Top 10 College Wrestling Performances of the Week – Jan. 14th, 2019

Earlier last week we talked a how many big matches were on the horizon for the weekend and overall they did not disappoint. While Daton Fix (Oklahoma State) vs. Nick Suriano (Rutgers) was a dud, there will still plenty of great matches and incredible performances. Here are the ten top performances of the week in college wrestling.

10) Luke Weber (North Dakota State)

Even though the Bison fell to undefeated Pittsburgh 22-11, they did have a bright spot at the 157 lb weight class. Luke Weber, a Nebraska transfer, made his home debut for North Dakota State and shocked 10th ranked Taleb Rahmani 10-4. Luke jumped out to a 6-1 lead on Rahmani and never looked back. This was only Weber’s second dual appearance of the year for NDSU; he dropped his first match to North Carolina at the South Beach Duals. He will be a name to watch going forward for North Dakota State.

9) Cortlandt Schuyler (Lehigh)

For the most part, the 2018-19 season has not been kind to Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks entered the year with high expectations and a projected lineup that looked imposing in duals, as well as in tournaments. The injury bug hit hard and that ideal lineup had never materialized for head coach Pat Santoro. One of those wrestlers that missed some time early in the season was 149 lber Cortlandt Schuyler. Saturday EIWA-rival Cornell traveled to Bethlehem undefeated, ranked 11th in the country and ready for a third straight win over their hosts. The dual was all tied at 16 headed into the final bout of the night where Schuyler would meet Jonathan Furnas. Seven minutes were not enough and the match went to sudden victory where Schuyler registered the winning takedown. Not only did Cortlandt get his hand raised, but Lehigh took the dual meet, downing the Big Red for the first time at home since 2011.

8) Mike Carr (Illinois)

Since he did not compete at all in December and only came into last weekend with six matches under his belt, it may be easy to forget about eighth-ranked Mike Carr. Wrestling Weekend That Was: Cornell names tournament after late coach Mike Duroe

Cornell honored late coach Mike Duroe by placing his name on its home tournament and Ben Hewson made sure the Rams could celebrate some gold. Wrestling had marquee matches, controversial finishes and standout performances in the Wrestling Weekend That Was:

Honoring Mike Duroe

Cornell College hosted its annual invitational wrestling tournament last weekend. The event has been a staple on the college wrestling schedule. This season, the Matman has been renamed the Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invitational, honoring former Rams Coach Mike Duroe, who died in July at age 63 after a battle with brain cancer. Duroe was a great ambassador for wrestling, competing and coaching at the high school, college and international levels. He became Cornell’s all-time dual wins leader in 13 seasons as head coach. He coached 47 NCAA qualifiers, 22 All-Americans and five NCAA finalists at Cornell, including 2014 NCAA Division III 197-pound national champion Alex Coolidge.

The day was special for the Rams and those associated with the Charles City native. “You could tell the guys were inspired and motivated,” said first-year head coach Brent Hamm, who wrestled four years and assisted three years for the Hall of Famer. “This day was extremely important to our program and it hit home for me personally. I am proud of the guys and how they bounced back from a tough weekend a week ago. We’ll use this as momentum going down the final stretch.” Rest of the story and details at https://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/wrestling-weekend-that-was-cornell-names-tournament-after-late-coach-mike-duroe-20190114?mc_cid=739d39d282&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

An emerging opportunity: Girls wrestling takes off for Chicago-area schools

When Maine East junior Kate Cacho entered high school and began wrestling, chances to compete against other girls were so rare that they were cause for celebration. “We had a few girls on our team, and we’d pretty much only wrestle boys,” Cacho said. “Whenever we saw another girl, we’d get so excited and hope they were at the right weight for one of us to get to wrestle them. We were always hoping for those chances to wrestle other girls.” Cacho and her female teammates are getting more and more opportunities to do that as interest in girls wrestling is increasing rapidly in Illinois and across the country. Cacho won the 96-pound state championship at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association’s girls state tournament last season. It was the second girls state tournament held by the IWCOA, with the third set for March.

The IHSA has declared girls wrestling an emerging sport, opening up the possibility for a sanctioned girls wrestling state series in the future. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, 13 states currently sponsor a girls state tournament. Meanwhile, 48 colleges have women’s wrestling teams. In Illinois, there are 621 high school girls competing in the sport, compared to 446 last season, according to Homewood-Flossmoor coach Shannyn Gillespie, head of the Illinois Girls Wrestling Coaches Alliance.
