Big 12 Weekly Recap (2/18/2025)
This week saw some great under-the-radar duals from the Big 12, with a handful coming down to the last match. Northern Colorado and Iowa State both hand nailbiters and came out on top. Wyoming wrapped up one of their best dual seasons in recent history. Oklahoma didn’t have as many duals but finished with their best winning percentage since 2014. Not to be outdone, Northern Iowa has matched their most dual wins since 2014 and could match their 1988 season with 14 wins.
Notable Results:
Friday (2/14): Full Results
Wyoming over Air Force (27-9)
141: Carter Nogle Dec. #33 Cole Brooks (6-3)
After a 4-7 start to the season, true freshman Nogle is quietly 11-2 in his last thirteen matches and scored a ranked win here. With a bonus rate of 52% and 13 falls on the season, he could be a sleeper to look out for in March.
Northern Colorado over Utah Valley (22-21)
141: #2 Andrew Alirez Maj. #18 Haiden Drury (12-3)
While there weren’t too many notable results individually, this dual came down to the wire in an entertaining matchup. Starting at 133, Northern Colorado reeled off four consecutive wins to build a 16-0 lead. Utah Valley won three of their own before another UNCO bonus point win at 197 and a UVU win at heavyweight. Coming down to 125, Bridger Ricks put up an 18-3 tech but wasn’t able to get the fall in a wild conference matchup.
Iowa State over South Dakota State (20-15)
285: #27 Daniel Herrera Dec. Luke Rasmussen (8-7)
This was another dual that didn’t have any major upsets, … more at … https://intermatwrestle.com/articles.html/college/big-12/big-12-weekly-recap-2182025-r100024/

This Week in Women’s Collegiate Wrestling (2/18/2025)|
It was a bit of a light week as far as action goes, with most NCAA teams preparing for regionals next weekend and many NAIA teams doing the same for their conference tournaments coming the following weekend. However, there were still a few notable highlights to wrap up the regular season.
Baker hosts Inaugural Jimmy May Open
Previously known as the Baker Open, the Wildcats hosted the first-ever Jimmy May Open tournament to close out their regular season. Jimmy May is a long-time coach and was integral in the formation of the men’s program at Baker, which started in 2009. May still serves as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams at Baker. Baker closed things out with 7 placers, including two runner-up finishes from Kylee Slyter at 110 lbs and Jaclyn Daley at 207 lbs.
Missouri Valley also attended and had four placers, including a championship finish from late-season transfer Xochitl Mota-Pettis at 131 lbs. Mota-Pettis finished first after four technical falls in a row, which put her in the finals. There, she got her first pin on the day against #6 Devin Patton of William Penn. Speaking of the Statesmen, they also had an excellent day, with 8 wrestlers in the finals, including 3 different teammate matchups in the finals at 103, 124, …more at … https://intermatwrestle.com/articles.html/women/this-week-in-womens-collegiate-wrestling-2182025-r100022/

Behind seven bonus-point wins, the Nebraska wrestling team took down the Boilermakers 35-6 on Sunday night, closing the regular season with a victory. Purdue fell to 10-6 (3-5 Big Ten) as the Big Red claimed eight bouts, and NU heads to the Big Ten Championships off a two-dual win streak.
The No. 5 Huskers (11-3, 6-2 Big Ten) will finish tied for third in conference standings, as Lenny Pinto and Ridge Lovett made their marks with dominant tech. falls.
Starting at 157, it was a top-10 battle between sophomores on the mat. No. 4 Antrell Taylor faced No. 7 Joey Blaze, the Boilermaker the first on the board, scoring with an early escape in the second period. Taylor evened the score with an escape of his own in the third, and came out with a last-second takedown to win the bout, 4-1.
On the mat at 165, No. 8 Christopher Minto opened against Stoney Buell with a takedown. The redshirt freshman kept control and tallied four points nearfall to close the first period. No. 2 Iowa solidifies spot with rivalry win over Oklahoma State
NEWTON, Iowa — With the dual-meet season in the rearview mirror and the focus shifting to the postseason, the Feb. 25 rankings update will serve as the final dual-meet team rankings for the 2024-25 season. On the strength of a huge home dual win against rival Oklahoma State (13-1) Sunday, No. 2 Iowa (13-1) handed the Cowboys their only defeat of the season, 21-16. Penn State remained in the top spot after finishing the season with a 15-0 record, while OSU stayed in the No. 3 spot in WIN’s Dual Rankings. A slight shakeup in WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) occurred this week as Nebraska slid into the No. 3 spot ahead of No. 4 Oklahoma State, while Penn State remained No. 1 and Iowa No. 2, respectively. WIN’s TPI compiles a point total with each team’s ranked wrestlers similar to NCAA tournament scoring, whereas the Dual Rankings rates teams based on full line-ups.
The following is a breakdown of those individual TPI points per ranking: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by one and a half points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and one point for those ranked 17-20.
Penn State features three top-ranked wrestlers in WIN’s TPI: Tyler Kasak (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) and Carter Starocci (184). Iowa features two No. 1-rated wrestlers: Drake Ayala (133) and Stephen Buchanan (197). The third-ranked Iowa men’s wrestling team defeated No. 2 Oklahoma State, 21-16, on Sunday in Iowa City. It was the Hawkeyes fifth straight win over the Cowboys and Iowa has won nine of the last 11 meetings.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated No. 2 Oklahoma State, 21-16, on Sunday night on Mediacom Mat at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was the Hawkeyes fifth straight win over the Cowboys and Iowa has won nine of the last 11 meetings. The Hawkeyes won six bouts and got bonus points at three weights. “Good performance tonight as a team,” said head coach Tom Brands. “Still getting better.”
Oklahoma State got the dual at 125 pounds with a major decision from No. 4 Troy Spratley over Joey Cruz, 17-3. At 133, Iowa responded with a major decision of its own from Drake Ayala over Rin Sakamoto, 11-1. OSU Wrestling: Hawkeyes Beat Cowboys 21-16 in Iowa City
It’s the second straight season that Iowa ends the Cowboys’ unbeaten run.
For the second straight season, the Cowboys’ undefeated run comes to an end at the hands of their rival Hawkeyes, and the dual’s biggest upset wasn’t short on storylines. Oklahoma State lost to Iowa 21-16 on Sunday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes had a 14-11 lead heading into the 184-pound match that featured Dustin Plott taking on Angelo Ferrari, A.J. Ferrari’s younger brother. The two had an excellent match that ended with a Ferrari takedown in sudden victory.
To get to that point, Ferrari had a 3-2 lead in the third period when he selected bottom. That proved to be a mistake, though, as Plott rode Ferrari the entire period and secured a riding-time point to tie the match. The ride had a few slick scrambles that Plott always came out in control on. It felt the momentum was starting to shift his way after Ferrari took him down in the third period. Like his older brother, Angelo wrestles low, making it tough to get to his legs. But with how Plott rode Ferrari for the entire third, you felt good about Plott’s chances in ride outs. In sudden-victory, Ferrari got in on an initial shot that led to an impressive scramble. It looked like Plott was starting to come out on the right end of it, but a whistle was blown for a potentially dangerous hold, sending the wrestlers back to the middle of the mat. Then Ferrari got in on another shot and was able to finish. … more at … https://pistolsfiringblog.com/osu-wrestling-hawkeyes-beat-cowboys-21-16-in-iowa-city/

In front of a sold-out crowd of fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the No. 3 Iowa Hawkeyes defended their house against the fiery, deep Oklahoma State Cowboys 21-16 headlined by an upset win from true freshman Angelo Ferrari over All-American Dustin Plott at 184 pounds. Ferrari took the mat in place of starter Gabe Arnold with the Hawks leading 14-11 following bonus point victories from Drake Ayala and Mikey Caliendo at 133 and 165 pounds respectively as well as decision wins from Kyle Parco and Jacori Teemer. The young Hawk, though, quickly stole the spotlight.
His second-period takedown against Plott brought the crowd to their feet, and, despite Plott’s hard ride in the third to force sudden victory, Ferrari never let up. He initiated two scrambles in the first minute of sudden victory with the first resulting in a potential dangerous situation. The second attempt proved to be different. Ferrari picked off Plott’s ankle and then rolled around the side of his Cowboy foe for the biggest win of the dual, 6-3. … more at … https://www.ncaa.com/live-updates/wrestling/d1/angelo-ferraris-upset-over-all-american-dustin-plott-elevates-no-3-iowa-past-no-2-oklahoma

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State rode a wave of momentum from Nash Singleton and Ethan Stiles to a 22-14 victory over no. 15 North Carolina in front of a senior day crowd of 1,287.
The Beavers trailed 11-5 early in the dual before the duo of Stiles and Singleton tied it at 11 with back-to-back upset victories over ranked opponents at 141 and 149. After another UNC win, Singleton swung momentum back into Oregon State’s favor at 141. The homegrown talent took no. 22 Jayden Scott to tiebreakers and ultimately won with an escape in the first that put him up 2-1. Stiles knotted the dual up at 11 with his fifth consecutive win and fourth ranked one since the end of January. Stiles knocked off no. 5 Lachlan McNeil 5-3. Kekana Fouret kept the momentum rolling for the orange and black, winning 8-3 over Charlie Darracott. No. 16 UNC Wrestling Grabs Share Of ACC Title With Win Over Stanford
STANFORD, Calif. – The 16th-ranked North Carolina wrestling team closed out the regular season portion of the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule, cruising to a 24-9 victory over No. 17 Stanford Friday night. With the win, Carolina claims a share of the ACC regular season title, splitting the dual meet championship with Virginia Tech and NC State, following the Hokies’ victory over the Wolfpack in Blacksburg this evening. The dual championship is the 19th in program history for the Tar Heels, the first since the 2018-19 campaign. Beginning the night at 157 pounds, Sonny Santiago kickstarted the Tar Heels on the night with a 13-7 decision in the opening match.
Dropping the ensuing bout at 165 pounds in sudden victory, 18th-ranked Joshua Ogunsanya earned arguably the best win of the night, a 15-13 decision over No. 4 Lorenzo Norman. Trailing 9-3 entering the final period, Ogunsanya collected four third-period takedowns, clipping the nation’s fourth-ranked.
After Gavin Kane’s decision at 184 pounds, Carolina secured its next victory at heavyweight, with Nolan Neves claiming the third-period score, earning the 3-2 decision over No. 29 Peter Ming. For Neves, the Tar Heel redshirt-freshman won his third-straight ACC dual, all utilizing late-match scores.
A Stanford forfeit at 125 pounds awarded Carolina six team points, followed by No. 11 Ethan Oakley’s 4-2 victory over sixth-ranked Tyler Knox. Rounding out the match at 149 pounds, No. 5 Lachlan McNeil and 15th-ranked Jaden Abas battled to a 1-1 deadlock after seven minutes. In the overtime period, McNeil converted on the takedown and collected four near-fall points, securing the 8-1 win. No. 10 Hokies take down No. 7 NC State in regular season finale
BLACKSBURG – It was once again unbelievable in Blacksburg on Friday night as No. 10 Virginia Tech wrestling (9-2, 5-1) handed rivals No. 7 NC State (11-2, 5-1) their first conference loss for a share of the conference regular season title in front of a record crowd in Cassell Coliseum. With the win, Tech secured the seventh trophy in the Tony Robie era since taking over the program in 2017.
Electric Ventresca Clinches the Dual
The 2023 All-American No. 5 Eddie Ventresca has returned to form and put himself in title contention with a 4-1 victory over No. 3 Vincent Robinson in thrilling fashion to seal the dual for the Hokies with one match remaining. It was a close first period with both wrestlers nearing a score but to no avail, ending the first period scoreless. Robinson would get on the board first with an escape in the second to which Ventresca responded in kind with an escape of his own in the third. With time dwindling down in regulation tied at one, Ventresca struck again for the deciding – and clinching – takedown to secure the match and the dual meet. … more at … https://hokiesports.com/news/2025/02/22/no-10-hokies-take-down-no-7-nc-state-in-regular-season-finale
