New Jersey City University to add men’s, women’s wrestling

TDR Editor’s Notes ; This is great news! Wonderful to see more collegiate wrestling opportunities. This increase in college teams will hopefully encourage an increase in high school teams and participation numbers. Many positive events in New Jersey wrestling.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
JERSEY CITY, N.J. — In a historic expansion of its athletic offerings New Jersey City University will add men’s and women’s wrestling as the latest sports in its lineup of intercollegiate athletic programs, Shawn Tucker, Director of Athletics and Associate Vice President, has announced. NJCU will become the first university in the state of New Jersey to sponsor an NCAA women’s wrestling program. Each program will have its own full-time head coach. An extensive national search to fill each head coaching position will be conducted during the months of May and June. The men’s and women’s wrestling programs will be club programs during the introductory 2019-20 academic year before being elevated to full varsity status in Fall 2020. Potential future conference affiliations will be determined during the 2019-20 year. Both programs will practice and compete at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on campus.

More Great Wrestling News from New Jersey

“The addition of men’s and women’s wrestling to our intercollegiate athletics program is a significant moment in the history of our athletics department,” said NJCU President Dr. Sue Henderson, the current chair of the NCAA Division III President’s Council and Vice-Chair of the NCAA Board of Governors. “While assessing areas for potential growth within our athletics program over the last 12 months it became clear to our leadership that there were enormous opportunities within this popular sport. Men’s wrestling is currently well established, both in New Jersey’s high schools and within the NCAA championship structure. Meanwhile, wrestling is one of the fastest growing women’s sports in the United States and the world. With the introduction of the sport at our institution, we will be positioned well to capitalize on the movement and be at the forefront as leaders in another women’s sport, giving new opportunities to female student-athletes.” Rest of the story and details at

McFarland Inducted into Michigan Chapter of National Wrestling Hall of Fame

By Leah Howard ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Former University of Michigan head wrestling coach Joe McFarland was inducted into the Michigan chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame yesterday (Sunday, April 28) during a banquet and ceremony held at Weber’s Inn. McFarland, who retired last spring after 19 seasons at the helm of the Wolverine program, was inducted for his lifetime service to the sport of wrestling. Under his leadership, Michigan captured three Big Ten dual-meet championships (2004, ’05, ’06) and earned 11 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships (2001-08, ’16-18), including an NCAA runner-up performance in 2005 and a fourth-place finish in 2018.

He ranks third on Michigan’s head coaching career wins list (214) behind legendary head coach Cliff Keen (274, 1926-42, ’46-70) and his own collegiate coach, Dale Bahr (221, 1979-99). McFarland led 31 different student-athletes to five NCAA individual titles, 60 All-America citations and 19 Big Ten individual crowns. A four-time NCAA All-American (1981-82, ’84-85) during his own competitive career at Michigan, McFarland compiled a 166-24-4 career record, which still ranks him third in program history for victories, while his 48 wins during the 1983-84 season are the most recorded by a Michigan wrestler in a single season. He was a two-time NCAA finalist at 126 pounds (1984, ’85) and won the Big Ten crown in 1984. Internationally, McFarland was a silver medalist at the 1986 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Proposal would let wrestlers compete in shorts

Committee also calls for unsuccessful video challenge to result in a stall warning

April 29, 2019 By Greg Johnson
The NCAA Wrestling Rules Committee recommended allowing wrestlers to compete in shorts designed for the sport and removing all language in the rules book regarding the length of a wrestler’s hair. If approved, the changes would take effect in the 2019-20 academic year. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel is scheduled to discuss all wrestling rules proposals via teleconference June 13. Committee members, who met in Indianapolis earlier this month, wanted to make the rules for hair less rigid and provide an additional option for the competition uniform.

“We’re opening up to be more progressive in the sport,” said Matt Valenti, committee chair and the associate athletics director of student development at Pennsylvania. “This should give everyone more freedom of expression, and hopefully, make the sport more inclusive. We have our eye on the future with the thought that this could help the sport grow.” Rest of the story and proposals at https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/proposal-would-let-wrestlers-compete-shorts?mc_cid=885885512f&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
