moment, it may enlighten you, or perhaps dishearten you, as to how we may be doing a disservice to America’s young people if we allow the usage of this word to become a hindrance.
The problematic word I am rambling about is “deserve.”
When used in reference to basic human necessities, such as in the case of Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs, this word serves a legitimate purpose. Let me be clear that I am not questioning its usage in that regard.
This column appeared in the January issue of WIN Magazine. Click on the cover or call 888-305-0606 to subscribe.
However, in contemporary context, the word is often unfortunately used in a manner that assumes things always work out the way we desire them to and infuses a sense of entitlement, simultaneously.
Let me elaborate.
Over the holidays, I heard this word used several different ways, but each time it seemed to insinuate the same underlying principle:
“I deserved that promotion.”
“You deserve to make more money.”
“My son deserved to win that match.”
“She deserves to be recognized for her efforts.”
Notice that the word deserve is often used in instances to offset the fact that what the speaker is saying the subject deserved in fact did not come to fruition.
Not always, but if you think deeply about this, we often use the word deserve in this way. It implies that everybody should get exactly what they think they have earned in this life, and if they do not, then it is simply not fair.
Or it can also be used as a sour-grapes projection of bitterness to insinuate that somebody else received an outcome that should rightfully belong to us instead.
In either case, you can see where the word can become troubling when the message being vocalized to young people is that you are entitled to any sort of status, title, achievement, or accomplishment in life.  The harsh reality is that you cannot always attain these desires. The sooner you learn that the better.
This is not meant to sound overly pessimistic, but it is an important concept to be grasped at a young age.
When kids grow up thinking they deserve to win, they deserve a scholarship, they deserve a spot in the starting lineup, or they deserve a high-paying job as soon as they graduate, it sets them up for failure in the long term.
Or, more precisely, it sets them up to not know how to handle perceived “failure” in a healthy or productive manner.
Because when you look at the big picture, losing a match is not a failure if you gained a valuable lesson from it. Likewise, not receiving a promotion or not being hired for the job you wanted is not a failure if you keep pushing forward and may be setting yourself up for something bigger and better in the future. … story at … WIN-magazine.com/None-of-us-deserve-anything-in-life-or-on-the-wrestling-mat

Appalachian State Sweeps The Citadel, Greensboro College

BOONE, N.C. — App State Wrestling started a Sunday sweep in Varsity Gym by opening its SoCon schedule with a dominant victory against The Citadel.
Ranked 23rd by FloWrestling and 24th by The Open Mat, the Mountaineers took nine of 10 matches in a 33-4 victory against the Bulldogs before five underclassmen were part of App State’s lineup for the first time in a 51-3 victory against Division III Greensboro College.
Six wrestlers from App State (4-2) recorded the first dual wins of their careers against Greensboro: Anthony Conetta (fall at 157), Drake Acklin (fall at 165), Gunnar Pool (major decision at 197), James Bankston (fall at heavyweight), Noah Luna (by forfeit at 125) and Kai O’Dell (by forfeit at 149). Ethan Oakley (133) and Tomas Brooker (184) also had pins against Greensboro to cap 2-0 days by the customary starters, while Oren Bost (174) won by tech fall in his second career start.
Facing The Citadel, which arrived in Boone with an 8-2 overall record, App State followed a pair of overtime wins by its ranked wrestlers at 149 and 157 pounds with five decisive victories from Will Miller (8-0 major decision at 165), Luke Uliano (16-0 tech fall at 174), Brooker (12-4 major decision at 184), Carson Floyd (8-1 decision at 197) and Jacob Sartorio (14-5 major decision at heavyweight).
Chad Bellis opened the dual with a 12-2 major decision at 125, giving him his first non-forfeit win in a dual, and Oakley recorded a tiebreaking takedown with 53 seconds left in a 4-1 decision against George Rosas at 133. After The Citadel won by major decision at 141 pounds, Cody Bond used an escape in the first Tiebreaker-1 overtime period to move ahead in a 2-1 decision against Jeff Boyd, and Tommy Askey overcame an early 6-0 deficit to win a 12-9 decision on a Sudden Victory takedown.
Boyd, a West Virginia transfer whose third-place finish at the Navy Classic included two ranked wins and a 1-0 loss to top-ranked Ridge Lovett from Nebraska, successfully escaped four single-leg holds following shots that had Bond on the verge of regulation takedowns. After a scoreless Sudden Victory overtime period with the match tied at 1-all (because of matching escapes in regulation), it went to a pair of 30-second Tiebreaker-1 periods (with each wrestler having a choice of how to begin the 30 seconds).
Bond needed only 9.2 seconds to deliver an escape … rest of story at … APPstatesports.com/Wrestling-sweeps-the-citadel-greensboro-college

Gratitude Key for Erisman in Little Rock’s Growth
Little Rock has become anything but a little program during the 2023-24 season. Although Little Rock’s program is still taking baby steps, the program has been setting records each week. “There is a big gratitude for all the guys for believing in what we are doing and they have bought in so many different ways,” coach Neil Erisman said. “We always believed we could be this type of team and it’s fun to see it come together.” Little Rock’s achievements have come in various ways, including nine dual wins and counting, being ranked top 25 for the first time, finishing top 10 at multiple tournaments, and more. The Trojans have been able to create these records while competing in its fifth season. “It starts with the quality and character of the kids we are recruiting,” Erisman said. “We get the right guys who love what we talk about, what we believe in, and jump wholeheartedly into it.”
Even though Little Rock continues to rise, it was not always smooth sailing for the Trojans. First, Erisman and the squad had to celebrate the small victories.  “It started with celebrating that we didn’t get tech falled in a match,” Erisman said. “Through that, it gave the guys a real sense of gratefulness.” In addition, Erisman and his staff had to make sure to keep confidence flowing high despite tough times. Lastly, Erisman stated the toughest thing about building Little Rock is having no mentors for the wrestlers. “In the end, the culture of your team is who they are when the coaches are not around,” Erisman said. “When you have a group of young kids coming in and buying into a dream, they don’t know it and haven’t been through it. Everything they were doing,  they were learning for the first time.” … story at … Intermatwrestle.com/Gratitude-key-for-erisman-in-little-rocks-growth

Little Rock Wrestling Knocks Off #24 Arizona State, Program’s First Win Over a Ranked Team
Historic win marks a turning point in Little Rock’s young journey as a team

LITTLE ROCK – The Little Rock wrestling team has just knocked off its first ranked opponent in program history, and what better way to do it than in front of over 1,000 fans at home for their conference opener against Arizona State. After notching historic moment after historic moment over the last year – over the last five years since the Trojans first stepped onto the mat for the first time, really – Little Rock has now proved itself one of the top teams in the country.
“What was not to celebrate?” asked head coach Neil Erisman following the match. “It was our first big-time win for our program. How about Arkansas wrestling – doing things that weren’t imaginable even 10 years ago, and now we’ve got wrestling at every level. What a night.”
The night certainly ended on a high note, yet Arizona State started off with the upper hand, taking four of the first five bouts. Although Nasir Bailey claimed his match by decision over a ranked Sun Devil, the visitors had 13 team points to Little Rock’s 3. The tide turned after the teams returned from intermission and Joseph Bianchi stepped up for his bout at 165 pounds. Despite trailing 6-1 going into the final two minutes, the older of the two Bianchis on the roster went into work mode, pushing the match to sudden victory overtime and collecting the final takedown to win 11-8.
The Trojans took the next two: Tyler Brennan by decision and Triston Wills by major decision to tie the dual 13-13. That string of victories was even more notable since the three – Bianchi, Brennan, and Wills – are all redshirt seniors set to be honored on Senior Day in two weeks. ”It was the guys that have been here from the beginning that got the ball rolling,” said Coach Erisman. “It was a great moment, looking at Joey and Tyler and Triston and going, I remember when that went the other way. I’m so thankful for those guys and that they stayed the course.”
But what sealed the deal for Little Rock was Stephen Little’s dominant 25-10 technical fall to give the Trojans … story at … LRtrojans.com/Little-rock-wrestling-knocks-off-24-arizona-state-programs-first-win-over-a-ranked-team

ASU Wrestling Upping Commitment Level After ‘Frustrating’ Loss To ISU
Arizona State wrestling coach Zeke Jones said the Sun Devils have had “a great two-week cycle” after a 28-10 loss to Iowa State

It was after a 28-10 loss to #5 Iowa State on Jan. 5 that Arizona State coach Zeke Jones let his Sun Devil squad know that he wasn’t satisfied with their fight or their toughness.
ASU lost eight of 10 bouts, two by technical fall and six others by six, four, four, five, seven and one point. The Sun Devils bounced back two days later with a 43-0 shutout at Cal Bakersfield to improve their midseason record to 2-3, but Jones made sure the tone was set and the message was heard. “Yeah, it was frustrating … just not finishing out the matches for a variety of reasons,” he said. “But it’s been a great two-week cycle. That’s part of the learning processes. When you get 10 to 15 matches under your belt in the season, you know exactly what you need to work on. And then those that go back and work on it improve the fastest — that’s part of this phase right now is correcting those mistakes and the team really has responded.” One of the losses was fifth-ranked All-America Jacori Teemer falling 9-5 to #11 Cody Chittum. Jones said Teemer has answered the wake-up call. … story at … Flowrestling.org/ASU-wrestling-upping-commitment-level-after-frustrating-loss-to-isu

Wyoming Wrestling Controls Dual En Route to 22-12 Victory Over Wolverines
OREM, Utah (1/20/24) –Sloan Swan hasn’t wrestled a whole bunch this season for the University of Wyoming. The 157-pound freshman has competed in a couple tournaments and a couple duals but hasn’t been a consistent fixture in the lineup. Swan made another start Saturday at Utah Valley. And his impressive come-from-behind performance solidified a strong start and catapulted a strong finish for the Cowboys. Wyoming ended up topping the Wolverines, 22-12, inside Lockhart Arena. The victory improves the Pokes to 5-5 on the season and 3-3 in Big 12 action, while the loss drops Utah Valley to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play. “Sloan was down 5-0 going into the third period and then scored 17 points,” head coach Mark Branch said. “That’s inspiration, and that really lifted the team up. Those things play a factor in a dual setting.”
Swan logged a 17-7 major decision over Alex Emmer after, as Branch said, he was down 5-0 with just two minutes of the match remaining. The sizable rally improved Swan to 9-4 on the year. Swan’s victory cemented a strong start for Wyoming, which won four of the first five matches. No. 4 Jore Volk (125) began the match by moving to a team-best 18-4 record after a 15-0 technical fall of Yusief Lillie. Garrett Ricks (133) took a similar approach to Swan. He carded a flurry of third-period points en route to a 16-5 major decision of Kase Mauger that moved Ricks to 8-6. … story at … GOwyo.com/Wrestling-controls-dual-en-route-to-22-12-victory-over-wolverines
