HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week – December 10th, 2019

The Open Mat’s High School Wrestler of the Week Award goes to Timmy Ward of Canton Area High School in Canton, Pennsylvania. Over the weekend, Ward went 4-0 with a fall in the opening round to win the Bloomsburg High School Darren Klingerman Invitational at 170 pounds. While Ward didn’t picked up any ranked wins, his feat is impressive for another reason. This was Ward’s first tournament back on the mat since being diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma a year ago. Ward, a state qualifier in 2018,as a sophomore, went into remission in the spring and this is his first season back on the mat. Ironman, Beast of the East wrestling: Winning isn’t everything … or the only thing
Nazareth’s Tyler Tarsi and Ray Ward finished among the top four in their respective weight classes in previous years at the prestigious Beast of the East tournament, then did not medal later that season at the PIAA Wrestling Championships in Hershey. “I’ve seen too many guys for us doing well at the Beast and it sometimes being a bad luck charm,” coach Dave Crowell said. Bethlehem Catholic’s Matt Lackman has medals from the Beast of the East and the Walsh Jesuit Ironman, which is Friday and Saturday in Ohio, but he has yet to wrestle in the state tournament because of injuries. Area coaches who are taking teams to two of the nation’s most prestigious tournaments this month are looking to walk away with lessons, more than medals. “Yeah, if a kid gets beat around,” Crowell added, “he is always easier to coach. For some good kids from other states, it’s how they get recruited. For us [in Pennsylvania], you want to place high in the state tournament. “Most kids can’t have everything. The pretty freaky ones do great all year long and do great at the end.” This weekend, Bethlehem Catholic, Easton and Notre Dame-GP are sending contingents to the Ironman.Lineups for area teams, top seeds for this weekend’s Walsh Jesuit Ironman »
Next weekend, Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth, Northampton, Whitehall, Notre Dame-GP and Saucon Valley are going to the University of Delaware for the Beast. Golden Hawks coach Jeff Karam is looking for those lessons this weekend for his 11 entries.
