2011-12 Gardner-Webb Wrestling Season

Boiling Springs, N.C. – In the Gardner-Webb wrestling program’s first year as associate members of the Southern Conference, the Runnin’ Bulldog grapplers posted a 6-12 dual match record and a 2-5 record in conference dual match action for the season.  Battling injuries all season long, the Runnin’ Bulldogs were able to post a sixth-place finish at the 2012 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship in March, scoring a team total of 21 points as three wrestlers placed in fourth-place or higher in their respective weight classes. However, for the first time in the program’s 12-year Division I history, the Runnin’ Bulldogs did not send a wrestler to the NCAA National Championships.  In the program’s first ever postseason conference championship tournament, redshirt-junior Travis Porter, who suffered a fall in the True Second match at 197 pounds at the conference championship tournament, took third-place overall, while fellow teammates Alex Medved (157 pounds) and Justin Guthrie (165 pounds) each placed fourth in their weight classes.

Guardado Finds Success Amid Hectic Schedule

An Interesting and admirable story of a true scholar-athlete at a D-I wrestling program.
DURHAM — Last summer, A.J. Guardado pulled himself out of bed at 6 a.m. each morning to meet several other members of the Duke wrestling team at the Duke University Golf Club. But rather than tee off for 18 holes, Guardado and his teammates put in eight-hour workdays at the golf course before heading off to practice.  The demanding schedule was nothing new for Guardado, who holds down three jobs during the school year. Although fitting in work hours around his academic commitments and training schedule presents all kinds of challenges, it is a necessity for him as a member of a nonscholarship athletic program at a prestigious university.

Anderson Resigns as Duke Wrestling Coach

DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White announced on Wednesday the resignation of Duke wrestling head coach Clar Anderson. Anderson has served as the wrestling head coach since the 1997-98 season.  “It has been a privilege working for Duke University and especially with outstanding student athletes,” Anderson said. “A highlight of my career is when our team garnered the highest GPA in the country for wrestling teams and coaching Konrad Dudziak in the NCAA finals.  But equally important to me was the deep relationships I forged with all of my athletes.  I will miss coaching, but look forward to the next stage of my life and spending more time with my family.”  In his 15 seasons with Duke, Anderson compiled a career record of 101-125-2. He helped guide 14 Blue Devils to the NCAA Championships and mentored two-time All-American heavyweight Konrad Dudziak. He was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 2004 after guiding Duke to a third-place finish at the ACC Championships with four All-ACC selections and four NCAA qualifiers. In 2008, Anderson amassed a career-high win total with a 12-9 overall record.  Rest of the story at http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=22467&SPID=1834&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=4200&ATCLID=205401601
