Despite regional losses, Fike, CBA programs hit new heights

CHAPEL HILL — Even after being ousted from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team wrestling playoffs Friday, Fike High wrestlers and coaches exercised perspective about just what the program had accomplished by reaching the East Region finals. Falling one win and a couple bouts short of vying for a state championship in Greensboro — which would have been a first for the program — did not detract from the fact that no Demons, in recent memory or maybe ever, have made it as far as the team did in the dual-team playoffs. “I’m very content with what we’ve done this year all around,” Fike senior Aaron Bancroft said. “We have a very young team and for what we do, we produce like we’re three or four years in. I couldn’t ask for a better team. All four years I’ve been here, I could not ask for that. They’re my brothers and they’ve been there for me.” The Demons, backloading with strong wrestlers in the higher weights, completed a 43-33 comeback victory to send C.B. Aycock home by dramatic fashion. Bancroft led that charge with a crucial pin to advance to the East Region finals. But the team wasn’t as lucky later in the night against Northern Guilford and couldn’t come up with the points needed, falling 39-24. “The second match, we knew it was a 50-50 chance,” Fike head coach Brad Watson said. “The stars had to align and everything had to be perfect.” Everything did not line up for victory, and the team lost to the eventual 3-A state champion. By Saturday afternoon, the Nighthawks had downed Enka 42-31 to become the last team standing, less than 24 hours after Fike took them down the wire. Competing to that level is not something Fike has routinely done in recent years. And the loss shapes up to only motivate the team going forward. …. rest of the story at http://wilsontimes.com/stories/despite-regional-losses-fike-cba-programs-hit-new-heights,201302?newsletter=201304
