Eight years later, Anthony Robles is still inspiring others
By Nick Corey
It’s been eight years since Anthony Robles left wrestling fans with goosebumps and throat lumps by bounding down the Wells Fargo Arena red carpet on crutches and coming off the stage minutes later as a national champion. The kid born without a right leg became a young man representing the best the NCAA Championships — and the undaunted human spirit — have to offer. “I’m so proud of Anthony — still,” his mother, Judy Robles, said recently. “He’s inspired so many. It’s Anthony who really motivated me (with) all he’s accomplished. I was so proud, and I applied it to my life.”
Since her son’s title-winning performance in Philadelphia, Judy has earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Arizona State University and is in the process of pursuing a doctorate. “After I told him how proud I was, he told me it was my turn,” Judy said. “I’d always stressed education. All my kids have degrees or are in college now. Anthony inspired me on my own (journey).” Anthony Robles spent a few days in Pittsburgh last month, providing commentary for ESPN throughout the NCAA Championships. His broadcasting career has enabled him to reach the masses with his wrestling expertise. He’s also a sought-after motivational speaker who delivers messages of hope and inspiration to crowds at schools, churches and Fortune 500 companies. Robles delivers roughly 50 speeches per year and has told his story in all 50 states. Behind a committed Moore, LHU wrestling’s future is bright
From Day 1, Scott Moore had a vision, one that continues to motivate the Bald Eagles head wrestling coach.
MAT-TOWN, U.S.A. – “Listen, no matter what happens, I want to be at Lock Haven.” Those were the words spoken by Scott Moore as he wrapped up a day of interviewing for the vacant head coaching position at Lock Haven University in the summer of 2013. Moore, the interim head coach at the time, was talking about why he moved back to central Pennsylvania, and why he wanted to be the next head wrestling coach in Mat-Town U.S.A. He had a vision. At the time, it was a vision only he could dream of and only he could construct.
Days later, on July 1, 2013, Moore was named the Bald Eagles head coach, and he committed to lead the team. He committed to build on that vision from day one. Today, six seasons later, he is just as committed to the vision and to the future of LHU wrestling. With five All-Americans, 25 NCAA Division I national qualifiers, two Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Championships and back-to-back top-20 NCAA finishes, Moore is still building on that vision. Call it “The Rise” if you will, but Moore has never been more excited about what lies ahead. Moore has embraced every aspect of coaching at The Haven, and without question, that regard for what LHU is and what it stands for has strengthened his background, coaching ability and helped cement Lock Haven’s rise back to the national stage. Moore embraced the local community and, in return, it embraced Moore. The community – filled with knowledgeable wrestling-crazed supporters – stood behind and supported what Moore was building.
