Despite regional losses, Fike, CBA programs hit new heights

By Jack Frederick jfrederick@wilsontimes.com | 265-7824 | Twitter: @_jackfrederick
CHAPEL HILL — Even after being ousted from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team wrestling playoffs Friday, Fike High wrestlers and coaches exercised perspective about just what the program had accomplished by reaching the East Region finals. Falling one win and a couple bouts short of vying for a state championship in Greensboro — which would have been a first for the program — did not detract from the fact that no Demons, in recent memory or maybe ever, have made it as far as the team did in the dual-team playoffs. “I’m very content with what we’ve done this year all around,” Fike senior Aaron Bancroft said. “We have a very young team and for what we do, we produce like we’re three or four years in. I couldn’t ask for a better team. All four years I’ve been here, I could not ask for that. They’re my brothers and they’ve been there for me.” The Demons, backloading with strong wrestlers in the higher weights, completed a 43-33 comeback victory to send C.B. Aycock home by dramatic fashion. Bancroft led that charge with a crucial pin to advance to the East Region finals. But the team wasn’t as lucky later in the night against Northern Guilford and couldn’t come up with the points needed, falling 39-24. “The second match, we knew it was a 50-50 chance,” Fike head coach Brad Watson said. “The stars had to align and everything had to be perfect.” Everything did not line up for victory, and the team lost to the eventual 3-A state champion. By Saturday afternoon, the Nighthawks had downed Enka 42-31 to become the last team standing, less than 24 hours after Fike took them down the wire. Competing to that level is not something Fike has routinely done in recent years. And the loss shapes up to only motivate the team going forward. …. rest of the story at http://wilsontimes.com/stories/despite-regional-losses-fike-cba-programs-hit-new-heights,201302?newsletter=201304

How Wrestling Built Me: World champion Stephen Neal
Who is the greatest two-sport athlete of all time? Stephen Neal’s name should be near the top of the list. Neal placed fourth in the 189-pound bracket at the 1994 California State Wrestling Championships. He attended California State-Bakersfield and placed fourth at the NCAA championships as a freshman in 1996, second in 1997, followed by NCAA titles at heavyweight in 1998 and 1999. His finals match against Minnesota’s Brock Lesnar is among the most talked-about and historic matches in college wrestling history. Several months after winning his second NCAA championship, Neal won a freestyle World title and was named outstanding wrestler in the world. He placed second at the 2000 Olympic Trials and retired from active wrestling competition in 2001 after placing second at the World Team Trials.  What happened next defies logic. Although he didn’t play a down of college football, Neal played 10 years in the NFL (2001-10) as an offensive lineman for the New England Patriots where he won three Super Bowl rings under legendary coach Bill Belichick.  How did Neal make it to the NFL without any college football experience? One reason. Stephen Neal was a wrestler. … . rest of story and podcast at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPlayer.jsp?TIM=1580272686773&twSessionId=vtkjpckdzl&videoId=277020135&mc_cid=da11b81f16&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Any body type can be a champion in wrestling
How many times have you seen the following scenario take place on a wrestling mat?
A physically-superior athlete comes out fast and takes down a seemingly-inferior competitor off the whistle. It was almost comical how easy the takedown was because the dominant wrestler scored with such efficiency that the match appeared to be an inevitable blowout.
The sheer domination may go on for a while. It might be a few more takedowns or it might be a takedown and back points. Regardless, it is apparent that there is a glaring difference in athletic ability.
Then something happens.
The seemingly-inferior wrestler mounts a comeback. The once-dominant wrestler starts to tire and loses his apparent edge. This may result in a glorious come-from-behind win or it may result in the superior wrestler getting ridden the entire third period.
But the dominant athlete still wins. Win or lose, the less-gifted athlete stood his or her ground and fought the entire match.
This is ultimately why wrestling is different — and better — than other sports. Consider the odd pairings of a sprinter racing the marathoner, the gymnast staring down the power-lifter or a swimmer squaring off against the football player. These body types and styles can face off on a wrestling mat.
A winner will inevitably be determined as long as both competitors are at or below a predetermined weight and the playing field is level for all. … . rst of story at https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?TIM=1580272686773&twSessionId=vtkjpckdzl&postId=277697135&mc_cid=da11b81f16&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Leistikow: Thanks to grassroots support, Iowa nears approval for $20M wrestling facility
IOWA CITY, Ia. — Big things are on the way for the Iowa wrestling program. Yes, bigger even than this Friday’s sold-out, No. 1-vs.-No. 2 dual between Iowa and Penn State. If approved by the Board of Regents during their Feb. 5 meeting in Urbandale, planning will begin to construct a standalone, wrestling-only operations center on the South side of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. And, given the groundswell of financial support that has quietly developed in the past two years, passage of the agenda item — released publicly Tuesday morning — should be a formality. …. rest of story and video at https://www.press-citizen.com/story/sports/college/columnists/chad-leistikow/2020/01/28/iowa-wrestling-nears-approval-board-of-regents-standalone-facility/4590136002/?mc_cid=da11b81f16&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Women’s Wrestling – # 14

Richards wrestler Mia Palumbo has an eye for the final of the state, future Olympic Games
It has been a quiet few years for Richards’ Mia Palumbo, but that is going to change. In 2018, Palumbo broke into the preparatory wrestling scene during a historic freshman season. Before that year, only two girls had qualified for the state wrestling tournament, which began in 1937. Palumbo and Quiovany Santos of Dunbar both qualified in 2018 and Palumbo became the first girl to win a competition in the state. In fact, she won two – one of them apparently after she had shed two tears in the labrum of one of her hips in a quarter-final loss. That injury did not stop Palumbo from struggling – or winning. She won two girls’ national titles that summer before finally having the injury diagnosed and repaired. “I just had to struggle with it,” said Palumbo. “” I struggled with it all summer. And I was operated on when I returned from [nationals in] Fargo [North Dakota]. “ That speaks to Palumbo’s tolerance for pain and her determination. University of the Ozarks Adds Women’s Wrestling
Courtesy of Ozarks Athletics – Link

Clarksville, Ark. – University of the Ozarks will launch a women’s wrestling program beginning the 2020-21 academic year, Eagles Athletic Director Jimmy Clark announced today. The program will be a club sport for the 2020-21 year and will move to an NCAA Division III varsity intercollegiate program starting in the fall of 2021, according to Clark. The new team will expand Ozarks’ varsity sports offerings to 21 intercollegiate programs. The University has offered men’s wrestling since 2014. The current men’s wrestling head coach, LeRoy Gardner, will also lead the women’s program. The University plans to hire an additional assistant coach to assist with the new program. “Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in this country in both college and high school and we’re excited about offering this opportunity for women who want to compete on the collegiate level,” Clark said. “We’ve been considering adding it for a couple of years and with our men’s wrestling program thriving, we felt it was the right time to add it. We’ve got the facilities and infrastructure in place, so it just seemed like a natural fit.” In 2019, the Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) sanction women’s high school wrestling in Arkansas, becoming the 18th state to have the sport at the high school level.  Nationally there were 2,980 high school sponsoring teams and 21,124 girls wrestling at the high school level in 2018-19, according to a survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations. That’s up 5,000 from the previous year. …. rest of the story at https://portal.nwcaonline.com/articles/NWCA_News/University-of-the-Ozarks-Adds-Women-s-10-2-2020

She’s the first girls wrestling coach in Idaho. But she won’t be the last.
Amber Quintana patrols along the edge of the mat in the Columbia High wrestling room before spotting someone struggling with a drill. She drops down to all fours, fires out her legs and demonstrates how to spin out of an opponent’s grasp. The rookie wrestlers nod in agreement, and Quintana pops back up and offers one bit of parting advice.
“A good wrestler is going to follow you,” she says.
She ought to know.
The 23-year-old Quintana joined the Columbia wrestling staff this season with a mile-long list of accomplishments on the mat, including multiple national titles. Now she’s taking her place as a pioneer in Idaho — the first high school girls wrestling coach in state history. “I hope that other schools can find a way to get another coach for the girls, whether that’s a female (or not),” Quintana said. “These girls have the right to have another coach. “They don’t need to be chasing a coach down in another gym, because that’s what usually happens at a tournament. The girls are in one gym, the boys are in the other and now you’ve got these girls running back and forth for their coach.” …. rest of the story at https://www.idahostatesman.com/sports/high-school/article239582558.html?mc_cid=376d1632c5&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
