WATERLOO — The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum is getting a $1.4 million renovation. The museum’s been a staple of Waterloo since it moved here from Newton in 2007. This is the museum’s first renovation since coming to the Cedar Valley. “We are viewing our future through the lens of diversity,” said Kyle Klingman, museum director. “I think that’s an important part of what we do here. We can no longer be just a museum. We need to be more than a museum.”

Over the years the museum has expanded in what it does, acting as a learning and training center. “We have things we can offer beyond just a museum,” Klingman said. “We had to evolve with the times.” The renovations will expand the museum’s wrestling room and add new technology. The wrestling room will be a multi-use space and is the size of two and half wrestling mats, Klingman said. “It’s a pretty good-sized wrestling room.” Rest of the story at https://wcfcourier.com/news/local/wrestling-museum-becoming-more-than-a-museum/article_a0bfe1d7-c496-5f62-9b88-b01898cd17c3.html?fbclid=IwAR0fbnLXqEqlsHrVOxbXSLx1P2yuU1PbVbmVe7EbykZJoMXRJ4uhWammJjs

Penn Wrestling Bedeviled By Duke, 25-18

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team was done in by a furious Duke comeback as the Blue Devils won four matches in a row out of intermission to turn a 15-7 Penn lead into an eventual 25-18 defeat in Card Gym. Penn had staked itself to an 11-0 lead after just two bouts on the strength of a dominant tech fall from Carmen Ferrante at 125 and a forfeit by Duke at 133. Ferrante had built a 14-0 first period lead based off a takedown and three sets of four-point nearfall before earning the tech.

Duke began to creep back into the dual meet with back-to-back wins from Josh Finesilver and No. 6 Mitch Finesilver. At 141, Penn’s Grant Aronoff scored the first takedown, but Josh Finesilver rallied with a takedown and two nearfall before adding a late reversal following injury time by Aronoff. In the second period, Aronoff again scored the first takedown, but a reversal and two backpoints built an 11-4 lead. In the third, the two wrestler exchanged reversals but a late stall call on Aronoff as he tried to hold Finesilver down was the deciding point in the major.

So I Went To My First Penn State Wrestling Dual Meet, Or Is It Match?

TDR Editor’s Notes ; Interesting article and a fun read. Would like to attend a match or meet at State College sometime. E-mail your vote or view in that is it a Match or a Meet?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It’s something I had never thought about until I was waiting in line outside Rec Hall on Friday night. How come there aren’t more kids in Beaver Stadium? In reality I know the answer to that. Tickets are too expensive to take an eight-year-old so he/she can get lost in the crowd when you were waiting RIGHT HERE outside the bathroom 10 minutes before kickoff. But they’re all over the place at Rec Hall. Sons holding their dad’s hand as they eagerly find their seats. There was a little girl enthusiastically cheering on Penn State wrestlers by name. It felt like a family affair, young and old, rich and not so rich. All there to watch some of the most talented wrestlers on the planet.

It’s ironic in a world that puts such an emphasis on having the best facilities possible that Rec Hall exists largely unchanged while housing maybe the most successful wrestling program ever. One of the main apparel shops may as well have been a broom closet cut into the wall. There are no flashy lights, no over-saturation of brands. It’s pretty much just wrestling and if you want a shirt well Sharon has them over there. That’s fitting in a way though, wrestling is one of the oldest sports humans have played, and like soccer it requires next to no equipment to actually do. There is something primal and very natural about nothing more than a test of physical strength. It’s a reminder that we are not in fact all that different from the rest of the animals roaming the Earth.

I’m burying the lede here a little bit. Until Friday night I had never been to a Penn State wrestling dual. I’ve watched plenty on TV, it’s hard to cover Penn State athletics and just not pay attention to the most successful team in town, but I had never made my way into Rec Hall to see it in person. So, since I had the time and the urge, I fired up StubHub and got myself a ticket. The other thing here is that I don’t know that much about wrestling. I understand the scoring -sort of- and I’ve watched enough MMA in my life to grasp the basics of a ground game. I know what riding time is and I sort of understand takedowns.
