5 } – Palmetto Ridge wrestlers remember Colby Singletary during school’s signing ceremony
Last July, the Palmetto Ridge High School wresting team lost its leader. State champion Colby Singletary died in a single-car accident, devastating the team, the school, Collier County, and the entire wrestling community. “We sat down and said, we’re a family and we’re here for each other,” coach Blaine Ison said. “‘OK, what are we going to do? We can look around and say ‘pity us, we just lost our best wrestler, or are we going to make a statement this year?’
“I believe we made a pretty good statement this year.” The Bears won their 16th straight Collier County Athletic Conference title, seventh straight district crown, and sent six wrestlers to the Class 2A state tournament. Trillyon Fils-Aime, who vowed to win a state title to honor his friend Singletary, did just that, going 58-4 at 220 pounds. Fils-Aime, a finalist for Daily News Wrestler of the Year, and teammate A.J. Ayala signed with Southeastern University, and Cullen Guerrero did so with Keiser University. … rest of story at https://www.naplesnews.com/story/sports/high-school/2020/06/11/palmetto-ridge-holds-signing-ceremony-nine-student-athletes/5341301002/?mc_cid=9214b6001a&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

Vinnie Renault was undefeated in his junior and senior seasons on the wrestling mat.
PLYMOUTH – There’s no more of an individual sport than wrestling but this week’s 50-for-50 profile Vinnie Renault will tell you there’s no way you can succeed in the sport without some help from your friends. A two-time New England wrestling champion and a high school national finalist as a senior, the Class of 2007 Plymouth South graduate set records with the Panther wrestling program that may never be shattered. But he’s quick to point out that he didn’t do it alone. “I was incredibly lucky. I got so much help along the way and those people deserve a lot of the credit for what I was able to do,” said Renault, now 31. “From my step-father, John O’Connor, taking me to my first wrestling match when I was in middle school to my father (Jeff Renault) driving me into Boston a couple days each week to train with college kids at Harvard University to my mom, Caroline O’Connor, who took over as my dietician and was always my biggest fan. “Then you have my high school coaches (Mark Loranger and Sean Petrosino) as well as all my Plymouth South teammates and my opponents who pushed me to train a little harder each day and helped me be the best possible wrestler that I could be. … rest of story at https://www.metrowestdailynews.com/sports/20200613/plymouth-50-for-50-in-program-filled-with-stars-plymouth-south-wrestler-vinnie-renault-shined-brightest?mc_cid=f75b9fce50&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

8 } – Are there ways to deal with wrestling forfeits without cutting weight classes?
By Brad Wilson | For lehighvalleylive.com
We addressed the issue here of how area wrestling coaches feel about the PIAA’s proposed weight class reduction from 14 to 13 weights, which will receive a second reading at the Board of Directors vote today. Now, we take a look at some of the coaches’ ideas to reduce forfeits without cutting a weight class.
Dave Crowell is a man with a plan.
Actually, make that plural — plans.
Specifically, the Nazareth head wrestling coach has ideas to cut down on forfeits and boost participation in the sport (the latter would go a long way towards helping with the former) that do not involve dropping a weight class. (The proposal in front of the PIAA keeps the current classes through 160 pounds, then 172, 189, 215 and 285.) “(Dropping a weight class) will result in lost opportunities for kids to compete, which will ultimately result in student-athletes being more likely to choose not to participate at all,” … rest of story at https://www.lehighvalleylive.com/highschoolsports/2020/06/are-there-ways-to-deal-with-wrestling-forfeits-without-cutting-weight-classes.html?mc_cid=76bedc2d68&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b

The PIAA is one voting session away from reducing high school wrestling from 14 weight classes to 13 in time for the 2020-21 season. Weight classes 170, 182, 195 and 220 would be condensed to 172, 189 and 215. The board listened to a 30-minute presentation by a group opposed to the proposal. Attorney Richard Sandow said his group has collected over 11,000 signatures opposed to the change. … rest of story at https://www.timesleader.com/sports/788181/piaa-moves-closer-to-cutting-wrestling-weight-classes-from-14-to-13?mc_cid=5a3eb39922&mc_eid=2ef7cbca4b
