New faces and national champs shine for Penn State in 40-7 win over Cowboys
Penn State’s depth has been the story of the season for the Nittany Lions, and last weekend was no different.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:Â See how Penn State captured the Division I national title
True freshman Nate Desmond took the mat for the Blue and White at 141 pounds in place of injured All-American Aaron Nagao and All-American redshirt Braeden Davis and nearly majored John Alden, topping the Cowboy 11-4 just three weeks after beating teammate All-American Luke Lilledahl at the Black Knight Invite down at 125 pounds. Desmond could still redshirt if Nagao comes back, but his versatilty and strength across two weights suggests that if he were to start in the postseason, he could make a podium run in his rookie season.Â
Freshman Marcus Blaze also hasn’t needed an adjustment time to college, as the freshman U20 world champ added a win of his own against the Cowboys, pinning No. 22Â Luke Willochell in the second period. Blaze holds a 100% bonus rate on the year but could face a tricky Tyler Knox of Stanford next weekend at the Collegiate Duals for his first All-American test of the season.Â
PJ Duke, who joined Blaze on the U20 world team this year and is also in his first season with the Nittany Lions, impressed as well in just his third dual of the season. He too recorded a pin with his coming against No. 23 Jared Hill in the second period. Duke and teammate Joe Sealy have split time for the Nittany Lions at this weight thus far, though Duke has the head-to-head win against Sealy from the Black Knight Invite that could help inform the starting spot. Duke also has the opportunity to wrestle five duals without burning his redshirt, if the Penn State coaches opt for that route. The fact that the Nittany Lions have Duke, Sealy and two-time All-American and current redshirt Tyler Kasak in one room together at 157 highlights once again how deep this team can be and how these kinds of options allow the program to be flexible across the regular season schedule, especially here in December before Duke’s five “free” matches (before burning his redshirt) run out.Â
Outside of the three new stars, Penn State also saw elite performances from proven stars, including a pin over Sloan Swan from NCAA champion Mitchell Mesenbrink … more at … https://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling-men/article/2025-12-14/4-key-big-ten-college-wrestling-weekend-headlines
National Champion Penn State Crowns Two Individual Titlists to Close out 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia
Carter Starocci and Mitchell Mesenbrink claim individual titles, Josh Barr national runner-up
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.  – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team followed up clinching the NCAA team title earlier in the day by crowning two individual champions in the national finals at the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Carter Starocci and Mitchell Mesenbrink both won in the national finals while freshman Josh Barr finished as NCAA runner-up.
With the titles won by Starocci and Mesenbrink, the Nittany Lions now have 61 NCAA Champions, 40 since Sanderson’s arrival as head coach (this is his 16th season at Penn State). Starocci became the first ever five-time national champion with his win. Carter Starocci was named the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championship Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament’s end and Mitchell Mesenbrink was presented with the NCAA’s season-long Most Technical Falls Award.
The Nittany Lions won the team race, clinching it early Saturday morning, with 177.0 points. Penn State finished a full 60.0 points ahead of second place Nebraska’s 117.0 The team point total of 177.0 is a new NCAA record, breaking the mark of 172.5, set by Penn State last year in Kansas City.
Penn State has now won 12 of the last 15 contest NCAA Championships (no event in 2020) and its fourth straight for the third time since Sanderson became head coach in April of 2009. Sanderson is now second in all-time NCAA history with 12 head coaching titles to his credit. The NCAA record is 15. The Nittany Lions have won the NCAA Championship in 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011 and 1953. Early in the tournament on Friday night, Penn State secured 10 All-Americans for the first time in school history, becoming only the second team in NCAA history to do so (Minnesota, 2001). All of Penn State’s 10 All-Americans placed in the top six. The Nittany Lions now have 264 All-Americans, 101 under Sanderson in just 16 seasons.
Graduate Carter Starocci, the No. 1 seed at 184, took on No. 2 Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa in the first match of the championship finals. The duo worked through the first minute-plus on their feet in the center circle. Starocci gained control of Keckeisen’s foot on the edge of the mat with :50 on the clock but Keckeisen was able to counter and force a stalemate at :32. … more at … https://gopsusports.com/news/2025/03/22/national-champion-penn-state-crowns-two-individual-titlists-to-close-out-2025-ncaa-wrestling-championships-in-philadelphia

Penn State wrestlers sweep 3 matches in Nashville, scoring 137 points while upping win streak to 62
By Jim Carlson | Special to PennLive
Records fell and so did three opponents as the top-ranked Penn State wrestling team easily swept through the Collegiate Duals near Nashville on Sunday with wins over Binghamton, Little Rock and Missouri.
The Nittany Lions shutout Binghamton, 52-0, and Little Rock, 44-0, and took nine of 10 bouts against Missouri in a 41-3 rout featured by a 1 vs. 2 match at 174 that Missouri’s top-ranked Keegan O’Toole captured over Penn State’s Levi Haines by securing a takedown in sudden victory for a 4-1 win.
The two shutouts gave the Nittany Lions (6-0) three straight wins without giving up a point, something that’s not been done before. And, the Sunday trifecta broke the school-record consecutive win streak of 60, increasing that mark to 62 straight victories.
Additionally, the Lions scored 137 total points on Sunday alone and have 246 total points this season as the team’s 10 starters have just two losses among them through six dual meets. The Lions are off until a Jan. 10 home dual against Michigan State.
What people wanted to see on Sunday was the Haines-O’Toole bout and it didn’t disappoint. A 1-1 bout that goes into sudden victory can be boring depending on the pace of the match, but this one was anything but. The hand-fighting and blocking was superb between two outstanding wrestlers, and each had a couple of strong takedown attempts that were either countered or stalemated. … more at … https://www.pennlive.com/penn-state-wrestling/2024/12/penn-state-wrestlers-sweep-3-matches-in-nashville-scoring-137-points-while-upping-win-streak-to-62.html

The Nittany Lions won nine of ten bouts to sweep the three duals at the event. All rankings listed are InterMat/InterMat Tournament Power Index (TPI).
The dual began at 125. Penn State true freshman Luke Lilledahl, ranked No. 12 at 125, opened up Penn State’s final dual of the day with a 5-4 win over Gage Walker. Sophomore Braeden Davis, ranked No. 10 at 133, built up over 4:00 in riding time during a convincing 14-3 major over Missouri’s Kade Moore to give the Nittany Lions and early 7-0 lead. Van Ness turned a first period takedown into a pin at the 1:57 mark, it was Van Ness’ third pin of the day and gave the Lions a 16-0 lead. Junior Levi Haines, ranked No. 2 at 174, took on No. 1 Keegan O’Toole in a much-anticipated match-up. The duo battled through regulation even. A wild scramble in sudden victory ended with an O’Toole takedown, with Haines dropping the thrilling 4-1 (sv) decision.
Graduate Carter Starocci, ranked No. 1 at 184, dominated No. 10 Colton Hawks in another top ten match-up. Starocci used a six-point third period to roll to a 10-1 major with over 2:00 in riding time to put Penn State up 30-3. Redshirt freshman Josh Barr, ranked No. 7 at 197, blitzed Tiger Jesse Cassatt. Keegan O’Toole Defeats Levi Haines In Battle Of NCAA Champions
Keegan O’Toole defeated Levi Haines in an overtime match at the Collegiate Duals.
In a battle of NCAA Champions, Keegan O’Toole came out on top in a 4-1 overtime victory over Levi Haines. O’Toole and Haines met in the dual between Penn State and Missouri at the Collegiate Duals in a match that lived up to the hype.Â
In the first period, both Haines nor O’Toole were limited in their attacks. Haines was closest to scoring and got his hands locked around O’Toole’s leg but didn’t get close to finishing. The two traded escapes in the second and third periods to tie the match at 1. Late in the third, Haines was in deep on a single leg but O’Toole displayed incredible defense to fend off the takedown and send the match to overtime.Â
In the sudden victory frame, Haines came out firing and almost immediately shot a high crotch. O’Toole defended and then hit a reattack single to get his hands locked around Haines’ right leg. Haines came close to getting a takedown of his own with O’Toole bellied out on the mat. However, O’Toole scrambled through the position and secured the match-winning takedown after a wild flurry. During the scramble, Haines briefly had both legs in but the takedown was never awarded and O’Toole was able to work through the position to secure the takedown. Because of that, the Penn State coaches challenged but the call was upheld, giving O’Toole the match by a final score of 4-1. … more at … https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/13323146-keegan-otoole-defeats-levi-haines-in-battle-of-ncaa-champions
WIN Magazine’s Dec. 16 NCAA Division I Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic
By Mike Finn
NEWTON, Iowa — The holidays are upon the college wrestling world and many of the top teams, listed in WIN Magazine’s Dec. 16 national rankings, will be in action one more weekend before Christmas at neutral-site dual meets.
The biggest event will be happening in Nashville, Tenn., where five teams ranked in WIN’s Dual Team Rankings — No. 1 Penn State, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 10 Iowa State, No. 13 Missouri and No. 19 Little Rock — will compete. This could include a featured meeting between the top-two ranked wrestlers and a pair of national champions at 174 pounds: Missouri’s No. 1 Keegan O’Toole and Penn State’s No. 2-ranked Levi Haines.
Meanwhile, there are also scheduled duals between No. 3 Oklahoma State hosting No. 7 Virginia Tech on Dec. 19 and No. 6 NC State traveling to No. 9 Cornell on Dec. 22.
With most schools taking semester exams last weekend, there was little action and few changes in WIN’s Dec. 16 Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic. This includes WIN’s Tournament Power Index, where the top five schools are Penn State (138 TPI points), Oklahoma State (78), Iowa (75), Minnesota (64.5) and Virginia Tech (58.5).
WIN’s TPI projects where programs would finish in the 2025 NCAA Division I Championships, which will be held March 20-22 in Philadelphia, if every wrestler finished the season where they are ranked now. The following is a breakdown of those individual TPI points per ranking: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, … more at … https://www.win-magazine.com/2024/12/16/win-magazines-dec-16-ncaa-division-i-rankings-presented-by-cliff-keen-athletic/

Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by one and a half points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and one point for those ranked 17-20.
Penn State (2-0) remains No. 1 in both the TPI and dual-team rankings and the Nittany Lions also feature someone new to this season’s rankings: freshman Luke Lilledahl, ranked No. 5 at 125 pounds.
Iowa (6-0) remains No. 2 in the dual-team rankings while the Hawkeyes are now rated No. 3 with 75 points, followed by Minnesota (64.5) and Virginia Tech (57.5).
It should be noted that WIN dropped two wrestlers, highly-ranked in previous rankings: Arizona State’s 125-pound defending champ Richard Figueroa, who has not wrestled this season; and Iowa’s Jacori Teemer, last year’s national runner-up at 157, who is out of the Hawkeye lineup for the time being after sustaining a leg injury two weeks ago.
