Duke’s Wallace, NC State’s Buesgens Named ACC Co-Wrestlers of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference office announced on Tuesday that Duke’s Aidan Wallace and NC State’s Koy Buesgens were named ACC Co-Wrestlers of the Week, as each wrestler scored a top-25 individual win in conference action last weekend, January 24-26.  
In his lone match of the week, Wallace registered the highest victory of his collegiate career with a 4-1 sudden victory over No. 23 Mac Church of No. 11 Virginia Tech at 165 pounds on Friday, January 24.  With the match tied at 1-1, Wallace earned a takedown with 1:18 on the clock in the first overtime to collect the thrilling win. The victory was the first ACC win of his collegiate career and 22nd win of the season. His 22 wins are tied for the third-most in Duke history for a single season since 1999.

ACC Wrestling Results – mid Jan.

ACC Week One Recap
If week one of ACC duals showed us anything, it is that we should buckle up because the next six weeks are going to be bonkers. We saw two upsets – based on Intermat Dual Rankings – and a shutout for the six teams in action, while UVA made the most of the off week. 
North Carolina had a statement win at home over a top-10 Hokies team. The Tar Heels were propelled by upset wins from Spencer Moore, Josh Ogunsanya, and a huge Gavin Kane pin over TJ Stewart to notch their first win over Virginia Tech in five years. North Carolina did an impressive job of winning the tight bouts; three of their five wins were within a one-takedown score, with two of those coming in sudden victory. Bonus points from the Kane pin and a Lachlan McNeil tech fall proved huge. The Hokies will look to use this week off of conference competition to heal up and return with a full lineup against Duke in two weeks; they were without #12 Connor McGonagle and #1 Caleb Henson in Chapel Hill. 
Not a lot to say about Duke’s trip to NC State. The Wolfpack took care of business and won nine of 10 bouts by bonus points including six tech falls and one pin. Louie Gill filled in at 125 for Vincent Robinson and put on an impressive display; Tyler Tracy got the start at 141 and looked strong. Robinson made his return to the lineup on Monday against Oklahoma State, getting an upset win over #2 Troy Spratley, in what otherwise was a dual the Wolfpack would like to forget. 2025 ACC Wrestling Championship Tickets on Sale Now
CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – Tickets are on sale now for the 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championship, set for Sunday, March 9, at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the campus of Duke University in Durham. Duke is hosting the ACC Wrestling Championship inside Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since 1998. This year, the ACC has seven teams that will compete for the conference crown with the addition of Stanford.
Five ACC teams have been ranked all season long in the NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll, led by the six-time defending champion NC State, which has been in the top 10 all year.

Vince Robinson Named Co-Wrestler of the Week
Charlotte, N.C. – Wolfpack wrestler, Vince Robinson, has been named as one of the Co-ACC Wrestlers of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, January 14.
The redshirt freshman scored the lone win in the team’s dual at third-ranked Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Monday night. No. 19 UNC Wrestling Controls Duke, 40-3
DURHAM, N.C. – Nine North Carolina wrestlers were victorious, as the 19th-ranked Tar Heels defeated Duke, 40-3, in Atlantic Coast Conference action. The win for the Tar Heels is the ninth-straight win over the Blue Devils, and the 24th consecutive win for Carolina in Durham, dating back to 1973. Additionally, the Tar Heels have won 48 of the last 50 duals against Duke.
Carolina began the night with three-straight decisions, jumping out to a 9-0 lead over Duke. Freshman Cameron Stinson Jr. (125) earned his first collegiate dual win (8-1 decision), and ranked wrestlers No. 13 Ethan Oakley (2-0 decision) and No. 24 Jayden Scott (9-2 decision), picked up wins for the Tar Heels.
The Tar Heels followed with six-straight bonus-point victories, beginning with fifth-ranked Lachlan McNeil’s first-period fall over Eli Murray and No. 19 Sonny Santiago collecting the 20-3 technical fall. #6 N.C. State Takes Care of Virginia with a 32-4 Score

Charlottesville, Va. – Sixth-ranked NC State wrestling picked up its second conference win Friday night by claiming nine of 10 bouts on Virginia’s home turf. The 32-4 victory makes it the Pack’s 11th consecutive win over the Cavaliers.
Virginia boasts three ranked wrestlers all within the top-30 of their weight classes. NC State was able to defeat two of the three, but the most notable was for Troy Hohman to re-enter the lineup at 133 lbs and take out No. 27 Gable Porter. In the only ranked against ranked matchup of the night, 33rd-ranked Koy Buesgens was able to defeat No. 28 Jack Gioffre by a tight 4-2 score.
The dual started at 125 pounds with Vince Robinson, now ranked third in the country, kicking off the energy for the Pack. He quickly handled business with Virginia’s Anthony Rossi by securing a technical fall in the second period to put the Pack up 5-0.
At 133 pounds, Troy Hohman re-entered the lineup to face one of three members of the Cavaliers ranked nationally. The redshirt-sophomore was able to secure a takedown in the first period over No. 27 Gable Porter that would allow him to hold an edge throughout the rest of the match. Lehigh Wrestling Adds Heavyweight Owen Trephan To Roster

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh wrestling has added two-time NCAA qualifier Owen Trephan as a graduate transfer for the spring semester. Trephan comes to Lehigh after five-and-a-half years at North Carolina State University, where for the previous two seasons he was the starting heavyweight and an ACC champion for the Wolfpack.  
Trephan owns a 64-17 record over the previous four seasons at NC State. Over the last two seasons, Trephan went 41-12 overall at 285 including a 21-1 dual mark. Trephan won back-to-back ACC titles at 285 in 2023 and 2024, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in both seasons. He went 2-2 in his first NCAA appearance and went 1-2 last season.  
The Summerville, S.C., native is 10-0 so far in the 2024-25 season. Competing unattached he went 4-0 to claim the title at the Nov. 3 Battle at the Citadel, and then went 3-0 to win the 285B pool at the Nov. 10 Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Right before the holidays, Trephan competed unattached in Lehigh’s Sheridan Tournament and went 3-0 to claim the title at 285 at Stabler Arena.  
Trephan is currently ranked ninth nationally in both the FloWrestling and InterMat rankings. Off the mats, Trephan earned Academic All-ACC honors the previous two seasons and is a four-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll. ACC Weekly Recap (1/1/2025)

Two of the three major holiday tournaments have concluded and the ACC had some stellar performances. Stanford kicked off their first Midlands in the ACC by bringing home the team title and three individual titles. Pittsburgh also had a strong showing at the Midlands, finishing fourth as a team and earning two individual titles. North Carolina sent a small contingent of starters to the Soldier Salute, finishing with one finalist and four placers. 
#22 Stanford 
Stanford used their time in Hoffman Estates to put the conference on notice that they are a legitimate threat to win the ACC in their inaugural season. The Cardinal will be loading a lot of hardware on the plane back to Palo Alto. They crowned three individual champions in #10 Tyler Knox (133), #8 Jaden Abas (149), and #7 Lorenzo Norman (174) On top of their gold medals, Knox was named the Dan Gable Outstanding Wrestler and Norman was the Jack Leese Champion of Champions. 
Knox has been fantastic this season and looked strong throughout the tournament, notching two bonus point wins before beating #32 Ryan Miller in the semifinals. He then had a very impressive showing in the finals with a controlling 10-3 win over #16 Dylan Shawver. Abas has seemingly shaken whatever early-season jitters he had and has been on an absolute tear. He was solid all weekend, taking out a sneaky good #19 Cross Wasilewski in the finals. Lorenzo Norman has put the country on notice this season; after his statement at the Midlands, his record stands at 14-1 with his lone loss a tight 4-3 decision to a reinvigorated #3 Dean Hamiti. Norman opened the tournament with tech fall, pin, tech fall before beating #23 Alex Cramer in the semifinals. He made a big impression with a decisive win over #5 Nick Incontrera in the finals. 
They also had podium performances from seven wrestlers to separate themselves in the team race. #13 Hunter Garvin (165) placed third after dropping his semifinal bout in sudden victory to the eventual champion, Tyler Lillard. #22 Nick Stemmet (197) and Jason Miranda (141) both finished in 4th place while Peter Ming (285) finished in fifth. They rounded out the tournament with seventh-place finishes from #28 Grigor Cholakyan (157) and Brock Byers (197) and an eighth-place finish from Collin Guffey (174). 

Pittsburgh
The Panthers turned in an impressive team performance despite losing two key starters to injury in the tournament. #18 Reece Heller (184) added a second Midlands title after being atop the podium in 2023. Heller earned three bonus point victories in his four matches, including a ranked win over #29 Shane Cartegena-Walsh in the finals. #15 Mac Stout (197) claimed his first Midlands title with impressive and consistent performances on both days; he beat #32 Dillon Bechtold 10-3 in the semifinals before taking out #26 Gabe Sollars 13-9 to stand on the top step of the podium.

#6 Wolfpack Takes Top-15 Win Over #12 Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sixth-ranked NC State wrestling edged past 12th-ranked Cornell to close out 2024 with a 20-18 win on Sunday evening.
The Pack came out collecting consecutive statement wins at 197 lbs, 285 lbs, 125 lbs, and 133 lbs to take a 17-0 lead. 29th-ranked Christian Knop returned to the lineup and set the tone for his team when he earned his 5-2 win with a third period buzzer beater takedown over 25th-ranked Mikey Dellagatta. 
With the Wolfpack on the board first, fourth-ranked Isaac Trumble carried over Knop’s energy with a technical fall in the second period over Aiden Compton to secure the first set of crucial bonus points. Trumble previously defeated Compton with bonus points at Cliff Keen just a couple of weeks ago.  Freshman, Louie Gill made his collegiate dual-match debut at 125 pounds with a key victory in a sudden victory bout to put his team up 11-0 through the first three matches. Gill previously lost to his opponent, Marcello Milani, last month by a 5-6 score at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.
The 133 matchup also featured a debut, Kai Orine cutting back down to his two-time All-American weight. The Pack veteran came back in the weight class with a bang by posting a pin fall over his opponent and pushing the team score to 17-0. Cornell collected consecutive wins at 141 lbs, 149 lbs, 157 lbs, and 165 lbs to bring the score to 17-15.

ACC Friday Night Duals return to ACC Network, ACC wrestling streaming schedule also set

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (TheACC.com) – ESPN and the Atlantic Coast Conference have announced that ACC Friday Night Duals will return this season to ACC Network with five straight weeks of conference matchups, beginning on January 24 when No. 7 Virginia Tech travels to Durham, North Carolina, to take on Duke. Veteran play-by-play announcer Shawn Kenney and analyst Rock Harrison will be on the call for the sixth-straight year.
The Friday night series will also feature the conference’s other ranked teams – No. 6 NC State, No. 15 Stanford, No. 19 Pitt and No. 24 North Carolina, among other top ACC programs.
An additional 20 ACC wrestling events will also stream this season on ACCNX.
ESPN platforms will feature nearly 150 collegiate wrestling events from some of the top conferences in the country throughout the 2024-25 NCAA season, including more than 110 events exclusively on ESPN+, the leading sports streaming service.

Duke’s Barket Tabbed ACC Wrestler of the Week

DURHAM, N.C. —Following a weekend where he secured four victories, Duke redshirt sophomore Connor Barket was tabbed ACC Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday, as announced by the league office. 
Seeing action at heavyweight, Barket went 4-0 against eighth-ranked Michigan, 23rd-ranked Utah Valley, American and Presbyterian to move to 13-2 on the season.  Barket is riding a nine-match winning streak heading into the Thanksgiving break. 
On the weekend, Barket opened with an 8-5 decision over Michigan’s Ira Jenkins and then collected a 5-0 victory versus Emmanual Ulrich of American. 
Barket then posted the first ranked victory of his collegiate career as he collected a late escape and takedown to come-from-behind to defeat 33rd-ranked Jack Forbes of Utah Valley.  With a fall at 4:08, Barket closed the weekend with a win over Presbyterian’s Morvens Saint Jean. 
The honor for Barket is the second of his collegiate career as he received ACC Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 23 of last year.

Abbey Wrestling Rallies for Victory over Montevallo
BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey wrestling team earned a third Conference Carolinas victory after rallying to defeat Montevallo 24-18 Tuesday afternoon at the Wheeler Center.
The Crusaders won six total bouts on the day but it was the final three bouts from Kyler Pickard (184), Caleb Moore (197) and Justin Wright that helped the Crusaders seal the victory.
Belmont Abbey improves to 3-1 overall, 3-0 in Conference Carolinas action. Montevallo is 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.

Isaac Trumble Named ACC Wrestler of the Week
Charlotte, N.C. – Wolfpack wrestling’s heavyweight, Isaac Trumble, has been named the ACC Wrestler of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday, November 19.
The redshirt junior went 3-0 across dual-matches on Friday at home and Sunday in New Jersey, which included two ranked wins and two falls over his opponents.
After his statement wins over the weekend Trumble is now ranked sixth in the country at heavyweight according to InterMat and fifth according to FloWrestling. Bramhall voted Wrestler of the Week
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 19) – For a third consecutive week, the University of Mount Olive women’s wrestling team earned Conference Carolinas Wrestler of the Week, as sophomore Savannah Bramhall garnered the accolade on Tuesday afternoon.
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Bramhall produced a 5-1 record in the 160-weight class this week with five falls. On Wednesday night, she delivered a first-round fall over Rihana Carson of Emory & Henry, as the Trojans cruised to 39-10 win in conference action. Over the weekend, Bramhall reached the podium with a third-place finish at the Blue Hose Challenge hosted by Presbyterian. She recorded a 4-1 mark and won her initial two bouts defeating Savannah Pitts of Huntingdon and Kascidy Garren of Presbyterian. Bramhall was pinned in the semifinals of the bracket by No. 10 ranked May Cuyler of Presbyterian. Multi-Talented Kai Orine Taking On New Challenge For NC State Wrestling
After reaching the NCAA podium twice at 133, Kai Orine is moving up to 141 for his final season with the NC State wrestling team
Suffice it to say, Kai Orine might not by your typical college wrestler. Off the mat, Orine is a very talented artist who has worked on designing different graphics and art for the NC State Athletics Department. His undergrad program was Art and Design, and he spent the summer in Prague to fulfill a class requirement. Orine also serves as the in-house barber and tattoo artist for the Wolfpack wrestling team, as he has done all of his own tattoos as well. “I’m very comfortable with how I’ve matured into my position on this team,” said the Imperial, Missouri native. “I’ve been around long enough where I’m very comfortable with being honest with myself about where I am on and off the mat here in Raleigh.” 
On the mat, Orine has been a huge part of the success NC State has had over the last few years as a starter each of the last three years. But due to Covid, the 2024-25 season will serve as a ‘bonus year’ for Orine. “I think this is the most different year thus far,” Orine said. “I think that is because I’ve basically gone through everything there is to go through already in my time here. 
“Being here so long, there is not that much that will surprise me now.” One surprise for Wolfpack fans during the preseason, was the weight class Orine will be at this year. After earning All-American honors and winning an ACC championship each of the last two years at 133 pounds, Orine will be spending his final season in Raleigh at 141. 
It is not unfamiliar territory for Orine. After redshirting the 2019-20 campaign, Orine was at 141 in the shortened Covid season of 2021. #10 Owen Trephan Transfers To Lehigh
Heavyweight All-American contender Owen Trephan will transfer to Lehigh to finish out his college eligibility.
In huge transfer news, heavyweight Owen Trephan will finish his college eligibility at Lehigh University after spending the first five years of his career at NC State. Trephan is a two-time NCAA Qualifier and will enter the rankings at #10 based on his win this year over current #10 Luke Luffman and his wins last year over #16 Jim Mullen and #15 Dayton Pitzer.  
Trephan had the following to say about his transfer to Lehigh:
“NC State will always be home to me, and I’ll forever be a part of the Wolfpack. I’m incredibly grateful for the support Coach Pat and the staff have given me over the years, as well as the memories I’ve made with my teammates. That said, I’m excited for this new opportunity at Lehigh, I believe fully that they give me the best possibility to reach my fullest potential and get on the podium in March.”
Trephan was the starter for NC State the past two seasons but was forced out of the starting lineup after #5 Isaac Trumble moved up to 285 pounds from 197. Trephan will slot into the lineup perfectly for the Mountain Hawks after formerly ranked #8 Nathan Taylor went down with a season-ending injury the first weekend of the season. Mount Olive captures win over Lincoln Memorial, 45-5
MOUNT OLIVE (Nov. 20) – Behind three falls and six forfeits, the Trojans remained undefeated in the early season following a 45-5 victory against Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action at Kornegay Arena. With the win, the University of Mount Olive women’s wrestling program improves to 3-0 overall with an identical record in conference play. The Trojans hold a 2-0 mark all-time series following the second meeting between the sides in the last three years. Meanwhile, Lincoln Memorial drops to 0-1 this season after its first dual of the year.
Mount Olive built an early 20-0 advantage following forfeits in the initial four matches of the meet. In the 131-weight class, sophomore Ayonna McNeill delivered a quick first-round fall versus Calista Gibson before fellow sophomore Angelica Steffy won via pin over Stephanie Castro at 138 to stretch the lead to 30-0. UNC Wrestling: Season Preview

The Tar Heels will look to build on last year’s 3rd place ACC finish
The Carolina wrestling team opens their season this week with a Blue and White Showcase on October 26. Their first tourney will be November 2 at the Southeast Open. With the first matches only a few days away, let’s see what the team will look like this year.
Last year recap:
The Heels finished third in the ACC in duel standings (out of six teams) and tied for 30th in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. They somewhat overachieved as they had been picked fourth in the ACC in most preseason rankings. They finished with an 11-7 duels record, including wins over solid Oregon State and Navy clubs. The Heels had seven national qualifiers compete in the 2024 NCAA tournament. They also had one wrestler earn All-American honors, Lachlan McNeil (149lbs).
Notable losses:
The Heels will lose two key contributors from last year’s team. Tyler Eischens qualified for the national tournament four times (once at 157 lbs, the last three at 174 lbs); Max Shaw was a three-time national qualifier at 197 lbs as well as the ACC Tournament runner-up. Both graduated in the spring. Eischens was on the U23 World Team and is the U23 Nationals 82kg Greco-Roman champion.
Key Additions:
The Heels picked up a pair of transfers that should contribute immediately.
