Newberry Wrestling Ends Senior Night With A Win
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Men’s wrestling clinches the two seed in the Conference Carolinas east division with their win tonight over Mount Olive 37-9. Prior to the regulation matches, seniors Will Evans and Armando Acosta wrestled in two exhibition matches at 157 and 184. Will Evans claimed the first fall of the night against the Trojans in 3:14. Not far behind him, Acosta also claimed a fall in similar fashion in 3:35. Both Evans and Acosta were recognized tonight as seniors, ending their collegiate career on the highest note. Zach Shupp was also recognized during tonights ceremony after a decorated career as a wolf. Shupp came out firing on all cylinders, barely giving his opposition an inch. Wrapping up his regular season career, Shupp defeated Mount Olive’s Lens Mathurin by 17-2 tech fall in a time of 4:29 to give the Wolves a 5-0 lead. After a handful of take downs by freshman Ben Guilliam, he claimed his second fall of his collegiate career tonight in a time of 4:40, to extend the Wolves lead to 11-0. The next win came from none other than 149 stud Devan Moore. Moore battled Mount Olive’s Dallas Wilson for the first period but held on claiming 7-6 decision victory to give Newberry a 14-6 lead. Appalachian State Wrestling Takes Care of Keydets In SoCon Dual
BOONE, N.C. — App State Wrestling recorded a bounce-back victory Sunday, taking eight of 10 matches in a 32-7 conference win against VMI in Varsity Gym. All eight recent starters who were in the lineup for the Mountaineers (5-3, 2-1 SoCon) posted victories against the Keydets (7-8, 1-3),
Carson Floyd overcame an early VMI takedown to score the next eight points before he delivered a first-period pin at 197, while Tommy Askey (157) and Will Miller (165) were responsible for back-to-back tech falls. Chad Bellis contributed a win via a major decision at 125, and two of App State’s four wins by decision came from Cody Bond (149) and Tomas Brooker (184).
The closest matches of the day occurred at 141, as Ike Byers won a 2-1 decision in the Tiebreaker-1 overtime period, and at heavyweight, with Jacob Sartorio overcoming an early 7-0 deficit in a 16-14 decision.
Sartorio cut his deficit against Tyler Mousaw to 7-4 by the end of the first period and pulled within 7-6 on a reversal before Mousaw executed a second-period reversal of his own. Sartorio had another takedown later in that period and trailed 12-9 after conceding an escape to open the third period.
A takedown from Sartorio with 1:12 left evened the score at 12-all, and he turned that advantage into four near-fall points to seize control. A late reversal from Mousaw accounted for the final margin.

Six Pins Help #2 Lander Down #22 Montevallo
GREENWOOD – The second-ranked Lander Wrestling team had a season-high six pins, with five of them coming in less than 90 seconds and all of them coming in the first period, as the Bearcats downed the 22nd-ranked Montevallo Falcons, 48-3, in a match that lasted just under 50 minutes.
Lander improved to 14-3 overall, a perfect 9-0 in Conference Carolinas action, and 5-0 in the Conference Carolinas Western Division, clinching at least a share of the division title and securing a spot in the inaugural Conference Carolinas Wrestling Tournament on February 17th. Montevallo dropped to 6-7 overall, 4-4 in conference, and 3-2 in division. James Joplin (Greensboro, N.C.) once again wasted no time lighting a spark in the crowd as he got a quick takedown that resulted in a pin in 45 seconds to give Lander a 6-0 lead. Montevallo got on the board with their first and only win at 133 as Elijah Lusk (Merritt Island, Fla.) could not secure a late takedown and fell to the top-ranked wrestler in the weight class, Gabe Hixenbaugh, by a 4-2 decision to cut the Lander lead in half. V.M.I. Keydets take down Presbyterian
CLINTON, S.C. – After falling by close decisions at the 157 and 165 weights to open the match, the VMI wrestling team rallied to win the final eight bouts to earn a dominant 46-6 win over host Presbyterian Saturday afternoon at Clinton High School in Clinton, South Carolina.
The victory marked VMI’s first Southern Conference win of the season to improve the Keydets to 1-2 in conference play and move to .500 overall at 7-7 for the season.
Braxton Lewis got VMI back on track by pinning Brandon Jacoby at 174 pounds in 2:42. Toby Schoffstall and Josh Evans continued the trend by pinning their respective opponents to put VMI up, 18-6, with five bouts to go.

Kaleb Snodgrass and the Chattanooga Mocs earned a Southern Conference road win at Gardner-Webb early Saturday afternoon
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The Chattanooga Mocs roared out to an early advantage in a 29-14 win over the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs early Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena. The Mocs scored early and often to clinch the win by the seventh match.
Starting at 125, they jumped out to a 13-0 lead behind a dominant major decision by Brayden Palmer followed by a near-miss 13-7 decision from Blake Boarman. Isaiah Powe shrugged off a slow start at 141 to get a second period fall.
The hosts bounced back with a decision at 149, but the door was soon slammed shut. Lincoln Heck claimed a decision in the closing moments at 157. Kamdyn Munro dropped in a major before Sergio Desiante clinched the match with a decision of his own at 174.
Gardner-Webb got two big wins at 184 and 197 by tech fall and pin. Kaleb Snodgrass put an exclamation point on the victory with a second period fall.

Aaron Brooks, Penn State Wrestling Rolling Into Showdown With Iowa
Three-time NCAA champ Aaron Brooks has been racking up bonus points for the #1 Penn State wrestling team, which travels Friday to take on #3 Iowa.
Aaron Brooks had to pause on Tuesday to think about his favorite way to win a wrestling match. After a few seconds passed, the three-time NCAA champion still couldn’t settle on an answer between two obvious options. “I don’t know, actually,” Brooks said. “I mean, I don’t mind a tech (fall) because I’m getting more shots in and maybe a turn, but a pin’s like, ‘Alright!’ Go back, drink the Gatorade, whatever it is.” Reading between the lines, Brooks just likes to dominate. He likes to do it with flair, too. Brooks, who’s won 70 percent of his collegiate matches with bonus points, wishes more wrestlers across the country had the same, aggressive mindset as often as he and most of his teammates. But when the Nittany Lions watch other top teams around the country, they don’t see a lot of stylistic similarities.
The Nittany Lions will face off with the rival Iowa Hawkeyes in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday where Penn State’s let-it-fly style will again be up against the Hawkeyes’ much stingier approach. But Iowa’s patient plodding didn’t work against Michigan, where the Hawkeyes lost the opening five bouts without a single takedown to show for them.
Michigan won the dual 24-11. “I wouldn’t say that’s just Iowa, I think that’s a lot of folkstyle (teams),” Brooks said. “I think the way the rules are set up, you don’t have to really go get someone. I think for us, our team, we like to go score points. So I think the refs kind of look at it as ‘Oh, well these guys will score so I’m not gonna make the other guy wrestle.’ So I wouldn’t say that’s even just Iowa. I think that’s a lot of the NCAA.”
Brooks, like NCAA champs David Taylor, Ed Ruth, Jason Nolf, Zain Retherford and Bo Nickal before him, has only benefitted as Penn State’s staff has continued to cultivate bonus-point machines over the last decade-plus. Fifty-six of Brooks’ 80 collegiate bouts have come with bonus points. That includes four majors, a tech and a pin in the NCAA Championships.
So far this year, his first at 197 pounds, Brooks has earned bonus points in every bout. He’s got three pins, a major and has made the most of the three-point takedown with six technical falls, none taking longer than 6:21. He also leads the Big Ten with 40 dual-meet takedowns. “We don’t have a style where we’re trying to figure out how we stop what our opponents do,” Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said. “You know, we’re just trying to do what we do and get better at it. And that’s more of a big-picture philosophy and just you know, how I was taught by my coaches.”

Sanderson isn’t worried about first-year Nittany Lions Aaron Nagao and Bernie Truax after both suffered tough defeats on Friday against Ohio State. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Redshirt senior Jha’Quan Anderson has been named the Southern Conference’s Wrestler of the Month for January, the conference announced on Tuesday. A native of Conyers, Ga., Anderson went 10-0 through the month January. He began the month going 5-0 to come in first place at the184-weightclass at the 2024 Southern Scuffle (Jan. 1-2). He became the first SoCon wrestler to place first at the Scuffle since 2004. DURHAM — Three years ago, stepping onto the mat for his first collegiate match, Jack Wimmer experienced every athlete’s worst nightmare. After months of limited training due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pennsylvania native tore his ACL, MCL, and meniscus during his first bout against the rival North Carolina. Having already fought through a hand injury from high school, Wimmer was discouraged by this potentially career-ending injury. “I immediately knew something was wrong, but I didn’t know how bad it was at first,” said Wimmer. “You never think that something like that can happen to you. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Campbell’s Caleb Hopkins has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for all competition from Jan. 31-Feb. 6. The selection is made by the league office.
Hopkins, who is ranked No. 29 at 184 pounds, went 2-0 last week in two home conference duals. The Palmer, Alaska, product pinned App State’s Tomas Booker in 54 seconds on Feb. 2, earning six points in his victory. Two days later, the graduate student won a 1-0 decision against 27th-ranked Gardner-Webb wrestler Jha’Quan Anderson. Hopkins’ win represented the highest-ranked opponent defeated by a Camel during the week.

Chadron State Eagles stay perfect in RMAC duals
CHADRON, Neb. — A Mason Watt pin in the third match of the dual ended up being the deciding factor in Chadron State’s 21-20 victory by criteria over the Adams State Grizzlies, Friday evening in the Chicoine Center. The victory improves CSC to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. CSC has two duals remaining, one against 1-1 CSU-Pueblo and another against 0-6 Simon Fraser. A victory against the Thunderwolves on Saturday, February 10, would guarantee the Eagles a share of the RMAC title. ”I am beyond proud of the guys,” Head Coach Brett Hunter said. “We battled through sickness all week and we found a way to get it done tonight. This team is special.”
Chadron State’s mainstays this season, Quen Campbell at 133 pounds and Torry Early at 149, were unavailable against the Grizzlies due to sickness.
Beginning at 184 pounds, Keegan Gehlhausen, a sophomore from Pinedale, Wyoming, earned a 9-5 victory, giving the Eagles an early 3-0 lead. Gehlhausen responded from a 4-0 deficit with three takedowns to win the match. The Grizzlies won their first of five matches with a 9-0 major decision at 197 pounds. No. 11 Mountain Cats Pin Kutztown, 31-11, for Seventh Straight Victory
Mason Myers won by fall at 141 lbs., and three-time All-American Jacob Ealy won by technical fall at 149 lbs. to give the 11th-ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers a 17-0 lead after four bouts on their way to a 31-11 PSAC victory at 21st-ranked Kutztown, Friday night. The Mountain Cats, winners of seven consecutive dual meets, are now 12-2 overall and unbeaten in the PSAC at 4-0.
Trevon Gray built a 10-1 second period advantage over Nic Allison at 125 lbs. and went on to a 13-9 victory, before Byron Daubert secured an 8-1 win over Javien DeLeon at 133 lbs. to give the Mountain Cats a 6-0 lead to start.
At 141 lbs., Myers pinned Gary Deyarmin at 2:07 of the opening period and Ealy, ranked third-ranked at 149 lbs., earned a 15-0 technical fall at 3:50 over Ali Alicia to push Pitt-Johnstown’s lead out to 17-0.
Kutztown got on the board at 157 lbs. when 12th-ranked Bailey Gimbor was awarded a stalling point in overtime to hold off Cooper Warshel, 2-1, and seventh-ranked Dalton Gimbor won a 5-1 decision over Dillon Keane at 165 lbs. to narrow the Golden Bears’ deficit to 17-6.
Tony Salopek got three of those points back for the Mountain Cats when he defeated Hunter Horton, 8-5, at 174 lbs., but Kutztown’s third-ranked Matt Weinberg won an 18-3 technical fall at 5:00 over Jake Sabol at 184 lbs. to make it 20-11.
However, Pitt-Johnstown finished strong with bonus point wins at 197 and 285 lbs. KEARNEY, NEBRASKA – Thursday night saw action between two championship-level programs. The dual that has gone on between DII NCAA powerhouse Nebraska Kearney and top-ranked Grand View was sure not to disappoint. The Vikings won the last two out of three meetings but would fall just short 18-17 this time around.

Lander Improves to 12-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Conference Carolinas play while Emmanuel dropped to 5-5 and 3-5 in conference action.

#2 Lander Pins Four; Routs Lincoln Memorial, 44-10
HARROGATE, Tenn. – The second-ranked Lander Wrestling team won their second match in as many days on Friday evening as they used four pins to defeat the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, 44-10, inside Mary Mars Gymnasium. With the win, Lander improves to 13-3 and a perfect 8-0 in Conference Carolinas action. Lincoln Memorial fell to 2-6 overall and in conference action. The Railsplitters got on the board first with a major decision at 125, marking the first time Lander had trailed in a conference dual since trailing 6-0 to Emmanuel on December 1st, 2022. Kaden Kuenzi (Silverton, Ore.) gave the Bearcats the lead back quickly, though, as he earned a first period pin over Hernand Pinto to make it 6-4, Lander. Isham Peace (Okatie, S.C.) added three more points with a 7-1 decision to make it 9-4.
Lincoln Memorial earned a pin at 149 to flip the scoreboard back in their favor at 10-9. However, that would be the last win that the Railsplitters would get. Qwantez Watkins started things off for the Panthers with an 18-3 tech fall over Quinn Richards at 125 pounds. Walker Bell managed the same thing with a 23-6 tech fall over John Carlson at 133 pounds. Jon Ward kept it going at 141 pounds with a 12-9 decision over Weston Hirschi. Southern Virginia’s Elijah Blackwell got the Knights on the scoreboard with a pin over Ferrum’s Joseph Olalde at 149 pounds. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The ninth-ranked Vermont State University Castleton wrestling team continued to build on its historic season Saturday, earning the program’s first-ever victory over perennial powerhouse #7 Johnson & Wales and shutting out #24 Springfield, 47-0.
The Spartans were ready to go from the opening whistle, winning five of the first six bouts against JWU before taking all 10 bouts against Springfield in the second match of the day. Six different Spartans went 2-0 in the dual matches, with a trio of Spartans picking up wins over nationally-ranked opponents in the JWU dual.
The victories improve VTSU Castleton’s record this season to 18-3, tying a program record for wins in a season with two more duals remaining on the schedule. As a team, Averett (20-6, 4-1 ODAC) recorded just one loss against Greensboro (1-8, 1-3 ODAC). The Cougars compiled three pins, two technical falls and two major decisions in their dominant performance. MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Badgers took down the Northwestern Wildcats 30-12, taking seven of 10 bouts Friday night in the UW Field House.
No. 2 Eric Barnett (19-2) once again got the night started for Wisconsin, securing the major decision win over Northwestern’s Massey Odiotti. Barnett secured two takedowns and two near falls, including a four-pointer.
Redshirt freshman Nicolar Rivera and No. 22 Joseph Zargo kept the Badgers hot streak going. Rivera won in a dominant 13-4 major decision win and Zargo won by decision 4-1 in a hard-fought battle.
True freshman Zan Fugitt made his Big Ten dual debut and secured his first collegiate dual win, taking down Kolby McClain by major decision. He secured a takedown in each period.

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 6 Nebraska wrestling team used four bonus-point victories and an overtime decision to defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini 28-9 in front of 3,347 fans on Sunday afternoon. With the win, NU secured its fifth-straight dual victory and improved to 10-1 overall (5-1 Big Ten). Illinois fell to 3-7 on the season and 0-4 in Big Ten competition. The dual against the Fighting Illini opened with No. 15 Caleb Smith against Justin Cardani at 125. Smith earned a takedown and was awarded a penalty point in the first round. After starting the Period 2 on top, Smith was able to ride out to the end of the period and then recorded another takedown in the third period, to earn the 9-2 victory.
At 133, No. 17 Jacob Van Dee wrestled No. 33 Tony Madrigal. Van Dee scored a quick takedown in the first period and recorded over two minutes of riding time before Madrigal escaped. Van Dee led 3-1 to start the second period, but Madrigal was able to ride out, and the two started Period 3 neutral. Women’s wrestling moves toward NCAA championship status, projected for winter 2026

Women’s wrestling on Wednesday took a big step toward becoming the 91st NCAA championship sport, with its projected first NCAA championship occurring in winter 2026. The NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics voted at its meeting Wednesday to recommend Divisions I, II and III sponsor legislation to add a national collegiate women’s wrestling championship. The Association-wide committee oversees the Emerging Sports for Women program, which includes women’s wrestling.
“We are excited to recommend women’s wrestling as the 91st NCAA championship sport,” said Ragean Hill, chair of the Committee on Women’s Athletics and executive associate athletics director/senior woman administrator at Charlotte. “We are extremely proud of the work that USA Wrestling has done to make this a reality in such a short period of time. Also, a special thank you to the men’s wrestling community for believing in our young women and championing this process.”
Following the committee’s recommendation, the projected timeline to add a women’s wrestling championship is:
- Each division is expected to review the recommendation and sponsor a proposal by its respective 2024-25 legislative cycle deadline.
- The recommendation also includes establishing a Women’s Wrestling Committee, which would begin its work in January 2025, to allow time to prepare for a championship in winter 2026.
- If sponsored, the divisions are expected to vote on the proposals during the 2025 NCAA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, Jan. 15-18.
- If adopted on that timeline, the first women’s wrestling championship would be held in winter 2026.
Before a women’s wrestling national collegiate championship can be established, funding must be considered by the appropriate financial oversight committees among other competing priorities during the relevant annual budget development cycle.
