RALEIGH – Capped off by Isaac Trumble’s dominant technical fall to close the match, sixth-ranked NC State wrestling claimed six of 10 bouts to defeat Utah Valley 23-16 at home Saturday night.

In the first ranked matchup of the night, seventh-ranked Kai Orine faced 21st-ranked and 2022 NCAA Qualifer Haiden Drury in the 141 weight class. The two closed out the first two periods scoreless, although, Drury was able to rack up almost two minutes of riding time from being on top all of the second period. 30 seconds into the third he got the escape to lead 1-0 over Orine. With time slipping away, Orine gave up a takedown to drop his match 0-5 and push Utah Valley’s lead to 9-3.
While the Pack were trailing 3-9 on their home mat, Koy Buesgens in the lineup at 149 pounds was able to provide a spark of energy to his team with a gritty 12-3 major decision. Buesgens did an excellent job capitalizing on his defense and then reattacking which gave him a 6-1 control through the first three minutes. His athleticism continued to show as he displayed a flashy two point reversal in the second and then a slick shot in the third to boost his win.
Eighth-ranked Ed Scott handed NC State the 11-7 lead when he followed up with a major decision of his own in the 157 weight class. Scott remained controlled the scoreboard his entire bout and only let his opponent come within one point to him before he took off to win 19-11.

Manheim, Pennsylvania – One dual meet and one personnel change created the most movement in the most recent NWCA Division I Men’s Wrestling Coaches Poll released on Tuesday.
No. 7 Virginia Tech’s 23-10 win over then-No. 8 Missouri was the lone Top 10 dual of last week. The loss caused Missouri to slip one spot to No. 9 this week. The Hokies (2-0) stayed put.
The return of two-time NCAA champion and Tokyo Olympic champion Gable Steveson to the Minnesota lineup this coming week buoyed the Gophers to No. 10, up two spots. Steveson’s return could be as soon as Sunday when Minnesota (1-0) hosts Campbell. On the mat, the Gophers beat Bucknell 35-3 to open the dual meet portion of the schedule.
Top-ranked Penn State (1-0) opened its dual season with a 41-3 home win against Drexel, giving the Nittany Lions their 56th consecutive dual meet victory. The streak currently stands as the 13th best all-time in college history and among major college divisions, ranks sixth. Penn State’s longest win streak in school history came from 2015-2019 with 60 dual wins in a row.
The David Taylor era at Oklahoma State opened up with a trip out west. The Cowboys (2-0) opened up with a 38-6 win over Utah Valley before taking down No. 24 Oregon State 36-3.
Nebraska (3-0) picked up a pair of wins in North Carolina. The Huskers defeated Campbell 40-6 before heading up the road to Chapel Hill and dispatching No. 25 North Carolina 34-3.  Ohio State (2-0) opened with a pair of home wins. The Buckeyes beat Chattanooga 36-6 and Edinboro 40-4.

In Memory of Coach Jerry Daniels

We pass along this notice for a worthy cause. We remember “Mousey” as a positive man with a great love of wrestling and people. Your support would be appreciated. — TDR Editor & Staff
Friends of Coach Jerry Daniels

You may have heard the sad news of the passing of Coach Jerry Daniels in Raleigh on June 20,2024 at the age of 92. He was well known to thousands of people primarily because of his absolute passion for the sport of wrestling. He coached at two colleges, a couple of high schools and refereed hundreds of high school and college wrestling matches for over 60 years and served as a coach at summer wrestling camps for over 50 years! Imagine how many kids and coaches knew him! Imagine how many fans yelled at him for making a “bad call” as a referee! You know if you talked for any length of time with Coach, you never forgot him.

The purpose of this contact with you is to ask you to consider something special. Anyone who talked to Coach always got an earful of wrestling stories. In all the stories, his absolute love for the sport of wrestling shined through. Another thing that always shined as well was his attitude of serving people and going out of his way to help people…of all stripes. He often worked for free or stepped outside of his world of wrestling to give help or advice to someone. He would often drive for miles or stay up late into the night to help someone.

My quick personal story with Coach began my junior year at NC State when he came to be our assistant wrestling coach, after leaving the head coaching job at Pfieffer College. At the beginning of my senior year, my head coach Al Crawford suddenly died at a wrestling tournament in Atlanta, GA. This led to Coach Daniels becoming head coach of the Wolfpack, a position he held for 7 years. He finished with a 60-36-3 dual meet record. He continued in the sport for many more decades as a camp clinician and referee.

For me personally, my contact with him literally changed the trajectory of my life. I digress a bit to give you the brief story. My senior year, he gave me a copy of the first Athletes in Action magazine. Inside there was a story about AIA starting a new traveling all-star wrestling team to travel the US and around the world with the goal of competing at the highest level and sharing their faith with anyone who would listen. Long story made short, we joined AIA wrestling and never got back to the hopeful engineering career. Wrestling for the USA on two world championship teams and the Pan Am team changed everything for me. Now, I am a Certified Financial Planner. Who knew? My life was forever redirected, humanly speaking, because Coach Daniels handed me a magazine and said, “Hey you might be interested, read this.”. He did that because he cared for me! I am forever grateful that he cared.

You too may have a similar impactful story. We want to honor Coach Daniels with a permanent memento in Reynolds Coliseum, to memorialize his life and influence. Consider joining me and my friends to make this happen as soon as we can, preferably before the current wrestling season ends. I would love to honor Coach and give a token of our appreciation to his family at a dual in January or February. This means we need to fund it before the end of 2024. Our goal is to raise at least $25,000. We already have big start with a couple nice gifts and look forward to seeing what you may consider. Any size gift will be greatly appreciated.

Keep in mind that gifts made to the Wolfpack Club in support of this initiative are tax deductible and will honor Coach Daniels as well as supporting wrestling in our community.  Your gift can be made online by clicking Coach Daniels Wrestling Fund or by check made payable to Wolfpack Club, PO Box 37100, Raleigh, NC 27627. If you have questions don’t hesitate to call me, or you can reach out to Ben Broussard at the Wolfpack Club, Ben.Broussard@Wolfpackclub.com or by phone at 919-605-2321.

Thanks!

Jones: Anthony Robles Movie Will ‘Change How People Look At Wrestling’

Arizona State wrestling coach Zeke Jones thinks the movie ‘Unstoppable’ will be a game-changer for wrestling.
Arizona State coach Zeke Jones answered the phone Tuesday while shuffling papers, returning text messages, planning practices and reviewing movies.
Wait…what?
Wrestlers and wrestling fans worldwide know Anthony Robles as the Arizona State wrestler who was born with one leg and still won a 125-pound NCAA title in 2011. He wrote a book in 2012 titled “From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion.” From that book, the movie “Unstoppable” will be released in theaters and on Amazon Prime in mid-January.
The advanced movie screening will be shown Thursday night in Mesa, Arizona, as part of a red-carpet, fund-raising reception and Jones is nothing short of thrilled. “That movie is going to do more for wrestling than probably any wrestler is going to do for wrestling this year,” Jones said. “We are going to go worldwide, in every country in the world, and share the message of wrestling — that anyone can wrestle, that anyone can do it … that life is a struggle, but wrestling teaches us how to manage the life struggles and how to become all the things we want to be in life.”
Proceeds from the event will benefit ASU’s NIL Collective and the Robles Unstoppable Foundation, which is dedicated to assisting high school student-athletes who need guidance and financial support to pursue higher education. The official movie trailer can be found on YouTube.com … more at … https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/13045803-jones-anthony-robles-movie-will-change-how-people-look-at-wrestling

First year College Women’s programs news

UW-Oshkosh starts its first-ever women’s wrestling program as sport grows across Wisconsin
It’s the fourth college in the state to add the sport along with UW-Stevens Point, Lakeland University and Carthage College
The fastest growing high school sport in the country is spreading in Wisconsin, and colleges in the state are stepping up to meet the demand.
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh started its first-ever women’s wrestling program this fall, becoming the fourth school in the state to add the sport along with UW-Stevens Point, Lakeland University, and Carthage College.
Over 150 high schools in Wisconsin now offer girl’s wrestling. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association has a girls’ division at its boy’s state tournament, and it plans to host a separate state girls’ wrestling team tournament beginning in 2026.
“Before, it was really intimidating for girls,” UW-Oshkosh head coach Jared Costa told WPR’s “Wisconsin Today.” “They had to wrestle boys. They were probably one of two or three (girls) in the program.”
Costa sees the success of girls in wrestling attracting more participants to the sport. That includes one of his team captains, Paige Haaf, a freshman who graduated from Saint Croix Falls High School.
She started wrestling three years ago when her coach, Joe Raygor, started a girls’ program at the high school and youth levels. … more at … https://www.wpr.org/news/uw-oshkosh-womens-wrestling-sport-grows

This Week in Women’s Collegiate Wrestling (11/19/2024)

Top 3 Takeaways and Highlights
1. All-Star Classic Highlights Top-Ranked Wrestlers from NAIA and NCAA
The 2024 All-Star Classic got kicked off with five matchups between top-ranked athletes from NAIA and NCAA schools, and both conferences walked away with big wins. Starting at 110 lbs, #4 (NCAA) Kendra Ryan of North Central won a close decision against #1 (NAIA) Emma Baertlein of Southern Oregon. North Central then snagged another win when #1 (NCAA) Amani Jones pinned her opponent, #2 (NAIA) Maya Davis of Grand View, a 2x All-American.
The 131-pound matchup was my most anticipated as #1 (NCAA) Victoria Baez Dilone of King took on #1 (NAIA) Carolina Moreno of Southern Oregon. Moreno is a 3x NAIA champion and looked tough in this match, but Baez Dilone hit a huge move to laces early and held on to that lead to win 6-2. I would love to see these two compete again because their styles created a few flurries that could have been big points either way.
The evening finished off with back-to-back pins from the McBryde sisters of Life University against their opponents from King. First, #1 (NAIA) Jamilah McBryde got the quick pin of #2 Aine Drury in just 48 seconds. Her sister Latifah who is also #1 (NAIA) got the fall in just under 4 minutes against #1 (NCAA) Cheyenne Bowman. The McBryde sisters continue to show their dominance and gain notoriety for their impressive performances.

2. Grand Valley State University hosts inaugural home dual
#4 Grand Valley State hosted their first dual at Fieldhouse Arena over the weekend against Northern Michigan. The team reported a crowd of over 580 people for the matchup, following a youth clinic they hosted earlier in the day to coincide with the dual. Northern Michigan unfortunately did not present a full lineup, so there were two forfeits in favor of Grand Valley State. Outside of those matches, the Lakers secured wins in seven, only losing at the 207 lbs match. … more at … https://intermatwrestle.com/articles.html/women/this-week-in-womens-collegiate-wrestling-11192024-r99750/
