1 } – Dream delayed: Tony Nelson continues to prepare for Olympic challenge
This was supposed to be Tony Nelson’s final year as a competitive international wrestler. And his plan for 2020 was simple: Earn a trip to Toyko as a member of the United States Olympic wrestling team, then retire in a blaze of glory on the Olympic stage. “My original goal was to be done after this year,” Nelson said. “I have three kids, so that adds a factor to training. I had even given my wife a timeline. And then this happened.” “This” is the COVID-19 pandemic that has put everyone’s life in stasis. For Nelson, his dreams have been deferred to 2021 as the Olympic Trials, the qualifying events for the U.S. Olympic team that were scheduled for early April, were postponed, as were the Tokyo Olympics. Nelson, a 2009 graduate of Cambridge-Isanti High School, won two state titles in high school as well as two NCAA titles at the University of Minnesota. Nelson had a 141-18 record with the Bluejackets and was 131-16 with the Golden Gophers. Nelson admitted it was not hard to see postponements were coming. … rest of story at https://www.hometownsource.com/county_news_review/free/dream-delayed-tony-nelson-continues-to-prepare-for-olympic-challenge/article_4ecd5492-953a-11ea-8480-0bed24a90c5a.html?mc_cid=588b1d30ac&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

2 } – Igali Expresses ‘Bigger Fear’ For Wrestling Post – Covid-19
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Hon. Daniel Igali is worried athletes would experience stringent scrutiny and difficulty in procuring travelling documents when competition returns after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Virtually all sporting events globally have been grounded as a result of the ravaging pandemic since March, with wrestling likely to stage a comeback later this year. However, with no cure or vaccine for Covid-19 in sight, the World and Olympic champion, who was in 2014 denied entry to Uzbekistan for the Bureau election of the United World Wrestling (UWW, then FILA), due to the outbreak of Ebola in Lagos and some parts of West Africa, fears that a similar scenario will play out when competition resumes, adding that the country could miss tournaments as a result. “My biggest fear is not even with the actual wrestling,” … rest of story at https://www.sports247.ng/igali-expresses-bigger-fear-for-wrestling-post-covid-19/?mc_cid=0b36b62cc1&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

3 } – Denmark Is Back; SWE Saga Continues; Rumble On The Rooftop
The Danish Wrestling Federation recently announced that indoor wrestling training has finally resumed. Earlier this spring, Denmark was one of the first European nations (and the first from Scandinavia) to sign off on organized outdoor activities. That apparently went well, as less than two months later, Danish athletes are now able to participate in actual practices. Of course, there are guidelines involved. Similar to the measures being taken elsewhere for other re-opened programs, capacity in training centers is limited and wrestlers are not permitted with those outside of their groups. The Danish federation has availed five key focus points which can be viewed below. … rest of story at http://www.fivepointmove.com/greco-wrestling-news/denmark-sweden-update-rau-comments/?mc_cid=76bedc2d68&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

On a sports podcast this week, a former athlete who once ranked as the No. 5 Greco-Roman wrestler in the U.S. said his sport could help teach cops about better methods of combat while on duty. “If athletics can have a role in this way and helping our country heal, it should come from athletes who understand not only how combat works — physical hand-to-hand combat — but also what it feels like to be on the other side,” said Akil Patterson, who is also a former collegiate football player and currently is a community advocate in Baltimore. “To feel fear, to have a representation that is a different mindset.” … rest of story at https://www.foxnews.com/sports/former-top-wrestler-teach-law-enforcement-about-combat?mc_cid=54d8473a59&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
