Stanford Falls to Chattanooga

Cardinal wins three bouts against Mocs
STANFORD, Calif. – After a three-week hiatus for finals, the 15th-ranked Stanford wrestling team dropped a 25-13 dual meet decision to visiting Chattanooga, Friday, at Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal falls to 8-3 on the season, while the Mocs improved to 6-4.  Stanford won just three of the 10 bouts, but scored bonus points in two of them as sophomore Evan Silver posted a major decision and redshirt freshman Josh Marchok registered a fall. Top-ranked redshirt senior Ryan Mango (133 pounds) and 14th-ranked redshirt freshman Jim Wilson (165 pounds) both suffered their first losses of the season.   Silver opened the dual with a 15-3 major decision over Campbell Lewis at 125 pounds to improve to 9-2 on the year. He registered five takedowns, three near fall points, an escape and racked up 3:56 of riding time in the win.   The Mocs recorded wins in the next seven bouts to take a commanding 25-4 lead in the dual. Mango trailed UTC’s Nick Soto 11-3 going into the third period, where he chose to start in the neutral position. He quickly secured a takedown and tacked on three near fall points to cut Soto’s lead to 11-8, but was held off late in the period.   UTC took the dual lead for good at 141 pounds. Stanford true freshman Tommy Pawelski, who was wrestling up two weight classes, fell 9-0 to Mike Pongracz.   In one of the most competitive bouts of the night, Wilson dropped a 4-2 decision to seventh-ranked Corey Mock at 165 pounds. Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Wilson was awarded a point for a stalling call on Mock, who had secured 1:00 of riding time. Wilson went in on a shot late in the period, but was unable to finish it out before time expired.   Senior Dan Scherer stopped the bleeding for the Cardinal at 197 pounds. The St. Louis, Mo., native shut out Scottie Boykin with a 6-0 decision. After neither wrestler scored in the first period, Scherer chose down to start the second where he recorded an escape and then a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Boykin chose to start in the neutral position in the third and Scherer notched another takedown to go with 2:27 of riding time. He improves to 5-1 overall on the season.  Marchok completed the scoring for Stanford with a fall in 3:54, his fastest of the season, over Moc junior heavyweight Kevin Malone. It is the third fall of the season for the rookie who moved to 11-5 overall and 8-3 in duals.  Stanford closes out 2013 at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 22.

Pack’s Gwiazdowski Finishes Second at Southern Scuffle

Pack’s heavyweight falls 1-0 in final to two-time NCAA Champion
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – NC State redshirt sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski brought home a second place finish at 285 pounds at the 2014 Southern Scuffle, one of the top collegiate tournaments annually. In all, four of the five Pack wrestlers that advanced to second day action won at least one bout on Thursday.  Gwiazdowski came in as the No. 2 seed and ranked fifth nationally. His opponent in the championship at 285 pounds was Tony Nelson of Minnesota, currently ranked No. 1 nationally, and the two-time defending NCAA champion. This summer, Gwiazdowski recorded two wins over Nelson at the U.S. World Team Trials.  In the final bout, Gwiazdowski and Nelson wrestled to a scoreless first period. To start the second, Gwiazdowski deferred and Nelson chose bottom. Nelson scored a point for an escape, which turned out to be the final score. In the third period, Gwiazdowski chose neutral, but could not score a takedown to make up the point difference.  Gwiazdowski breezed through two wins yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals last night. In earlier action today, Gwiazdowski beat Jonathan Gingrich of Penn State and then scored a 7-3 decision over No. 12 Jeremy Johnson of Ohio to reach the finals.  Junior Tommy Gantt just missed placing in the top-8, finishing one spot out. Competing in the wrestlebacks at 157 pounds, Gantt posted a 9-2 win over Robert Burg of Navy and followed with a 7-5 decision over Brandon Kingsley of Minnesota. Gantt was eliminated with a 9-2 loss by Luke Smith of Central Michigan.  A pair of Pack freshmen each notched a win today in the wrestlebacks before being eliminated. Pete Renda downed Nick Kee of Appalachian State, 5-3 at 174 pounds, before falling to No. 16 Mike England of Missouri, 4-2. Michael Macciavello earned an 11-6 decision against former NCAA qualifier Ryan Garringer of Ohio at 184, before losing to Craig Kelliher of Central Michigan by fall.  Bill Cook dropped a major decision to No. 18 Zach Nye of Virginia in the wrestlebacks at 197 pounds.  The Pack will compete in the first ACC dual of the season when it travels to No. 12 Pittsburgh on Jan. 11.
